Single-Rail Adiabatic Logic For Energy-Efficient And Cpa-Resistant Cryptographic Circuit In Low-Frequency Medical Devices, Amit Degada, Himanshu Thapliyal Dec 2021

Single-Rail Adiabatic Logic For Energy-Efficient And Cpa-Resistant Cryptographic Circuit In Low-Frequency Medical Devices, Amit Degada, Himanshu Thapliyal

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

Designing energy-efficient and secure cryptographic circuits in low-frequency medical devices are challenging due to low-energy requirements. Also, the conventional CMOS logic-based cryptographic circuits solutions in medical devices can be vulnerable to side-channel attacks (e.g. correlation power analysis (CPA)). In this article, we explored single-rail Clocked CMOS Adiabatic Logic (CCAL) to design an energy-efficient and secure cryptographic circuit for low-frequency medical devices. The performance of the CCAL logic-based circuits was checked with a power clock generator (2N2P-PCG) integrated into the design for the frequency range of 50 kHz to 250 kHz. The CCAL logic gates show an average of approximately 48% …

Disinheritance, Discrimination, And The Case For Including Adult Independent Children In Dependants’ Relief Schemes: Lawen Estate V Nova Scotia, Jane Thomson Dec 2021

Disinheritance, Discrimination, And The Case For Including Adult Independent Children In Dependants’ Relief Schemes: Lawen Estate V Nova Scotia, Jane Thomson

Dalhousie Law Journal

In 2019 a Superior Court in Nova Scotia excluded adult independent children as “Dependants” under Nova Scotia’s Testator’s Family Maintenance Act. The decision was based on a finding that testamentary autonomy is a constitutional right protected by s. 7 of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This article explains why the constitutional decision in Lawen Estate v Nova Scotia was incorrect. It also demonstrates why the inclusion of adult independent children in dependants’ relief schemes is not only benign in most instances, but may play a role in preventing the perpetuation of discrimination in the private law. This article also …

The Transfer Of Motor Skill Practice To The Game: A Review Of Transfer Of Learning Theory And Applications, Silver Dawson

Honors Theses

Abstract

Transfer of learning from practice to competition is a prevalent issue that needs the assistance of professionals in motor behavior and coaching education. This review provides a theoretical and applied overview of transfer of learning and practice design. Lacking the appropriate knowledge and skillset to create an effective practice design does not have to be common for coaches. Athletes and coaches need more evidence of transfer of learning behind their practice design and assessment. This research review gives support to theories and concepts like Fitts and Posner's stages of learning, specificity of learning, schema theory, verbal cues augmented feedback, …

This paper presents a novel method for automatic segmentation of dental X-ray images into single tooth sections and for placing every segmented tooth onto a precise corresponding position table. Moreover, the proposed method automatically determines the tooth’s position in a panoramic X-ray film. The image-processing step incorporates a variety of image-enhancement techniques, including sharpening, histogram equalization, and flat-field correction. Moreover, image processing was implemented iteratively to achieve higher pixel value contrast between the teeth and cavity. The next image-enhancement step is aimed at detecting the teeth cavity and involves determining the segment and points separating the upper and lower jaw, …

Probing Secondary Coordination Sphere Interactions Within Porphyrin-Cored Polymer Nanoparticles, Brian F. Patenaude, Erik B. Berda, Samuel Pazincni

New Hampshire EPSCoR

A suite of zinc porphyrin-cored random coil polymers and polymeric nanoparticles with varying degrees of potential hydrogen bonding character and steric bulk were synthesized and characterized to study secondary coordination sphere interactions. The reaction of cyanide with N,N-dimethylformamide in the presence of porphyrin-cored polymeric nanoparticles was monitored via UV-Vis spectroscopy. It is shown that the zinc porphyrin-cored polymers and nanoparticles catalyzed the reaction of cyanide with N,N-dimethylformamide with the highest reaction rates occurring with polymeric nanoparticles with a greater number of potential hydrogen bond donors and greater steric bulk.

