Seeding Change: What Vvh Can Teach Us About Teaching And Learning In Digital Spaces, Michelle Ciccone Dec 2021

Seeding Change: What Vvh Can Teach Us About Teaching And Learning In Digital Spaces, Michelle Ciccone

Journal of Media Literacy Education

In this essay, I reflect on a central question: “why did I experience something so profoundly different in Virtually Viral Hangouts (VVH) than I was able to help seed in my own district during the COVID-19 crisis?” I identify three key components of the VVH ethos that inspired new ways of thinking, namely: digital technologies free us from constraints to build something different, digital technologies are most effective when we use them to build community, and digital collaboration enables us to tap into the wisdom of the group. As we build better and more humane educational spaces, it is important …

Using Gamification To Teach And Engage Students In The Act Of Summary Writing, Quang C. Ly Dec 2021

Using Gamification To Teach And Engage Students In The Act Of Summary Writing, Quang C. Ly

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This study uses the concept of gamification to engage first-year students in the act of summary writing. The researcher argues that writing instructors should consider ways to gamify concepts in their curriculum to bring novelty and active involvement to course materials. The researcher uses Robson et al.’s (2015) mechanics, dynamics, and emotions framework and Groh’s (2012) principles of relatedness, competence, and autonomy to explain and justify the integration of gamification to the summary genre. Of the typical gaming elements used in gamification, the researcher relies on the uses of digital badges as a motivator and as a sign of credentials …

A Local Lens On Global Media Literacy: Teaching Media And The Arab World, Katharina Schmoll Dec 2021

A Local Lens On Global Media Literacy: Teaching Media And The Arab World, Katharina Schmoll

Journal of Media Literacy Education

The globalization and transnationalization of media use have facilitated access to voices from the Arab world. Students and teachers in Western higher education can make use of these voices within and outside the classroom to enhance students’ knowledge of the region and challenge Eurocentric imaginations of the ‘Other’. Yet to ensure students engage with these Arab sources in a meaningful way, media literacy is key. Drawing on and challenging a framework of global critical media literacy, this article argues that media literacy is grounded in time and space, meaning an effective teaching of global media literacy skills supposes an awareness …

An Approach To Creative Media Literacy For World Issues, Abduljalil Nasr Hazaea Dec 2021

An Approach To Creative Media Literacy For World Issues, Abduljalil Nasr Hazaea

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This article introduces an approach to creative media literacy for world issues (WIs) such as Covid-19. In so doing, the article integrates four positions on discourse and media as terrible facets of globalization in the context of critical discourse analysis (CDA). The objectivist position deals with WIs as neutral discourse shared among humanity and distributed through English as an international language and educational media. The ideologist position treats creative media literacy as relations of power between global and local identities in the form of competing discourses associated with WIs. The rhetorical position reveals the hidden strategies used in global media …

Seeking Truth About Muslims: Critical Media Literacies In An Era Of Islamophobia, Matthew Deroo

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Across various forms of media, Muslims are often portrayed as a homogenous group prone to violence, yet scholars have increasingly called upon schools and teachers to transcend stereotypes and prepare students to understand Muslims in more thoughtful and nuanced ways. This qualitative case study recounts how students and a teacher in a high school multicultural studies class investigated problematic media materials about Islam sent by an organization called the Christian Seniors Association. Drawing upon Mihailidis’s (2014) 5A’s of Media Literacy heuristic, I analyzed field notes from classroom observations, interviews, and student produced artifacts. Findings revealed how a teacher’s use of …

Central Asian Journal of Medicine

It's no secret that with the development of information technology, many ethical problems of biomedicine have become aggravated. This is especially true of the issue of medical secrecy and protection of patient data. Digital medicine requires the opposite specifically in emergency situations: to disclose all the data concerning the course of the disease in order to reduce its further spread. Every day we read or watch videos from all over the world in the media about sick people and how their diseases are progressing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Confidentiality protection of personal data, information and software support of the user, …

The COVID-19 has been confirmed to spread from person to person, mainly transmitting through respiratory secretions or direct contact. At present, the diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia is based on clinical symptoms, contact history of epidemic area, imaging diagnosis, and nucleic acid detection. However, false negative in nucleic acid detection has been reported, and the clinical symptoms may be atypical that may cause misdiagnosis and make the situation spread. Therefore, the imaging examination becomes particularly important [1]. Incubation period for COVID-19 is usually is 3-7 days, but not more than 14 days, contamination occurs during the incubation period. The main symptoms …

Results Of Morphological Studies Of Various Forms Of Chronic Tonsillitis, Firdavs N. Nordjigitov, Jamolbek A. Djuraev

Central Asian Journal of Medicine

Traditionally, the diagnosis of chronic tonsillitis is based on the assessment of clinical signs. It should also be born in mind that the morphological examination of the tonsils is an invasive method and can only be used to confirm the diagnosis after tonsillectomy, and not as a routine examination of patients with chronic tonsillitis. Morphological changes in palatine tonsils during chronic tonsillitis are represented by the proliferation of connective tissue in the thickness of the lymphoid tissue, the presence of necrotic foci, damage to the walls of capillary vessels, and disturbances in the crypt epithelium. In the case of the …

All biological processes in plant or animal organisms, including in the human body, are carried out in solutions. Therefore, the progress of sciences such as biology, medicine, etc., is closely related to the development of the doctrine of solutions. When dissolved, various chemical interactions occur between the components and due to Van der Waals force, etc. One of the methods for determining the ion molecular interaction is the study of the partial molar volume of electrolytes.

A Scoping Review To Inform Care Coordination Strategies For Youth With Traumatic Brain Injuries: Care Coordination Tools, Brandy Shook, Cara Palusak, Susan C. Davies, Jennifer P. Lundine

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Children with traumatic brain injury (TBI) report unmet needs several years after their injury and may require long-term care. However, this chronic health condition is often only treated and monitored in the short-term. Care for young persons with TBI often relies on parents to manage their child’s complex care network. Effective care coordination can close these gaps and facilitate continuity of care for children with TBI. The purpose of this scoping review was to develop a better understanding of tools that improve care coordination for Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN). This, in turn, can inform care for …

Commit messages are the atomic level of software documentation. They provide a natural language description of the code change and its purpose. Messages are critical for software maintenance and program comprehension. Unlike documenting feature updates and bug fixes, little is known about how developers document their refactoring activities. Specifically, developers can perform multiple refactoring operations, including moving methods, extracting classes, renaming attributes, for various reasons, such as improving software quality, managing technical debt, and removing defects. Yet, there is no systematic study that analyzes the extent to which the documentation of refactoring accurately describes the refactoring operations performed at the …
