Psychological Casualties As A Source Of Friction During War And A Mediator Of Coerced Peace Efforts, Karl Umbrasas Apr 2021

Psychological Casualties As A Source Of Friction During War And A Mediator Of Coerced Peace Efforts, Karl Umbrasas

Journal of Strategic Security

The United States homeland does not enjoy sanctuary in the twenty-first century geopolitical environment. Near-peer rivals, such as China and Russia, have capabilities that can impact the United States homeland during a high-end war. Adversaries’ aerospace capabilities have the potential to cause large volumes of psychological casualties among the United States population. Psychological casualties during a high-end war could serve as the basis for a mass call to end a war due to the altered information processing seen among traumatized people. Such a call to end a war could result in unfavorable peace settlements. The United States homeland must improve …

Colonialism, Cohabitation, And Charismatic Llamas: Representations Of Animals In Felipe Guaman Poma De Ayala's El Primer Nueva Corónica Y Buen Gobierno, Laura Varela Mejia

Art History Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the role of animals, specifically llamas, in El primer nueva corónica y buen gobierno, a manuscript that dates to 1615-16, and was hand-written and illustrated by the Andean author Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala. Through the lens of animal studies, I analyze the manner in which Poma represented llamas to convey greater ideas surrounding the nature of colonial life under the Spanish empire, as well as the nostalgic remembrance of Inca practices before the conquest.

My study focuses on three of the Corónica’s drawings: “The second age of the world: Noah,” and how its reinterpretation …

Intercultural Communicative Competence: A Necessary Ability For All, Alvino E. Fantini Apr 2021

Intercultural Communicative Competence: A Necessary Ability For All, Alvino E. Fantini

World Learning Publications

In today’s world, there is a growing need to promote intercultural communicative competence (ICC) due to increasingly multilingual and multicultural societies. Moreover, more people today have contact across cultures than ever before in human history. For these reasons, ICC has become a national and international imperative and a necessary ability for all. In response, many higher education institutions seek to internationalize curricula; however, often without a coherent plan to provide intercultural education to all students. ICC is promoted primarily through study abroad programs; however, only a small percentage of students participate. Similarly, civic aid organizations in various countries promote ICC …

Mapping Of Research Publications On Ethnomusicology Through The Lens Of Web Of Science, Puspanjali Hazarika, Atrayee Kashyap Apr 2021

Mapping Of Research Publications On Ethnomusicology Through The Lens Of Web Of Science, Puspanjali Hazarika, Atrayee Kashyap

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study attempts to define ethnomusicology as the study of people making music through the lens of mapping of research publications. People make sounds that are in ways or other sometimes considered as “music,” stretching into a specific cultural domain. This study delves into the idea of different types of music publications as a contingent cultural category. The necessary data were collected from the Web of Science database during 1996-2020 and analyzed accordingly.

“The Jesuit Mission Proves We Were Here”: The Case Of Eighteenth-Century Jesuit Missions Aiding Twenty-First Century Tribal Recognition, Andrew R. Beaupre Apr 2021

“The Jesuit Mission Proves We Were Here”: The Case Of Eighteenth-Century Jesuit Missions Aiding Twenty-First Century Tribal Recognition, Andrew R. Beaupre

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Records indicate that during the French colonial period, Jesuits established four mission congregations within the territory now known as Vermont. These missions were established to preach to both French colonists and Native converts on Isle La Motte, on the Missisquoi River in Swanton, at Fort Saint-Frédéric on Lake Champlain, and in the area known as the Koas on the Connecticut River. In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the Abenaki peoples of Vermont have had a long and difficult road to gain state and federal recognition. These descendant communities have invoked the existence of Jesuit missions to the Abenaki as proof …

“Our Languages Do Not Die, They Are Being Killed”: Indigenismo And Its Effects On Indigenous Language Revitalization, Nathalie Martinez Apr 2021

“Our Languages Do Not Die, They Are Being Killed”: Indigenismo And Its Effects On Indigenous Language Revitalization, Nathalie Martinez

