Indigenous Conceptions Of Community Organization And Autonomy In Oaxaca’S Sierra Norte: Answers And Resistance To State-Sponsored Practices Of Internal Colonialism, Carter Minnick
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Over the past century, the Mexican government has continued to reproduce dominant, colonial relationships with its indigenous populations. Within the last few decades, clashes between harmful neoliberal visions of national development and continued demands for indigenous autonomy have only intensified. In the context of such events, this present work seeks to explore a specific conception of community identity, coined as la comunalidad, in the Sierra Norte region of Oaxaca. After the breakdown of its most fundamental tenets, I will attempt to both underscore its position as a framework of resistance in combatting historical and ongoing state-organized aggressions against these communities, …

Elemental Relations: Fire & Culture, Daniel Lanza Rivers
Assignment Prompts
This assignment functions as the capstone task for my course AMS 159: Nature and World Cultures, and it asks students to use textual analysis, external research, and creative teamwork to produce installation material for the SJSU Thompson Art Gallery’s upcoming event series “Protecting Home: Sustainable Fire Management and the California Environment.” Throughout the third unit of my course, students are reading Stephen J. Pyne’s book Fire: a brief history. This assignment tracks with our reading of that text, and asks student teams to select a topic, facilitate classroom discussions of a chapter related to their topic, and then use research …

Land, Racial Formations, And Power: Exploring The Network Of Power Relationships During Climate Change Planning In Coastal South Carolina, Teresa Norman
Theses and Dissertations
Climate change projections for the coastline of South Carolina predict that by mid-century there will be around 1.2 feet of sea level rise, and potentially up to 4 feet of rise by 2100. Additionally, climate change is linked to intensified hurricanes, a hazard for the South Carolina coastline every year. Both of these scenarios result in increases in the regularity and severity of coastal flooding, making the threat of permanent or temporary displacement (relocation) from coastal lands a reality. This is a particularly pressing matter for African American communities already made vulnerable by the long history of racial discrimination in …

Holding Water For The City: Emergent Geographies Of Storage And The Urbanization Of Nature, Sayd Randle
Holding Water For The City: Emergent Geographies Of Storage And The Urbanization Of Nature, Sayd Randle
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
In the US West, water stories are often aqueduct stories, narratives of moving the vital resource from one place to another. This paper, in contrast, explores nascent efforts to keep the water still, in the name of helping buffer cities from the anticipated impacts of climate change. Scripted as potential holding sites for an urban water reserve, aquifers and the task of filling them now orient a range of policies and material investments across Southern California. Building on writings that explore the multi-scalar politics of storing and stockpiling vaccines, resources, and lively or uncooperative commodities, this analysis approaches storage as …

A Teenager’S Journey To Climate Advocacy In Puerto Rico, Ricardo Andrés Alvarado
A Teenager’S Journey To Climate Advocacy In Puerto Rico, Ricardo Andrés Alvarado
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
As a teenager with severe atopic dermatitis and asthma living in Puerto Rico, life has presented me with many obstacles and challenges that have shaped me into who I am. Living through powerful hurricanes, earthquakes and the COVID-19 pandemic has shone a bright light on the immediacy of the climate crisis. Our future is at stake, and the countdown to prevent and prepare is running out. I am discovering my role in promoting climate action as a vested stakeholder. How can an adolescent help and truly make a difference in the mitigation of climate change? Analyzing these issues from the …

Spatial Disparities: The Role Of Nativity In Neighborhood Exposure To Alcohol And Tobacco Retailers, Georgiana Bostean, Luis A. Sánchez, Jason A. Douglas
Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
Studies of retail environment, one of the social determinants of health, document racial/ethnic disparities in exposure to alcohol and tobacco (A and T) retailers, but have largely overlooked nativity. We examined associations between A and T retailer density and rates of foreign-born Latinx and foreign-born Asian residents in California census tracts (N = 7888), using spatial regressions and controlling for population and ecological confounders (e.g., population density, zoning, residential instability, urbanicity). Socio-demographic data came from the American Community Survey (2012–2016); census tract density of A and T retailers came from geocoded addresses from state license data for off-sale alcohol distributors …

Despite increasing recognition of the need for more diverse and equitable representation in the sciences, it is unclear whether measurable progress has been made. Here, we examine trends in authorship in coral reef science from 1,677 articles published over the past 16 years (2003–2018) and find that while representation of authors that are women (from 18 to 33%) and from non-OECD nations (from 4 to 13%) have increased over time, progress is slow in achieving more equitable representation. For example, at the current rate, it would take over two decades for female representation to reach 50%. Given that there are …
Online Activism And Real Life Environmentalism, Emily Grace Anderson
Online Activism And Real Life Environmentalism, Emily Grace Anderson
Dissertations and Theses
Past and present human activities have created and accelerated an array of environmental catastrophes and various systems in the environment remain under threat as a result of human behavior. In hopes of mitigating environmental consequences, a social movement has arisen to encourage people to behave in ways that are more environmentally sustainable. Research shows that individual behavior choices impact the environment, and this influence can be used to positively affect the environment through engagement in pro-environmental behavior. Like with many other social movements, the internet has been a tool in spreading awareness of a cause and allowing people the opportunity …
Why Intersectionality In Fiction Matters, Grace L. Dillon
Why Intersectionality In Fiction Matters, Grace L. Dillon
Indigenous Nations Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
In lieu of an abstract, here is an excerpt:
Indigenous peoples often say that from maewizhah, or time immemorial, we have gazed upon ae-iko-dawo-dunnauk-mishi-geezhik and created stories that are maumikaud-kummik. In other words, throughout our histories, Native peoples have looked to the heavens, pondered the universe, and composed fantastical tales that, translated literally, are “out of this world.”
This is the very definition of speculative fiction.
To us, storytellers are artists and medicine people who provide mishkiki: medicine, healing, and sometimes even solidarity — or, as we say in Anishinaabemowin, inauwinidiwin, which means collectively becoming a …

