De Soto And Terra Cei, John R. Swanton
Florida Historical Quarterly
In connection with my work as chairman of the De Soto Expedition Commission between 1935 and 1938 I made a study of the documentary and geographical evidence regarding the location of the point where De Soto landed on the Florida coast in 1539 and the position of his first headquarters. While I was assisted to some extent by other members of the Commission, the conclusions reached were more particularly mine and I assume all responsibility for them. They were originally stated in a paper printed in “The Florida Historical Quarterly” (vol. XVI, no. 3; Jan. 1938) and were incorporated later …

Identifying Skeletal Puberty Stages In A Modern Sample From The United States, Jordan T. Wright
Identifying Skeletal Puberty Stages In A Modern Sample From The United States, Jordan T. Wright
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Investigating the onset and progression of puberty can provide insight and evidence for social changes regarding the transition to adulthood. There are also many social factors that can lead to variation in the timing of the onset and progression of puberty. Methods created by Mary Lewis and Fiona Shapland for assessing changes in skeletal development associated with pubertal timing were applied to computerized tomography scans (n=400) from the New Mexico Decedent Image Database and recorded in an attempt to identify adolescent growth trends in a modern skeletal sample from the United States. This is a novel study using the methods …
Pregnancy And Fertility Amongst Women With The Mthfr C677t Polymorphism: An Anthropological Review, Caroline A. Maclean
Pregnancy And Fertility Amongst Women With The Mthfr C677t Polymorphism: An Anthropological Review, Caroline A. Maclean
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Effects of the MTHFR C677T allele on reproduction include multiple complications. The frequency of births with neural tube defects, Down Syndrome, or recurrent pregnancy loss of CC, CT, and TT mothers was measured using data collected from existing literature. Total participants n=2605 (n=1111 cases, n=1494 controls). Results show that folic acid supplementation did not prevent the incidence of NTD pregnancy in CT women. Furthermore, CT women are more fecund overall, producing more pregnancies than CC and TT women. While CT case women did have higher incidences of RPL, NTD pregnancy and DS pregnancy, this is due to the overall greater …

"I Always Feel Like Somebody's Watching Me" Prolonged Use Of Warrantless Video Surveillance And The Fourth Amendment, Samantha J. Mchugh
"I Always Feel Like Somebody's Watching Me" Prolonged Use Of Warrantless Video Surveillance And The Fourth Amendment, Samantha J. Mchugh
Seventh Circuit Review
As technology innovates, Fourth Amendment protections potentially become weaker and allow law enforcement to surveille in new ways. Because of those expanded options, the notion of a reasonable expectation of privacy shrinks, leading to further surveillance by police without a warrant. It is essential to reevaluate what is deemed acceptable under the Fourth Amendment when it comes to prolonged warrantless surveillance by law enforcement. The Supreme Court has evaluated this issue for decades, attempting to adapt Fourth Amendment search analysis to the changing landscape of technological innovation. In a case of first impression, the Seventh Circuit erred by holding that …

What Does The Earth Ask Of Us? (Flyer), Robin Wall Kimmerer
The Idea of Nature Public Lecture Series
We are showered every day with the gifts of the Earth and yet we are tied to institutions which relentlessly ask what more can we take? Drawing upon both scientific and indigenous knowledges, this talk explores the covenant of reciprocity, how might we use the gifts and the responsibilities of human people in support of mutual thriving in a time of ecological crisis.

The Relevance Of Ethnic Identity Among Asian American Populations To Support For The Black Lives Matter Movement, Jenna Navaratnam
The Relevance Of Ethnic Identity Among Asian American Populations To Support For The Black Lives Matter Movement, Jenna Navaratnam
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
This study examined the association between ethnic identity and support for the Black Lives Matter Movement among Asian Americans. A total of 112 Asian American participants completed measures of ethnic identity, political ideology, and support for the Black Lives Matter Movement. Statistical analyses showed moderate levels of ethnic identity among the Asian American populations sampled. Also, participants’ level of ethnic identity was not significantly related to support for the Black Lives Matter Movement. Still, results of this exploratory investigation magnified the complex role immigration history and experience, region of the country resided in, and acculturation strategies may collectively play in …

Embodied Injustices: Covid-19, Race, And Epigenetics, Maria Encinosa
Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
Digital Projects Showcase Exhibitor Award Although historical and even modern accounts of race assume significant biological differences between racial groups, race has little biological meaning. Nonetheless, the social construct of race has real consequences. Racial identity defines boundaries of community and impacts the experiences of individuals, including how people live and die during a pandemic. COVID-19 has disproportionately affected minority communities in the United States, triggering many explanations for racial disparities in health. Through an analysis of sources spanning from popular media to traditional academic journals, I analyze the potential for epigenetic research to serve as a missing link that …