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

Language and identity are political acts that are inextricably linked to and rooted in socio-historical and socio-political events. Existing scholarship on identity-based social movements has yet to address language activism as a part of its theoretical framework. This paper seeks to consider the unique socio-historical context of indigenismo—an ideological wave coordinated by non-Indigenous groups seeking to define Indigenous identity—for the analysis of language activism within the field of social movement theory. Drawing from historical, ethnographic, and applied linguistic studies, this article examines indigenismo in Abiayala—the continental Western hemisphere commonly referred to as the Americas—to highlight the impact of the policies …

Preliminary Analysis Of Periosteal Reaction Of The Tibia In The Erie County Poorhouse Cemetery (1851-1913), Jordan Phillips Apr 2021

Preliminary Analysis Of Periosteal Reaction Of The Tibia In The Erie County Poorhouse Cemetery (1851-1913), Jordan Phillips

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

Gender-based occupational differences during the height of the Industrial Revolution are particularly apparent when examining the risk of injury and disease. For Buffalo, NY, this was no exception, as it acted as an urban center that enticed numerous European immigrants seeking employment. This study investigates tibial periosteal reactions by sex and anatomical location from the Erie County Poorhouse Cemetery (1851-1913) to illuminate life in this historic era. The type and extent of reactions were scored, and these criteria were compared by side (e.g., left) and bone segment (e.g., proximal ⅓ of diaphysis) for each individual with tibia(e). Of the 181 …

A Biblical Assessment Of Ministry Practices As They Relate To The Child And The Family, Benjamin Baldridge Apr 2021

A Biblical Assessment Of Ministry Practices As They Relate To The Child And The Family, Benjamin Baldridge

Senior Honors Theses

The methodology behind children’s ministry is never expressly stated throughout Scripture; thus when examining the biblical nature of said ministry in the modern church, one must examine the biblical principles on which it is founded. This thesis seeks to examine the threefold nature in which children are described—as individual souls, members of the family unit, and members of the local church—and compare how the current models for ministry to children seek to address them in this way, if at all. From there, a methodology will be discussed for adjusting the current models to address children biblically, thus increasing the effectiveness …

Cannabis Capitalism In Colorado: An Ethnography Of Il/Legal Production And Consumption, Lia Berman Apr 2021

Cannabis Capitalism In Colorado: An Ethnography Of Il/Legal Production And Consumption, Lia Berman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Coloradans have changed their fundamental views on illegal substances since the decriminalization of cannabis in Colorado. Since the legalization of medical cannabis in 2014, state-sold dispensary cannabis products have straddled the line between legal and illegal network systems in a hybridized “il/legal” market system, a term designed to be ambiguous of the formal and informal economies that it represents (Nordstrom 2007, xxvii). The cannabis commodity chain has proved both familiar and strange when it comes to its production, consumption, and distribution of a federally illegal substance. Colorado’s history as a pioneer in culture and legislature has been repeated with cannabis …

Educational Experiences Of Congolese Refugees In West-Central Florida High Schools, Michaela J. Inks Apr 2021

Educational Experiences Of Congolese Refugees In West-Central Florida High Schools, Michaela J. Inks

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since 2016, refugees from the Congo Wars (RFCWs) have been one of the largestpopulations of refugees resettled in the United States. High-school aged RFCW students are, however, dropping out of Florida public high schools are alarmingly high rates. This study uses ethnographic methods such as interviews and participant observation to investigate educational challenges experienced by RFCW youth. This study has three objectives: to learn more about refugees with discontinuous education and the barriers to graduating from public high schools after resettlement; to better understand Tampa bay area programs that serve culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students; and to use ethnographic …

Chemical Mapping To Evaluate Post-Depositional Diagenesis Among The Earliest Ceramics In The Teotihuacan Valley, Mexico, Wesley D. Stoner, Barry J. Shaulis Apr 2021

Chemical Mapping To Evaluate Post-Depositional Diagenesis Among The Earliest Ceramics In The Teotihuacan Valley, Mexico, Wesley D. Stoner, Barry J. Shaulis

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Chemical and mineral sourcing techniques are commonly employed in archaeology to reconstruct patterns of ceramic exchange and raw material procurement practices for the past, but the effects of post-depositional diagenesis are still often ignored despite a number of key studies warning that the composition of ceramics from archaeological deposits often diverges greatly from their original composition at the time of production. This current study on diagenesis derives from a large chemical and petrographic analysis of some of the earliest ceramics (1500-100 cal Before Common Era [BCE]) in the Basin of Mexico at a time when the development of ceramic trade …

