Spectatorial Sisterhood: Relasi Sosial Pengguna Second Account Di Instagram, Amelia Rugun Sirait

Antropologi Indonesia

Instagram is a popular image based social media platform. Usually, users have their own accounts for their personal profile to be viewed publicly. As Instagram features develop, users may have more than one account. Accounts that are specific to certain circle of friends are called “second accounts” and treated as private accounts used to express and relate through images. In this social media ethnography, seven subjects shared their experiences through uploaded images, videos and texts. They have the awareness to avoid relationships and gazes in their main account by building a different subjectivity in their second account. Contents on their …

From Sanitation To Soybeans: Kitchen Hygiene And Nutritional Nationalism In Republican China, 1911–1945, Sarah Xia Yu

Asia Pacific Perspectives

This article investigates evolving expectations for Chinese individuals to clean, cook, eat, and nourish in their private kitchens, and how certain diseases became urgent touchstones for the change in public health priorities. Reformists promoted personal responsibility and popular interest in kitchen and dietary hygiene, which increased as Chinese audiences became exposed to globally- circulating ideas of sanitation and nutrition in individual homes. Furthermore, this occurred in tandem with increased institutionalized government developments for improved infrastructure. This article also highlights Chinese participation in the transnational dietary science movement of the early twentieth century, as reformists developed methods for beriberi and tuberculosis …

Demystifying Remote Research In Anthropology And Area Studies, Kaitlyn Ugoretz Jan 2021

Demystifying Remote Research In Anthropology And Area Studies, Kaitlyn Ugoretz

Asia Pacific Perspectives

Physically cut off from locations and archives central to our work due to restrictions in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, area studies scholars must reimagine what constitutes rigorous and responsible research in their respective disciplines. The practice of remote research, however, is not a new one. Digital ethnography, an admittedly niche subdiscipline of anthropology, has long been grappling with the issues of how to value and conduct remote research. This essay explores a number of misconceptions regarding digital and remote research that may aid in contextualizing and coming to terms with the anxieties the broader scholarly community faces. I …

An Exploration Of Aphasia Therapy Dosage In The First Six Months Of Stroke Recovery, Emily Brogan, Natalie Ciccone, Erin Godecke

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Aphasia research uses the length of time within rehabilitation sessions as the main measure of dosage. Few papers detail therapeutic ingredients or outline the number of times these were delivered over the treatment period. The present observational study identified therapeutic ingredients in the Very Early Rehabiltiation in SpEech (VERSE) trial and explored the dosage provided using a model of cumulative intervention intensity (CII). Therapists video recorded one therapy session per week and 53 (12%) randomly selected therapy videos were analysed. The videos were coded for number of error productions, self-corrections and type and frequency of therapist cueing. The Western Aphasia …

Chinese Nationalism And The “Gray Zone”: Case Analyses Of Public Opinion And Prc Maritime Policy, Andrew Chubb Jan 2021

Chinese Nationalism And The “Gray Zone”: Case Analyses Of Public Opinion And Prc Maritime Policy, Andrew Chubb

CMSI Red Books

This volume examines the role of popular nationalism in China’s maritime conduct. Analysis of nine case studies of assertive but ostensibly nonmilitary actions by which the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has advanced its position in the South and East China Seas in recent years reveals little compelling evidence of popular sentiment driving decision-making. While some regard for public opinion demonstrably shapes Beijing’s propaganda strategies on maritime issues, and sometimes its diplomatic practices as well, the imperative for Chinese leaders to satisfy popular nationalism is at most a contributing factor to policy choices they undertake largely on the basis of …

A Risk Framework For The Delivery Of Long-Term Performance Through The Large-Scale Energy Focused Retrofit Of Housing, Seamus Harrington, Mark Mulville Dr

Conference papers

The 2019 Climate Action Plan (Ireland) seeks to retrofit approximately 500,000 existing homes to attain a B2 Building Energy Rating by 2030. Although not without merit, this presents a number of risks. The authors, through a review of relevant literature and a survey of leading experts in the field of domestic retrofit, set out to explore if and how the implementation, execution, and performance of retrofit strategies that utilise a uniform approach to the retrofit of the decidedly non-uniform existing dwelling stock could create un-intended consequences. It is demonstrated how issues related to indoor air quality, comfort and overheating may …

The Role Of The Community And Voluntary Sector In Identifying Vulnerabilities To Climate Change In Coastal Areas And Implementing Climate Adaptation Responses, Paul Lawlor Jan 2021

The Role Of The Community And Voluntary Sector In Identifying Vulnerabilities To Climate Change In Coastal Areas And Implementing Climate Adaptation Responses, Paul Lawlor