Change in the dynamics of single-stranded DNA or RNA probes tethered to an Au electrode on immunospecific binding to the analyte is a versatile approach to quantify a variety of molecules, such as heavy metal ions, pesticides, proteins, and nucleic acids (NAs). A widely studied approach is the electrochemical beacon method where the redox of a dye attached to the probe decreases as its proximity to the underlying electrode changes on binding. The limit of quantification (LOQ) defined by the semilog dependence of the signal on target concentration is in the picomolar range. Here, a method was studied where, by …

Mass spectrometry-based footprinting can probe higher order structure of soluble proteins in their native states and serve as a complement to high-resolution approaches. Traditional footprinting approaches, however, are hampered for integral membrane proteins because their transmembrane regions are not accessible to solvent, and they contain hydrophobic residues that are generally unreactive with most chemical reagents. To address this limitation, we bond photocatalytic titanium dioxide (TiO

As every jurist knows, there is a vast body of law about Christmas. For instance, every municipal bureaucrat knows that it’s quite alright to display the Holy Child en crèche so long as He’s adequately trivialized by “Santa’s sleigh; a live 40–foot Christmas tree strung with lights; statues of carolers in old-fashioned dress; candy-striped poles; a ‘talking’ wishing well; a large banner proclaiming ‘SEASONS GREETINGS’; a miniature ‘village’ with several houses and a church; and various ‘cut-out’ figures, including those of a clown, a dancing elephant, a robot, and a teddy bear.” There are cases about dangerous Christmas ornaments, whether …

Community College Nursing Students' Experience Of Repeating A Course After Academic Failure, Lisa S. Lewis Dec 2021

Community College Nursing Students' Experience Of Repeating A Course After Academic Failure, Lisa S. Lewis

Dissertations

This narrative inquiry study looked at community college nursing student repeaters, those who have failed a required nursing course and then gone on to repeat the course. Nursing student repeaters are a population at especially high risk for attrition, and about whom little is known. The community college setting is an important site of nursing education, where approximately half of new nurses do their pre-licensure schooling and where attrition is a particular problem. Fourteen nursing student repeaters were interviewed and eleven of them provided a letter of advice to a future nursing student repeater. While each participant had a unique …

Inhibition Of Nadph Oxidase Blocks Netosis And Reduces Thrombosis In Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia, Halina H L Leung, Jose Perdomo, Zohra Ahmadi, Feng Yan, Steven E. Mckenzie, Beng H Chong

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is associated with severe and potentially lethal thrombotic complications. NETosis was recently shown to be an important driver of thrombosis in HIT. We investigated the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase 2 (NOX2) and their contributions to thrombus development in HIT. We showed that neutrophil activation by HIT immune complexes induced ROS-dependent NETosis. Analysis of thrombi formed in a microfluidics system showed ROS production in both platelets and neutrophils, and abundant neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and ROS distributed throughout the clot. Neutrophil-targeted ROS inhibition was sufficient to block HIT-induced NETosis …

Somatic mutations are rare in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (pAML), indicating that alternate strategies are needed to identify targetable dependencies. We performed the first enhancer mapping of pAML in 22 patient samples. Generally, pAML samples were distinct from adult AML samples, and MLL (KMT2A)-rearranged samples were also distinct from non-KMT2A-rearranged samples. Focusing specifically on superenhancers (SEs), we identified SEs associated with many known leukemia regulators. The retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARA) gene was differentially regulated in our cohort, and a RARA-associated SE was detected in 64% of the study cohort across all cytogenetic and molecular subtypes tested. RARA SE+ pAML …

Murders At Kiss-Me-Quick: The Underside Of International Affairs, Jerrell H. Shofner

Florida Historical Quarterly

The last weekend of November 1932 was exceptionally cold and unexceptionally dull at Cedar Key until flames began shooting from the city jail about four o’clock on Monday morning. The fire was the final act of one of the most senseless and brutal murders ever committed by a Florida law enforcement official and the beginning of an international dispute which enabled Mussolini’s fascist government to chastise the United States for its violation of civil rights and human decency.
