Demographic Change In The North Atlanta Metro Area, Zachary Lloyd Nov 2021

Demographic Change In The North Atlanta Metro Area, Zachary Lloyd

Symposium of Student Scholars

The northern Atlanta suburbs are perhaps the premiere destination for migrants, both domestic and international, into the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. Filled with activities, good schools, and endless dining options, these communities are not only relatively safe to raise a family in, but also offer plenty to do for married couples and retirees. The counties of Gwinnett and Cobb, along with the northern portion of Fulton County (known as North Fulton) are the traditional northside suburban destinations, but growth there has slowed because much of the land is now densely developed. Predictably, the suburbs have extended northward through the counties of …

Derek Romanek (Uli Ingram), Department of Geography and Anthropology, Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, GA, 30144

The Atlanta region is one of the fastest growing regions in the United States of America. With a growing population there is an increase in the demand for resources including food. Food security is a global issue and does not only effect developing nations. To improve sustainability the United Nations came up with 17 Sustainable Development goals. To better understand what we can do to improve sustainability and meet the …

Perceptions Of Science And Engineering Majors' L2 Academic Writing, Erica L. Meyer Lewko

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Writing in different disciplines can be challenging for students whose second language is English. While this issue has received some attention in the literature, it has not been addressed in a Middle Eastern context. This study, carried out at an English-medium university in Egypt, was undertaken to examine the perceptions of undergraduate students majoring in science and engineering disciplines and their professors of the quality of the students’ writing. In the first part of the study, 35 undergraduates completed an online questionnaire containing both Likert scale and open-ended items about writing for classes in their major. Six student participants were …

Labouring For Inclusion: Debating Immigrant Contributions To Chile, Megan Sheehan Nov 2021

Labouring For Inclusion: Debating Immigrant Contributions To Chile, Megan Sheehan

Sociology Faculty Publications

Over the last three decades, Chile has experienced transformative migratory flows, becoming more diverse in the process. As migrants from Latin American and Caribbean countries settle in Chile, they often face stereotypes laminating race, ethnicity, and nationality and shape paths toward inclusion through the job market. Amid the implementation of visa restrictions and the rollout of a new migration law, current debates over migration foreground ideas about which groups productively contribute to the nation’s development – discourses often linked to labour. Government rhetoric and policy debates frame a broader discussion of the role of migration in Chile, with both Chileans …

Hypertension, a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases, remains poorly controlled in many countries. In the Philippines, it is still one of the leading causes of preventable deaths despite the accessibility and availability of essential technologies and medicine to detect and treat hypertension. This paper characterizes the ‘therapeutic itineraries’ of people with hypertension from poor communities in rural and urban settings in the Philippines. We employ longitudinal qualitative methodology comprised of repeat interviews and digital diaries using mobile phones from 40 recruited participants in 12 months. Our findings demonstrate that therapeutic itineraries, rather than being organized according to categories that …

Medieval Realism And Mythopoeia: Philosophy And Literature In Tolkien, Diego Klautau Nov 2021

Medieval Realism And Mythopoeia: Philosophy And Literature In Tolkien, Diego Klautau

Journal of Tolkien Research

This article focuses on the relationship between philosophy and literature in J.R.R. Tolkien’s essay On Fairy-stories. Delivered as a lecture in 1939 and published in 1947, the text presents the author’s conception of the literary genre known as “fairy-stories” and, in this article, I explore the possible philosophical and theological mediations and references in Tolkien’s investigation. The objectives of this article are twofold: to highlight the literary theory proposed by Tolkien as part of the philosophical tradition of medieval realism, with conceptual correspondences in Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, and Thomas Aquinas; and to demonstrate Tolkien’s original contribution to the appreciation …

University Of Dayton Sociologist Uses Eggs, Gravity To Demonstrate Social Inequality For Students, Allison Brace

College of Arts and Sciences Newsroom

By taking a familiar egg drop activity in which students design a “nest” to protect a raw egg from a high fall and adding several class-conscious twists, a sociology professor illustrates the relationships to introduce students to the topic of social inequality and vulnerability.

