"Florida Is A Blessed Country": Letters To Iowa From A Florida Settler, Pat Sonquist Lane

Florida Historical Quarterly

Letters from settlers have provided information and insights into the early history of our country. The letters here are about Gainesville and Charlotte Harbor, Florida, between 1885 and 1887, and were written by J. Albert Erickson, who had moved from north central Iowa to Florida in 1874. Erickson’s letters were sent to John A. Lindberg, editor of the Dayton (Iowa) Review, who published them.

The Tony Tommie Letter, 1916: A Transitional Seminole Document, Harry A. Kersey, Jr. Dec 2021

The Tony Tommie Letter, 1916: A Transitional Seminole Document, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

On October 4, 1916, a young Seminole boy named Tony Tommie wrote a letter to his friend Frank Stranahan, the trading post operator at Fort Lauderdale on the New River. Tony was sixteen years of age at the time, and had completed one year of instruction at the Fort Lauderdale elementary school. His brief note contained a plea for a $10.00 loan with which he could purchase a number of items, the most interesting of these being some “little alligator[s]” to be raised for re-sale to tourists. Unfortunately, there is no record of Stranahan’s response. However, given his long-standing friendship …

Development Of The Plan Of Pensacola During The Colonial Era, 1559-1821, Robert B. Lloyd, Jr. Dec 2021

Development Of The Plan Of Pensacola During The Colonial Era, 1559-1821, Robert B. Lloyd, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

The plan of present-day Pensacola reflects the influences of such colonial powers as Spain, France, and Great Britain. While all shared a common debt to ancient Roman practices of city design, each culture had its own idea of city planning that developed from its own particular history. The imposition of these ideas on Pensacola, and the accommodations that each culture had to make for the preceding one, led to an interesting and unique plan.

Reid V. Barry: The Legal Battle Over The "Best Location" In Orlando, Jane Quinn

Florida Historical Quarterly

The Florida Supreme Court case, Robert R. Reid et al. v. Bishop Patrick Barry, cleared the cloud of title of the Roman Catholic Church to its downtown Orlando property. The final decree in Circuit Court, Seventeenth Judicial Circuit, was announced in Orlando, on June 21, 1927. The judgment also established that in Florida a bishop is a corporation sole and that a deed of property to him and to his successors conveys ownership in the bishop’s corporate capacity. The bishop who was first involved in this lawsuit was John Moore of St. Augustine, who presided over the Catholic Diocese of …

A Swiss Settler In East Florida: A Letter Of Francis Philip Fatio, William Scott Willis Dec 2021

A Swiss Settler In East Florida: A Letter Of Francis Philip Fatio, William Scott Willis

Florida Historical Quarterly

A letter written by Francis Philip Fatio, who settled in East Florida in 1771 and remained there until his death in 1811, was recently discovered among some papers in a desk given to The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Florida for use in the Ximenez-Fatio House in St. Augustine. Written by Fatio from New Switzerland, his plantation on the St. Johns River, to his wife in St. Augustine, the letter is dated October 18, 1800. It provides not only intimate glimpses of life on an East Florida plantation during the Second Spanish Period …

A Second Chance: Cary Nicholas And Frontier Florida, Dennis Golladay Dec 2021

A Second Chance: Cary Nicholas And Frontier Florida, Dennis Golladay

Florida Historical Quarterly

On the morning of July 17, 1821, the inhabitants of Pensacola gathered around the town’s public square to witness the ceremony marking the transfer of the Floridas from Spanish to American control. Among the new American residents in the crowd was Cary Nicholas, a thirty-four-year-old transplanted Kentuckian who, like so many others, saw in the territory the prospect for a new start in a life too full of disappointments and failures.

St. Augustine Historical Society, 1883-1983, Thomas Graham Dec 2021

St. Augustine Historical Society, 1883-1983, Thomas Graham

Florida Historical Quarterly

The St. Augustine Historical Society began as an informal gathering of a few individuals who met in the downstairs parlor of the Presbyterian manse on the corner of St. George and Hypolita streets. Dr. Milton Waldo, the Presbyterian minister, would converse on a regular basis with acquaintances who shared his interest in natural history. Because of its casual origin the date of the first Society meeting is uncertain. Dr. Waldo later recalled that he and Charlie Johnson, a local boy who would later be a natural history museum curator in Boston, began meeting together over insect and shell specimens in …

Florida's Cattle-Ranching Frontier: Manatee And Brevard Counties (1860), John Solomon Otto Dec 2021

Florida's Cattle-Ranching Frontier: Manatee And Brevard Counties (1860), John Solomon Otto

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1860, the eve of the Civil War, the southern edge of settlement, which delimited the “settled” areas with more than two persons per square mile from the “frontier” areas with fewer than two inhabitants per square mile, stood in central Florida. With the exception of a settled area along eastern Tampa Bay, the southern half of the Florida peninsula was a true frontier. South Florida, in fact, was the largest remaining frontier east of the Mississippi River.

