Carlos Castaneda (1925-1998): Reading Between His Lines, A Summary Judgment, Jay C. Fikes Phd
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
Don Juan is a fictional character. Yaqui in Sonora and Arizona have no history of peyote rituals. These two facts help explain why, by 1975, Castaneda’s followers were seeking shamans comparable to Don Juan among the Huichol of Mexico. In recent years peyote tourists have invaded the sacred land where Huichol venerate the peyote spirit. The rising tide of tourists in that area is rapidly depleting peyote and has stimulated Mexican authorities to incarcerate Huichol peyote hunters (Fikes, 1993; 2013). In the early 1990s Castaneda created a cult, Tensegrity, which taught disciples stylized movements combining “tai chi, modern dance and …

Plastic Shamans, Intellectual Colonialism And Intellectual Appropriation In New Age Movements, Joseba I. Arregi Phd
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
The reality of colonialism plagues indigenous populations and continues into the present, generating new scenarios of oppression. This new oppression is tied to so-called alternative models of progress, to the success of sustainable development, and to the recognition of the importance of biodiversity in the 21st Century. This work presents three processes of biological and cultural appropriation which constitute a new chapter in the long history of colonial aggression and indigenous resistance.
Relationship Between Anxiety And Dietary Quality In College Students, Katie Darnell
Relationship Between Anxiety And Dietary Quality In College Students, Katie Darnell
Honors Theses
College students across many universities show high levels of anxiety in the transition from high school to college. These students must learn to adapt to a higher demand of focus and work that a college education requires, and some students find the pressure to be too much to handle. The purpose of this study was to determine whether college students with high anxiety displayed a poorer diet quality. The sample was college students (N=44) enrolled in undergraduate studies at the University of Mississippi. Students completed an anonymous 39-item questionnaire about their prevalence of anxiety and consumption rates of …
Examining Bystander Blame In Rape And Sexual Assault, Katherine E. Purdom
Examining Bystander Blame In Rape And Sexual Assault, Katherine E. Purdom
Honors Theses
The present study investigated the effect of various factors on blame distribution in sexual violence cases. Participants (N = 378) were randomly assigned to either a rape (N = 187) or sexual assault (N = 190) condition and directed to read a scenario that varied only by the terminology indicated by the condition. Participants were provided two pre-filled slots labeled as the perpetrator and victim. Additionally, they were given two blank “free-response” options in which participants could assign blame and indicate a responsible party if they found it necessary. Data was gathered from the male (N = 163) and female …
Reflecting On Our Terrain: How People And Places Create A Spirit Of Home, Meagan E. Harkins
Reflecting On Our Terrain: How People And Places Create A Spirit Of Home, Meagan E. Harkins
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the nature of home. It situates the idea of home, both as a physical place and a spiritual state, where the subjects of these stories find belonging. Fourteen interviews were conducted, from December 2020 through February 2021, resulting in a series of longform stories. Eight interviews were recorded with immediate family and childhood friends in my hometown, the suburbs of Orlando, Fla. The balance of the stories derived from Zoom interviews, culminating in a 1,200-mile road journey to South Carolina, for the remaining ones.
What emerged from these oral history interviews and ensuing longform pieces are three …
The Particle Ma In Old Sundanese, Aditia Gunawan, Evi Fuji Fauziyah
The Particle Ma In Old Sundanese, Aditia Gunawan, Evi Fuji Fauziyah
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This article will analyse the distribution of the particle ma in Old Sundanese texts. Based on an examination of fifteen Old Sundanese texts (two inscriptions, eight prose texts, and five poems), we have identified 730 occurrences of ma. We have selected several examples which represent the range of its grammatical functions in sentences. Our observations are as follows: (1) ma not only appears in direct dialogues, but also in narrative texts, both prose and verse; (2) ma functions as a copula in nominal sentences, connecting subject and predicate; (3) in conditional clauses containing the conjunction lamun, ma has a function …
From Dugouts To Double Outriggers; Lexical Insights Into The Development Of Swahili Nautical Technology, Martin Walsh
From Dugouts To Double Outriggers; Lexical Insights Into The Development Of Swahili Nautical Technology, Martin Walsh
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The early history of nautical technology in the western Indian Ocean and adjoining parts of the eastern Africa coast is poorly understood. In the absence of evidence from shipwrecks, it has hitherto been based largely on the uncertain interpretation of a few documentary references and speculation surrounding technological parallels and assumed lexical resemblances. This paper examines some of the linguistic evidence in a more rigorous way, by undertaking a cross-dialectal comparison of names for watercraft and terms for outriggers in Swahili (Kiswahili), a Bantu language spoken on the islands and in scattered communities along the western seaboard of the Indian …
Indonesian Discourse Particles In Conversations And Written Text, David-M Karàj
Indonesian Discourse Particles In Conversations And Written Text, David-M Karàj
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The aim of the present paper is an analysis of four most frequent Colloquial Indonesian discourse particles (lho, kok, sih and dong) and the comparison of their occurrences in both spontaneous spoken conversations as well as in written texts (articles from a youth magazine). The author's motivation for choosing the terms discourse particles (instead of for example pragmatic particles) is explained and a new definition of the phenomenon is proposed. First the particles' meanings as given in various dictionaries are presented, it is followed by examples from spontaneous conversations. Next, examples from written text are given, followed by an analysis …

