Understanding The Bounds Of Legitimacy: Weber’S Facets Of Legitimacy And The Police Empowerment Hypothesis, Kyle Mclean, Justin Nix
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Despite considerable evidence that police legitimacy results in beneficial outcomes like compliance, cooperation, and empowerment, scholars have yet to agree on how to define and operationalize legitimacy. Drawing on Max Weber’s facets of legitimacy, we developed and tested a measure of “traditional authority,” reflecting the possibility that some people legitimate the police more so based on tradition than normative concerns regarding fairness. Confirmatory factor analysis of survey data from a national sample of 701 US adults revealed that our traditional authority items loaded separately from items commonly used to capture feelings of trust, obligation to obey, and moral alignment. Furthermore, …

Dataset For Faunal Analyses Of Biry House Food Remains, Castroville, Tx, Kathryn Maupin
Anthropology Datasets
In 2013, Van Dyke excavated a historic residence located at 309th Paris Street in Castroville, Texas. Beginning in 1844, the house was occupied by the families that had immigrated from the Alsace region of France. Preliminary analyses of the faunal recovered from a lime slaking pit suggested that over the course of the home’s residence, family members incorporate wild taxa into their diet in addition to their traditional Alsatian foodstuffs. Expanded analyses of the faunal remains from additional features provide additional evidence that the diet of the residents slowly transitioned away from a strict Alsatian diet and eventually included …

Population Status Of Tapanuli Orangutan (Pongo Tapanuliensis) Within The Renewable Energy Development And Its Management Implications, Didik Prasetyo, Yokyok Hadiprakarsa, Wanda Kuswanda, Jito Sugardjito
Forest and Society
To protect Tapanuli orangutan it is essential to understand the actual situation. It has been studied 15% of its population live outside the protected area facing a density disruption due to forest conversion. Several best management practices have been created and tested for different natural concession types. Yet, the main objective to reduce the impact and increase wildlife survival is far away from the goal. To improve our understanding of the species survival within ongoing project construction, we conducted population density monitoring prior- to post-construction time frames within the hydroelectric dam project. Also, we carried out spatial analysis to understand …

Prevalence Of Sinonasal Anatomical Variations And Their Effect On Chronic Rhinosinusitis In Al-Ramadi Teaching Hospital, Ramadi City, Iraq, Raid M. Al-Ani, Ghassan M. Khalaf
Muthanna Medical Journal
Anatomical variations (AVs) of the nose and paranasal sinuses (NPS) are quite common findings on CT scans. However, their effect on chronic rhino-sinusitis (CRS) is still controversial. The objectives of this study is to estimate the prevalence of AVs of the NPS on CT scans and to assess the association between multiple versus single variant and CRS. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Al-Ramadi Teaching Hospital during the period from January 1, 2018, to March 31, 2019. We reviewed the CT scans of the patients with suggestive symptoms and signs of CRS. Out of 203 CT scans, there were …

Land-Use Changes And Food Insecurity Around Oil Palm Plantations: Evidence At The Village Level, Jajat Sudrajat, Adi Suyatno, Shenny Oktoriana
Forest and Society
Land conversion of oil palm plantations in the villages of West Kalimantan has caused drastic changes in how farmers fulfill their basic household needs. One such change affects farmers’ food security. This study aimed to explain the deterioration of food self-sufficiency at the village level due to the pressure to use residual pockets of land for oil palm cultivation. The collected evidence was analyzed through an assessment of their residual pockets of land in a single village. A case study survey collected data from July until September 2019 in the village of Batu Barat, district of Kayong Utara, West Kalimantan …

Sacred Music In Colonial Era Hispaniola: The Evangelization Of The Taino People, Tito J. Gutierrez
Student Theses
During the 15th-18th centuries, the major European religious orders; the Franciscans, Dominicans, Jesuits, and Jeronymites, journeyed to the newly colonized American territories in an attempt to convert the multitudes of natives peoples living there. Along with prayer books, crucifixes, and religious images, these missionaries brought sacred European music to American shores in an attempt to attract the native people to the Catholic faith. The use of music as a tool for conversion of native people in places such as Mexico, South America, California, and the South West United States, have been well researched and documented. However, the research of the spiritual …

