Emotion Disclosure In Spanish And English Bilinguals, Maya Cohrssen-Hernandez Jan 2021

Emotion Disclosure In Spanish And English Bilinguals, Maya Cohrssen-Hernandez

Scripps Senior Theses

Previous literature has identified a difference in emotion comprehension and production of bilinguals. This study aimed to explore differences in emotion expression in the first language (L1) and the second language (L2) among Spanish and English bilinguals. The bilingual participants were interviewed and asked to recount two frustrating events, one in their L1 and one in their L2. These interviews were analyzed for the occurrence of four semantic categories: emotion words (with a subcategory of negative emotion words), emotion-laden words, expressive interjections, and intensifiers that strengthen content words. The data indicated that Spanish and English bilinguals both used more emotion …

Deconstructing Social Anxiety: Through Gifs And The Inspiration Of Artists' Books, Ashley Hsieh Jan 2021

Deconstructing Social Anxiety: Through Gifs And The Inspiration Of Artists' Books, Ashley Hsieh

Scripps Senior Theses

My project deconstructs social anxiety through the form of gifs. This is an important issue to address especially now, as it is one the most current stressors for my peers and myself upon returning to school after over a year in quarantine. Although not everyone has had the same experience, there is a large concern for students’ mental health and well-being post-pandemic. Learning how to re-navigate socializing after a year in isolation has been exhausting, physically and mentally, adjusting to places and new faces on campus. My work is composed of a series of three digital gifs that depict different …

Marine Debris Removal: A Case Study On South Korean Marine Litter Management, Eliya M. Baron Lopez Jan 2021

Marine Debris Removal: A Case Study On South Korean Marine Litter Management, Eliya M. Baron Lopez

Open Access Master's Theses

Marine plastic pollution is an ongoing global problem, with adverse consequences on human health and marine ecosystems, and requires diverse solutions to eliminate leakages into the oceans via rivers, waste outflows, and direct dumping from vessels. Developed coastal states, like South Korea, have been quietly investing in marine litter management strategies that focus on coastal areas. South Korea is required by national law to establish marine debris management plans that implement policies to address the prevention, collection, and promotion of marine litter. One of these strategies include the implementation of floating debris containment booms (FDCB) in South Korean coastal and …

Reclaiming Black And Indigenous Ecologies On Block Island Through Oral History And Ethnography, Adrian Cato Jan 2021

Reclaiming Black And Indigenous Ecologies On Block Island Through Oral History And Ethnography, Adrian Cato

Open Access Master's Theses

Public memory on Block Island largely ignores Black and Indigenous labor, life, and legacy. Reclaiming the past and present narratives of Black and Indigenous peoples on Block Island challenges historical erasure; their experiences can then become a meaningful part of the collective public memory of the region. Black and Indigenous women are a key aspect of erased and reclaimed memory, often tasked with maintaining place for their families over generations, upholding their connection to their land and their history - depended upon to maintain and pass down tradition. Developing new memory worlds would mean recognizing the contributions of Black-Indigenous peoples, …

Is Parent Report Of Bilingual Children's Language Environment As Valid As We Think?, Gabrielle Zeyl

Open Access Master's Theses

Researchers have defined bilingual language proficiency and dominance in different ways for decades; however, to date there is no standard, systematic description used by the scientific community to quantify bilingual children’s language skills. Parent report questionnaires have been regarded as a valid measure of a child’s language skill. The purpose of this study is to explore the validity of parent report of their child’s language use when compared to hand coded audio segments retrieved using the Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA) System. Additionally, this study explores potential differences in the number of conversational turns and amount of child-directed speech between monolingual …

Executive Functioning In College Students With Comorbid Anxiety And Depression Symptoms, Lauren Thompson Jan 2021

Executive Functioning In College Students With Comorbid Anxiety And Depression Symptoms, Lauren Thompson

Open Access Master's Theses

Few studies have investigated how comorbidity, the presence of two or more distinct disorders in an individual, is related to executive functioning impairments. Executive functioning consists of cognitive processes that control planning and goal-oriented behavior and contribute to perceived quality of life, physical health, and job performance. Impairments in executive functioning in young adults are associated with poorer academic performance and psychological disorders, such as depression and anxiety. The present study investigated whether A) college students with symptoms characteristic of comorbid major depressive disorder and anxiety would self-report impaired executive functioning and a lower grade point average (GPA) compared to …

The Sustainable Jewelry Context In Brazil, Lauren Machado Jan 2021

The Sustainable Jewelry Context In Brazil, Lauren Machado

Open Access Master's Theses

While prior studies have reported unsustainable practices in the jewelry industry, consumers are becoming increasingly conscious about brands’ sustainable behaviors (or lack of) (Abdelmeguid et al., 2019; Kutter & Castilhos, 2017). Brazil is an important landmark in the jewelry business, and it is one of the world’s most important gem suppliers (Boehm, 2012). Therefore, the Brazilian jewelry industry is facing the need to adapt and behave sustainably (Severo et al., 2017). Since a lack of sustainability knowledge is often referred to be the one of biggest barriers towards more sustainable consumption (Tseng & Hung, 2013), it …

