Can We Build It? An Action Research Study Of Integrated Academics And Resilience, Shanda Jones
Can We Build It? An Action Research Study Of Integrated Academics And Resilience, Shanda Jones
Doctor of Education Dissertations
This study was an action research project seeking to gather evidence regarding the impact of integrating academic objectives and resiliency-building topics. As the focus on trauma and mental health increased, literature provided rich descriptions of how trauma may negatively impact students. Research presented findings indicating potential physical, mental, emotional, social, academic, and behavioral effects resulting from trauma. What was lacking were studies investigating the impact of implementing trauma-informed instructional strategies. In an effort to address gaps in the literature and improve professional practice, action research in a mixed methods approach was conducted with two research questions exploring the impact, if …

In this study, we used B16-F10 cells grown in the dorsal skinfold chamber (DSC) preparation that allowed us to gain optical access to the processes triggered by photodynamic therapy (PDT). Partial irradiation of a photosensitized melanoma triggered cell death in non-irradiated tumor cells. Multiphoton intravital microscopy with genetically encoded fluorescence indicators revealed that bystander cell death was mediated by paracrine signaling due to adenosine triphosphate (ATP) release from connexin (Cx) hemichannels (HCs). Intercellular calcium (Ca2+) waves propagated from irradiated to bystander cells promoting intracellular Ca2+ transfer from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to mitochondria and rapid activation of …

Assessing An Academic Readiness Model In A Community College Occupational Program, Scott A. Hauert, Robert L. Moore, Quinton Nottingham
STEMPS Faculty Publications
This study assessed a localized academic readiness model that measures academic skills relevant to an occupational program and the institutional context. Enrollment in the program’s mandatory gateway course is contingent upon establishing academic readiness either: (1) possess an associate-level or higher degree; (2) achieve placement test scores that permit enrollment in college-level English composition/critical reading; or (3) complete developmental education prerequisites to permit enrollment in college-level English composition/critical reading. Using the gateway course performance for 112 students, the study explored whether any of the model’s criterions are significantly related to success in the gateway course and whether there is any …

When Failure Is An Option: A Scoping Review Of Failure States In Game-Based Learning, F. Eamonn Powers, Robert L. Moore
STEMPS Faculty Publications
As interest in the use of games and gaming elements within learning environments grows, educators and designers may find it easier to account for winning than for losing and failure. This scoping review examines the role of failure and loss within game-based instructional interventions. Because of the varied methods and relatively small number of articles directly addressing the intersection between failure and loss within game-based instructional interventions, a scoping review was undertaken. This review included 14 peer-reviewed articles which explored a range of instructional contexts implementing failure state game mechanics. We identify several key takeaways that indicate how failure state …

Lights, Camera, Activity! A Systematic Review Of Research On Learner-Generated Videos, Bridgette Shade Epps, Tian Luo, Pauline S. Muljana
STEMPS Faculty Publications
Aim/Purpose
The current literature discusses the use and benefits of learner-generated videos (LGVs). However, it rarely addresses any correlation between the types of subjects that are best suited for using these videos or what techniques should accompany the use of LGVs.
Background
This systematic review synthesizes current literature to identify patterns and implications that develop from the use of LGVs so that their future use can be both consistent and effective. This paper also reviews the studies to establish the most consistent educational benefits that emerge from this activity.
Methodology
Employing the Preferred-Reporting of Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses …

The use of information and communication technology is very beneficial in the education sector because it can enhance the quality of education. However, the implementation of ICT in the education sector of developed and developing countries is a challenging task. This paper explains the comparative study of ICT issues in the education sector of developed and developing countries. In particular, we compare issues between Pakistan and high-tech countries. Our study reveals the fact that the education sector is facing numerous ICT problems that are based on culture, finance, management, infrastructure, lack of training, lack of equipment, teacher’s refusal, and ethical …

Equal Supreme Court Access For Military Personnel: An Overdue Reform, Eugene Fidell, Brenner M. Fissell, Phillip D. Cave
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
While one might think that every criminal defendant in the United States has the opportunity to eventually appeal their conviction to the Supreme Court, Congress has largely blocked the path of perhaps the most deserving category of defendants: military personnel convicted at courts-martial. This is because under the 1983 law granting certiorari jurisdiction over military cases, only court-martial convictions that are granted review by the nation’s highest military court may be appealed; those in which that court denies review are excluded from access to the Supreme Court.
In this Article, we argue that this jurisdictional limitation is both bad policy …