All Things Arabia: Arabian Identity And Material Culture, Ileana Baird, Hülya Yağcıoğlu

All Works

By employing the innovative lenses of ‘thing theory’ and material culture studies, this collection brings together essays focused on the role played by Arabia’s things - from cultural objects to commodities to historical and ethnographic artifacts to imaginary things - in creating an Arabian identity over time. The Arabian identity that we convey here comprises both a fabulous Arabia that has haunted the European imagination for the past three hundred years and a real Arabia that has had its unique history, culture, and traditions outside the Orientalized narratives of the West. All Things Arabia aims to dispel existing stereotypes and …

The Song Of The Soul: Transforming Disabling Illness Through Art, Zulis Yalte Nov 2021

The Song Of The Soul: Transforming Disabling Illness Through Art, Zulis Yalte

Theses

The focus of this qualitative, arts-based inquiry was to understand how disabling illness might be transformed through art. A/r/tography - art/research/teaching and writing, was the method used to explore and understand the meaning(s) held within the art: Border Crossings - a conceptual, figurative, sculptural installation. The installation embodied the experience of disabling illness, symbolically depicting power relationships, identities, subjectivities and the multi-dimensional nature of being, of one coming up against the institution, the illness and the self. Guided by the work of Heidegger (Hermeneutic Circle), Deleuze and Guatarri (Rhizome and The body without Organs) and Foucault (Power Relationships), the A/r/tographer …

Qualitative Insider Research In A Government Institution: Reflections On A Study Of Policy Capacity, Bobby Cameron

The Qualitative Report

Embarking on a qualitative Ph.D. research project in public administration is often daunting for novice researchers. For those students who consider adopting an emic or insider approach for their research, the ethical, methodological, and analytical challenges that lay ahead may seem insurmountable at times. In this article, I reflect on my experience as a Ph.D. student completing qualitative research with my colleagues to study policy capacity in a provincial government in Canada. I review how I constructed an ethical framework by integrating policy from Research Ethics Boards and government. Throughout the article, I deal primarily with ethical considerations and the …

Policing As Public Good: Reflecting On The Term "To Protect And Serve" As Dialogues Of Abolition, Tracey Meares, Gwen Prowse Nov 2021

Policing As Public Good: Reflecting On The Term "To Protect And Serve" As Dialogues Of Abolition, Tracey Meares, Gwen Prowse

Florida Law Review

This Essay is based on a lecture that was to be delivered in person in March 2020 but was cancelled as a result of the initial ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic. That a discussion of policing in the United States was cancelled because of what may well turn out to be the most significant public health crisis of this decade, if not this century, is important as these two subjects are intimately related.

In the pages below, this Essay highlights how ordinary people discuss a reconceptualization of policing in ways that respond to the current moment. The data comprise a …

Seventh-Day Adventism And The Achievement Of Transcendent Identity, Yasmin Phillip Nov 2021

Seventh-Day Adventism And The Achievement Of Transcendent Identity, Yasmin Phillip

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is one of the most racially and culturally diverse religious groups in the United States. With the church’s Biblical mandate to proclaim the Three Angels’ messages to all peoples, the need for a unity that acknowledges yet transcends individual and collective differences is imperative. However, racial and cultural tensions, particularly between Caucasians and African Americans, continue to hinder this aim. While theological discussions regarding such issues are common within the church, sociological nuances are not always clearly pointed out. This paper investigated sociological theories behind and challenges to multicultural religious settings, the obstacles Adventist history has …

Finding Structure & Composition Of Southeastern Peri-Urban Forests, Aj Williams, Nancy Hoalst Pullen Nov 2021

Finding Structure & Composition Of Southeastern Peri-Urban Forests, Aj Williams, Nancy Hoalst Pullen

Symposium of Student Scholars

Having accurate and up-to-date urban and peri-urban forest inventory data are crucial to understanding and/or predicting the impacts of environmental change. Threats to forest health, including pest infestations, fungal diseases, insects, and invasive species, can be detected, managed and even prevented with consistent inventory and analysis of forests. This is particularly true for urban and peri-urban forests, where human-created disturbances (or lack thereof) influence the composition and structure of the trees. For this study, an inventory of trees within an established forest inventory research plot (50mX50m) at the KSU Field Station was taken from August-October 2021. For each stem, the …

Examining The Effectiveness Of “Turn Around Don’T Drown”, Chance D. Bryant

LSU Master's Theses

Extreme heat is the deadliest weather hazard in the U.S. Flooding is the second worst, and flash flooding is the deadliest form of flooding. The nature of these flood deaths contains a human element that deserves greater study. Since 2004, the National Weather Service has attempted to educate the public with its slogan, ``Turn Around Don’t Drown". Vehicle related mortality rates in Texas since 1996 were examined to answer the question of whether ``Turn Around Don’t Drown" has been effective. The slogan has a large footprint on the social media platform Twitter, with most of the Tweets coming from private …
