Ilang Repleksiyon Sa “Utak Mo May Covid” Bilang Sinulti At Ekspresyon Sa Social Media, Mark Anthony Angeles

Bakit Dapat Manaliksik Sa Filipino Ang Mga Pilipino?: Kritik Sa Scopus-Sentrismo Ng Mga Unibersidad At Ahensiyang Pang- Edukasyon At/O Pampananaliksik Sa Pilipinas, David Michael San Juan

Sunurang Pagtamo Ng Mga Batayang Pangungusap Ng Filipino Bilang Ikalawang Wika Ng Mga Mag-Aaral Na Tsino, Hapones, At Koreano: Isang Panimulang Pag-Aaral, Ronel O. Laranjo

Property And Local Knowledge, Malcolm Lavoie Dec 2021

Property And Local Knowledge, Malcolm Lavoie

Catholic University Law Review

Property rights play an important but largely under-appreciated role in channeling local knowledge into decisions about physical resources. Property devolves decision-making authority to a dispersed pool of owners, who are likely to be aware of local conditions relevant to their resources. As a result, property owners are often in a position to make better-informed decisions about the use of the resource than other parties. The homeowner who preemptively repairs an old roof, the retailer who offers a new product for sale, and the farmer who decides to switch crops are all decision-makers who are empowered through property rights to act …

Text Contention Behind Sharia Supervisory Board Reports: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Ari Ermawati, M Nur A Birton, Irfan Tarmizi, Muhammad Muttaqin

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

Sharia Supervisory Board Reports (SSBRs) have an interest in convincing the public that entities supervised by a Sharia Supervisory Board (SSB) are sharia-compliant and reflective of Good Corporate Governance (GCG) practices. Failure in public convincing will be detrimental to Islamic banks’ reputation as well as the SSB’s image and credibility. This study aimed to critically assess how the SSB produces reports as texts to persuade the public using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). We analyzed four SSBRs from two Islamic Commercial Banks (ICBs) and two Islamic Business Units (IBUs) owned by other ICBs as well as interviews for data triangulation. We …

Broca’s area is frequently implicated in sentence comprehension but its specific role is debated. Most lesion studies have investigated deficits at the chronic stage. We aimed (1) to use acute imaging to predict which left hemisphere stroke patients will recover sentence comprehension; and (2) to better understand the role of Broca’s area in sentence comprehension by investigating acute deficits prior to functional reorganization. We assessed comprehension of canonical and noncanonical sentences in 15 patients with left hemisphere stroke at acute and chronic stages. LASSO regression was used to conduct lesion symptom mapping analyses. Patients with more severe word-level comprehension deficits …

Reginald Smith Brindle’S Concept Of Tonal-Atonal Equilibrium In Theory And Practice, Oliver Chandler Dec 2021

Reginald Smith Brindle’S Concept Of Tonal-Atonal Equilibrium In Theory And Practice, Oliver Chandler

Soundboard Scholar

In an attempt to explain how post-tonal harmonic progressions might “make sense,” Reginald Smith Brindle formulated theories of tension flow and tonal-atonal equilibrium in his 1966 textbook, Serial Composition. The former theory compares the number of consonant and/or dissonant intervals between chords, albeit without providing a consistent means of distinguishing between similar sonorities; the latter observes that various musical passages strike a balance between functional and non-functional harmony, albeit without explaining the nature of said balance. While his ideas are evocative, they lack theoretical finesse. Placing them in dialogue with recent developments in post-tonal scholarship helps to unlock their …

“Now Let Us Shift”: A Case Study Of Developmental Education Reform In A Hispanic Serving Community College, Audrey Baca

Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice

Background: Latina/o/x students who persist to college are likely to enter through community college (Contreras & Contreras, 2018) and until the enactment of California Assembly Bill 705, would have been susceptible to placement in developmental education courses (Rodriguez, Cuellar Mejia, & Johnson, 2018). The implementation of AB 705 shifted the requirements for new student placement in all 115 California Community Colleges. With compliance mandated by Fall 2019, the law required colleges to "maximize the probability" that entering students enroll and complete transfer-level English or mathematics within a one-year timeframe and within a three-year timeframe for students enrolled in English …

Beyond "Bad" Cops: Historicizing And Resisting Surveillance Culture In Universities, Amy J. Wan, Lindsey Albracht Dec 2021

Beyond "Bad" Cops: Historicizing And Resisting Surveillance Culture In Universities, Amy J. Wan, Lindsey Albracht

