Culturally Sustaining Social Studies: Practical Applications To A High School Elective Course, Emily Thomas Jul 2021

Culturally Sustaining Social Studies: Practical Applications To A High School Elective Course, Emily Thomas

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Scholars including Delpit, Ladson-Billings, Chandler, Paris and Alim remind us that schools must be a place where students’ cultures are validated, centered, and sustained. Social studies classrooms are optimally positioned to allow students to explore issues around race, class, gender, and other forms of (in)justice. Yet while many social studies teachers wish to teach in alignment with the theory of culturally sustaining pedagogy, powerful factors make its tenets difficult to enact in the classroom. This project embedded culturally sustaining pedagogy into curriculum design for a high school Environmental History elective. Using Tomlinson and McTighe’s (2006) Understanding by Design + Differentiated …

قراءة نقدية للكتابة التاريخية حول حواضر وقصور إقليم صحراء المغرب الإسلامي, جمال عناق استاذ مساعد

Journal of Al-Azhar University – Gaza (Humanities)

Yakety Sacs: Laryngeal Air Sac Usage In Great Apes, Chelsea Trenbeath Jun 2021

Yakety Sacs: Laryngeal Air Sac Usage In Great Apes, Chelsea Trenbeath

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Except for humans, extant great apes have evolutionarily conserved lateral ventricular air sacs extending from laryngeal saccules. Humans are the only species of Hominidae that lack this anatomical feature attached to the primary vocal apparatus. As we are the only species that produces spoken language, this association has led to the hypothesis that the loss of lateral ventricular air sacs was necessary for the evolution of spoken language. However, why these sacs are conserved in all other hominids remains unclear. Computer modeling has indicated that air sacs may increase resonance properties, but there are no data from great apes indicating …

Death In Haruki Murakami’S Novels: Shadow, Soul, And Sex, Le Thi Diem Hang

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

From medieval to modern and postmodern times, thoughts about death have been among the most important subjects in literature. Among writers who have discussed death, Haruki Murakami addressed not only the notions of death and life after death but also the nature of death through existence. His point of view becomes metaphysical reflections. Through cultural semiotics, psychoanalysis, and existential theory, I show that death is associated with mythical thought and the hybrid between Japanese cultural tradition and Western existentialism. In Murakami’s novels, death represents Mono no aware and the beauty of melancholy presage. Life after death is associated with shadow, …

Redefining The Object Of Semiotic Studies, Yiqiang Jin Jun 2021

Redefining The Object Of Semiotic Studies, Yiqiang Jin

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Semiotics has long suffered a severe identity crisis, displaying confusions on four relationships. The crisis stems partly from our failure to distinguish three pairs of relata and partly from our poor understanding of the nature of an academic discipline. Semiotics is, first of all, a discipline. Like other academic fields, it should have a sound object of study and aim at an adequate theory. An excursion into psychology and the philosophy of science can reveal to us the necessary constituents of a proper object of study and of a good theory. Looking back, the history of semiotics has brought up …

“The Clementine Collective”: A Corner Store Intervention Of Clementine Fruits In A High Need Neighborhood In Staten Island, New York, Heather Butts

Faculty of Health Care & Public Administration Publications

Individuals living in underserved neighborhoods face significant barriers to getting fresh produce. It has been extensively researched that providing individuals with fresh fruits and vegetables can have a positive physical and mental impact on the lives of individuals in underserved neighborhoods and the lives of their families. Unfortunately, individuals who reside in such neighborhoods are often viewed as not being motivated to consume fresh fruits and vegetables, even where barriers to eating such foods are removed. This study aims to determine whether, in the COVID-19 era, individuals in underserved neighborhoods would consume fresh fruits if presented with them in an …

Racializing Discourses: An Exploration Of Moreno Subject Formation In Oaxaca, Mexico, Juan Salvador Sepulveda-Figuereo Jun 2021

Racializing Discourses: An Exploration Of Moreno Subject Formation In Oaxaca, Mexico, Juan Salvador Sepulveda-Figuereo

Dissertations and Theses

Processes of Black racialization in Mestizo Latin America open a space to expose how subjectivities emerge and change while in tension with broader national ideas and transnational discourses. Morenos, typically dark skin individuals of African descent, inhabit the boundaries of mestizaje, Mexico's national racial ideology which emphasizes indigenous and Spanish ancestry. As a result, regional narratives subject morenos to racialization processes that align with the historical erasure of people of African descent, effectively excluding morenos from the nation. Nevertheless, morenos incorporate themselves into the regional and national narratives through various mechanisms and (re)formulations of established discourses.

I propose a …

Negotiating With Anthropocentrism : A Case Study Of The Travelling Cat Chronicles, Kittikan Hararak Jun 2021

Negotiating With Anthropocentrism : A Case Study Of The Travelling Cat Chronicles, Kittikan Hararak

Journal of Letters

Anthropocentrism is a concept in that humans use their own criteria to judge other animals’ values and give them meaning. This concept appears in many theories and philosophies that try to formulate a clear distinction between humans and other animals. However, presently, this human-animal distinction is under question, for there are many arguments asserting that humanity cannot clearly distinguish itself from other animals. Recognizing this, animal studies attempts to destabilize the boundaries between humans and animals. Although the procedures of this field of study have been presented by many critics, there is one core procedure which focuses on the human-animal …

A Study On Creation Myths Of The Yi Nationality, Pan Lei, Kanokporn Numtong Jun 2021

A Study On Creation Myths Of The Yi Nationality, Pan Lei, Kanokporn Numtong

Journal of Letters

This study compares the similarities and differences between the Yi nationality’s creation myths recorded in the four epics, and analyzes the causes for these similarities and differences in order to understand the Yi mythological view of cosmology, nature, and human beings. Results show that: 1) The main gods in Yi mythology created heaven, earth, and natural things through magic or things in nature, which reflected the lifestyle and natural environment of the Yi at that time; 2) There are both male and female god in Yi mythology, so we can infer that the creation myths were produced in both matriarchal …

How Culture And Storytelling Can Influence Urban Development: An Ethnographic Look At The Community-Driven Revitalization Of Newtown In Sarasota, Florida, Michala Head

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When Americans think of Florida, tourist attractions often trail the initial thoughts of alligator sand chaos. Disneyworld and its neighboring parks are set up for optimal experience and consumption, the thought of a trip South along the coast for a sweltering beach day, sipping on a frozen drink in January sings to Midwesterners. For residents of these seaside cities, such as Sarasota, the experiences of the space are much more complex. Within the broader contexts of the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement following the murder of George Floyd and a global pandemic that impacted America’s marginalized populations disproportionally, …
