Deaths Of Despair In The United States, Amin Etemadifar
Deaths Of Despair In The United States, Amin Etemadifar
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Life expectancy is one of the most important indicators of public health and is an indication of overall health status in a population. Thanks to public health and medical advancements over recent decades, the life expectancy of all nations has significantly increased, and that is more true for developed nations like the United States. However, the most recent data shows the longevity of Americans has become stagnant since 2010. So the first question that comes to mind is why that is happening, and the main goal of this dissertation is to answer that question.
In order to address that question, …

Food Insecurity And Older Adults: An Analysis Of Food Insecurity Among Elderly Households In The Us During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Stephanie Alexandra Morales
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Past research has shown that food insecurity rates among the elderly have significantly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, there are yet to be peer-reviewed articles that specifically address food insecurity among the elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional study utilized a nationally representative sample (50 states and the District of Columbia, n = 29,779) using data derived from the Household Pulse Survey (HPS). One generalized estimating equation (GEE) was estimated along with bivariate analyses. The GEE revealed that Hispanics, Asians, and those who identified as other race were significantly more likely to be food insecure in comparison to …
A Philosophy Of Bilingualism: How History And Science Inform Its Ethicality And Future, Matthew James Rethorn
A Philosophy Of Bilingualism: How History And Science Inform Its Ethicality And Future, Matthew James Rethorn
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This Thesis explains the significance that bilingualism has played and should play in life. It consists of three chapters: Chapter 1 examines bilingual perspectives from different communities inside the United States; Chapter 2 presents a critical assessment of research from linguistics and psychology; and Chapter 3 explores the popular support for English-Spanish bilingualism sweeping through urban America. My first chapter highlights the interconnection of bilingualism with identity, exemplified in the Amish, Navajo, and Gullah communities. This analysis of ethnic groups represents more broadly the negative and positive experiences of bilingualism. My second chapter reflects on the validity and assumptions behind …
Metasynthesis Of Research In Mathematics Education: Foci And Theoretical-Methodological Foundations, Saddo Ag Almouloud
Metasynthesis Of Research In Mathematics Education: Foci And Theoretical-Methodological Foundations, Saddo Ag Almouloud
The Mathematics Enthusiast
In this article, I carry out a qualitative metasynthesis of six doctoral theses that were directed by me, identifying the theoretical and methodological frameworks that support these researches, and how the articulations were made between different theories chosen. I also revisit the results achieved by the studies to highlight their relevance to the Mathematics Education area. This study, although not exhaustive, provides a vision of possible dialogs of Mathematics Education (or education) theories related to teaching and learning of mathematics and the Didactics of Mathematics. The diversity of theories and the specificities of each of them confirm the idea that …

A Framework For Guiding Transformative Growth After High School Shootings, Lucienne Lunn, Karen Campion, Steven James, Gabriel M. Velez
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
For the last 20 years, gun violence has severely compromised safety, learning outcomes, social development, and psychological well-being in many high school communities. An emerging body of international research describes strategies developed to support students and staff members in the wake of school shootings. However, these protocols are typically designed to help administrators manage the immediate sequelae of these incidents, leaving survivors to handle the lasting consequences of their experiences on their own. This article presents a broad framework for facilitating long-term psychological growth that can be integrated into high school curricula. It is based on the complementary theories of …

Theses
The objective of this study is to explore the challenges and opportunities created by the abrupt shift from classroom to distance learning. This study will try to address the question of “What distance learning presents for the future of education in a post-pandemic world?” More specifically, it aims to uncover the opportunities distance education brings and the challenges that can be resolved or mitigated in the future. The study focuses on secondary and primary data to uncover and analyze the experience of professors and students of tertiary education with distance learning. Secondary research shows that distance learning provides flexibility, which …
Missing Power: Nostalgia And Disillusionment Among Southern California Water Engineers, Sayd Randle
Missing Power: Nostalgia And Disillusionment Among Southern California Water Engineers, Sayd Randle
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
California's sprawling network of aqueducts and dams is often cited as the embodiment of a high-modernist approach to resource management. But while once widely celebrated, in recent decades this infrastructural system and the institutions that manage it have been the subject of growing criticism and shrinking funding streams. Based on ethnographic research among employees at several California water agencies, this article explores the sense of nostalgia and diminished power experienced by the workers tasked with overseeing these networks. These emic perspectives are frequently articulated in the form of unfavorable comparisons to an imagined past, when the workers believe that their …

