For three summers in the late 1930s, Dr. Aleš Hrdlička, the preeminent physical anthropologist in the United States in the first half of the 20th century, led expeditions to southwestern Alaska to investigate the earliest peopling of that region. Curator of Physical Anthropology at the U.S. National Museum at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the acknowledged “founding father” of physical anthropology in the United States sailed north with small crews of young men—whom he called his “boys”—in the summers of 1936, 1937, and 1938 to probe ancient villages, camps, and burial places on Kodiak Island and throughout the Aleutian …

Stoking The Flame: Subsistence And Wood Energy In Rural Alaska, United States, Jennifer I. Schmidt, Amanda Byrd, Jennifer Curl, Todd J. Brinkman, Krista Heeringa

Energy costs are large and increasing in rural Alaska communities, so communities are turning to renewable energy. While, many of these communities have a mixed subsistence-cash economy, the relationship between renewable energy and subsistence has not been studied. Tanana, Alaska has a biomass program and we conducted interviews with 61 households in 2017 to understand how residents perceive the program and its association with subsistence activities. We analyzed Alaska Department of Fish & Game subsistence surveys from 89 communities to estimate differences in subsistence harvest between households that harvest wood and those that do not. Interviews indicated that people who …

Since 2015, the Trasimeno Archaeological Project has been investigating a Roman villa located between the localities of Gioiella and Vaiano in the territory of Castiglione del Lago. A preliminary surface survey of the site (2015) indicated that the villa was occupied from the 2nd century B.C. through the 3rd century A.D. While there is extensive evidence for an Etruscan presence in the region, the Gioiella-Vaiano Villa is the first Roman period site to be scientifically investigated. Of particular interest is understanding the changing role of the villa in the economic and social life of Central Italy from the mid- Republican …

Teaching Social Justice In Kindergarten To Reduce Bias In Children, Deanna Marie Villari
Teaching Social Justice In Kindergarten To Reduce Bias In Children, Deanna Marie Villari
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand what happens when students in a Kindergarten classroom participate in learning about social justice to create a culture of empathy. Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (Ladson-Billings, 1995) serves as a theoretical framework for implementing mini-lessons using the 2020 Teaching Tolerance's Anti-Bias Framework and social justice standards to create an inclusive kindergarten environment. The objective was to increase engagement in the classroom and create a more positive and comfortable environment for students during play group and class discussions around picture books. Qualitative research was used in this study, which focused on read-alouds, class discussions, and …
Parental Buffering In The Context Of Poverty: Positive Parenting Behaviors Differentiate Young Children's Stress Reactivity Profiles, Samantha M. Brown, Lisa J. Schlueter, Eliana Hurwich-Reiss, Julia Dmitrieva, Elly Miles, Sarah Enos Watamura
Parental Buffering In The Context Of Poverty: Positive Parenting Behaviors Differentiate Young Children's Stress Reactivity Profiles, Samantha M. Brown, Lisa J. Schlueter, Eliana Hurwich-Reiss, Julia Dmitrieva, Elly Miles, Sarah Enos Watamura
Psychology: Faculty Scholarship
Experiencing poverty increases vulnerability for dysregulated hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis functioning and compromises long-term health. Positive parenting buffers children from HPA axis reactivity, yet this has primarily been documented among families not experiencing poverty. We tested the theorized power of positive parenting in 124 parent–child dyads recruited from Early Head Start (Mage = 25.21 months) by examining child cortisol trajectories using five samples collected across a standardized stress paradigm. Piecewise latent growth models revealed that positive parenting buffered children's stress responses when controlling for time of day, last stress task completed, and demographics. Positive parenting also interacted with income such that …

Creatio Continua In Missio Dei: Ecological Spirituality And Pedagogy In Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’, David O. Reyes
Loyola Papers
This paper examines an important aspect to which the Pope dedicates the entire Chapter 6 of this landmark document: the formation of an authentic ecological spirituality and pedagogy to address the current global crisis. Unfortunately, thischapter is frequently neglected in discussions, perhaps not only because of its placement towards the end of the encyclical, but also because spirituality and pedagogy are often viewed as the exclusive realm of a few experts, resulting in a certain reticence to tackle them. Hence, this paper develops the notion of creatio continua as a practical summons to participate in the missio Dei. It then …

Jacques Dupuis’ Trinitarian Christology And Its Contributions Towards Interreligious Dialogue, Alexander Hendra Dwi Asmara
Jacques Dupuis’ Trinitarian Christology And Its Contributions Towards Interreligious Dialogue, Alexander Hendra Dwi Asmara
Loyola Papers
This paper analyzes pivotal ideas of the controversial Belgian Jesuit theologian Jacques Dupuis in the field of interreligious dialogue. In particular, it addresses the possibility of using Dupuis’ Trinitarian Christology as a lens for understanding other religions and establishing a mutually enriching relationship with them, without falling into the extremes of inclusivism or exclusivism, or into eclecticism, syncretism, and relativism. While some of Dupuis’ ideas may seem scandalous at first glance, the author’s deftly nuanced analysis of his thoughts contextualizes his framework within the purview of the infinity of Trinitarian love and vitality, which is not exhausted in the definitive …

Designing The Grade 12 Christian Life Education Curriculum Of Xavier School Nuvali Through The Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm And The Life-Faith-Life Framework, Elisa Manansala-Magtibay
Loyola Papers
This paper chronicles the efforts of a relatively new, Jesuit-run K-12 school located in an emerging urban center a few miles south of Metro Manila as it strives to integrate Ignatian principles in its religious instruction curriculum. Aside from providing a valuable glimpse into the design process behind their program, this article also contains several seminal ideas that can be explored and further developed by those involved in the education ministry. Among these is the potential to use more widely known and current teaching and learning models, such as Understanding by Design and Groome’s Shared Christian Praxis model, as concrete …
