Farmers Markets And Single-Use Plastic: Why Environmentally Conscious Consumers Don’T Bring Reusable Bags, Scott Hardy, Jill Bartolotta
Farmers Markets And Single-Use Plastic: Why Environmentally Conscious Consumers Don’T Bring Reusable Bags, Scott Hardy, Jill Bartolotta
Journal of Extension
This study looks at the role of Extension in helping local officials reduce plastic bag use at farmers markets in three Lake County, OH communities. We distributed free reusable bags to shoppers and conducted an education and outreach program. We then took observations to determine if the free reusable bags were being used. We also invited shoppers to take a voluntary survey about their environmental attitudes, why or why not they use the reusable bags, and how best to reduce plastic bag use moving forward. Results from the study suggest that supplying free reusable bags at farmer markets is not …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Background: While literature on the overall health burden of high temperature exposures on children continues to grow, little is known about whether children with chronic diseases are particularly vulnerable to the adverse health impacts of extreme heat.
Methods: We used New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) data on children aged 0-18 years admitted to emergency department and hospitals during the warm months (May-September) from 2005 to 2011. We identified children with specific chronic diseases or conditions that plausibly enhance susceptibility to heat (i.e., asthma, obesity, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, sickle cell trait, and mental …

Enhancing Civic Engagement Through Leadership Education, Lori E. Kniffin, Sonalini Sapra
Enhancing Civic Engagement Through Leadership Education, Lori E. Kniffin, Sonalini Sapra
eJournal of Public Affairs
Many civic engagement courses require students to work with community members to make progress on complex problems, which in itself can be a practice of leadership. Yet there is little evidence that leadership development is strategically incorporated in civic engagement courses. Therefore, we taught eight leadership sessions over two semesters in the Principled Problem Solving Scholars Program at Guilford College. This study examines the perceived impact of leadership curriculum on the personal practices of leadership and the civic engagement for 14 undergraduate students. We present the findings through three themes highlighting (1) the shifts in the students’ philosophies of leadership …

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Dayton’s Committee on the Place-Based Two-Generation Approach to Poverty completed a working paper titled “A Call for Community Long-Term Recovery Plan” in January of 2021, arguing for an approach to recovery that is strategic, efficient, equity-focused, and regional. Practitioners and theorists connected to this document will address challenges and opportunities for addressing the rights of children in this area, particularly addressing the ways a regional approach can help to dismantle the legacy of historical injustices as we try to build back better.

The Shortcomings Of Corporate Accountability In Post-Conflict Colombia: Land, Rivers And Animals, Isabella Ariza Buitrago, Luisa Gomez Betancur
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Although the notion of sustainable peace requires acknowledging the role played by all actors, transitional processes around the world have inadequately addressed or completely ignored the direct and indirect participation of economic actors. In particular, Colombia's transitional justice regime left out corporations entirely. A skillshare between Colombian lawyers and US-based human rights attorneys showed some of the gaps that let corporations continue in impunity for profiting, benefiting from, or directly financing the conflict. Other than harming and deeply fracturing communities, the shortcomings of corporate accountability in post-conflict Colombia also leave land, rivers, and animals without redress. This paper explores some …

Correlation Of Economic Status And Trace Metals Concentrations In Surface Soils In The Houston Metropolitan Area., Sanata Dama
Correlation Of Economic Status And Trace Metals Concentrations In Surface Soils In The Houston Metropolitan Area., Sanata Dama
Dissertations (2016-Present)
Urban surface soils are contaminated by trace metals from various anthropogenic sources such as traffic and industrial facilities. Socio-economically disadvantaged communities are generally located closer to these sources and likely exposed more to toxic metals. This study aims to investigate the surface soil contamination by trace metals. Surface soils were collected from parks (n=75) and playgrounds of elementary schools (n=6) located in 33 postal codes split into four groups with different economic status (average annual household income) and industrial emissions (releases reported to the Toxic Release Inventory). Postal codes were ordered into high/middle income (> $40,000/year) without emissions, high/middle income …

Social Disorganization And Violent Crime Across Nonmetropolitan Areas Of Kentucky., Daniel Ray Jude
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This macro-level study examines the effects of social disorganization predictors on violent crime registered in nonmetropolitan areas of Kentucky from 2012 to 2016. The study intends to expand the line of research interested in verifying the applicability of the social disorganization theory (Shaw & McKay, 1942), including its new theoretical developments, to non-urban settings and plans to contribute to the literature willing to provide a better understanding of violent crime in rural areas. In response to Narag et al.’s (2009) call for a theoretical integration of environmental contaminants among the ecological factors that influence variations in crime, the study also …