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

The National Adaptation Framework aims to reduce Ireland’s vulnerability to climate change by establishing climate adaptation considerations as a priority at local, regional and national level. With coastal areas and habitats particularly susceptible to negative climate change effects, it is necessary to build resilience in these areas by devising coastal adaptation responses in collaboration with coastal communities. Policies and structures have also been put in place to create an enabling environment which facilitates community participation. However, the extent of community engagement and its current role in formulating and implementing coastal adaptation responses are unclear. This paper assesses the effectiveness of …

Relationship Between Participation And Social Inclusion, Louis Nwachi Jan 2021

Relationship Between Participation And Social Inclusion, Louis Nwachi

Articles

Studies show that within most countries, there are generally many different socio-cultural, ethnic and religious groups and this diversity inevitably creates a level of inter-group tension, with income disparities, cultural differences, and intergroup segregation leading in turn to social exclusion. This paper sets out to develop a conceptual framework to examine the relationship between that participation and the social inclusion outcomes in the plan-making process. It addresses how social inclusion can relate to the plan-making process culturally, politically and institutionally, economically and socially with high level participation. In doing this, it adopts a case study approach using the Metropolitan Area …

A New Epoch For Community Renewable Energy Co-Operatives In Ireland? An Exploration Of The Factors Influencing Their Development, Gerard Doyle

Articles

The paper outlines the capacities required for community groups to successfully establish and maintain renewable energy co-operatives in Ireland. The paper finds that community groups that successfully establish renewable energy co-operatives must possess high levels of resilience, have access to technical expertise, and have appropriate finance. It also highlights how it is crucial that at least one member of each renewable energy co-operative engages with state agencies and the community. Pringle’s (2015) theoretical framework applied in this paper focuses on the capacities required for the successful implementation of community renewable energy projects (which include community renewable energy co-operatives) in rural …

You Can't Lose A Game If You Don't Play The Game: Exploring The Ethics Of Gamification In Education, Dympna O'Sullivan, Ioannis Stavrakakis, Damian Gordon, Andrea Curley, Brendan Tierney, Emma Murphy, Michael Collins, Anna Becevel Jan 2021

You Can't Lose A Game If You Don't Play The Game: Exploring The Ethics Of Gamification In Education, Dympna O'Sullivan, Ioannis Stavrakakis, Damian Gordon, Andrea Curley, Brendan Tierney, Emma Murphy, Michael Collins, Anna Becevel

Articles

Gamification has been hailed as a meaningful solution to the perennial challenge of sustaining student attention in class. It uses facets of gameplay in an educational context, including things such as points, leaderboards and badges. These are clearly efforts to make the student experience more entertaining and engaging, but nonetheless, they are also clearly digital nudges and attempts to change the students’ behaviours and attitudes to a specific set of concepts, and in which case they must, and should, be subject to the same ethical scrutiny as any other form of persuasion technique, as they may be unintentionally eroding the …

Sustainable International Engagement Using A Partner Co-Hosted Teaching Model, Brian Gillespie, Paul Doyle, Zy Jiang, Darryl Humble Jan 2021

Sustainable International Engagement Using A Partner Co-Hosted Teaching Model, Brian Gillespie, Paul Doyle, Zy Jiang, Darryl Humble

Conference Papers

Internationalisation is a significant activity of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) worldwide and is typically embedded within the aims, ambitions, vision, and strategy of the institution. It incorporates the policies and procedures required to facilitate participation within a global academic environment, and is often considered to be a transformative process that impacts practices in teaching and learning, research, and administration. With formal protocols to establish partnerships, such as memoranda of understanding and articulation agreements, the business of formally creating international partnerships is well defined. However, the motivations, corresponding metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) of successful partnerships are not as well …

"I Didn't Feel Doctoral Worthy": Motivating Factors For Black Female, First-Generation Doctoral Students, Margaret Cole Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study examines the motivating factors for Black female, first-generation doctoral students. The critical problem I found was that little is known how Black female doctoral students persevere to completing their doctoral degrees. Therefore, this study sought to identify factors that influence first-generation Black females to pursue and complete a doctorate. I approached the study through the theoretical lens of Womanism. Womanism is defined as a theory based on Black womens lives experiences, works to change negative images of Black women, and restores a balance to the community through a lens of spirituality. In chapter 2, I identified the critical …

Switching Between The L1 And L2: Teachers Corrective Feedback And Learner Uptake, Md Nesar Uddin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Over the years, an interest in switching between the L1 and L2 in L2 classroom instruction has grown in SLA research in parallel with the uptick in corrective feedback (CF) research. Separate studies on CF (e.g., Shirani, 2019; Bryfonski & Ma, 2020) and L1 use (e.g., Iyitoglu, 2016) have found that CF and language switching promote L2 learning, with L1 use facilitating the accomplishment of cognitively demanding tasks. However, research has not considered how switching between languages in the provision of CF impacts learning opportunities. This dissertation combined CF and language switching and explored the role of CF practices in …