Dental Disparities: A Quantitative & Regional Analysis Of Male Oral Health In The United States, Hannah Merritt, Gordon Rakita
Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
Project of Merit Winner
Multiple factors contribute to the oral health of male individuals in the United States, including economic, regional, and gender disparities. My study compares health care coverage and poverty rates to indicators of oral health status and dental care access such as percentage of tooth lost, number of dental visits, and oral health services at federally qualified health centers. This oral health data is drawn from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention across all fifty states in the year 2018 and from the United States Census. By examining this data, I will be able to answer …

The Second Line Parade And The Construction Of Identity Through Costume In The Group The Undefeated Divas, Gents And Kids., Suellen Da Costa Coelho
The Second Line Parade And The Construction Of Identity Through Costume In The Group The Undefeated Divas, Gents And Kids., Suellen Da Costa Coelho
LSU Master's Theses
This research aims to investigate the role of costume in identity formation in the second line group The Undefeated Divas, Gents and Kids. The methodology used in this research was data collection through interviews with members of the group. Through these interviews, we seek to establish the importance of costume in reflecting and constructing a sense of community within the group.
While the existing literature focuses on the history of second line parades and their importance in Louisiana’s culture, this research intends to explore costume’s meaning and significance. The purpose of this work is to complement the existing literature in …
Infectious Liberty: Biopolitics Between Romanticism And Liberalism, Robert Mitchell
Infectious Liberty: Biopolitics Between Romanticism And Liberalism, Robert Mitchell
Literature
Infectious Liberty traces the origins of our contemporary concerns about public health, world population, climate change, global trade, and government regulation to a series of Romantic-era debates and their literary consequences. Through a series of careful readings, Robert Mitchell shows how a range of elements of modern literature, from character-systems to free indirect discourse, are closely intertwined with Romantic-era liberalism and biopolitics.
Eighteenth- and early-nineteenth century theorists of liberalism such as Adam Smith and Thomas Malthus drew upon the new sciences of population to develop a liberal biopolitics that aimed to coordinate differences among individuals by means of the culling …

Training For The Algorithmic Machine, Stefka Hristova
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
In thinking about the ubiquity of algorithmic surveillance and the ways our presence in front of a camera has become engaged with the algorithmic logics of testing and replicating, this project summons Walter Benjamin’s seminal piece The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility with its three versions, which was published in the United States under the editorial direction of Theodore Adorno. More specifically, it highlights two of the many ways in which the first and second versions of Benjamin’s influential essay on technology and culture resonate with questions of photography and art in the context of …

Investigations at the Native American site complex of Stark Farms in Mississippi, USA, have yielded numerous examples of metal artifacts of European origin. Our study suggests that they derive from contact between the AD 1540–1541 winter encampment of the Spanish Hernando de Soto expedition and the local Indigenous polity. The artifacts display a wide range of modifications, uses, and depositional contexts congruent with hybrid practices. We argue that the early colonial setting of Stark Farms requires a different perspective on cultural mixing than is often applied in studies of European colonialism. This is highlighted by the strongly improvisational nature of …

De Soto’S Ucita And The Terra Ceia Site, Ripley P. Bullen
De Soto’S Ucita And The Terra Ceia Site, Ripley P. Bullen
Florida Historical Quarterly
Any Indian site to qualify as De Soto’s Ucita must possess geographical attributes which agree with those assignable to that site by close reading of the De Soto narratives. This paper examines only the claim of the well-known, large Indian site at Terra Ceia, on the east side of McGill Bay. For this purpose Shaws Point on Tampa Bay is assumed to be the landing place of De Soto’s expedition, although that identification has been questioned by some.
De Soto’S First Headquarters In Florida, John R. Swanton
De Soto’S First Headquarters In Florida, John R. Swanton
Florida Historical Quarterly
Knowing that Hernando de Soto, his expedition, and the places he visited will probably be matters of discussion for years and years, I have not recently ventured any further contributions regarding them. However, challenge of one of my conclusions, the probable site of the Indian town of Ucita where De Soto established his first North American headquarters, has recently been made in a scientifically motivated paper (“The Terra Ceia Site, Manatee County, Florida.” No. 3 of the Publications of the Florida Anthropological Society, by Ripley P. Bullen), and this calls for some comments.