On Aqueducts And Anxiety: Water Infrastructure, Ruination, And A Region-Scaled Anthropocene Imaginary, Sayd Randle
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This paper explores popular expectations for and meanings of the U.S. West's environmental future, as articulated through recent artistic representations of the Los Angeles's expansive water provision network. Weaving together material from participant observation and readings of creative works, I show how infrastructural imagery is used to index anxieties about a future of water scarcity. Presenting familiar, currently functional water infrastructures as ruins-in-the-making, these artists use the physical stuff of water provision networks to advance critiques of longstanding modes of development and the material basis of urban-rural relations in the U.S. West. Doing so, these imagined ruins draw the global-scale …
Analyzing The Consistency Of Scoring Porotic Hyperostosis From 3d Scans, Carson Rouse
Analyzing The Consistency Of Scoring Porotic Hyperostosis From 3d Scans, Carson Rouse
Master's Theses
The use of 3D scans is becoming more and more common in the field of bioarchaeology. They alleviate the need to travel, allow for larger sample sizes, and can help preserve bones with pathologies on them which make them more fragile. Though there are major benefits with using 3D scanning of human remains, there is a lack of studies which examine whether or not traditional pathology scoring methods can be used to consistently gather the same data from these 3D scans. This project examines how consistently six researchers of varying experience levels scored porotic hyperostosis from 25 3D scans on …
Subadult Cortical Bone Analysis As An Indicator Of Childhood Health Status Among The Tipu Maya Population, Jaime Thomas
Subadult Cortical Bone Analysis As An Indicator Of Childhood Health Status Among The Tipu Maya Population, Jaime Thomas
Master's Theses
This thesis explores juvenile health at the contact Maya site of Tipu in western Belize. The associated cemetery was excavated and provided a large and well-preserved population. Although Tipu has been a focus of many studies, few studies have focused on subadults and none on their cortical development, which can allow insight into access to necessary nutritional resources.
Some 108 femora belonging to individuals aged birth to 13 years with femora previously sectioned at midshaft provided the sample. External dimensions taken included diaphyseal length, circumference, medial-lateral diameter and anterior-posterior diameter. Additionally, cortical thickness was measured at four points, and 95 …
Investigating Ancient Maya Late Postclassic Period Households And The Associated Function Of The Buildings At Santa Rita Corozal, Belize, Melissa Badillo
Investigating Ancient Maya Late Postclassic Period Households And The Associated Function Of The Buildings At Santa Rita Corozal, Belize, Melissa Badillo
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Previous archaeological research conducted by the Corozal Postclassic Project (1979-1985) focused primarily on the Postclassic Period at the site of Santa Rita Corozal in northern Belize. Through that research, Santa Rita was demonstrated as an important Postclassic Maya city which likely served as the capital of the ancient Maya province of Chetumal. Given the major reorganization that occurred in the Maya Lowlands at the end of the Classic Period, the assessment of a Postclassic site would demonstrate what, if any changes in the organization of Postclassic Period sites, took place. An extensive analysis of the associated artifact assemblages of six …
Re-Analysing Astronomical Alignments Of Potential E Group Structures To Demonstrate The Utility Of Archeoastronomy Research About The Ancient Maya, Elizabeth Karen Shikrallah
Re-Analysing Astronomical Alignments Of Potential E Group Structures To Demonstrate The Utility Of Archeoastronomy Research About The Ancient Maya, Elizabeth Karen Shikrallah
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
There has been much study of Maya astronomy and the relationship and/or manifestation of astronomy within architecture and other aspects of Maya material culture. Despite this, there is little agreement about the commonalities and variation in potential astronomical representation across sites and regions as it is difficult to compare sites to determine whether spatial patterning exists between similar building classifications. Also, it can be difficult to understand and pursue archeoastronomy research due to the jargon and methodology employed. This thesis provides an updated dataset that shows the utility of pursuing archeoastronomy research about the ancient Maya. Combining archaeological and archeoastronomical …
“I Try Not To Eat No Food ’Cause I Don’T Really Have That Much”: Investigating Food System Policies And Institutions That Could Best Address Food Insecurity In Pickens County, Sc, Cassius Hossfeld
All Theses
Food insecurity refers to the inability to access enough food, and enough quality food, to live an active and healthy life (USDA 2019a). In 2019, the U.S. food insecurity rate was approximately 10.5% (USDA 2019a). However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic these national rates increased to at least a peak of 13.9% in 2020 (Feeding America 2021). There are national, state, and local policies, programs, and food systems that aim to address food insecurity (each having varying degrees of success). The context of this thesis focuses specifically on Pickens County, SC. A relatively large county in the Upstate and Appalachia …
