Servant-Leadership And The Montessori Philosophy: A Principal’S View, Christine M. A. Lapierre, Bonnie Caldwell Jan 2021

Servant-Leadership And The Montessori Philosophy: A Principal’S View, Christine M. A. Lapierre, Bonnie Caldwell

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Servant-leadership is a philosophy of leadership that has stirred the hearts of many leaders across the world over the last few decades. They can be found in organizations such as businesses, education and non-profits. Taking into consideration Robert Greenleaf’s (1991) assertion, they believe that “the servant-leader is servant first…It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first” (p. 7). According to Greenleaf, a true natural servant-leader responds by listening first and has developed the ability to do so. The followers then see this person as a servant.

An Evangelical Theology Of Religions, Timothy C. Tennent Jan 2021

An Evangelical Theology Of Religions, Timothy C. Tennent

The Asbury Journal

This is a reprint of chapter seven of Dr. Tennent’s book Invitation to World Missions (Grand Rapids, MI: Kregel Publications 2010) published with permission from Kregel Publications and Dr. Tennent. It provides an evangelical response to the issue of a theology of world religions, especially as a critique and corrective of the classical paradigm of exclusivism, inclusivism, and pluralism as initially developed by Alan Race and later refined by Paul Knitter. Tennent argues that the paradigm itself is problematic and needs to be nuanced to include a broader theological framework beyond issues of soteriology as well as a recognition of …

Monad1: Internet Archival Software, Hunter Mundy Jan 2021

Monad1: Internet Archival Software, Hunter Mundy

Theses & ETDs

Internet archival is the work of recording Internet data for posterity. Nothing lasts forever on the Internet and without archival, valuable cultural and historical websites may disappear. Tools to preserve Internet data exist but suffer from flaws that preclude them from being the universal solution to data loss. In order to address these flaws, I developed a software tool that would allow the average Internet user to archive websites they find important in a quick and easy to understand manner. The prototype tool is at a stage where it saves a website’s HTML and with continued development, can archive all …

The Crux Of Conservation: Debating Ecotourism During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Ky Miller Jan 2021

The Crux Of Conservation: Debating Ecotourism During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Ky Miller

Theses & ETDs

Like many communities and conservation organizations around the world, Monteverde, Costa Rica is struggling to strike a balance between the risks and rewards of using ecotourism as a financial resource for conservation and sustainable development, which has often suffered from a mismatch between ecotourism’s vision and practice. In this thesis, I assess how communities and conservation organizations economically dependent on ecotourism engage in debates regarding its value as a biodiversity conservation strategy and livelihood basis during the COVID-19 pandemic. I also examine how COVID-19 has affected conservation organizations’ protected area management strategies and engagement with nearby communities. By drawing on …

Evaluation Of Potential Antimicrobial Properties Of Herbal Medicines Compared To Antibiotics On Human Gut Microbes, Raian (Ryan) Counsman Jan 2021

Evaluation Of Potential Antimicrobial Properties Of Herbal Medicines Compared To Antibiotics On Human Gut Microbes, Raian (Ryan) Counsman

Theses & ETDs

This thesis evaluated the effect of modern antibiotics and traditional herbal medicines on bacteria isolated from the human gut. Antibiotics are medicines that are used on humans or animals to kill or slow down the growth of bacteria (Davies, 2017). Due to improper antibiotic usage, antibiotic resistance, the acquired ability of bacteria to avoid the antimicrobial effects of antibiotics, is becoming more prevalent (Davies, 2017). Resistance prevents antibiotics from clearing infections, creating dangerous bacteria such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, abbreviated as MRSA (Sakoulas, 2004). Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are problematic in our modern-day world (Sakoulas, 2004). When antibiotics are used incorrectly, more …

Exploring Identity And Culture Through The Overlaps Of Anthropology And Literature In The Works Of Amitav Ghosh And José María Arguedas, Annabelle Wilson Jan 2021

Exploring Identity And Culture Through The Overlaps Of Anthropology And Literature In The Works Of Amitav Ghosh And José María Arguedas, Annabelle Wilson

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis, I explore the overlaps of literature and anthropology in the works of two novelist-anthropologists, José María Arguedas and Amitav Ghosh. Arguedas is a Peruvian ethnologist, folklorist, and writer while Ghosh is an Indian sociologist, historian, anthropologist, and writer. Their novels, Deep Rivers (1958) and The Calcutta Chromosome (1995), respectively, focus on matters concerned with cultural transformations, the representation of the subaltern or the Other, and marginalized communities and histories. Because of the authors’ backgrounds as both novelists and anthropologists and the anthropological concerns present in their literary work, I became interested in studying how the two fields …

