Online Patriarchal Bargains And Social Support: Struggles And Strategies Of Unwed Single Mothers In China, Xiaoman Zhao, Sun Sun Lim
Online Patriarchal Bargains And Social Support: Struggles And Strategies Of Unwed Single Mothers In China, Xiaoman Zhao, Sun Sun Lim
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Patriarchal bargains have been studied in many settings as a strategy that helps women circumvent constraints and forge spaces for individual empowerment. Despite the growing use of mediated communication, little is known about how patriarchal bargains are enacted and realized within online interactions such as in discussion forums. By analyzing how Chinese unwed single mothers renegotiate the state’s oppressive population control and gender policies through their online activity, this study proposes the concept of “online patriarchal bargain” to extend patriarchal bargain theory to women’s Internet use. It further explores linkages between social support and patriarchal bargain to elucidate how support …
Battling Over Bathwater: Greywater Technopolitics In Los Angeles, Sayd Randle
Battling Over Bathwater: Greywater Technopolitics In Los Angeles, Sayd Randle
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
In Los Angeles, domestic wastewater recycling ("greywater") systems are controversial, loved by local environmentalists and disdained by the city's water agencies. Drawing on fieldwork among greywater advocates and public water agency workers, this article examines how greywater systems function as nodes that unsettle relations between residents and the public agencies that manage the city's water grid. Elaborating the longstanding frictions over greywater reuse in LA reveals how these fixtures are mobilized by advocates to rescript the roles of both individuals and the state within the urban waterscape. Detailing public agency workers' resistance to this form of selective disconnection from the …

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to establish if transformational leadership influenced teachers’ attitudes and usage of information and communication technologies in an urban public school in Colombia. Transformational leadership components were examined to determine if school leaders exhibited transformational leadership characteristics and if their leadership style influenced teachers’ attitudes and information and communication technologies usage. A convenience sample of 29 primary teachers and four school leaders participated in the study. There were 16 teachers who participated in semistructured interviews and 13 teachers who participated in a 90-minute focus group discussion. Semistructured interviews, document analysis, focus group discussion, …
Limits Of The Rule Of Law: Negotiating Afghan "Traditional" Law In The International Civil Trials In The Czech Republic, Tomas Ledvinka, James M. Donovan
Limits Of The Rule Of Law: Negotiating Afghan "Traditional" Law In The International Civil Trials In The Czech Republic, Tomas Ledvinka, James M. Donovan
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
Drawing on ethnographic research of judicial cases in the Czech Republic which involve the law in migrants' countries of origin, this Article outlines how multiple strategies handle encounters with the legal-cultural differences of Afghanistan in order to neutralize what may be called the "alterity" of law. The Article suggests that far from being analytical tools, concepts such as "context," "culture," and "customary" are strategically used by courts to neutralize unsettling aspects of foreign Afghan legalities. Further, it applies Leopold Pospisil's ethnological concept of legal authority as a vehicle for reinterpreting the contextual differentiation of Afghan "traditional" law as an alternative …
Exploring A New Dimension Of Learning And Work In Kosovo: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Non-Formal Learning, Employability, And The Job Performance Of Young People, Clirim Sheremeti
Theses
The mismatch between what is taught in schools and what is required in the labor market is one of the foremost problems that the labor market and young people in Kosovo face today. In 2019, 49.4% of working-age young people in Kosovo were unemployed and 32.5% of youth in Kosovo were not in education, employment, or training (NEET), the highest percentage in the region ("Punësimi dhe analiza e tregut të punës në Kosovë", 2020). Out of those who were employed, 56% of them work in occupations that do not match their educational qualifications ("What are the challenges of being young …