Undergraduate Student Perceptions Of The Qualities Of Effective Online Software Instructional Video, Chelsy Hooper Jan 2021

Although these symptoms frequently co-occur, little is known regarding whether patterns of symptom comorbidity exist across these conditions. The present study identified empirically-derived profiles of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and domains of sexual function and satisfaction among 348 college women who had experienced sexual violence. A four-profile solution was identified. The first profile, Resilient (RES), was characterized by low severity of PTSD and sexual functioning complaints. A second profile, Sexual Distress (SEXDISS), was characterized by greatest endorsement of …

Multivariate Analysis For Understanding Cognitive Speech Processing, Md Sultan Mahmud Jan 2021

Multivariate Analysis For Understanding Cognitive Speech Processing, Md Sultan Mahmud

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Categorical perception (CP) of audio is critical to understand how the human brainperceives speech sounds despite widespread variability in acoustic properties. Most studiesthat examine cognitive speech processing have applied methodological approaches that focuson specific or a set of brain regions. Departing from hypothesis-driven approaches, in thisdissertation, we proposed multivariate data-driven approaches to identify the spatiotemporal(i.e., when in time and where in the brain) and spectral (i.e., frequency-band power levels)characteristics of auditory neural activity that reflects CP for speech (i.e., differentiatesphonetic prototypes from ambiguous speech sounds). We recorded 64-channel EEG aslisteners rapidly classified vowel sounds along an acoustic-phonetic continuum. We usedparameter …

Individual Auditory Categorization Abilities Are Shaped By Intrinsic And Experience-Driven Neural Factors, Kelsey Mankel Jan 2021

Individual Auditory Categorization Abilities Are Shaped By Intrinsic And Experience-Driven Neural Factors, Kelsey Mankel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

To make sense of the auditory world, listeners must organize diverse, continuously varying sounds into meaningful perceptual categories. The auditory categorization process is believed to be a foundational skill for language development and speech perception. Despite decades of behavioral research, neuroscientific evidence is only beginning to uncover where, when, and how auditory categories arise in the brain. Although it has been proposed that categorical perception is shaped by both innate (nature) and experience-driven (nurture) factors, it is unclear how these features manifest neurally at the individual level. In the first study of this dissertation, we recorded multi-channel electroencephalography (EEG) in …

My DTCAs were mined from the top ten programs (Neilsen Ratings), during the last three months of originally aired shows of the 2016 and 2018 season. All of the narratives are either a classic drama or vignette and are messages that communicate wellness or a restoration of health. Other results show a distinct difference between the narratives that are communicated visually versus verbally, with the majority of transportation and identification cues contained in the visual …

Investigating Speech Rate Alignment In Individuals With Traumatic Brain Injury, Megan Battles Parsons Jan 2021

Investigating Speech Rate Alignment In Individuals With Traumatic Brain Injury, Megan Battles Parsons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The alignment of verbal and nonverbal behaviors is important for conversation. Research has shown that interactive behavior alignment is commonly impaired following a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and the ability for an individual with TBI to align their speech rate with their conversational partners can be affected. This non-convergence of speech rates can lead to negative social outcomes, including perceptions of decreased social connectedness and decreased willingness of conversational partners to engage in conversation. Despite these negative outcomes, researchers have yet to discover a therapeutic technique to increase speech rate convergence, and in turn, lead to positive social outcomes during …

A Poet's Guide To Loving Yourself, Massey Armistead

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A Poets Guide to Loving Yourself asks the question, how do we move from grief of losing another to a place of empowerment and fulfillment? The poems explore the dual nature of being human, such as wanting independence while also desiring the affection of another. The use of narrative and emotionally driven language show the evolution of a woman transforming from a place of self-doubt and insecurity to one of wholeness in her place in the world and an understanding that she is valued for simply being. The use of the aubade is heavy in this collection and the speaker …

How Do Classroom Teachers In Urban Charter Schools Enact Humanizing Pedagogy Amid Neoliberal Education Reform? A Case Study From The American South, Michelle R. Armstrong Jan 2021

How Do Classroom Teachers In Urban Charter Schools Enact Humanizing Pedagogy Amid Neoliberal Education Reform? A Case Study From The American South, Michelle R. Armstrong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Neoliberal education reform perpetuates the dehumanizing belief in individual merit within high-stakes testing environments. As a result, schooling experiences continue to disenfranchise historically marginalized African American children because of the overreliance on narrow standards to deem students proficient in their academic progress or not. Therefore, the purpose of this narrative case study was to examine the humanizing practices that classroom teachers enact within high-stakes testing environments of state and locally authorized urban charter schools in Tennessee that primarily serve African American students. The study found that classroom teachers acknowledge the problematic nature of the high-stakes testing and accountability environments in …