Examining The Types Of Capital Benefits Afforded To Low-Income Individuals By Adult Financial Literacy Programs, Dustin Tyler Love
Examining The Types Of Capital Benefits Afforded To Low-Income Individuals By Adult Financial Literacy Programs, Dustin Tyler Love
All Theses
This paper explores the capital benefits derived from financial literacy programs and used as a means of poverty alleviation. Specifically, this paper focuses on cultural, social, and human capital. Examining financial literacy through the lens of capital allows one to explore how financial literacy is achieved through capital development. Unfortunately, access to this capital is limited and controlled by our social institutions. In conducting nine semi-structured interviews with coaches and participants of two separate financial literacy programs, findings show that participants do derive all three forms of capital. However, social capital and the fictive kinship relationships that were developed as …
Spaces Of Time: An Archaeological Perspective On The Deborah Newman Homesite, Gary L. Ellis
Spaces Of Time: An Archaeological Perspective On The Deborah Newman Homesite, Gary L. Ellis
Graduate Masters Theses
This thesis serves as an archaeological perspective of a Nipmuc family and their land at Hassanamisco, combining documentary and archival research with archaeological, environmental, and conservational methods. Hassanamisco was the third Indigenous community in New England to accept the teachings of John Eliot during the mid-17th century. In 1727, seven Nipmuc families sold portions of their land in what is today Grafton, MA to 40 English families. Deborah Newman was the granddaughter of one of the original Nipmuc proprietors from this sale of ancestral Hassanamisco land, and through her grandfather’s claim she held rights to land and monetary compensation from …
Non-Governmental Organizations And Rural Development In Andhra: Challenging Or Reinforcing Social Hierarchies?, Anusha Chaitanya
Non-Governmental Organizations And Rural Development In Andhra: Challenging Or Reinforcing Social Hierarchies?, Anusha Chaitanya
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
This research examines how non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working on rural development in Andhra are structured to challenge or reinforce existing hierarchies in the society based on caste and gender, by focusing on NGO leadership. The right to equality as a fundamental right in the Constitution of India recognizes forms of inequality based on caste and gender. This right is significant to note because while most studies on NGOs focus on poverty as the central problem in a neo-liberal state (Dempsey, 2009; Fisher, 1997; Mercer, 2002; Tembo, 2003), they remain incomplete without considering socio-economic factors. These factors not only affect the …
In The Presence Of Evil: Demonic Perception Narratives, Victoria Jaye
In The Presence Of Evil: Demonic Perception Narratives, Victoria Jaye
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
I offer a new classification system for organizing, understanding, and validating the inhuman demonic encounter by organizing it through the senses the experience is activating. A demonic or inhuman spirit, which can be used interchangeably, is a spirit in that they exist without bodies, possess abilities greater than that of humans (rendering them inhuman), are hyperintelligent, react negatively to Christian religious iconography, and are malevolent in their behavior towards humans.
The system I have created is organized by the sensory perceptions of the narrative (i.e. sight, sound, smell, and feeling of the demonic presence) then is divided further by the …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative study examined the retrospective experiences of seven African American/Black (AA/Black) women who graduated from a Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) doctoral program, accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The purpose of the study was to investigate ancestral links to their persistence. This study obtained data from semi-structured individual interviews, a focus group, and PhotoVoice pursuit. Through these different methods of data collection, the validity of the study was increased. The research problem identified was that the CES doctoral degree attrition rate remains stagnated (approximately 50%) and the rate for AA/Black women …
The Shortcomings Of Maize: Using Tipu To Assess Maize Consumption And Its Impact On Stature And Limb Proportions Among The Maya, Peter Mercier
The Shortcomings Of Maize: Using Tipu To Assess Maize Consumption And Its Impact On Stature And Limb Proportions Among The Maya, Peter Mercier
Master's Theses
A reliance on maize among the ancient and modern Maya has been reasoned to cause short statures and short legs compared to overall height. The goal of this study was to test this proposition using a sample of contact period Maya from the site of Tipu in western Belize. Long bone length data from 100 individuals were compared to that from two other prehistoric maize agriculturalist societies: the Schild site in Illinois and Pecos Pueblo in New Mexico.
Four hypotheses were tested: 1) Tipu would be the shortest, 2) Tipu would have the shortest femora relative to tibiae, 3) Tipu …