A Past Informing Present: An Autoethnographic Examination Of Identity Development, Alexandra Goldberg Jan 2021

A Past Informing Present: An Autoethnographic Examination Of Identity Development, Alexandra Goldberg

Theses & ETDs

Autoethnography is an emerging method of qualitative inquiry within the social sciences. Born out of ethnography and a call for increased reflexivity in research, autoethnography incorporates the researcher as a member of the community being studied. Using autoethnographic, ethnographic, oral history, and narrative research methods, I revisit moments from my past, using an individual perspective, and attempt to situate them within broader contexts. Participant interviews, presented as dialogue, are used to provide a wider lens to my own interpretations of past events. My analysis combines my positions as researcher and participant, to consider the role of family structure, class, and …

Poikilos, Polish, The Perception Of Color, And Polychromy In Ancient Greek Sculpture, Brittany Braasch Jan 2021

Poikilos, Polish, The Perception Of Color, And Polychromy In Ancient Greek Sculpture, Brittany Braasch

Theses & ETDs

The history of polychromy reveals that most sculptures from ancient Greece and Rome were originally extensively painted. Research has mainly focused on the function and selection of pigments as well as the location of the color on ancient marble statues. Many questions still remain concerning the aesthetics of the prepared surfaces of polychrome sculpture. Our understanding of the aesthetic and optical qualities of Greek and Roman marble sculpture is still in its infancy. However, with the development of modern technologies allowing for advanced technical examinations, it is now quite possible to discern such optical qualities. There also remains evidence of …

A Laboratory Of Progressive Reform: Nationalism And Poverty Relief In Working-Class, Irish Catholic Griffintown, Montreal, Caroline Newberg Jan 2021

A Laboratory Of Progressive Reform: Nationalism And Poverty Relief In Working-Class, Irish Catholic Griffintown, Montreal, Caroline Newberg

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the Irish Catholic working-class ethnic enclave of Griffintown in Montreal, Quebec, during the height of the progressive movement in North America, 1890 through 1920. Using both original archival research and secondary sources to build upon history, anthropology, and urban studies, I argue that within Canada, poverty reform in Griffintown embodied the progressive focus on urban, industrial poverty, including the clash and collaboration between elite reformist goals and working-class survival tactics. I emphasize the different nationalisms motivating poverty relief: state-based nationalism for elite progressive reformers, and ethnicity-based nationalism for Irish Catholics in Griffintown. My first chapter contextualizes the …

Vaccination: Religious Exemptions And Reasoning Of Individuals With Vaccine Hesitancy, Emmelia Lukensbull Jan 2021

Vaccination: Religious Exemptions And Reasoning Of Individuals With Vaccine Hesitancy, Emmelia Lukensbull

Theses & ETDs

Vaccination is a major public health accomplishment that acts to protect citizens, but it also acts as an exertion of state control that citizens may resist for multiple reasons. My thesis explores the intersections between religion and vaccination with a focus on religiously motivated vaccine hesitant decision making. I conducted a general population survey and a series of interviews with vaccine hesitant individuals. The goal of the interviews was to understand motivations around vaccine decision making, particularly religious motivations. The survey outcomes were focused on religion’s impact on vaccination, mass vaccination opinions, and new vaccine decisions making. My findings suggest …

The Fox In Between Wolves And Dogs, Katherine Moore Jan 2021

The Fox In Between Wolves And Dogs, Katherine Moore

Theses & ETDs

Katie Moore explores the social dynamics of atheists and Catholics through an allegorical play script authored by herself. Within the play atheists and Catholics are represented by wolves and dogs based on academic research of the two canines including, behavioral experiments, history, anthropology, and biology of both as well as the additional fox character. The basis of Katie’s interpretation of atheists and Catholics is mostly based on rich personal experience with both groups. Katie puts forth that atheists and Catholics should interact more and know and accept each other as individuals, which while they live by different beliefs are no …

Globalized Wedding Traditions Of Contemporary Istanbul’S Urban Elite, Isabella Cibelli Du Terroil Jan 2021

Globalized Wedding Traditions Of Contemporary Istanbul’S Urban Elite, Isabella Cibelli Du Terroil

Theses & ETDs

Weddings are a microcosm for which larger sociocultural forces can be studied. Factors that influence society will influence culture, which consequently will affect a major cultural affair such as a wedding. In Turkey where the fall of the Ottoman Empire gave rise to the Turkish Republic, the political, economic, and societal changes that developed during this transition and beyond profoundly affected the Turkish culture and its traditions, especially among secular urban elites. In this thesis, I will discuss and analyze how Turkish wedding traditions among the urban elites of Istanbul have been transformed, from the late Ottoman Empire to contemporary …