An Investigation Of The Relative Impacts Of Hearing Aid Self-Efficacy And Personality On Aspects Of Hearing Aid Success, Lipika Sarangi Jan 2021

An Investigation Of The Relative Impacts Of Hearing Aid Self-Efficacy And Personality On Aspects Of Hearing Aid Success, Lipika Sarangi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

It has been hypothesized that patient factors such as self-efficacy and personality impact aspects of hearing aid (HA) success. Thus, researchers have recommended that clinicians incorporate these factors while planning individualized audiologic rehabilitation. However, the different contributions of these factors have not been evaluated in tandem. Additionally, most of these factors are evaluated using generalized measures. It is unclear whether general measures reflect nuanced psychosocial impacts of listening in difficult environments. This dissertation evaluated the relative impacts of patient factors on aspects of HA success using a series of quantitative and qualitative studies.First, we evaluated the associations between hearing aid …

Danish Cedar Falls, Carrie Eilderts Jan 2021

Danish Cedar Falls, Carrie Eilderts

The Bridge

In 1855, Frederick Petersen’s family became the first Danish immigrants on record to settle in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Petersens came from the Schleswig area on the Danish/German border, and in 1860, Christian Petersen came to Cedar Falls, also from Schleswig. More Danish families moved to Cedar Falls from Pine River, Wisconsin in 1866, and the next year Danes began arriving directly from their homeland after enduring a long journey by ship and train. By the early 1870s, Danes were settling in Cedar Falls in large numbers. By 1871, three hundred Danes called the city home, making up about ten …

Danes In Kenmare, North Dakota, Bertel Schou

The Bridge

The town of Kenmare, in Denmark Township in the northern part of Ward County, North Dakota, is famous for its Danish windmill, one of only three in the United States (the other two are in Elk Horn, Iowa and Solvang, California). The mill, with its gears of hand-hewn maple, was built eleven miles north of Kenmare by a Danish immigrant named Christian C. Jensen in 1902 and was in daily operation until 1918. It was transported into the center of Kenmare in 1958, restored in 1961, and moved to its current location on downtown Park Square in 1965. It doesn’t …

From Bornholm To Jamestown: C. C. Beck And The Settlement Of Danish Immigrants In Chautauqua County, New York And Warren County, Pennsylvania, John Everett Jones

The Bridge

One of the earliest Danish immigrant settlements in North America was a community in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania called Jamestown. Marcus P. Jacobsen has been recognized as the first person from Bornholm to settle in the Jamestown area1 in 1855 or 1856, and early on, members of this community came almost exclusively from Bornholm. However, histories have not recognized the importance of Charles C. Beck in the origin of this community. Emigration from Bornholm has been written about by Henning Bender2 this article adds to that research by situating Beck within the larger community of Danish immigrants who …

Covid-19 Mutual Aid, Anti-Authoritarian Activism, And The Law, Michael Haber Jan 2021

Covid-19 Mutual Aid, Anti-Authoritarian Activism, And The Law, Michael Haber

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

As the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe in the spring of 2020, thousands of grassroots, participatory, and often social movement-connected community efforts to help feed, shelter, and care for one another through the crisis were launched, many of which identified their projects as “mutual aid.” This article presents an overview of mutual aid and gives an introduction to the legal issues being confronted by mutual aid groups. It begins by presenting a history of mutual aid practices, principally in the U.S. context, situating mutual aid within the political framework of anti-authoritarian activism. It then gives an overview of common …

Corporate Entanglement With Religion And The Suppression Of Expression, Ronald J. Colombo Jan 2021

Corporate Entanglement With Religion And The Suppression Of Expression, Ronald J. Colombo

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The power and ability of corporations to assert their First Amendment rights to the detriment of others remains both a controversial and unresolved issue. Adverting to relevant strands of existing jurisprudence and certain constitutionally relevant factors, this Article suggests a solution. The path turns upon the recognition that whereas some corporations are appropriately categorized as rights-bearing entities (akin to associations), others are more appropriately categorized as "entities against which the rights of individuals can be asserted." Legislation, in the form of the draft "CENSOR" Act, is provided as a means by which to implement this categorization. What hopefully emerges is …

Virtuous Law-Breaking, G. Alex Sinha Jan 2021

Virtuous Law-Breaking, G. Alex Sinha

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

A rapidly growing body of scholarship embraces virtue jurisprudence, a series of (often ad hoc) attempts to incorporate the philosophical tradition of virtue ethics into legal theory. Broadly understood, virtue ethics describes an approach to moral questions that emphasizes the importance of developing and embodying various virtues, often as manifestations of human flourishing. Scholars typically contrast virtue ethics with deontological and consequentialist moral theories, tracing virtue-centered analysis to ancient Greek philosophers, and in particular to Aristotle. Virtue ethics has experienced a revival over the past 65 years; but, long before that, it proved especially influential in Catholic moral thought, particularly …
