From Major To Minor Characters: The Fallen Woman And Her Female Friends In The Novels Of Wollstonecraft, Hays, And Austen, Anne Mclaughlin Jan 2021

From Major To Minor Characters: The Fallen Woman And Her Female Friends In The Novels Of Wollstonecraft, Hays, And Austen, Anne Mclaughlin

English Honors Papers

In this thesis I argue that Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Hays, and Jane Austen use female-female friendships, sororal relationships, and depictions of the “fallen” woman in their novels to expose the oppressive nature of patriarchy and marriage for women. Wollstonecraft and Hays were radical in their time, which is represented in their novels that point out marriage’s inequities towards women in regard to divorce laws and custody laws. Focusing on how marriage impacts a woman’s friendships, Austen acknowledges the potentially isolating nature of marriage.

Wollstonecraft and Hays wrote novels that eschew the marriage plot by focusing on how female-female relationships provide …

“There Is A North”: Fugitive Slaves, Political Crisis, And Cultural Transformation In The Coming Of The Civil War, Kellen Heniford

Civil War Book Review

John Brooke shows that "between 1850 and 1854, white northerners experienced fundamental political and cultural shifts that pushed enough of them towards an active antislavery politics that a conflagration with the slaveholding South became almost inevitable."

Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory And His Ideas On Promoting Creativity, Hani Morgan Jan 2021

Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory And His Ideas On Promoting Creativity, Hani Morgan

Faculty Publications

This book chapter highlights Howard Gardner's contributions to the areas of education and creativity. It includes an introductory section on his background and accomplishments. The chapter focuses on his theory of multiple intelligences, Gardner's best-known theory, and provides details on how he got the idea for this theory. It offers an explanation of this theory and the implications it has for educators. His theory of human intelligence contradicts the view that there is one type of intelligence that could be measured by standardized tests. Gardner first described seven intelligences and later added an eighth. The chapter also focuses on Gardner's …

Background: Empirical evidence suggests that schizotypy is a useful construct for analyzing and understanding psychotic disorders. However, several issues remain to be resolved. Method: This selective, critical review, addresses some questions and limitations, and discusses future directions of work. Results: First, we present a conceptual outline and discuss the evidence from translational and interdisciplinary studies on schizotypy. Next, we examine and discuss newer analytical and methodological approaches, including network and machine learning approaches. We also discuss newer psychometric identification approaches, such as those using biobehavioral and ambulatory assessment. Next, we review recent cross-cultural studies in schizotypy research. Finally, we identify …

Explanations For Brazil’S Inequality Reduction From 1989 To 2015, José N. Cabrera-Schneider Jan 2021

Explanations For Brazil’S Inequality Reduction From 1989 To 2015, José N. Cabrera-Schneider

Nebraska Anthropologist

Latin America has been known for its persistent inequality, and the explanations of its origin vary greatly. However, in recent years (the 1990s to early 2010s) inequality in Latin America decreased significantly. In this paper, I focus on the inequality trends in Brazil to look for particular drivers that reduce inequality. Among the essential drivers are education; a reduction in the income gaps between gender, race, geography, and formality; and types of income, such as income from labor or income from conditional cash transfers. However, the effect of the drivers is not always the same, especially for education.

China’S Three Gorges Dam: Development, Displacement, And Degradation, Trent M. Carney Jan 2021

China’S Three Gorges Dam: Development, Displacement, And Degradation, Trent M. Carney

Nebraska Anthropologist

China’s state-led push towards modernization and enhanced economic growth has been marked by environmentally unsustainable practices, the results of which are still being combated today (Sapiro 2001). The construction of the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in Hubei province, China, represents the largest civil engineering project of the modern era. The dam is capable of generating one-sixth of China’s total electrical capacity; however, China’s attempts to go green come at a substantial cost. (Gleick 2009; Morgan & Waretini 2013; Paerl et al. 2011; Xu et al. 2013). Some of these consequences include increased geologic activity: the forced resettlement …

Tourism’S Impacts On Local Populations, Morgan Glup Jan 2021

Tourism’S Impacts On Local Populations, Morgan Glup

Nebraska Anthropologist

This writing serves to discuss the various impacts of tourism on local populations. Despite the growth of the tourism industry, only a handful of anthropological studies about the impact of tourism on local populations exist. Therefore, this writing is focused on the study of tourism by anthropologists as there is much about tourism that lends itself well to being studied from an anthropological perspective. Issues relevant to anthropology such as political economy, social change, and cultural identity are directly affected by tourism. A brief overview of the work done by anthropologists on tourism and local populations is discussed. Many anthropological …

Taking Aim At “Fake News”: Brazil’S Legislative Agenda For Online Democracy, Jeffrey Omari Jan 2021

Taking Aim At “Fake News”: Brazil’S Legislative Agenda For Online Democracy, Jeffrey Omari

