Figuring Collectivity In The Age Of Climate Crisis, Maximilian Elihu Chaoulideer Apr 2021

Figuring Collectivity In The Age Of Climate Crisis, Maximilian Elihu Chaoulideer

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation confronts a contradiction that has come to define human life over (at least) the past quarter millennium: though we have, collectively, become the first species to inscribe ourselves into the geological record, we have, individually, diminishing power over the shape of the world toward which we blindly work. While imperial expansion and unfettered fossil fuel extraction threaten to undermine the material conditions of all human life, there is, I argue, a more fundamental problem manifest in anthropogenic climate change, one that poses a representational challenge. Because of its own globality, the threat posed by something as diffuse and …

Animating Heritage: Affective Experiences, Institutional Networks, And Themed Consumption In The Japanese Cultural Industries, Heidi K. Lam Apr 2021

Animating Heritage: Affective Experiences, Institutional Networks, And Themed Consumption In The Japanese Cultural Industries, Heidi K. Lam

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation ethnographically examines a Japanese historical themed park to illuminate the cultural industries’ role in shaping Japanese identity through creative labor, consumption, and institutional relationships. It argues that cultural heritage is animated through embodied experiences (taiken) with performative elements and contingent contexts that take place around a central organization’s selective interpretation and staging of the past. This dissertation is based on 15 months of fieldwork in 2015-2017 at and around “Edo Town,” the pseudonym for a historical themed park in Japan that evokes the Edo or Tokugawa period (1603-1867) in Japan’s history. I explore the creative labor, institutional networks, …

Developing Tradition: A History Of Intercultural Health Governance In Mexico, 1940-2000, Joshua Mentanko Apr 2021

Developing Tradition: A History Of Intercultural Health Governance In Mexico, 1940-2000, Joshua Mentanko

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This is an intellectual and social history of efforts by the Mexican state to order and transform medical pluralism for developmentalist ends in the highlands of Chiapas state between 1940 and 2000. Focusing on state employees, bilingual and indigenous doctors and midwives, and Mexican and foreign anthropologists, it grounds the emergence of “interculturalidad” – or the project of integrating indigenous traditional medicine into state and non-state health institutions – in a broader history of economic development and modernization and indigenous resistance to and negotiation of capitalist and national integration projects. It shows how efforts to integrate traditional medicine have not …

Urban Dreams And Agrarian Renovations: Examining The Politics And Practices Of Peri-Urban Land Conversion In Hanoi, Vietnam, Emily Nguyen Apr 2021

Urban Dreams And Agrarian Renovations: Examining The Politics And Practices Of Peri-Urban Land Conversion In Hanoi, Vietnam, Emily Nguyen

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

In Mễ Trì village on the Western peri-urban edge of Hanoi, Vietnam, landless rice farmers no longer tend to rice paddy fields. Instead, many have converted 40 square meters of their residential space into a small factory for producing an artisanal rice product called cốm (young rice). This small village-based industry has garnered national demand for the product, drawing the attention of central policymakers who want to preserve the craft as a cultural relic of Hanoi. But without land to cultivate the rice inputs, young rice production is largely driven by the outsourcing of grains, the use of inventive new …

Mechanisms Of Resource Competition With Intraspecific Variation, Erica Marie Holdridge Apr 2021

Mechanisms Of Resource Competition With Intraspecific Variation, Erica Marie Holdridge

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Intraspecific trait variation occurs in nearly all species and is found in a variety of traits, including morphological, behavioral, and physiological traits. Unlike fields such as evolutionary biology and behavioral ecology which have long recognized the importance of intraspecific trait variation (ITV), community ecologists have historically viewed ITV as “noise” that obscures broader population- and community-level patterns of interest. However, recent work has demonstrated that ITV can profoundly affect ecological interactions and processes through a variety of mechanisms (other earlier paper, Bolnick et al. 2011). Of particular interest is the effect of ITV on competition and coexistence. Empirical work has …

Culturally-Adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Bilingual Latinx With Depressive Symptoms, Leanne Gonzalez Apr 2021

Culturally-Adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Bilingual Latinx With Depressive Symptoms, Leanne Gonzalez

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

The prevalence of depression is particularly high in the Latinx population, and this population is associated with lower rates of depression diagnosis and treatment. One intervention that has shown to be effective in treating mild to moderate depression is cognitive behavioral therapy. Though the effects of culturally adapted therapy, language being the most common adaptation, have been studied, the difference in outcomes for bilingual, bicultural speakers has not been examined. In this randomized control trial, we will compare the effectiveness of Spanish language cognitive behavioral therapy to that of English language therapy in bilingual, foreign-born, Latinx patients with depressive symptoms. …

Healing Of Violence And Violence Of Healing: Mark’S Hybrid Jesus In Mark 5:1-20, Pierre Célestin Musoni S.J. Apr 2021

Healing Of Violence And Violence Of Healing: Mark’S Hybrid Jesus In Mark 5:1-20, Pierre Célestin Musoni S.J.