Tragic Trade-Offs Accompany Carnivore Coexistence In The Modern World, Jeremy T. Bruskotter, John A. Vucetich, Sophie L. Gilbert, Neil H. Carter, Kelly A. George
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Two vital policy aims—biodiversity conservation and food production—are increasingly in conflict. Efforts to evaluate trade-offs between agriculture and conservation have shaped scholarly discourse around two broad strategies to agricultural production that seek to either “share” land with biodiversity or “spare” land from agriculture. However, efforts to negotiate these trade-offs are challenged by rising concern for the welfare of individual animals, both wild and domestic. We use recent efforts to “coexist” with large carnivores to illustrate how sharing and sparing strategies both create tragic, and often unacknowledged trade-offs between livestock production and carnivore conservation. We conclude the best means of conserving …

People-Focused And Near-Term Public Transit Performance Analysis, Alex Karner
People-Focused And Near-Term Public Transit Performance Analysis, Alex Karner
Journal of Public Transportation
Public transit ridership forecasts have long played a role in understanding the potential success of a policy or investment, but their limitations have led researchers and practitioners to identify other performance analysis approaches. Accessibility, or the ease of reaching opportunities, has become very popular and widely used for this purpose. But commonly used accessibility measures also embody weaknesses that are seldom acknowledged; these limit their utility for truly understanding the benefits of transit investments. In this paper, we identify the pros and cons of these competing approaches and offer a third strategy. Specifically, we describe how revealed travel behavior data, …

The Contaminated Realities Of A Post-Ibm Endicott Today, Priya Desai
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
Endicott, a small town in the Southern Tier of New York, experienced great economic success due to the birth of IBM in 1911 through the late 1900s. Today, the town is left with environmental degradation and is tainted by carcinogens as a result. The post-industrial town has endured corporate-state mitigation efforts for years. This research will explore the realities of the toxic plume in the twenty years since operations have ended at the IBM-Endicott plant. Through implementing participant observations and a myriad of interviews with experts, including NYSDEC (New York State Department of Environmental Conservation) officials and Endicott residents, the …
Security, Dividedness And Green Activism In Egypt, Jihan Zakarriya
Security, Dividedness And Green Activism In Egypt, Jihan Zakarriya
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper attempts to trace green trends in contemporary political activism in Egypt. Taking into consideration the long, deep-rooted history of military rule in the country, it examines the interconnection between the concepts of security and resistance. The paper specifically focuses on post-2011 grassroots, civil and opposition movements in Egypt, arguing that they share and adopt green concerns with nonviolent, comprehensive activism that relate and politicize different forms of environmental, gender, socio-economic, and political violence. In this sense, to fight patriarchy and the militarization and securitization of public spaces and daily activities in Egypt, post-revolutionary activists, feminists, and opposition movements …

Climate Change, Environmental Justice And Children’S Health: Break The Cycle Of Climate Change By Cultivating Future Leaders, I Leslie Rubin, Nse Obot Witherspoon
Climate Change, Environmental Justice And Children’S Health: Break The Cycle Of Climate Change By Cultivating Future Leaders, I Leslie Rubin, Nse Obot Witherspoon
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Children are more vulnerable to adverse environmental factors than adults. Children from poor communities, who are predominantly children of color, are most vulnerable to adverse environmental factors and have fewer protective resources. This combination results in adverse health outcomes for the children and impacts their potential for the future. This scenario can be viewed as an intergenerational cycle of heath disparities. Although the scope of the problem is vast, positive changes can be made on small scales, which, collectively have a significant impact in reducing health disparities and promoting health equity for all children. We have developed a program called …
On The Street Where I Live: Mapping A Spectrum Of Antiracist Messages And Meanings, Carla Chamberlin
On The Street Where I Live: Mapping A Spectrum Of Antiracist Messages And Meanings, Carla Chamberlin
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This paper describes a critical media analysis of antiracist messages from both teaching and research perspectives. Antiracist discourse of public media (yard signs and websites) was collected in two communities in the Northeastern United States in 2020 and are discussed here, first as a site of social construction of antiracism, and second as a model for pedagogy. As a critical media analysis, this study reveals antiracist messages on continuums from passive to active, low-risk to high risk, self-oriented to other-oriented, and detached “not racist” postures to actively antiracist stances. These continuums encourage interrogation of what it means to be antiracist …