Publications and Research

In this article, we define and examine surveillance culture within US college classrooms, a logical extension of pervasive carceral and capitalist logics that underlie the US educational system, in which individual success is tied to behavior monitoring, rule following, and sorting, particularly within marginalized student populations. Reflecting anxieties about the expansion of educational access, we argue for how crisis and change have historically contributed to the
urgency and opportunity to expand surveillance culture and consider why this has continued to happen as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. We offer suggestions and alternatives to surveillance culture that have helped us …

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Since the American occupation of Manila, the health care system of the Philippines was transformed with its goal of “modernizing the Philippines.” Systematic Western prevention and control measures and institutions were established. This in turn affected the practice of Chinese medicine, which was present since the Spanish period. With the help of Dr. Tee Hankee and other doctors, local Chinese medicine gradually developed into a combination of Chinese and Western medicine through the developments of the Chinese General Hospital and the establishment of the Filipino Chinese Western Medicine Association. The melding of Chinese and Western medicine formed a distinctive Philippine …

Struggle For Substantive Justice And Community Development: Transgender Subjects In Contemporary India, Pushpesh Kumar Dec 2021

Struggle For Substantive Justice And Community Development: Transgender Subjects In Contemporary India, Pushpesh Kumar

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

This paper discusses the transgender community's fight for justice and developmental rights since 2014 and the response of the Indian Government toward this assertion. The point of choosing 2014 as the starting point is not because the fight for their justice actually begins in this year but because India witnessed an intensification and an increase in public visibility of transgenders’ mobilization following the recognition of members of transgender communities as legal citizens through the landmark Indian Supreme Court (Court) verdict called the National Legal Services Authority Union of India (NALSA). In documenting transgenders’ mobilization and the state's response, the author …

Gameplays Versus Playstyles: The Social Construction Of Transmediated Communities Among Filipino Children Gamers In Minecraft And Roblox, Cheeno Marlo Sayuno

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

The children of today’s generation are considered as digital natives, which means that they have the capacity to navigate technological terrains to the best of their abilities and create online communities in new storyworlds. Minecraft and Roblox, two sandbox open-world mobile games, are manifestations of such ability to create worlds, survive in difficult gaming situations, face opponents in combat, and interact with players within a community. Even more so, such transmedia engagements allow the child participants, as evidenced in this study, to transact with players and the app itself to introduce new playstyle strategies that complement or subvert the gameplays …

Meaning-Making Dynamics Of Job Interview Performances, Jacquelyn K. Bertman Dec 2021

Meaning-Making Dynamics Of Job Interview Performances, Jacquelyn K. Bertman

Graduate Masters Theses

Behavioral interviewing has become a popular technique used across fields to assess the fitness of job seekers (Roulin & Bangerter, 2012; Powers, 2000). This particular style of interviewing calls on the interviewee to narrate their prior experiences in the workforce, with the idea that past behavior on the job is prelude to future job performance. The answers (stories) follow a specific format in order to be considered successful, one that adheres to the style and organization of the dominant Discourse (Gee, 1989). However, storytelling is a culturally situated practice and candidates from diverse backgrounds may construct their narratives outside of …

Archaeology Of Disease And Medicinal Practices In 18th-Century Boston, Massachusetts, Kaitlyn N. Ball

Graduate Masters Theses

This research explores the knowledge of medical techniques during the early 18th century in Boston, Massachusetts, a period of modernization and changing attitudes toward disease. By analyzing archaeoparasitological samples, written accounts, and artifacts associated with medicinal practices, I shed light on attempts to treat parasitic diseases encountered by those living in urban Boston. The collections I have selected to analyze are samples of urban Boston life and provide ideal contexts for parasite preservation. I analyze samples from the Parker-Emery household privy (c. 1720-1750) in the North End and compare them to samples from the early 18th-century Town Dock landfill in …

Creating Community: Examining Black Identity And Space In New Guinea, Nantucket, Jared Muehlbauer

Graduate Masters Theses

In the late 18th century, the abolition of slavery through manumission initiated a period of enormous change in the lives of people of African descent living on Nantucket, MA. Newly free, people of color living on the island immediately began to establish families and purchase property. At the end of the 1700s, they founded the community of New Guinea, located on the southwestern edge of the town of Nantucket. Though enslavement had been abolished and the whaling industry brought economic opportunity to Nantucket, the people of New Guinea continued to experience evolving forms of racial inequality, discrimination, and violence.