Preserving And Empowering Local Languages Amidst The Covid-19 Pandemic; Lessons From East Kalimantan, Allan F. Lauder, Multamia R.M.T. Lauder, Kiftiawati Kiftiawati
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This article brings together two ostensibly separate subjects: language empowerment and the Covid-19 pandemic. It argues that knowledge of local languages can help disseminate health-related information on a regional level. This addresses two problems simultaneously: the problems raised by the intelligibilty of governmental healthcare protocols and the functions of the use of local languages. The article is a case study presenting a number of interventions in the languages of East Kalimantan and can be seen as an inclusive, grassroots example of health communication. The study was initially a modest attempt to generate on-the-ground examples of health information in the dominant …

Practicalities Of Language Data Collection And Management In And Around Indonesia, Marian Klamer, Owen Edwards, Hanna Fricke, Zoi Gialitaki, Francesca Moro, Axel Palmér, George Saad, Yunus Sulistyono, Eline Visser, Jiang Wu
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Researchers use different approaches when collecting and managing primary language materials during fieldwork. Yet it is important that this work is done in a transparent way, so that it can be used by other researchers, who might have other aims, as well as by the speaker community who might want to use or take note of the collected materials. In this article we use our research experience in language data collection in and around Indonesia in fieldwork projects of three kinds: descriptive fieldwork, linguistic surveys, and projects investigating language contact. Our aim is to provide an introductory and practical guide …

National Register Of Historic Places Evaluations Of Sites Wo2 And Wo5 On The Tusquitee Ranger District, Nantahala National Forest, Cherokee County, North Carolina, James Caleb Hutson
Theses and Dissertations
Following the unauthorized ground disturbance at two undiscovered Early/Middle Archaic sites (WO2 and WO5) within the Trail of Tears protective corridor on the Nantahala National Forest, NC, archaeological investigations undertaken have yielded data potentially important to the understanding of early inhabitants in the Appalachian Summit region. Archaeological investigations at sites WO2 and WO5 have shown that both sites have single occupations as evidenced by statistical analysis of data collected. Also, the two sites have minimal disturbance based on statistical analyses of the dip and strike data of piece-plotted artifacts at the two locales. The thesis outlines the work done at …

Medical Populism And Covid-19 Testing, Kristin Hedges, Gideon Lasco
Development Studies Faculty Publications
This paper uses the lens of medical populism to analyze the impact of biocommunicability on COVID-19 testing through a case study approach. The political efficacy of testing is traced through two mini-case studies: the Philippines and the United States. The case studies follow the approach of populism scholars in drawing from various sources that ‘render the populist style visible’ from the tweets and press releases of government officials to media reportage. Using the framework of medical populism, the case studies pay attention to the ways in which coronavirus testing figured in (1) simplification of the pandemic; (2) spectacularization of the …

Fungsi Sintaktis Kata Jeongmal Dalam Bahasa Korea: Analisis Berbasis Korpus, Anastasia Hannas Putri, Usmi Usmi
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
This paper discusses the syntactic function of the word jeongmal (정말) analyzed through part of speech (품사). In the Korean language, a word can be classified into more than one parts of speech, which is called pumsa tongyong (품사통용) or conversion. An example of pumsa tongyong is the word jeongmal, which can function as an adverb, noun, and interjection. This research shows that such classification makes the word jeongmal has different functions in a syntactic unit, which are main component (predicate), attributive component (adverb), and independent component. In addition, the limitations of the word jeongmal as a noun and POS-tagging …

Bencana Kabut Asap Sebagai Dampak Budaya Konsumsi Dalam Cerpen “Yang Datang Dari Negeri Asap”, Dessy Wahyuni
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Literature, as a work containing facts and fiction, can obscure the conventions of realities and create new realities so that there are no visible boundaries between the real thing and the unreal thing. Fact and fiction coincide and simulate to form hyperreality. In the short story “Yang Datang dari Negeri Asap (Who Comes from the Smoky Country)” by Hary B. Kori’un, the existence of facts and fiction overlap each other. The author created the country of smoke as a fictitious world due to his contemplation on the consumption culture, which is a phenomenon in people’s lives and relates it to …

Decision-making is an essential factor for role-playing games (RPGs), especially in tabletop role-playing games (T.T.R.P.G.) like Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). The utilization of RPGs in the past was for studies performed on the rational decision-making processes involving land reformation. D&D aided in examining the player’s experiences when exploring oneself. Backed by previous studies, the research focused on the Rational Choice Theory (R.T.C.) and the Rational Choice Model (R.C.M.) to examine and calculate the benefits derived from the decisions made by the experienced and inexperienced players within a D&D campaign. The research team used R.C.M. to assess whether or not the …

