Sex- And Age - Specific Migratory Strategies Of Blue Whales In The Northeast Pacific, Christina Blevins Dec 2021

Sex- And Age - Specific Migratory Strategies Of Blue Whales In The Northeast Pacific, Christina Blevins

Biology ETDs

Sequential subsampling of blue whale baleen plates can yield information of individual migratory plasticity of this endangered species in the northeast Pacific Ocean. We measured δ13C and δ15N isotope values along baleen from thirteen whales of different age and sex. Results showed sex/age-specific migratory strategies. Adult females exhibited relatively stable cyclical movements between temperate and subtropical regions. Adult males exhibited two strategies, most remained within temperate latitudes, whereas two migrated to subtropical latitudes. Movement patterns in juveniles were erratic. These patterns are potentially driven by energetic requirements of females, intraspecific competitions among adult males, and inexperience in locating prey in …

Importance Of Optometric Practices, Nikhita Jacob Dec 2021

Importance Of Optometric Practices, Nikhita Jacob

Honors Projects

This research examines what effect education has on people’s decision-making. More specifically, whether better education leads to better decisions and health outcomes, and why that is important for optometry. Every decision someone makes depends on some type of information, whether it is heard, read about, watched, or experienced. The more information someone has, the more confident someone can be in the decisions they make. Access to information and to education, whether it is through school, libraries, or news channels, is not always equal. It is important that people are informed about subjects as important as their health, by those who …

Shaping The Mind Through Music- A Family Challenge Of The 21st Century, Elisa H. Meyer

Honors Projects

This research provides reasoning for the importance of music education in America's schools. Music education is an integral ingredient in the cognitive development of the child- benefiting long term functions such as speech and language skills, memory, creativity, critical thinking, and general intelligence. Music allows a child to develop into their whole selves, encouraging the growth of their fullest potential. Various educational philosophies, such as the Rudolf Steiner philosophy and the Suzuki method describe the significance of this and outline substancial ways in which this integration is made possible. These philosophies are defined and discussed within this paper. Finally, insight …

Effect Of Laplace-Domain Theodorsen Function On The Aeroelasticity Of Typical Sections, Steve Park Dec 2021

Effect Of Laplace-Domain Theodorsen Function On The Aeroelasticity Of Typical Sections, Steve Park

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

In the analysis of flutter of fixed-wing aircraft, it is common to use the "p-k" method in which one iterates on the reduced frequency of the Theordorsen aerodynamic theory based on the Imaginary part of the eigenvalue. However, this process only is correct when the real part of the eigenvalue is zero (i.e., at the stability boundary) because Theodorsen assumes simple harmonic motion. In this paper, we investigate the accuracy of this method for eigenvalues away from the stability bound by replacing the Theodorsen function C(k) with its aerodynamic counterpart for growing or decaying motion. We then study …

Efficacy Of Moderate Exercise Training On Heart Rate Variability And Left Ventricular Remodeling After Myocardial Infarction, Mai H. Hassan, Mohamad El Bordy Dec 2021

Efficacy Of Moderate Exercise Training On Heart Rate Variability And Left Ventricular Remodeling After Myocardial Infarction, Mai H. Hassan, Mohamad El Bordy

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research

Background After myocardial infarction (MI), elevated sympathetic activity and/or reduced parasympathetic activity are observed. As a result, these patients have a decreased heart rate variability (HRV), which has been linked to an elevated risk of adverse effects and death. Following MI, the remodeling of the left ventricle (LV) is a complex and multifactorial mechanism, with therapeutic and prognostic consequences. Medications that reduced LV improved survival and standard of living. Aim We aimed to evaluate the effect of continuous exercise remodeling training on HRV, function capacity [6-min walk test (6MWT)], and LV remodeling in patients who had experienced MI. Patients and …