Levels of sex differences for human body size and shape phenotypes are hypothesized to have adaptively reduced following the agricultural transition as part of an evolutionary response to relatively more equal divisions of labor and new technology adoption. In this study, we tested this hypothesis by studying genetic variants associated with five sexually differentiated human phenotypes: height, body mass, hip circumference, body fat percentage, and waist circumference. We first analyzed genome-wide association (GWAS) results for UK Biobank individuals (~194,000 females and ~167,000 males) to identify a total of 114,199 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly associated with at least one of …

Questioning Standards Of Evaluation In Educational Research: Do Educational Researchers Ventriloquize Learners’ Voices In L2 Education?, Anastasia A. Boldireff
The Qualitative Report
Learners are not stakeholders in their own education. Adhering to the quantitative gold standard in English as a Second Language (ESL) deprives the learner from having a voice in their learning process. This paper addresses voicelessness and ventriloquism in ESL, ventriloquism referring to the act of voicing the thoughts of another person, in this case the system overriding the learners’ experiences. This article addresses this problem, aligning itself with the Platinum standard while challenging the quantitative gold standard in ESL research. This paper offers resonance and semantic reliability as evaluative measures in educational research taken from literary criticism. The notion …

The Challenges Faced By Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations From The ’67 Referendum To The Current National Partnership On Closing The Gap, Patrick Sullivan
Nulungu Research Week
This seminar discusses three major periods of Aboriginal policy involving Aboriginal community-controlled service organisations. In the first period considered, Aboriginal people in the Kimberley were able to leave the Native Welfare period behind following the 1967 referendum that allowed the Commonwealth to fund Aboriginal progress. The limits to their liberty on missions and cattle stations were progressively removed and they entered the ‘self-determination’ era. This seminar first looks at the heyday of Aboriginal community-controlled organisations that followed from this. From the mid-70s to the mid-90s Aboriginal people across Australia took control of their own destiny through their own resource agencies, …

Southeast Asian American Students' Perceptions On Influential Faculty Practices On Belonging At A Community College, Pamela J. Yang
Southeast Asian American Students' Perceptions On Influential Faculty Practices On Belonging At A Community College, Pamela J. Yang
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The purpose of this study was to identify how faculty perceive their classroom interactions and practices influence sense of belonging for Southeast Asian American students. Research focusing on the sense of belonging in an institution has increased in the recent years and has been identified as a factor in the retention and persistence of college students. Feeling a sense of belonging is important when working with populations of underserved and underrepresented populations. The SEAA population is important because they have been lost in the shadow of the “model minority myth”, assuming to be successful in navigating higher education, while in …

Silicon Valley Sociological Review
Drawing from Smith's own works and other scholars' analysis of her theories, we create a comprehensive review of the work of Dorothy Smith, including insights from her personal and academic backgrounds and her major contributions to the field of sociology. Specifically, we examine standpoint theory and institutional ethnography with particular attention to influences from Smith's own life experiences. In addition, we recognize Smith's transformation of sociology to represent those who are excluded by traditional theories and methods. These academic contributions continue to influence scholars around the world both within and beyond the field of sociology.

The sound of Afrofuturism, like all things connected to black speculative practice, is not easily codified. In his effort to capture the meaning of black speculative practice, Dery’s definition of Afrofuturism relied on examples drawn from comics and hip hop. In some ways, Stacey Robinson’s work and career offer a living embodiment of the transformative power of both endeavors. Stacey Robinson completed his Masters of Fine Art at the University at Buffalo and currently serves as Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His art speculates futures where Black people are free from colonial influences. Stacey’s …

Betwixt And Between: Liminality In Teachers’ Lives And In The Pandemic, Sunshine R. Sullivan, Ken Badley
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
The pandemic has altered the ways educators carry out their work, having forced them to switch en masse in March, 2020 to online instruction and then to various combinations of online and hybrid instruction. Along with educational policy-makers, classroom educators and school leaders wonder when education will return to normal and the degree to which educational normal will look like it did prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. Educating during a pandemic fits the anthropological concept of liminality, of being between two states (introduced by van Gennep in 1909). After noting the origins and meaning of the concept of a liminal …