Exclusion Diffusion, Sarah L. Swan
Exclusion Diffusion, Sarah L. Swan
Emory Law Journal
Over the last few decades, municipalities and local governments have increasingly turned to banning and exclusion laws as a means of crime prevention. Banning and exclusion laws prohibit an individual from accessing a particular area or building for a prescribed period of time (often one to five years). Violations frequently trigger penalties of up to a year in jail. Because they are focused on crime prevention, no actual wrongdoing is necessary to trigger these bans: many bans are issued on the basis of mere suspicion. Banning and exclusion laws most typically forbid suspicious individuals from being in public spaces, like …
The Illusory Promise Of Free Enterprise: A Primer To Promoting Racially Diverse Entrepreneurship, Mirit Eyal-Cohen
The Illusory Promise Of Free Enterprise: A Primer To Promoting Racially Diverse Entrepreneurship, Mirit Eyal-Cohen
Emory Law Journal
The U.S. Census reports that Minority business ownership exceeds the corresponding racial makeup of U.S. demographics. Based on these figures, the principle of free enterprise seems to be acting on equal grounds. Could entrepreneurship be the social panacea for abolishing racial biases and the inequality gap? This Essay argues that this parity of Minority entrepreneurship is misleading. The Kauffman Foundation and Small Business Administration most recently reported that Black-owned firms represent only 7% of all U.S. businesses, Asian-owned firms represent only 4.3%, and Hispanic-owned firms represent only 10.6%. These businesses typically do not grow or expand, leaving the number of …

Advertising Injustices: Marketing Race And Credit In America, Jim Hawkins, Tiffany C. Penner
Emory Law Journal
Access to affordable credit played a central role in the Civil Rights Movement. But today, racial and ethnic minorities oversubscribe to high-cost lending products like payday loans and underuse more affordable credit options that traditional banks offer. These trends remain even when controlling for demographic variables like income, credit score, and education. While research verifies that these disparities exist, little work explains why. This Essay argues that advertising entrenches these racial inequities. Two empirical studies we conducted of advertising by banks and payday lenders suggest that payday lenders steer African Americans and Latinos to their products while banks market to …

Physician Disengagement And Spiritual Dissonance In Medical Students, Cindy Schmidt, Loes Nauta, Andrew Dang
Faculty and Staff Publications
Background and objectives:
Religion and spirituality constitute aspects of diversity that physicians must respect to provide patient-centered care. By seeing patients as individuals and integrating their religious and spiritual needs into their medical care, providers can deliver personalized health care. Their needs become even more critical for the frontline providers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most patients want their physicians to address their religious and spiritual needs when it comes to their health (eg, during isolation precautions). Despite increases in educational curricula about this integration, most physicians still do not provide this aspect of patient-centered care.
Methods:
In this observational study, …
Punishment Only For The Poor: The Unconstitutionality Of Pay-To-Vote Disenfranchisement Laws, Caitlin Croley
Punishment Only For The Poor: The Unconstitutionality Of Pay-To-Vote Disenfranchisement Laws, Caitlin Croley
Emory Law Journal
Felony disenfranchisement has remained a longstanding practice in the United States, utilized by nearly every state in the Union to punish those convicted of a felony with a bar from the franchise. However, when individuals attempt to re-obtain their voting rights, individual state restoration systems vary immensely, with some providing automatic restoration following incarceration and others requiring payment of legal financial obligations, such as fines or restitution. In the wake of a constitutional amendment to provide automatic restoration, the Florida legislature proposed a new system in SB 7066, aimed at curbing the effects of the amendment. Now signed into law, …

