Understanding The Impact Of Encrypted Dns On Internet Censorship, Lin Jin, Shuai Hao, Haining Wang, Chase Cotton Jan 2021

Understanding The Impact Of Encrypted Dns On Internet Censorship, Lin Jin, Shuai Hao, Haining Wang, Chase Cotton

Computer Science Faculty Publications

DNS traffic is transmitted in plaintext, resulting in privacy leakage. To combat this problem, secure protocols have been used to encrypt DNS messages. Existing studies have investigated the performance overhead and privacy benefits of encrypted DNS communications, yet little has been done from the perspective of censorship. In this paper, we study the impact of the encrypted DNS on Internet censorship in two aspects. On one hand, we explore the severity of DNS manipulation, which could be leveraged for Internet censorship, given the use of encrypted DNS resolvers. In particular, we perform 7.4 million DNS lookup measurements on 3,813 DoT …

Parallel Anisotropic Unstructured Grid Adaptation, Christos Tsolakis, Nikos Chrisochoides, Michael A. Park, Adrien Loseille, Todd Michal

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has become critical to the design and analysis of aerospace vehicles. Parallel grid adaptation that resolves multiple scales with anisotropy is identified as one of the challenges in the CFD Vision 2030 Study to increase the capacity and capability of CFD simulation. The study also cautions that computer architectures are undergoing a radical change, and dramatic increases in algorithm concurrency will be required to exploit full performance. This paper reviews four different methods to parallel anisotropic grid adaptation. They cover both ends of the spectrum: 1) using existing state-of-the-art software optimized for a single core and …

Neural Networks And Sensitivity Analysis For Detection And Interpretation Of Structural Damage, Dayakar Naik Lavadiya Jan 2021

Neural Networks And Sensitivity Analysis For Detection And Interpretation Of Structural Damage, Dayakar Naik Lavadiya

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Computer vision (CV)-based approaches have gained a lot of attention in recent years for objective identification of damages both at structural and material scales. In this dissertation, the metallurgical phases and the two important modes of damage in structural steel, namely fracture and corrosion, are considered. Use of CV techniques for metallurgical phase identification and fracture type identification in steel microstructure is minimal and rely on pixel intensity information. When distinct phases or fracture types possess similar pixel intensities, predictions may be erroneous. In this dissertation, various texture recognition algorithms based on an ensemble of machine learning algorithms are proposed …

Mechanistic Investigation Of Catalytic Chlorite Decomposition By Chlorite Dismutase, Zachary Geeraerts Jan 2021

Mechanistic Investigation Of Catalytic Chlorite Decomposition By Chlorite Dismutase, Zachary Geeraerts

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Water purification processes often involve chlorine-based disinfectants which consequently leads to formation of chloro oxyanions (ClOx−), potent water-soluble oxidizing agents. These chlorine species are kinetically stable in water which allows them to persist and buildup to hazardous concentrations. Chlorite (ClO2−), a common contaminant in water purification processes, has been labeled as a top ten major water contaminant by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Therefore, there is pressing interest in developing methods for removal of ClOx− species from water. Chlorite dismutases are heme b dependent enzymes that catalyze the unimolecular decomposition of ClO2− into chloride (Cl−) and molecular oxygen (O2) …

A Duty Of Loyalty For Privacy Law, Neil M. Richards, Woodrow Hartzog Jan 2021

A Duty Of Loyalty For Privacy Law, Neil M. Richards, Woodrow Hartzog

Faculty Scholarship

Data privacy law fails to stop companies from engaging in self-serving, opportunistic behavior at the expense of those who trust them with their data. This is a problem. Modern tech companies are so entrenched in our lives and have so much control over what we see and click that the self-dealing exploitation of people has become a major element of the internet’s business model.

Academics and policymakers have recently proposed a possible solution: require those entrusted with people’s data and online experiences to be loyal to those who trust them. But many have concerns about a duty of loyalty. What, …

Copyright And Parody: Touring The Certainties Of Intellectual Property And Restitution, Wendy J. Gordon Jan 2021

Copyright And Parody: Touring The Certainties Of Intellectual Property And Restitution, Wendy J. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

The essay that follows examines the boundary between two sets of rules. The first set arises under the law of Restitution, particularly the rule that volunteers ordinarily need not be rewarded. (Another way to state this same Restitution rule is to say that the retention of benefit voluntarily conferred is ordinarily not "unjust enrichment".) The second set of rules are those of Intellectual Property law, which creates property in a special kind of volunteer. My argument is simply that the law of Restitution leads almost directly to the law of Intellectual Property, though the two areas are premised on diametrically …