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacted a starkly unequal toll on New Yorkers of color – both in terms of the virus itself and the accompanying social and economic impacts of the pandemic. These are not separate issues. They stem from the structural racism embedded in American society. While our work begins by establishing a statistical baseline for how the virus’s unequal toll played out in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York, any analysis of these disparities that looks solely at hospitalizations and deaths misses a tremendous piece of this tragic and preventable story. Minority health disparities …

Homo Psyche: On Queer Theory And Erotophobia [Chapter 6], Gila Ashtor
Homo Psyche: On Queer Theory And Erotophobia [Chapter 6], Gila Ashtor
Literature
Can queer theory be erotophobic? This book proceeds from the perplexing observation that for all of its political agita, rhetorical virtuosity, and intellectual restlessness, queer theory conforms to a model of erotic life that is psychologically conservative and narrow. Even after several decades of combative, dazzling, irreverent queer critical thought, the field remains far from grasping that sexuality’s radical potential lies in its being understood as “exogenous, intersubjective and intrusive” (Laplanche). In particular, and despite the pervasiveness and popularity of recent calls to deconstruct the ideological foundations of contemporary queer thought, no study has as yet considered or in …

A Collection Of Early Holocene Flaked-Stone Crescents From The Northern Great Basin, Matthew T. Boulanger, G. Logan Miller, Philip Fisher
Anthropology Research
Several flaked-stone crescents from the northern Great Basin were recently identified within the James M. Collins artifact collection held in the Archaeological Research Collections, Department of Anthropology, Southern Methodist University. These artifacts are morphologically and technologically consistent with other pre- Columbian crescents reported from the region. The two obsidian crescents in the collection exhibit compositions that are consistent with obsidian from the Whitehorse/Double H source, located immediately south of where the artifacts were reportedly obtained. Analysis of the crescents for use wear suggests that they were used in a manner consistent with transversely hafted projectiles. Data reported here add to …

Touch Thee Not: Group Conflict, Caste Power And Untouchability In Rural India, Indraneel Dasgupta, Sarmistha Pal
ISI Best Publications
We investigate the impact of community power on the practice of untouchability - the avoidance of physical contact – by upper and backward caste Hindus vis-à-vis ‘scheduled’ castes (SCs) in rural India. We hypothesize that an upper or Other Backward caste (OBC) household's propensity to practise untouchability is determined not solely by its own characteristics but, crucially, also by the inter-group distribution of resources across both caste and religious divides, via political contestation over behavioural norms. Our model predicts that greater collective resource endowment (power) of SCs, or that of Muslims and Christians, will reduce the likelihood of an upper …

Dendroarchaeology is under-represented in the Gulf Coastal Plain region of the United States (US), and at present, only three published studies have precision dated a collection of 18th–19th-century structures. In this study, we examined the tree-ring data from pine, poplar, and oak timbers used in the Walker House in Tupelo, Mississippi. The Walker House was constructed ca. the mid-1800s with timbers that appeared to be recycled from previous structures. In total, we examined 30 samples (16 pines, 8 oaks, and 6 poplars) from the attic and crawlspace. We cross-dated latewood ring growth from the attic pine samples to the period …

Centering Animality In Law And Liberation: The Zoopolitics Of Reclaiming The Animal In Personhood, Paulina Siemieniec
Between the Species
Although there is widespread agreement that the property status of nonhuman animals is indefensible, the debate about how to remedy their situation is ongoing. This paper explores three possibilities for approaching the issue of legal status: (1) extending the existing concept of personhood beyond the human to other animals; (2) developing an alternative legal subjectivity for nonhuman animals that is neither property nor personhood; (3) redefining personhood in animal terms while retaining the rights-bearing significance of personhood and decentering the human from animal subjectivity in law. I offer a critique of the first two strategies and defend the third on …