Synching Science And Policy To Address Climate Change In Tribal Communities, John C. Ruple, Heather Tanana
Synching Science And Policy To Address Climate Change In Tribal Communities, John C. Ruple, Heather Tanana
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
Climate change is a global environmental problem, and yet, the adverse impacts of climate change are disproportionately felt in tribal communities. There are 574 federally recognized tribes in the United States. While each tribe is unique and independent, many tribes share a common history of colonization and a connection to the land—legally and culturally. The majority of tribal nations were removed from their traditional homelands and placed on reservations by the federal government. In doing so, the federal government established these reservations as a permanent home for the tribe. But that home is now threatened by climate change.
The article …
Community Empowerment In Decarbonization: Nepa’S Role, Wyatt G. Sassman
Community Empowerment In Decarbonization: Nepa’S Role, Wyatt G. Sassman
Washington Law Review
This Article addresses a potential tension between two ambitions for the transition to clean energy: reducing regulatory red-tape to quickly build out renewable energy, and leveraging that build-out to empower low-income communities and communities of color. Each ambition carries a different view of communities’ role in decarbonization. To those focused on rapid build-out of renewable energy infrastructure, communities are a potential threat who could slow or derail renewable energy projects through opposition during the regulatory process. To those focused on leveraging the transition to clean energy to advance racial and economic justice, communities are necessary partners in the key decisions …

Organizational Networking, Leadership, And Community Engagement: A Case Study Of The Revitalization Of An Impaired Watershed In Richmond, Virginia, Julia L. Roller
School of Professional and Continuing Studies Nonprofit Studies Capstone Projects
Green infrastructure is a necessary component of urban environments designed to mitigate climate instability and provide healthier living environments for urban residents. Discrimination and socio-economic status are some of the determining factors in the provision of green infrastructure, availability of green spaces, and outdoor programming available in urban communities. This paper describes an exploratory case study of the partnerships between municipal and nonprofit organizations involved in the revitalization of an impaired watershed in Richmond, Virginia. Preliminary findings suggest networking between agencies and nonprofits with strong mission alignment can increase organizational capacity by sharing specialized training and resources. Success may also …
Influence Of High Road Labor Policies And Practices On Renewable Energy Costs, Decarbonization Pathways, And Labor Outcomes, Erin Mayfield, Jesse Jenkins
Influence Of High Road Labor Policies And Practices On Renewable Energy Costs, Decarbonization Pathways, And Labor Outcomes, Erin Mayfield, Jesse Jenkins
Dartmouth Scholarship
Achieving an economy-wide net-zero greenhouse gas emissions goal by mid-century in the United States entails transforming the energy workforce. In this study, we focus on the influence of increased labor compensation and domestic manufacturing shares on (a) renewable energy technology costs, (b) the costs of transitioning the U.S. economy to net-zero emissions, and (c) labor outcomes, including total employment and wage benefits, associated with the deployment of utility-scale solar photovoltaics (PV) and land based and offshore wind power. We find that manufacturing and installation labor cost premiums as well as increases in domestic content shares across wind and utility-scale solar …
Development Of Sense Of Place Through An Urban Citizen Science Program, Cornelia Harris
Development Of Sense Of Place Through An Urban Citizen Science Program, Cornelia Harris
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Citizen science programs are a way for participants to develop a sense of place, which has been theorized to lead to pro-environmental behaviors. In this mixed-methods study, I document how a citizen science program encourages urban youth to connect with their place, and notice how both joy and wonder are developed as they experience a stunning migratory event with a unique organism, the American eel. Students were excited to be in a creek and to ‘discover’ a new creature in a place that they had walked past for years, one that was merely a backdrop to their lives prior to …
Composing A Comprehensive Music Education: Teacher And Student Experiences With The Role Of Songwriting In Elementary General Music, Tara Neeley
Master's Theses
Music education has for many years focused on the musical role of performance and teaching from the traditional canon of Western classical music. In recent years, it has been noted that just a small portion of students participate in music offerings in secondary schools. Yet, the mission of the music education profession is for all students to experience and make music. To reach more students, music education must be relevant to students’ real world, pragmatic for a lifetime of musical involvement, and must help students build their identities. Providing a comprehensive music education in which students experience all musical roles, …
