In a contact center, when a caller elects to speak to an agent the call will be routed (based on the language that the caller chose) to an agent who can speak the language that was selected by the caller. A global company with operations or offices in many different countries faces the challenge of communicating in multiple languages, something that is a key to providing excellent customer service. In particular, it can be challenging for a company to achieve such a capability when they simply cannot hire a customer support agent for every possible language. To address such challenges, …

Trouble With Names: Commercial Speech And A New Approach To Food Product Label Regulation, William Cusack
Trouble With Names: Commercial Speech And A New Approach To Food Product Label Regulation, William Cusack
Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar
The Supreme Court has recognized First Amendment protection for “commercial speech” since 1975. Commercial speech doctrine seeks to balance advertiser interest in speech, consumer interest in information, and society’s interest that “economic decisions in the aggregate be intelligent and well-informed.” Regulations and compulsory disclosures of commercial speech play a part in ensuring consumers are well-informed. Yet, there continues to be consumer confusion surrounding the commercial speech doctrine’s application to food labeling. Lawmakers continue to pass regulations that are unnecessary or nonsensical. Regulators continue to enforce these regulations, even if the state interest in doing so is minimal or non-existent. There …

A New Conatus For The New World: Dewey’S Response To Perfectionist Conceptions Of Democratic Education, Jasmin Özel, Dave Beisecker, Joe Ervin
Philosophy Faculty Research
We argue for a reconsideration of the claim that Spinoza’s perfectionist conception of education was ushering in a form of radical humanism distinctly favorable to democratic ideals. With the rise of democratic societies and the corresponding need to constitute educational institutions within those societies, a more thoroughgoing commitment to democratic social ideals arose, first and foremost in American educational thought. This commitment can be seen especially in Dewey’s philosophy of education. Specifically, Dewey and Spinoza had strikingly distinct conceptions of the overall aims of schooling. While Spinoza takes the aim of education to be the perfection of a student’s original …
Computational Methods For Comparative Analyses Of Discourses, Zachary Stine
Computational Methods For Comparative Analyses Of Discourses, Zachary Stine
Theses and Dissertations
An underexplored aspect of the abundant linguistic data available for computational analysis is the potential for conducting large-scale comparative analyses between different discourses as a more rigorous complement to existing methods. A significant obstacle in comparative studies is the requirement that a researcher distinguish between discursive distinctions that are superficial and those that reflect deeper, structural relationships between the discourses being compared. In this dissertation, I describe two methodologies for comparing discourses in terms of their underlying structures, drawing on distributional semantic models and information theory. These methodologies are explored within three case studies in which the discourses of several …