A Critical Analysis Of The Application Of Visual Programming To Increase Efficiency In Bim Object Metadata Delivery Workflows During The Delivery Phase Of An Asset, Kieran Lakhera O'Shea, Davitt Lamon
Reports
Uniclass 2015 data generally seems to be overlooked in favour of the more valuable COBie data when discussion begins about BIM model metadata and, at present, few studies are devoted to it and its delivery through automated methodologies. Classification is a key part of the BIM process – without the ability to distinguish one object from another a BIM model lacks the definition required for implementing downstream applications such as functional simulations, compliance checking and other automated technologies. The use of classification data is, of course, not the only way of identifying objects but it is currently the only standardised …
Mergers, Macs, And Covid-19, Brian Jm Quinn
Mergers, Macs, And Covid-19, Brian Jm Quinn
University of Richmond Law Review
The conventional wisdom is that MAE/MACs in merger agreements provide an opportunity for buyers to renegotiate merger agreements in the event of intervening adverse events. However, the experience following the COVID-19 outbreak suggests that the conventional wisdom is incorrect or at least overstated. In fact, MAE/MACs shift the risk of exogenous adverse events (like COVID-19) to buyers while leaving only the risks of adverse endogenous and semi-endogenous events with the seller. The consequence of this risk-shifting is to strictly limit the circumstances under which a buyer can credibly lean on a MAE/MAC to threaten to terminate a merger agreement and …
The Bivens "Special Factors" And Qualified Immunity: Duplicative Barriers To The Vindication Of Constitutional Rights, Amelia G. Collins
The Bivens "Special Factors" And Qualified Immunity: Duplicative Barriers To The Vindication Of Constitutional Rights, Amelia G. Collins
University of Richmond Law Review
Part I of this note traces the history of the Bivens cause of action and analyzes the original “special factors” that concerned the Supreme Court. Part I also outlines the purpose behind implying a Bivens cause of action for plaintiffs bringing constitutional claims. Part II includes the same analysis of the qualified immunity defense, both to its history and purpose. Part III demonstrates how the Supreme Court has incorporated the concerns addressed by qualified immunity into the “special factors” analysis, rather than acknowledging the mitigating nature of immunity defenses when examining if any “special factors” exist. Finally, Part IV argues …

Interplay Between Accounting And Prudential Regulation, Jeremy Bertomeu, Lucas Mahieux, Haresh Sapra
Interplay Between Accounting And Prudential Regulation, Jeremy Bertomeu, Lucas Mahieux, Haresh Sapra
Olin Business School Faculty Research
We develop a model in which accounting information and prudential regulation interact to affect banks’ incentives to originate loans. Prudential regulators impose capital requirements to prevent banks from taking excessive risk. However, regula- tors cannot commit to ex-ante efficient intervention and, instead, respond to ex-post accounting information. We show that capital requirements and accounting mea- surement are substitutes when considered separately. By contrast, when considered jointly, accounting measurement and capital requirements are complementary tools that affect the level and efficiency of credit decisions. Comparative statics link cap- ital requirements, quality of accounting information, and regulatory intervention to credit market conditions. …

Predicting The Mechanism And Products Of Co2 Capture By Amines In The Presence Of H2o, Zachary R. Lee
Predicting The Mechanism And Products Of Co2 Capture By Amines In The Presence Of H2o, Zachary R. Lee
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
An extensive correlated molecular orbital theory study of the reactions of CO2 with a range of substituted amines and H2O in the gas phase and aqueous solution was performed at the G3(MP2) level with a self-consistent reaction field approach. The G3(MP2) calculations were benchmarked at the CCSD(T)/CBS level for NH3 reactions. A catalytic NH3 reduces the energy barrier more than a catalytic H2O for the formation of H2NCOOH and H2CO3. In aqueous solution, the barriers to form both H2NCOOH and H2CO3 are reduced, with HCO3 − formation possible with one amine present and H2NCOO− formation possible only with two amines. …
A Space Of One’S Own: Houselot Size Among The Ancient Maya, Timothy Hare
A Space Of One’S Own: Houselot Size Among The Ancient Maya, Timothy Hare
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
This paper uses new data from lidar mapping to explore variation in the size of ancient Maya houselots. The amount of space available to households has important implications for subsistence, craft activities, social relations, and more. Comparisons of houselot data from three large cities (Coba, Mayapan, and Chunchucmil) and one rural area (southwestern Quintana Roo) show significant differences in houselot size across the four case studies. Site size has no effect when comparing across case studies although patterns of variation do emerge within the case studies. Of the major factors explored–wealth, household size, distance from site core, availability of open …
Focus Attracts Attachment, Kathryn Carlson, David Potter
Focus Attracts Attachment, Kathryn Carlson, David Potter
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
There is growing evidence that pitch accents as well as prosodic boundaries can affect syntactic attachment. But is this an effect of their perceptual salience (the Salience Hypothesis), or is it because accents mark the position of focus (the Focus Attraction Hypothesis)? A pair of auditory comprehension experiments shows that focus position, as indicated by preceding wh-questions instead of by pitch accents, affects attachment by drawing the ambiguous phrase to the focus. This supports the Focus Attraction Hypothesis (or a pragmatic version of salience) for both these results and previous results of accents on attachment. These experiments show that information …