An Ethical Inquiry To Personhood As The Standard For Sexbot Ownership: A Response To S. Petersen, John Andrei E. Esguerra, Daniel Christopher L. Haduca, Jeulian Clarisse C. Manalo
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
In the field of robot ethics, debates about sexbots, their personhood, and their moral status continue. To provide our stance in this debate, we ask the question: Is it unethical for sexbots to be owned? This paper responds to the claims of Steve Petersen’s (2016) paper “Is it good for them too? Ethical concerns for the sexbots”, where he argues that sexbots are not wronged for performing the functions they are designed for. We respond to this claim by arguing for John Danaher’s Theory of Ethical Behaviorism (2020). If ethical behaviorism is correct in claiming that behavior is a sufficient …

Examining The Effects Of The “Strong Black Woman” Stereotype On Black Women’S Experience With Domestic Violence, Taylor Tristine
Examining The Effects Of The “Strong Black Woman” Stereotype On Black Women’S Experience With Domestic Violence, Taylor Tristine
Sociology & Anthropology Student Scholarship
Major: Psychology
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Maureen Outlaw, Sociology and Anthropology
Through a thorough analysis of published articles and books, this analysis of the effects of the “Strong Black Woman” on Black women’s experience with domestic violence shows major disparities with the experience of White women. While many Black women take pride in being “strong,” this label can have surprisingly complex and simultaneously positive and negative effects on a Black woman’s psyche. Additionally, many effects of the application of this stereotype may seem positive to Black women at the time, but after constant application of the stereotype these women are consistently …

Influence Of Group Change On Scent Marking In A Wild Population Of Verreaux’S Sifaka (Propithecus Verreauxi), Julia C. Dickerson
Theses and Dissertations
This study analyzed scent marking rates of wild Verreaux’s sifaka during dispersals to investigate the impact of group changes on olfactory communication. Our results indicate that scent marking is affected by changes in group structure, but other methods of communication likely play a larger role in mediating group membership changes.
The Soul’S Access To Divine Will: Implications Of Stoic Reason, Christian Will, And Galenic Body In Reformulating The Platonic Philosophy Of The Human Person, Noelle Canty
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Recent anthropologies of the human person reject the Platonic emphasis on “King Reason” because it seems dualistic. In the history of psychology, “anthropology” refers to the structure of a human person. Although Plato views the will as only a part of the rational soul, the psychological anthropologies of three Platonic writers seem to develop Platonic thought through placing the human will above reason. The Stoic, Epictetus, wrote about reason; the Catholic, Erasmus, wrote about the soul; and the Roman doctor, Galen, wrote about the body. Viewing the will as central could result in an anthropology of the human person which …

Obstetric Patients And Healthcare Providers Perspectives To Inform Mobile App Design For Physical Activity And Weight Control During Pregnancy And Postpartum In A Rural Setting, Rachel Tinius, Cathryn Duchette, Sia Beasley, Maire Blankenship, Nancy Schoenberg
Behavioral Science Faculty Publications
Background: Mobile health technology offers the opportunity for women to engage with physical activity promotion programs without many of the barriers commonly associated with exercise during and after pregnancy (eg, childcare concerns, rigid schedules, fear of doing harm to fetus or self, access to fitness facilities, uncomfortable with body in front of others) which may be particularly useful in under-resourced rural environments. We conducted the first known study on perspectives of pregnant women, postpartum women, and obstetric healthcare providers in a rural setting on needs related to the development of a mobile app designed to increase physical activity during pregnancy …
Comparing Lithic Artifacts And Native American Activity At Stark Farm, An Early Contact Period Site In Northeast Mississippi, Gillian Steeno
Comparing Lithic Artifacts And Native American Activity At Stark Farm, An Early Contact Period Site In Northeast Mississippi, Gillian Steeno
Honors Theses
Supposed ancestors of the modern-day Chickasaw, the occupants of Stark Farm inhabited the area known today as Starkville, Mississippi. These Native American peoples left behind archaeological evidence of their occupation, especially in the form of large midden-filled basins. In order to investigate these refuse pits, a lithic analysis was completed using stone typology in order to infer supposed activities. Each of the five contexts are compared to each other to determine which assemblages have similar elements and which ones prove to be unusual in comparison. Through this stone tool analysis, domestic and non-domestic activities and areas in the site can …
Exploring Mental Health Experience In Individuals Living With Temporomandibular Disorders, Wafaa Safour, Richard Hovey
Exploring Mental Health Experience In Individuals Living With Temporomandibular Disorders, Wafaa Safour, Richard Hovey
Patient Experience Journal
Despite the evidence supporting deteriorating mental health because of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) conditions, there is limited evidence of TMD patients' experience regarding how their mental health is affected by the disorders. As a sequence of these conditions, TMD patients suffer from physical and mental complications, not to mention the loss of food enjoyment. In this study, we aim to explore TMD patients' lived experiences who had changed their dietary habits concerning their mental health. Six participants were interviewed to answer open-ended questions during semi-structured interviews regarding their mental health experiences with TMD-related food routine changes. These interviews were held face-to-face …