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether, in Mark 5:1-20, the author of Mark portrayed Jesus as an assimilated Jew or a transformative resistant. After preliminary matters concerning methodology, nature and scope, and significance, the theoretical framework is established (chapter 1). I discussed the origin of postcolonialism as a field of study, its relationship to biblical studies, and the postcolonial readings of Mark’s Gospel. Then, the thesis focuses on the Roman empire and its arrival in 1st century Palestine (Chapter 2). In this chapter, the roman imperial Weltbildung becomes the focus of the analysis. Subjugated people responded to …

Is Cyrus Of Persia, My Shepherd, His Anointed, An Anticonqueror Of Judah? Toward A Postcolonial Reading Of The Cyrus Oracle In Isaiah 44:24-45:13, Ablam Atsikin Apr 2021

Is Cyrus Of Persia, My Shepherd, His Anointed, An Anticonqueror Of Judah? Toward A Postcolonial Reading Of The Cyrus Oracle In Isaiah 44:24-45:13, Ablam Atsikin

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

A postcolonial reading of the Cyrus oracle (Isa 44:24-45:13) expands the portrait of Cyrus. This thesis argues that a contrapuntal reading of this oracle and the Cyrus Cylinder offers an alternative interpretation of the Persian king. The theological presentation of YHWH endorsing Cyrus as the divine instrument typically receives positive appropriation in scholarly literature. While Cyrus, YHWH’s shepherd and anointed, is posed as a benevolent foreigner, he is also a conqueror of Judah. Enlisting a literary analysis of Isaiah 44:24-45:13, this study discloses the multi-dimensional character of this text. It argues that the Cyrus oracle functions as not only a …

Politics Of Plague: Ancient Epidemics And Their Impact On Society, Natasha Stange Apr 2021

Politics Of Plague: Ancient Epidemics And Their Impact On Society, Natasha Stange

2021 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award

My paper, “Politics of Plague: Ancient Epidemics and Their Impact on Society,” examines the four major plagues that wrought immense destruction across the ancient Mediterranean world: the Plague of Athens (430 BCE), the Antonine Plague (165 CE), the Plague of Cyprian (250 CE), and the Justinianic Plague (541 CE). These epidemics impelled governments to fracture and rebuild, induced the rise and fall of different religions and religious practices, altered military strategies and outcomes, and forced ancient societies to re-examine their structures, values, and inequalities. Such extreme mortalities profoundly impacted each affected society, triggering severe social, political, economic, religious, and military …

There Are No Such Things As Moral Acts: Conceptualizing A New Moral Framework For The Oppressed, Dani Park Apr 2021

There Are No Such Things As Moral Acts: Conceptualizing A New Moral Framework For The Oppressed, Dani Park

Sociology and Anthropology

Both deontological and consequentialist notions of ethics have been duly criticized, the former due to the problem of universal maxims that ignore the delicate intricacies of situations that demand contextual understanding and the latter for ignoring the various moral processes that precede actions. This disillusionment has led some feminists to adopt the ethics of care as a way to subvert patriarchal tones and dehumanizing themes in moral discourse as well a moral relativism that has often been categorized as the ethics of the postmodern age. Yet all normative moral theories, including the ethics of care and moral relativism, posit that …

Entangled Revolutions: Cuba, Nicaragua, And The United States In The Cold War Caribbean, 1979-1990, Emily Snyder

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

“Entangled Revolutions” examines Cuba and Nicaragua’s revolutionary relationship with a sustained lens on institutions, ideology, gender, and local and international frames. My analysis first demonstrates how each revolution’s relationship with the other demanded, and produced, profound domestic and international effects. Nicaragua relied on Cuba for material support and technical expertise; Cuba looked to Nicaragua as a source of revolutionary radicalization. The United States crafted public diplomacy campaigns alongside the Contra insurgency in Nicaragua as it attempted to prevent “another Cuba.” Second, Cuban and Nicaraguan experiences of collaboration were heavily gendered. Though both revolutionary states sought to impose gendered logics on …