Where Is The Strike Zone? Arguing For A Uniformly Narrow Interpretation Of The Prison Litigation Reform Act’S “Three Strikes” Rule, Samuel B. Reilly
Emory Law Journal
In 1996, at the height of the prison boom and as mass incarceration began to take shape, Congress passed the Prison Litigation Reform Act (PLRA). The PLRA aimed to reduce the overloaded federal court docket, and it targeted inmate litigation as its cause célèbre. The result was immediate, and it caused inmate litigation to plummet in federal courts. One of the provisions that facilitated and continues to facilitate the drastic decline in inmate filings is § 1915(g). Section 1915(g) of the PLRA—also known as the “three strikes” rule—prohibits in forma pauperis status to indigent inmates who have had three frivolous …
Ten Truths About Tax Havens: Inclusion And The "Liberia" Problem, Steven A. Dean, Attiya Waris
Ten Truths About Tax Havens: Inclusion And The "Liberia" Problem, Steven A. Dean, Attiya Waris
Emory Law Journal
There has been a decades-long effort to repair an increasingly fragile international tax system. One reason it has foundered has been what we identify as the “Liberia problem.” In 2000, the powerful Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development identified Liberia—but not Switzerland—as a tax haven and targeted it for sanctions. It did not go well. During the two decades since, everything has changed; yet seemingly from this lens of inclusion, nothing has changed at all. Awkwardly similar “blacklists” still target “Black” and “Brown” jurisdictions despite the fact that experts mean something quite different when they speak of the “scourge of …

Sperm Fate Is Promoted By The Mir-44 Microrna Family In The Caenorhabditis Elegans Hermaphrodite Germline, Katherine Ann Maniates, Benjamin S. Olson, Allison L. Abbott
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Posttranscriptional regulation of gene expression, typically effected by RNA-binding proteins, microRNAs (miRNAs), and translation initiation factors, is essential for normal germ cell function. Numerous miRNAs have been detected in the germline; however, the functions of specific miRNAs remain largely unknown. Functions of miRNAs have been difficult to determine as miRNAs often modestly repress target mRNAs and are suggested to sculpt or fine tune gene expression to allow for the robust expression of cell fates. In Caenorhabditis elegans hermaphrodites, cell fate decisions are made for germline sex determination during larval development when sperm are generated in a short window before the …

The honeyword system can be considered a mechanism for detecting passwords aiming to develop hashed password security via creating a password cracking easier to be detected. A lot of false passwords come with true passwords for forming the false and true passwords for all users. When a hacker logs in and uses a honeyword, a silent alarm trigger illustrates that the honeyword system could be compromised. A lot of mechanisms of honeyword generating have been submitted and all of them have a defect in the generation, a support shortage for every honeyword characteristic, and a slew of honeyword complications. Cybersecurity leaders must be able to use critical reading and thinking skills, exercise judgment when policies are not distinct and precise, and have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to tailor technical and planning data to diverse customers’ levels of understanding. Ninety-three percent of cybersecurity leaders do not report directly to the chief operating officer. While status differences influence interactions amid groups, attackers are smarter. With the aim of protecting organizations and reducing risk, knowledge about security must increase. Understanding voids are costly and increased breach chances are imminent. Burning questions exist. The View Of Samin People On The Moral Dilemma Of Wayang Story, Mikka Widha Nurrochsyam
The View Of Samin People On The Moral Dilemma Of Wayang Story, Mikka Widha Nurrochsyam
Antropologi Indonesia
Followers of Saminism, known as Sedulur Sikep, were fond of watching wayang performance. However, wayang performance had many war scenes that contradict the Samin’s moral teaching of nonviolence. This study seeks to answer the question rose from the apparent contradiction—how do the Samin people address the moral dilemma presented in wayang performance based on their own moral teachings? This study has three objectives: describing the wayang performance of the Samin community; analyzing the moral view of Samin people based on the scenes of moral dilemmas in wayang performance; and, proposing a strategy to develop wayang performance that is suitable to …
