Teaching Applied Exercise Physiology Using A Prototype Energy Expenditure Measurement Device, James W. Navalta, Dustin W. Davis, Bryson Carrier, Jacquelyn V.L Sertic, Peyton Cater
Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Research
Undergraduate and graduate students in courses designed to introduce research techniques in exercise physiology were provided the novel opportunity through Project-based Learning (PBL) to utilize a prototype device to measure energy expenditure (EE). This report summarizes how EE measurements were incorporated via PBL into course-required experiments and determined perceived understanding of exercise and metabolism. Undergraduate experiments included measurement of EE following high intensity cycling preceded by a motivating yell, and EE after upper-body and lower-body exercise performed at simulated altitude. Graduate experiments included evaluation of the EE cost of skipping, and EE during longboard skateboarding. Undergraduate students perceived greater increases …

Notas Para Una Teoría Glotopolítica, José Del Valle
Publications and Research
This article discusses the theoretical underpinnings of glottopolitical studies, defined as an intellectual perspective. Such …

Grassland Use And Plant Diversity In Grazed Ecosystems, V. A. Deregibus, E. J. Jacobo, O. E. Ansin
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Earth biomes are being deconstructed, through unprecedented rates of species disappearance or invasion (McCann 2000). This, added to the threat of global environmental change and changes in values of a developed society, caused that biodiversity became a topic that has captured the attention of the public as well as the scientific community. Such concern on the importance of biodiversity is based in four basic reasons clearly described by West (1993): (i) morality, that aims for the protection of species; (ii) aesthetics, as people desire to see and appreciate the living parts of nature; (iii) economics and, (iv) the array …
Core Collection Approaches And Genetic Diversity In Flemingia Macrophylla, R. Schultze‐Kraft, M. Peters
Core Collection Approaches And Genetic Diversity In Flemingia Macrophylla, R. Schultze‐Kraft, M. Peters
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Core collections are a useful means to optimise the management, including conservation, of forage germplasm collections. Such optimisation is warranted in view of increasingly limited research resources. As there are several potential options to create core collections, a project is presented in which three approaches are compared: (i) based on germplasm origin information; (ii) genetic diversity assessment by agronomic characterisation/evaluation; and (iii) DNA markers. As example-species for the project, the tropical legume shrub Flemingia macrophylla is selected because of its particular multiple-use potential in smallholder production systems. An important diversity descriptor is the content of tannins influencing feed and litter …

Environmental Impacts Of Seawater Desalination On The Marine Environment In The Kingdom Of Bahrain, Waleed Al-Zubari, Alaa Elsadek, Mohamed Khadim
Emirates Journal for Engineering Research
The main water planning and management challenge facing Bahrain is in how to balance water availability and water use on a long-term basis in the face of increasing demands under the least economic and environmental costs and without endangering socio-economic development. To meet escalating municipal water demands desalination is becoming inevitable, which is associated with substantial financial, economic, and environmental costs. In this research, the environmental impact of seawater desalination on the surrounding marine environment is assessed at a government-owned MSF desalination plant (Sitra Power and Water Station (SPWS)). The assessment used a number of environmental indicators, namely temperature and …

A quantitative assessment of the acoustic source field produced by a laboratory-scale heated jet with a gas dynamic Mach number of 1.55 and an acoustic Mach number of 2.41 is performed using arrays of microphones that are traversed across the axial and radial plane of the jet's acoustic field. The nozzle contour comprises a method of characteristics shape so that shock-related noise is minimal and the dominant sound production mechanism is from Mach waves. The spatial topography of the overall sound pressure level is shown to be dominated by a distinct lobe residing on the principal acoustic emission path, which …

Novel Biomarkers Of Ciliary Extracellular Vesicles Interact With Ciliopathy And Alzheimer’S Associated Proteins, Ashraf M. Mohieldin, Amal Alachkar, John R. Yates Iii, Surya M. Nauli
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Ciliary extracellular vesicles (ciEVs), released from primary cilia, contain functional proteins that play an important role in cilia structure and functions. We have recently shown that ciEVs and cytosolic extracellular vesicles (cyEVs) have unique and distinct biomarkers. While ciEV biomarkers have shown some interactions with known ciliary proteins, little is known about the interaction of ciEV proteins with proteins involved in ciliopathy and neurodegenerative disorders. Here, we reveal for the first time the protein-protein interaction (PPI) between the top five ciEVs biomarkers with ciliopathy and Alzheimer disease (AD) proteins. These results support the growing evidence of the critical physiological roles …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Due to information explosion and overload of information, libraries are unable to procure or subscribe to the enormous published information. Libraries are finding it difficult to supply the most deemed reading materials such as reference, rare, career advancement, scholarly publications, government publications, and research related reading materials. Thus, to overcome this existing problem, now the libraries, especially university libraries are starting to digitize the value added reading materials and have made them available through a digital library, gateways, portals, archives, repositories, and consortium electronic platforms. In this context, the present study evaluates the awareness and utilization of digitized resources by …

Development Of Job Satisfaction Scale For Female Library Professionals: Case Study, Punam Chauhan, Aditya Tripathi, Mohd Shoaib Ansari
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
It has been observed that there are no standard scales for measuring the job satisfaction of female library professionals. A scale would prove to be an excellent tool for developing policies for female library professionals. A questionnaire is prepared, which is further tested for reliability and validity, considered a standard scale. A survey method is used to collect the data for this purpose. The study suggests that job satisfaction variables are not unidirectional in their effect. The job itself can be a source of both satisfaction and dissatisfaction. The scale has good internal consistency. The scale has good internal consistency …

The Effect Of Parental Thermal Environment On Maternal Investment And Offspring Performance, Bianca Allegra Parodi
The Plymouth Student Scientist
As heat wave phenomena and thermal variance events increase in frequency and intensity, it is important to understand how the effect of exposure to constant elevated temperatures on fitness differs from the one of thermal fluctuations. This study aims to investigate how parental thermal environment affects maternal fitness measured as maternal investment and offspring performance. A wild population of the amphipod Gammarus chevreuxi was exposed to constant (15, 20 and 25 °C) or fluctuating (variable between 15 and 25 °C) thermal regimes and allowed to mate. Immediately after fertilization, mothers carrying eggs were transferred to common garden conditions (15 °C), …
