Determination Of Pneumonia In X-Ray Chest Images By Using Convolutionalneural Network, Özlem Polat, Zümray Ölmez, Tamer Ölmez

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Pneumonia is one of the major diseases that cause a lot of deaths all over the world. Determining pneumonia from chest X-ray (CXR) images is an extremely difficult and important image processing problem. The discrimination of whether pneumonia is of bacterium or virus origin has also become more important during the pandemic. Automatic determination of the presence and origin of pneumonia is crucial for speeding up the treatment process and increasing the patient's survival rate. In this study, a convolutional neural network (CNN) framework is proposed for detection of pneumonia from CXR images. Two different binary CNNs and a triple …

Control Synthesis For Parametric Timed Automata Under Reachability, Ebru Aydin Göl Jan 2021

Control Synthesis For Parametric Timed Automata Under Reachability, Ebru Aydin Göl

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Timed automata is a fundamental modeling formalism for real-time systems. During the design of such real-time systems, often the system information is incomplete, and design choices can vary. These uncertainties can be integrated to the model via parameters and labelled transitions. Then, the design can be completed by tuning the parameters and restricting the transitions via controller synthesis. These problems, namely parameter synthesis and controller synthesis, are studied separately in the literature. Herein, these are combined to generate an automaton satisfying the given specification by both parameter tuning and controller synthesis, thus exploring all design choices. First, it is shown …

Determining Overfitting And Underfitting In Generative Adversarial Networksusing Fréchet Distance, Enes Eken Jan 2021

Determining Overfitting And Underfitting In Generative Adversarial Networksusing Fréchet Distance, Enes Eken

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) can be used in a wide range of applications where drawing samples from a data probability distribution without explicitly representing it is essential. Unlike the deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained for mapping an input to one of the multiple outputs, monitoring the overfitting and underfitting in GANs is not trivial since they are not classifying but generating a data. While training set and validation set accuracy give a direct sense of success in terms of overfitting and underfitting for CNNs during the training process, evaluating the GANs mainly depends on the visual inspection of the …

A Case Study On Player Selection And Team Formation In Football With Machinelearning, Di̇dem Abi̇di̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Machine learning has been widely used in different domains to extract information from raw data. Sports is one of the popular domains for researchers to work on recently. Although score prediction for matches is the most preferred application area for artificial intelligence, player selection, and team formation is also an application area worth working on. There are some studies in the literature about player selection and team formation which are examined in this study. The study has two important contributions: First one is to apply seven different machine learning algorithms on our dataset to find the best player combination for …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common congenital malformation group and is the leading cause of newborn mortality in developed countries. Most of the infants with CHD develop preoperative or postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI). Acute kidney injury may develop before the serum creatinine rise and oliguria. Urinary biomarkers such as kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), interleukin (IL)-18, and cystatin C may predict AKI in patients with critical CHD (CCHD) before the serum creatinine rise. In this study, we aimed to determine the AKI incidence among newborn patients with CCHD and investigate the predictivity of …

Adaptation Of Metaheuristic Algorithms To Improve Training Performance Of Aneszsl Model, Şi̇fa Özsari, Mehmet Serdar Güzel, Gazi̇ Erkan Bostanci, Ayhan Aydin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) is a recent promising learning approach that is similar to human vision systems. ZSL essentially allows machines to categorize objects without requiring labeled training data. In principle, ZSL proposes a novel recognition model by specifying merely the attributes of the category. Recently, several sophisticated approaches have been introduced to address the challenges regarding this problem. Embarrassingly simple approach to zeroshot learning (ESZSL) is one of the critical of those approaches that basically proposes a simple but efficient linear code solution. However, the performance of the ESZSL model mainly depends on parameter selection. Metaheuristic algorithms are considered as …

A New Approach: Semisupervised Ordinal Classification, Ferda Ünal, Derya Bi̇rant, Özlem Şeker

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Semisupervised learning is a type of machine learning technique that constructs a classifier by learning from a small collection of labeled samples and a large collection of unlabeled ones. Although some progress has been made in this research area, the existing semisupervised methods provide a nominal classification task. However, semisupervised learning for ordinal classification is yet to be explored. To bridge the gap, this study combines two concepts ?semisupervised learning? and "ordinal classification" for the categorical class labels for the first time and introduces a new concept of "semisupervised ordinal classification". This paper proposes a new algorithm for semisupervised learning …

Development And Validation Of A Scale To Explore Pre-Service Teachers’ Sense Of Preparedness, Engagement And Self-Efficacy In Classroom Teaching, Jessy Abraham, Tania Ferfolja, Aaron Sickel, Anne Power, Christina Curry, Denise Fraser, Karin Mackay Jan 2021