Saint Louis University Law Journal

Like the United States, Brazil has recently been plagued by a crisis in online disinformation. After the country’s 2018 presidential elections, many Brazilians experienced a shock similar to that experienced by U.S. voters after the 2016 election of Donald Trump. The shock was the result of the election of Brazil’s far-right wing Jair Bolsonaro and his striking political ascent, which was fueled by supporters who mobilized online disinformation campaigns for Bolsonaro’s competitive advantage. During Brazil’s 2018 elections, Bolsonaro’s supporters employed these disinformation campaigns, which often preyed on Brazil’s poor, to gain a voting base in disadvantaged communities. Moreover, these disinformation …

Is Diverse Television Really Diverse?: An Examination Of Shondaland, Nick Newsome, Julia Gold, Angelina Hammond Jan 2021

Is Diverse Television Really Diverse?: An Examination Of Shondaland, Nick Newsome, Julia Gold, Angelina Hammond

Research Days Posters 2021

Have you ever been watching a television show and noticed that the majority of characters are white, cisgender, and heterosexual while there are only a few characters who represent multiple minority identities? This is often the case in television when a limited number of characters are assigned many different minoritized identities, becoming catchalls for diversity. We test this phenomenon through our media analysis of Shondaland, a production company that is widely regarded as more progressive and inclusive relative to its cohort. Its ten ensemble cast drama series—ranging from Grey’s Anatomy to How to Get Away with Murder to Bridgerton—provide ample …

The Effect Of Visual Media On General Perceptions Of Healthy Bodies, Brooke Biernacki, Elijah Goldenberg, Laura Miller

Research Days Posters 2021

Visual media play a significant role in people’s daily lives. The increase in visual media associated with by the internet and social media fuels our curiosity about the media’s influence on perceptions of healthy bodies. For the purposes of our research, we are defining a healthy body as a sustainable level of nutrition and exercise as reasonable with respect to a person’s ability. We are collecting data through an online survey that asks participants to view various images of celebrities and Olympians and determine whether they would consider their bodies as healthy or unhealthy on a Likert scale. The participants …

The Deleterious Consequences Of Pakistani Patriarchy: Sex Trafficking, Eva Miller Jan 2021

The Deleterious Consequences Of Pakistani Patriarchy: Sex Trafficking, Eva Miller

Research Days Posters 2021

Sexism courses pervasively through every legal and cultural system humanity is subject to, and thus sex trafficking is not unscathed by the ravages of misogyny. At the core of this crime exists a fundamental issue: pervasive patriarchal and traditional gender roles. Sex trafficking relies on the foundational perception of women as objectified and dehumanized sex objects. Therefore, countries that prioritize women in domestic roles are more likely to source trafficking. Research corroborates this claim, arguing that less developed, wealthy, and politically stable countries often serve as source countries. Thus, despite no legal restrictions against Pakistani women, a rigid conservative culture …

The Role Of “Love Goddesses” And What They Reveal About Women In Different Cultures, Kayleigh Mcgeeney, Arthur O'Sullivan, Joshua Schull Jan 2021

The Role Of “Love Goddesses” And What They Reveal About Women In Different Cultures, Kayleigh Mcgeeney, Arthur O'Sullivan, Joshua Schull

Research Days Posters 2021

Many cultures make fundamental claims about the nature of humanity through myths. In this review, we examine the stories surrounding what we term “love goddesses” around the world from roughly 1000 BC to 1000 AD. We analyze the themes present in each story, as well as the norms upheld about the essential nature and roles of women through these myths. Love goddesses are typically exemplars of a given culture’s ideal of femininity, with exceptions such as Xochipilli, who has a more difficult-to-define identity. We are looking at the contemporaneous cults that surround Rati, Aphrodite/Venus, Hathor, Freyja/Frigg, Oshun, Inanna/Ishtar, and Xochipilli …

Racism And Medical Care: Intersectional Analysis Of Covid-19 Treatment, Hudson Burrows, Gabrielle Mazza, Debra Perlmutter, Emily Vega

Research Days Posters 2021

It is crucial to analyze the ways in which Black women are discriminated against in the United States healthcare system. As a nation, we are witnessing in real-time the ramifications of the inadequate care Black women commonly receive during the Covid-19 pandemic, however this is historically only one stage of many where Black women suffer at the hands of prejudiced medical treatment. Leading research on the subject presents quantitative data and patient interviews that provide evidence for systemic, discriminatory treatment on the part of healthcare providers. We are looking at patient/health care provider interaction, levels of satisfaction in the care …

Media, Law, And The Gay/Trans Panic Defense, Dylan Strober, Harrison Picallo Jan 2021