"This Wizard Of The Cooking Stove": How P.G. Wodehouse Contributed To The Field Of Gastronomy Through Anatole, The French Chef, In The Jeeves-And-Wooster Series, Elizabeth Wilson, Anke Klitzing

European Journal of Food Drink and Society

Priscilla Parkhurst Ferguson’s premise that Balzac, a realist fiction author, contributed to the cultural field of gastronomy by his ethnographically accurate depictions of restaurants in mid-nineteenth-century Paris, prompts asking whether this may be true for other fiction authors that painstakingly reflect the foodways of their time and place, such as English author P.G. Wodehouse through his character, the French chef Anatole, in the Jeeves-and-Wooster series. Thematic analysis found three gastronomic themes surrounding Anatole that could be confirmed as historically accurate. The highly-skilled chef employed in the country houses of the Edwardian upper class possessed cultural capital through his professional capabilities …

Food, Comfort And Community: Media Coverage Of Last Meals For The Dying, Tina Sikka Dec 2021

Food, Comfort And Community: Media Coverage Of Last Meals For The Dying, Tina Sikka

European Journal of Food Drink and Society

This article examines the media coverage of food in the context of community-based end of life rituals and death meals that are increasingly being observed by those undergoing a medically assisted death (medical assistance in dying: MAID). I employ a reconstituted form of media analysis that aims to identify and unpack the socio-cultural themes, values, and assumptions that underpin these food events. These include the central frame of plenty, community/family, personality, comfort, and gender. My objective is to provoke a discussion about how media coverage acts as a site from which to understand the significance of food in the context …

Improving Teaching Ict Using Cognitive Competence In Primary Education, Jasur Amirddinovich Mardonkulov

Central Asian Journal of Education

Human society is unthinkable outside of communication. Communication is a necessary condition for the existence of people, without which it is impossible to fully form not only individual mental functions, processes and properties of a person, but also the personality as a whole. The reality and necessity of communication is determined by joint activity: in order to live, people are forced to interact. Always an active person communicates, whose activities intersect with the activities of other people. Communication allows you to organize social activities and enrich it with new connections and relationships between people.

Nsfw: Not So Feminist Women - A Media And Cultural Studies Analysis Of Working Women In Popular Media, Josephine Schofield Dec 2021

Nsfw: Not So Feminist Women - A Media And Cultural Studies Analysis Of Working Women In Popular Media, Josephine Schofield

Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies

Even though gender diversity of characters has increased in television shows and films, this study hypothesized that female characters who are presented as feminist icons function as feminist backlash and perpetuate negative and harmful stereotypes. This was found to be especially true for career-focused women. Applying a cultural studies approach to reading television and film studies through a feminist lens identified the antifeminist factors that continue to cause the perpetual loop of independent women reverting to dated social roles. This research connects what audiences consume through popular media to how they perceive their female co-workers. The findings of this study …

Understanding Real Estate Market Dynamics: The Covid-19 Effect, Faith Winslow

Honors Projects in Finance

The covid-19 pandemic has led to significant shifts in consumer trends, including in the real estate market. Through multivariable regression, this study investigates how covid-19 has impacted the demand as well as pricing for houses in the United States. The findings contribute to the literature in a few major ways. First, they provide a current look at the impact of covid-19 on the housing market by analyzing monthly, state-level data from before and during the pandemic. Secondly, they provide clarity and supplement journals and research currently in the works. This is the first national study that looks at the effect …

A Call To Create: Poetry As Healing And One Nurse’S Self-Discovery, Kim Cornett Henry, Kim Cornett Henry

English Theses

Florence Nightingale’s vision for nursing has changed greatly in the past one hundred and fifty years, with nursing’s identity replaced with an emphasis on science over caring. The fast-paced, technologically sophisticated environments, designed to meet the declining health of an American public, have resulted in nurses who are being pulled away from nurse-to-patient caring acts and the reasons they felt called to become nurses. These changes have had detrimental psychological and emotional effects on nurses and are especially evident in Intensive Care nurses. Expressive writing as poetry, autoethnography, and participation in vibrant writing communities offer nurses experiences for healing, voice, …

Girlpwrd: Amplifying Silenced Voices Of Women Through Digital Storytelling, Brooke Schumann Dec 2021

Girlpwrd: Amplifying Silenced Voices Of Women Through Digital Storytelling, Brooke Schumann

English Theses

Drawing on data from a multi-month digital storytelling community project, this qualitative case study offers portraits of three marginalized women who re-author pivotal moments of silencing in their lives. The foundational framework blends scholarship on rhetorical silence, rhetorical listening, and semiotics of multimodal expression. These cases demonstrate how digital storytelling allows women a space to form and give voice to their silence, where they are the empowered agents of their own stories. The digital platform elevates these underrepresented narratives by creating new pathways for listening.