Philology And The Lived Imagination: Vico, Collingwood, And Tolkien, Reno Lauro
Mythcon
This paper endeavors to uniquely address a question proposed by Tom Shippey in a guest editorial for Mallorn issue 45. “[R.G.] Collingwood and Tolkien were both Fellows of Pembroke College for nearly a decade till 1934, when Collingwood took up a Chair at C.S. Lewis’s college, Magdalen. Did the three of them ever talk about, agree about, disagree about the subject of folktales, on which Collingwood was working and publicly lecturing in the 1930s?” (Shippey 4). In order to answer Shippey’s question, I suggest that ‘folktales’ may not be the only or best way into this investigation. While we know …

This study employed a descriptive-qualitative method, Jenkins’s (2009) participatory culture theory and Peteet’s (1996) art as a means of political resistance. This study found out that, in general, street art or graffiti in Cairo during SCAF military government era emerged in …
Refining The Nationalism: Classical “Versus” Contemporary Nationalism, Lalu Zulqarnain
Refining The Nationalism: Classical “Versus” Contemporary Nationalism, Lalu Zulqarnain
International Review of Humanities Studies
The resurgence of nationalism in the shape of neo-nationalism and right-wing political parties in Europe and the United States at the end of the twentieth century, followed by similar tendencies in other parts of the world, raises the question of why nationalism is regaining favor again. According to classical nationalism viewpoint, the nationalism term is used to conceptualize the nation-state as the modern state formation that emerged since the 18th century. Though it retains the same ambiguity as classical nationalism, the rise of neo-nationalism in contemporary politics is intriguing and increases interest in studying nationalism, which fails to distinguish between …

Prioritising Storage Practices: A New Approach To Housing Design Thinking, Elena Marco, Katie Williams, Sonja Oliveira
Interiority
Inhabitants of UK housing have more possessions than ever, whilst space for living in standardised houses is at a premium. The acquisition of material possessions, and how it affects both space and inhabitants’ wellbeing, has not previously been considered in architectural practice or housing policy research fields. This paper addresses this gap, by exploring how practising architects design for the storage of material possessions in housing. For the first time, it places storage practices at the centre of housing design thinking, by engaging practising architects in a design intervention to explore original design solutions that support inhabitants’ lives and lifestyles, …

Indonesian Journal of International Law
Indonesia as a multicultural and multi-ethnicity country has a wide Traditional Cultural Expression (TCE) which needs active protection as a cultural heritage from extinction and to provide certain economic benefits. However, a lot of elements are endangered due to the effect of globalization, lack of facilities, appreciation, and comprehension which cause erosion of values, functions, and cultural elements. This research was, therefore, conducted to discuss the implementation of TCE protection in Indonesia based on Article 38 Law Number 28 of 2014 concerning Copyright (Copyright Law 2014). It was concluded that the implementation of TCE protection is through the Draft of …