Media, Law, And The Gay/Trans Panic Defense, Dylan Strober, Harrison Picallo

Research Days Posters 2021

The gay/trans panic defense is a legal strategy that is used to try to lower the sentence of a defendant in cases of assault, claiming that certain actions were justified because an individual had “deceived” them as a result of their sexual or gender orientation. We analyze how cultural perceptions of gay/trans panic shape the way we understand the legitimacy of this legal defense. We look at this in two ways: first, we are using a media analysis to examine how gay/trans panic is represented in film and television to understand how it becomes culturally legitimized. Second, we conduct a …

Exploring The Food Landscape In Ann Arbor And Ypsilanti, Mi: Neighborhood Racial Characteristics And Food Availability, Sara L. Srygley

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The neighborhood retail food environment is an indicator of short- and long-term health conditions. Disparities in Covid-19 health outcomes have been identified as specifically impacting minority populations in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, MI. This study explores these cities' neighborhood retail food environments alongside neighborhood racial composition with three measures: Modified Retail Food Environment Index (mRFEI), Grocery Store Density, and Fast-Food Density. This study's purpose is to determine whether racial composition predicts the food environment and therefore may contribute to poor health outcomes. The results indicate that high Asian population has a significant relationship to healthier food environments while high Black …

The Demographic Indicators Of Political Distrust And Action In Hong Kong, Andrew Koo Jan 2021

The Demographic Indicators Of Political Distrust And Action In Hong Kong, Andrew Koo

Pitzer Senior Theses

In recent years, Hong Kong has seen massive encroachment from Mainland China, resulting in Hong Kong’s own legislature introducing policy aimed at supporting Mainland Chinese authority in Hong Kong. As a result, Hong Kong has seen two large scale acts of political dissent, The Umbrella Movement/Occupy Central Movement in 2014, and the protests in response to an Extradition Bill in 2019. These events highlight that Hong Kong’s political landscape is shifting, and shifting fast. This study employs data provided by the World Values Survey to measure how measures of trust in state institutions and willingness to take political action have …

Barriers And Facilitators To Qualitative Data Sharing In The United States: A Survey Of Qualitative Researchers, Jessica Mozersky, Tristan Mcintosh, Heidi A. Walsh, Meredith V. Parsons, Melody Goodman, James M. Dubois Jan 2021

Barriers And Facilitators To Qualitative Data Sharing In The United States: A Survey Of Qualitative Researchers, Jessica Mozersky, Tristan Mcintosh, Heidi A. Walsh, Meredith V. Parsons, Melody Goodman, James M. Dubois

Open Access Publications

Qualitative health data are rarely shared in the United States (U.S.). This is unfortunate because gathering qualitative data is labor and time-intensive, and data sharing enables secondary research, training, and transparency. A new U.S. federal policy mandates data sharing by 2023, and is agnostic to data type. We surveyed U.S. qualitative researchers (N = 425) on the barriers and facilitators of sharing qualitative health or sensitive research data. Most researchers (96%) have never shared qualitative data in a repository. Primary concerns were lack of participant permission to share data, data sensitivity, and breaching trust. Researcher willingness to share would increase …

Pandemic, Plague, Pestilence And The Tropics: Critical Inquiries From Arts, Humanities And Social Sciences, Anita Lundberg, Kalala J. Ngalamulume, Jean Segata, Arbaayah Ali Termizi, Chrystopher J. Spicer

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

The Tropics have long been associated with exotic diseases and epidemics. This historical imaginary arose with Aristotle’s notion of the tropics as the ‘torrid zone’, a geographical region virtually uninhabitable to temperate peoples due to the hostility of its climate, and persisted in colonial imaginaries of the tropics as pestilential latitudes requiring slave labour. The tropical sites of colonialism gave rise to urgent studies of tropical diseases which lead to (racialised) changes in urban planning. The Tropics as a region of pandemic, plague and pestilence has been challenged during the COVID-19 pandemic. The novel coronavirus did not (simply) originate in …

Validity Of A Four-Item Household Water Insecurity Experiences Scale For Assessing Water Issues Related To Health And Well-Being, Sera L. Young, Joshua D. Miller, Edward A. Frongillo Jr., Godfred O. Boateng, Zeina Jamaluddine, Torsten B. Neilands

Faculty Publications

We sought to determine whether a shortened version of the 12-item Household Water Insecurity Experiences (HWISE) Scale, which measures water insecurity equivalently in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), is valid for broad use. Using data from 9,261 households in 25 LMICs, subsets of candidate items were evaluated on their predictive accuracy, criterion validity, and sensitivity-specificity. A subset with items assessing "worry," "changing plans," "limited drinking water," and "inability to wash hands" because of problems with water (range: 0-12) were highly correlated with full HWISE Scale scores (correlation coefficient: 0.949-0.980) and introduced minimal additional error (root mean square error: 2.13-2.68). Criterion …