‘Jesus Is Not A Foreign God’: Baptist Music Making In Burma/Myanmar, Heather Maclachlan
‘Jesus Is Not A Foreign God’: Baptist Music Making In Burma/Myanmar, Heather Maclachlan
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Christians in the Southeast Asian country of Burma, also known as Myanmar, make up approximately five percent of the national population. The Christian community of Burma includes both Catholics and Protestants, and Baptists predominate among the Protestants. In this article I argue that twenty-first century Protestant Burmese Christians fulfill both aspects of a “twofold legacy” bequeathed to them by Adoniram Judson, the first Baptist missionary to Burma, and that their fulfillment of this legacy is manifest in their musical practices. I further argue that it has been, and continues to be, to Burmese Christians’ advantage to emphasize both aspects of …
A Politics And Ethics Of Viewing Photographs Of Duterte’S “Drug War”: Towards Reconceptualizing The Political Community, Rosa Cordillera A. Castillo
A Politics And Ethics Of Viewing Photographs Of Duterte’S “Drug War”: Towards Reconceptualizing The Political Community, Rosa Cordillera A. Castillo
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
This paper proposes a framework for a politics and ethics of viewing photographs of atrocities and suffering through an analysis of photographs of Rodrigo Duterte’s “drug war” in the Philippines and responses to these images. It situates these politics and ethics of viewing in a context of violent othering and Ariella Azoulay’s conceptualization of “regime-made disaster.” This framework is grounded on fellow-feeling and imagined identification as well as on the relationality, powers of mourning, and ethical responsibility that Judith Butler asserts and is operationalized through the “civil contract of photography” called forth by Azoulay. Following Azoulay and Butler, this paper …

“Thrilla In Manila”: Troubling Theatricality And Uneasy Spectator Affects Surrounding The Ringside Bar Midget Boxing And Wrestling, Neslie Carol Tan
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
This paper illustrates how performance and affect inform disability politics in the case of Filipino Little People wrestlers and boxers at the Ringside Bar along a red-light district in Makati City, Philippines. The archive of the study focuses on the reception of its primarily foreign visitors as manifested online, including the bar’s unofficial Facebook account, review-based websites, and select travel and expatriate blogs/vlogs where reviews of these attractions most actively circulate. First, I map out the troubling theatricality of midget wrestling and boxing, identifying their cast, choreographies, and designs, to reveal traces of freak show traditions. Second, I unpack the …

Towards A Decentered History Of Palestinian Revolutionary Cinema? Case Study Of The Film “Tall El Zaatar” In The Audiovisual Archives Of The Italian Communist Party, Hugo Darroman
Regards
The film Tall El Zaatar (1977, Abu Ali, Pino, Chamoun, Palestine/Italy), a co-production between the Palestinian Cinema Institute and the Italian Communist Party’s (PCI) audiovisual company, was considered lost for three decades and finally rediscovered in 2011.
Beyond the dramatic stories surrounding this film, Tall El Zaatar reveals the importance of considering the transnational dimension of Palestinian militant cinema.
In this article about Tall El Zaatar, I approach the history of Palestinian revolutionary cinema through the traces left within the archives of an institution with which the Palestinian filmmakers collaborated.
On the basis of a set of interviews and …
Iraqi Cinema Beyond The Screen And The Archives Of Leisure, Pelle Valentin Olsen
Iraqi Cinema Beyond The Screen And The Archives Of Leisure, Pelle Valentin Olsen
Regards
The emergence of new forms of leisure in Iraqi urban landscapes, such as cinemas, nightclubs, and theaters, unleashed debates about the dangers and potentials of leisure.
The result of this process is a vast, albeit scattered, archive of texts that deal with practices and institutions of leisure.
The archive of leisure, as it pertains to cinema, can be located across a variety of texts including memoirs, short stories, student essays, police records, official discourse, medical texts, and works by Iraqi historians.
Given the limited access to Iraqi film and cinema archives, the archive of leisure can offer an important addendum …

Ciné-Archivistes And The Metaleptic Archive Of Lebanese Cinema, Claire Launchbury, Marilyn Matar, Max Silverman
Ciné-Archivistes And The Metaleptic Archive Of Lebanese Cinema, Claire Launchbury, Marilyn Matar, Max Silverman
Regards
The article considers three Lebanese films – Il était une fois, Beyrouth (1995) by Jocelyne Saab, the short Le Liban à travers le cinéma (2003) and the documentary Cinéma de guerre au Liban (2003), both by Hady Zaccak – to explore the archival impulse in their composition.
We suggest that this impulse takes two major forms: the use of a montage of sequences from Lebanese films, or films about Lebanon, and crossovers between narrative thresholds and between fact and fiction.
We draw on Gérard Genette’s version of metalepsis to analyze the nature of these crossovers, and on the notion of …
Reflections On Indian Casino Gaming And The Image Of The “Rich Indian”, Maja Muhic
Reflections On Indian Casino Gaming And The Image Of The “Rich Indian”, Maja Muhic
UBT International Conference
This paper revisits the controversial debates regarding casinos on Native American Reservations. Gambling on Native Indian reservations is a fairly recent phenomenon dating from the 80s. Gaming on native land raised a number of questions, ranging from legal issues to cultural tensions which excelled with surrounding communities. However, gaming on Native American land created a new image of the previously unimaginable “rich Indian” and it thus shook the myths about Native Americans. Gaming on native land has therefore disturbed the two most dominant perceptions about Natives – that of the inferior, savage, oppressed on the one hand, and the noble …