Mems 411: Lost Grains Winnower, Seth Jack, Matthew Finer, Alex Maggioni, Kristian Nilsen

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class

This project involved designing an upgrade for the grain winnower in Dr. Mueller’s anthropology lab at Washington University in St. Louis. A winnower is a device that separates chaff from usable grain after harvesting and threshing. Many such devices exist, from industrial-scale winnowers sorting high volumes of grain to personal coffee bean winnowers. However, the constraints of the lab space and the specialized nature of the grain being winnowed presented specific constraints. An interview with Dr. Mueller was necessary to determine a ranked list of needs for use in the final product. After creating these rankings, a mock-up was used …

The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol And Critical Pedagogy: Foundations For Critical Practice With English Learners, Gabriel Brossy De Dios , '21 Apr 2021

The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol And Critical Pedagogy: Foundations For Critical Practice With English Learners, Gabriel Brossy De Dios , '21

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

In the United States, K-12 students face a wide range of challenges emanating from persistent and systemic issues, particularly racial and class-based inequalities. For example, the COVID-19 pandemic has both demonstrated and deepened these racial and economic inequalities: in the disproportionate death rate of black and Latino people, as well as the rise in unemployment and economic insecurity. Individual students are affected by these global and national issues at the micro level of schools, work, and family, among other settings. Education alone will not solve issues such as economic inequality and racism — in fact the educational system as it …

Sacrifice And Redemption: A New Approach From Mimetic Theory, Nicholas Gregory Roumas Apr 2021

Sacrifice And Redemption: A New Approach From Mimetic Theory, Nicholas Gregory Roumas

Dissertations (1934 -)

What is the meaning of theories of redemption, and what use do they have? This dissertation answers these questions from the vantage point of two ideas from Girardian Mimetic Theory: the hypothesis that human relationality is rooted in triangular structures of desire, and the hypothesis that the sacrificial death of Christ is what Girard calls a scapegoating event. For Girard, ritual sacrifice is a repetition of an original scapegoating event on which social cohesion depends. With the death of Christ, scapegoating has been denuded and sacrifice rendered inoperable, bringing humanity into a novel historical situation. Using Girard’s early seminal texts alongside …

Determination Of The Presence Of Rickettsia Spp. And Borrelia Spp. Carried By Tortoise Ticks From Madagascar, Anna Phan Apr 2021

Determination Of The Presence Of Rickettsia Spp. And Borrelia Spp. Carried By Tortoise Ticks From Madagascar, Anna Phan

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Ticks were removed from three species of Malagasy tortoises, Astrochelys yniphora, A. radiata, and Pyxis arachnoides (comprising two subspecies P. a. arachnoides and P. a. oblonga), between 2012 and 2015. The ticks were presumed to be from the genus Amblyomma. Ticks were morphologically identified and then checked molecularly to confirm their classification or identify any ticks that could not be morphologically identified. Molecular identification was done via end-point PCR that amplified tick cytochrome oxidase (CO1) and tick 12S rRNA genes. Ticks were screened via a real-time polymerase chain reaction assay for the presence of Rickettsia spp. …

Leading Hispanic Serving Community Colleges: Latinx Faculty Perceptions About The Aacc Competencies, Sanjuanita Chavira Scott Apr 2021

Leading Hispanic Serving Community Colleges: Latinx Faculty Perceptions About The Aacc Competencies, Sanjuanita Chavira Scott

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

Latinx students are likely to enter postsecondary education at a community college. This phenomenon has led to the increase in community colleges being designated as Hispanic Serving Institutions. The designation of Hispanic Serving is not driven by mission, but rather by number of enrolled students who identify as Latinx. This preliminary descriptive study examined the perceptions of faculty at four Hispanic Serving community colleges in Texas regarding their proficiency on leadership competencies for faculty, whether there were differences in the perceptions of Latinx and non-Latinx faculty members, and whether certain leadership competencies influence faculty members’ decisions to pursue leadership opportunities. …