Development And Validation Of A Scale To Explore Pre-Service Teachers’ Sense Of Preparedness, Engagement And Self-Efficacy In Classroom Teaching, Jessy Abraham, Tania Ferfolja, Aaron Sickel, Anne Power, Christina Curry, Denise Fraser, Karin Mackay

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Raising the quality of initial teacher education can make an important contribution to raising the overall quality of the school system. In Australia, the National Framework for Professional Standards for Teaching is used as a common framework to set standards for the accreditation of teacher education programs. However, institution-wise assessments need to be carried out regularly to explore the quality of preparation pre-service teachers receive and to what extent they feel well prepared to enter teaching. This will enable teacher education programs to implement strategies to strengthen the link between university coursework and professional practice of pre service teachers. This …

Cell Phone Searches By Employers, Marc Chase Mcallister Jan 2021

Cell Phone Searches By Employers, Marc Chase Mcallister

Nebraska Law Review

This Article presents a framework for analyzing cell phone searches by employers. The framework proposed in this Article is structured around two primary variables: (1) whether the employee whose cell phone is searched works for a public or private employer, and (2) whether the cell phone is owned by the employer or employee. The starting point for developing a framework for cell phone searches is the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits “unreasonable searches and seizures” by state actors, including public employers. To be reasonable, a Fourth Amendment search or seizure must ordinarily be justified by a …

Responses were solicited from students, faculty, and staff. Of the 598 respondents, 77% were students, 13% were faculty, and 10% were staff. Pilots comprised 66% of the respondents. A Principal Component Analysis reduced the questions to two scales: Benefits and Inconvenience. Females, non-pilots, and older respondents reported greater benefits to wearing a FMand fewer inconveniences. A multiple regression …

Aviation English Assessment And Training, Robert Fowler, Elizabeth Mathews, Jena Lynch, Jennifer Roberts M.A. Jan 2021

Aviation English Assessment And Training, Robert Fowler, Elizabeth Mathews, Jena Lynch, Jennifer Roberts M.A.

Publications

Due to a significant global increase in demand for air travel, there has been a corresponding increase in demand for ab initio flight training. Thousands of international flight students seek admission to collegiate aviation programs in the United States and Canada every year. These international flight students come to the United States and Canada because flight training is nonexistent in their native countries. In fact, flight training in most of these countries is impossible due to airspace restrictions and onerous regulations. If there is flight training available in these countries, the cost is usually prohibitive compared to the cost in …

Benevolent Exclusion, Anna Offit Jan 2021

Benevolent Exclusion, Anna Offit

Faculty Publications

The American jury system holds the promise of bringing commonsense ideas about justice to the enforcement of the law. But its democratizing effect cannot be realized if a segment of the population faces systematic exclusion based on income or wealth. The problem of unequal access to jury service based on socio-economic disparities is a longstanding yet under-studied problem—and one which the uneven fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated. Like race- and sex-based jury discrimination during the peremptory challenge phase of jury selection, the routine dismissal of citizens who face economic hardship excludes not only people but also the diversity …

Autistic Personality Traits And Processing Of Ironic Language, Jaclyn Opie Jan 2021

Autistic Personality Traits And Processing Of Ironic Language, Jaclyn Opie

Honors Theses

Whereas typically developing adults tend to show processing differences for ironic versus literal language, recent research has demonstrated that adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder do not show a difference. Building on these findings, the present study examined whether similar effects would emerge in a sample of college students who were assessed on autistic personality traits. Through an eye tracking during reading experiment, participants read sentence contexts in which factors of emotional language, ironic versus literal language, and sentence perspective were manipulated. Results showed that participants who had a low degree of autistic traits somewhat replicated the two-stage processing model of …

Mdl Drano: Rule 23-Based Solutions To Mass Tort Buildup, Myriam E. Gilles, Gary Friedman

Articles

It has been taken as gospel, over the past quarter century, that class action procedures are unavailable in mass tort cases. This Article examines two distinct challenges to that assumption-one resting on Rule 23(c)(4)'s issue class procedure and the other on an innovation advanced by Francis McGovern, in whose honor this Article and symposium are dedicated.

Fraudulent Transfer As A Tort, David G. Carlson Jan 2021

Fraudulent Transfer As A Tort, David G. Carlson

Articles

Fraudulent transfer law has historically been an in rem right of a creditor to property fraudulently received by a third party. In a minority of states, courts have treated fraudulent transfers as creating an in personam liability of the transferring debtor, the recipient, and any other third party who "conspired" with the transferor to achieve the transfer. This Article examines the wisdom of this modern trend and finds it wanting. The United States Supreme Court in 1861 was correct: fraudulent transfers are not wrongs. They merely create in rem rights.