Meeting Musical Experience In The Eye: Resonant Work By Teacher Candidates Through Body Mapping, Shelley M. Griffin
Meeting Musical Experience In The Eye: Resonant Work By Teacher Candidates Through Body Mapping, Shelley M. Griffin
Visions of Research in Music Education
When considering the possibility of teaching elementary music, many teacher candidates experience fear and lack of self-confidence. Addressing this issue points to the necessity of honoring teacher candidates’ informal music experiences in shaping music teacher identity. Integrating visual art into this process fosters a deeper understanding and connection with musical experience. Engaging students in creating visual narratives through body mapping allows for transformation in the teacher preparation process. In this article, the theoretical and methodological roots of body mapping are traced and situated in arts-based inquiry. Findings from a two-year narrative inquiry are uncovered as teacher candidates reveal their sentiments …
Dewey, Hippie Communes, And Education, Luis S. Villacañas De Castro
Dewey, Hippie Communes, And Education, Luis S. Villacañas De Castro
Education and Culture
In this article I aim to establish a relevant connection between John Dewey’s educational philosophy and the hippie communes of the United States during the nineteen sixties and seventies. After an assessment of Dewey’s philosophy against the background of the countercultural sixties, I summarize and organize Dewey’s philosophical thought around the concepts of growth, experience, education, democracy, and occupations. I then look closely at seven memoirs describing life in five different hippie communes, and draw on them to present illustrations of the main tenets of Dewey’s educational philosophy and of its contemporary significance.

On The Struggles And Experiences Of Southeast Asian American Academics, Long T. Bui
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
This article examines Southeast Asian Americans (SEAA) academics in the U.S. academy, relating their complex positionalities within higher education to their communities and societies. While many educational studies have been done on SEAA students, almost none focus on professional scholars and college faculty. Combining cultural-structural critique with close analysis of public writings and personal interviews, the article finds that that SEAA are ignored, and/or tokenized in the Ivory Tower due to structural as well as epistemological issues. It indicates that the public discourse and policies about Southeast Asians in academia not only neglects racial and class hierarchies, but obscures issues …
Through The Eyes Of Children: Telling Insights Into Music Experiences, Shelley M. Griffin
Through The Eyes Of Children: Telling Insights Into Music Experiences, Shelley M. Griffin
Visions of Research in Music Education
Seeing music education through the eyes of children leads to developing deepened conceptualizations of children’s daily musical lives, both in- and out-of-school. By thoughtfully attending to children’s perspectives and experiences, children become central informants to the life of elementary school music curricula. Various literature speaks to the relevance of this critical topic and examines various influences on children’s musical perspectives such as community context, digital media, and popular culture. A narrative is offered detailing a two-phase, three-month study guided by the research questions: 1) How do children experience music in their daily lives? and 2) How do children’s musical experiences …
Mystery, Fire, And Intrigue Representation And Commodification Of Race In Band Literature, Joseph Abramo
Mystery, Fire, And Intrigue Representation And Commodification Of Race In Band Literature, Joseph Abramo
Visions of Research in Music Education
This article is a critical examination of ostensibly multicultural music for concert bands. Using Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic violence, I argue that “multicultural” band music, while celebrating diversity and inclusion, actually do the opposite—they are instead, created and used as tools that reproduce stereotypes and racial tropes. This system— where the symbolically violent act of racial tropes are misrecognized as such and celebrated as lessons in diversity—helps reify and perpetuate racial inequalities in society.