Mask Wearing And The Cultural Divide: A Snapshot From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jacob Spence Jan 2021

Mask Wearing And The Cultural Divide: A Snapshot From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jacob Spence

Theses & ETDs

COVID-19 has killed millions of people worldwide, and while multiple studies have shown that face masks are effective at mitigating the spread of the virus there are many people who refuse to wear them. Using qualitative and quantitative survey data collected online through pro- and anti-face mask Facebook groups, this study attempts to trace whether or not empathy or other determinants play a role in one’s decision to wear a face mask in public. While the findings do not show a direct link between empathy and mask wearing in public, other determinants such as political affiliation and news sources were …

Unilineal Evolution On Display: Three Case Studies On British Museum Display, Jenna Courtade Jan 2021

Unilineal Evolution On Display: Three Case Studies On British Museum Display, Jenna Courtade

Theses & ETDs

The British Museum has displayed a majority of non-British artifacts since its inception in 1753. This thesis explores the messages implied in the way the British Museum displayed non-European artifacts in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Specifically, this thesis argues that the British Museum's display of artifacts from non- European cultures reflected the theory of unilineal evolution. This argument is expanded on through three case studies on the display of three specific non-European collections in the museum: the Benin Bronzes, the Amaravati Marbles, and the Rosetta Stone. Through the use of British Museum guide books and newspaper articles …

Pandemic Poetry: An Exploration Of Disability Poetics, Audience Feedback, And Digital Re-Performance In A Global Pandemic, Cole Schmidt Jan 2021

Pandemic Poetry: An Exploration Of Disability Poetics, Audience Feedback, And Digital Re-Performance In A Global Pandemic, Cole Schmidt

Theses & ETDs

This thesis project is a creative one, seeking to employ theory through practice, for my own betterment as a scholar and artist. I sought to explore the ways in which audience feedback and re-performance affect my own engagement with my work in disability poetics and spoken word performance. Due to the necessity of a global pandemic, this thesis also explores this through the lens of digital performance. I utilize theory from three main disciplines of study -Music, Poetry, and Performance- to begin to answer my research questions. These questions include: how is effective performance produced and received, what techniques and …

Lo Que Quedó De Ti; Violence At The U.S.-Mexico Border. Awareness Through Art, Yajaira Urzua-Reyes

Theses & ETDs

This paper explores how artists use their work to bring attention to the U.S.-Mexico Border. Throughout the paper I discuss my thesis project entitled, Lo Que Quedó de Ti, which consists of six oil paintings. I discuss the significance of each painting by providing history on the militarization of the border and the rise of undocumented migration. My work serves as a memorial by highlighting the number of deaths that have occurred in the desert. I draw inspiration from notable artists who have created artwork alongside the border and who have explored similar themes.

Chinese Jade: Making The Past Serve The Present, Karl Hahn Jan 2021

Chinese Jade: Making The Past Serve The Present, Karl Hahn

Theses & ETDs

Jade is a semi-precious mineral that has played a significant role in Chinese societies since antiquity. As a material culture, jade has a life beyond the context that it was created in and is capable of evoking images of the past. This paper explores jade culture’s significance to Chinese culture at different points in time and its use in state and political legitimization. Jade culture has been recycled throughout Chinese history to reflect societal shifts and to meet the particular needs of a given society. This paper starts by looking at jade culture during Chinese antiquity, and then during the …

An Analysis Of Prehistoric Shell Tools (Columella Tools And Gastropod Hammers) From Snake Island, Sarasota County (8so2336), Michelle Calhoun

Theses & ETDs

During a monitoring-salvage project (1994-2012) of an eroding shell midden on the southwest shore of Snake Island, Sarasota County, numerous Pinellas plain and sand-tempered plain ceramics, sea turtle bones (880 – 1015 CE), and hammers (Types A, C, D, & F) were discovered together in situ. Others had recently been removed from primary context, scattered along the shoreline. Nearly 300 shell specimens were discovered during the salvage work, with many exhibiting human-made modifications. Columella tools, made from the central column spine of whelks and conchs, were distributed along the entire shoreline, with upland shovel tests dating them to the earlier …

COVID-19 is a global pandemic highlighting historic, systemic inequities. The inequities are demonstrated through raw data of disease risk and severe outcomes of hospitalization or death. This thesis focuses on insights from the Multicultural Health Institute (MHI) during the Summer and Fall of 2020. MHI developed information about the infectious disease COVID-19 and through weekly strategic intervention community meetings. The work emphasized mitigating public health disparities through analysis of social determinants of health. The thesis focuses on Marian Anderson Place, a brownfield in Sarasota, Florida, because of its proximity to the historic Newtown district, the area of Sarasota with the …