Knowledge Infused Policy Gradients With Upper Confidence Bound For Relational Bandits, Kaushik Roy, Qi Zhang, Manas Gaur, Amit Sheth

Publications

Contextual Bandits find important use cases in various real-life scenarios such as online advertising, recommendation systems, healthcare, etc. However, most of the algorithms use at feature vectors to represent context whereas, in the real world, there is a varying number of objects and relations among them to model in the context. For example, in a music recommendation system, the user context contains what music they listen to, which artists create this music, the artist albums, etc. Adding richer relational context representations also introduces a much larger context space making exploration-exploitation harder. To improve the efficiency of exploration-exploitation knowledge about the …

Police Prosecutions And Punitive Instincts, Kate Levine Jan 2021

Police Prosecutions And Punitive Instincts, Kate Levine

Articles

This Article makes two contributions to the fields of policing and criminal legal scholarship. First, it sounds a cautionary note about the use of individual prosecutions to remedy police brutality. It argues that the calls for ways to ease the path to more police prosecutions from legal scholars, reformers, and advocates who, at the same time, advocate for a dramatic reduction of the criminal legal system’s footprint, are deeply problematic. It shows that police prosecutions legitimize the criminal legal system while at the same time displaying the same racism and ineffectiveness that have been shown to pervade our prison-backed criminal …

The Pure Theory Of Law Is A Hole In The Ozone Layer, Peter Goodrich Jan 2021

The Pure Theory Of Law Is A Hole In The Ozone Layer, Peter Goodrich

Articles

The article critiques the Pure Theory of Law, arguing that it is inadequate and detached from the dynamic and creative aspects of legal practice. The author advocates for a reimagined legal theory that integrates critical perspectives, embodiment, and a connection to the natural world, emphasizing the need for adaptability and responsiveness over static dogma.

Stripped Of Funds, Stripped Of Rights: A Critique Of Guardianship As A Remedy For Elder Financial Harm, Rebekah Diller, Leslie Salzman Jan 2021

Stripped Of Funds, Stripped Of Rights: A Critique Of Guardianship As A Remedy For Elder Financial Harm, Rebekah Diller, Leslie Salzman

Articles

There is a growing consensus in the United States and abroad recognizing the right to “legal capacity”—the right to make legally binding decisions for oneself—as a basic human right. Despite this recognition, adult guardianship—the state court procedure by which a person is declared incapacitated and stripped of decision-making rights—remains a widely used tool, particularly for older adults who have suffered financial exploitation or loss. For this population, guardianship is considered an unpleasant yet necessary remedy to address their financial harms. But what if the cure does not really work as intended, while other, less intrusive means could prevent and redress …

New Federalism And Civil Rights Enforcement, Alexander A. Reinert, Joanna C. Schwartz, James E. Pfander

Articles

Calls for change to the infrastructure of civil rights enforcement have grown more insistent in the past several years, attracting support from a wide range of advocates, scholars, and federal, state, and local officials. Much of the attention has focused on federal-level reforms, including proposals to overrule Supreme Court doctrines that stop many civil rights lawsuits in their tracks. But state and local officials share responsibility for the enforcement of civil rights and have underappreciated powers to adopt reforms of their own. This Article evaluates a range of state and local interventions, including the adoption of state law causes of …

Explaining The Association Between Repetition Priming And Source Memory: No Evidence For A Contribution Of Recognition Or Fluency, Nicholas Lange, Christopher J. Berry

School of Psychology

In a conjoint memory task (measuring repetition priming, recognition memory, and source memory), items recognised as previously studied and receiving correct source decisions also tend to show a greater magnitude of the repetition priming effect. These associations have been explained as arising from a single memory system or signal, rather than multiple distinct ones. In the present work, we examine whether the association between priming and source memory can alternatively be explained as being driven by recognition or fluency. We first reproduced the basic priming-source association (Experiment 1). In Experiments 2 and 3, we found that the association persisted even …

Autonomic Management Of Service Level Agreements In Cloud Computing, Stefan Edwin Karl Frey Jan 2021

Autonomic Management Of Service Level Agreements In Cloud Computing, Stefan Edwin Karl Frey

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Autonomic Management of Service Level Agreements in Cloud Computing Cloud computing has been one of the major trending topics of recent years in the Information Technology (IT) industry. In contrary to the previous IT service delivery models, where all the services and resources were hosted locally, the idea behind cloud computing is to deliver computing resources or services on-demand over a network on an easy pay-per-use business model. This paradigm change included almost all areas of the modern IT landscape, be it the storage and sharing of data for example with services like Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive or …
