Diminishing Opportunities For Sustainability Of Coastal Cities In The Anthropocene: A Review, John W. Day, Joel D. Gunn, Joseph Robert Burger
Diminishing Opportunities For Sustainability Of Coastal Cities In The Anthropocene: A Review, John W. Day, Joel D. Gunn, Joseph Robert Burger
Biology Faculty Publications
The world is urbanizing most rapidly in tropical to sub-temperate areas and in coastal zones. Climate change along with other global change forcings will diminish the opportunities for sustainability of cities, especially in coastal areas in low-income countries. Climate forcings include global temperature and heatwave increases that are expanding the equatorial tropical belt, sea-level rise, an increase in the frequency of the most intense tropical cyclones, both increases and decreases in freshwater inputs to coastal zones, and increasingly severe extreme precipitation events, droughts, freshwater shortages, heat waves, and wildfires. Current climate impacts are already strongly influencing natural and human systems. …

My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me., John Rosegrant
Mythcon
In this presentation I explore why Tolkien singled out for particular appreciation the Brothers Grimm fairy tale The Juniper Tree, which Tatar (Annotated Grimm 209) has called “the most shocking of all fairy tales.” In On Fairy-Stories, Tolkien described its effect on him as follows: “The beauty and horror of The Juniper Tree…with its exquisite and tragic beginning, the abominable cannibal stew, the gruesome bones, the gay and vengeful bird-spirit coming out of a mist that rose from the tree, has remained with me since childhood; and yet always the chief flavor of that tale lingering in …
Litigating For Legality: Nature Conservation, Commercial Fisheries And Disputed Territoriality In Ukraine’S Danube Delta, Tanya Richardson
Litigating For Legality: Nature Conservation, Commercial Fisheries And Disputed Territoriality In Ukraine’S Danube Delta, Tanya Richardson
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Between 2014 and 2016 Ukraine’s Danube Biosphere Reserve (DBR) administrators devoted extensive time to lawsuits in which they defended the legality of commercial fisheries in reserve territory. Two cases are discussed in order to examine what impact litigation had and why administrators pursued litigation when dominant accounts of law in Ukraine suggest that avoiding the courts might be a more likely response. It analyzes court documents and interviews gathered during anthropological research about nature conservation in the Danube Delta by combining insights from political ecology, agrarian studies, and socio-legal scholarship on Ukraine. Even though administrators lost their cases and had …

Maya archaeologists have long been interested in understanding ancient diets because they provide information about broad-scale economic and societal transformations. Though paleodietary studies have primarily relied on stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopic analyses of human bone collagen to document the types of food people consumed, stable sulfur (δ34S) isotope analysis can potentially provide valuable data to identify terrestrial, freshwater, or marine/coastal food sources, as well as determine human mobility and migration patterns. Here we assess applications of δ34S for investigating Maya diet and migration through stable isotope analyses of human bone collagen (δ13C, δ15N, and δ34S) from 114 …
Identification Of Cultural Differences And Their Effects On International Relations: A Novel Approach, Stephen W. Jones
Identification Of Cultural Differences And Their Effects On International Relations: A Novel Approach, Stephen W. Jones
Dissertations
International Relations suffers from underspecified treatments of culture that risk reifying, essentializing, or ignoring the effects of cultural differences in the conduct of relationships between states. Following a review of the development of the culture concept, this interpretivist, epistemologically critical realist, dissertation introduces intercultural adaptive frameshifting from the intercultural communication literature. To assess whether culture has effect within an epistemic community, four frameworks are evaluated within a non-IR field (global Christian reasoning). Speech act theory is used to assess meaningful affect through illocutionary and/or perlocutionary divergence based on cultural difference.
Following the findings that such cultural differences do in fact …

Mythcon 51 - A Virtual “Halfling” Mythcon, The Mythopoeic Society
Mythcon Programs
Nothing “halfling” about it in the end, this year we are presenting fifty papers, panels, roundtables, and alternative programming for your Mythopoeic enjoyment. 2020 was a rough year for literally the whole world, and not just because we had to reschedule Mythcon 51. Many of us found ourselves turning to our favorite books for solace, not just academic interest, in the past year. We never could have expected to be hosting Mythcon 51 virtually, but already I’m thrilled about the silver linings that a virtual conference brings:
- Greater international attendance, with presenters and attendees from all over the world!
- Reduced …

Ethnomodelling As A Glocalization Process Of Mathematical Practices Through Cultural Dynamism, Daniel Clark Orey, Milton Rosa
Ethnomodelling As A Glocalization Process Of Mathematical Practices Through Cultural Dynamism, Daniel Clark Orey, Milton Rosa
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Ethnomodelling can be considered as the association between ethnomathematics and mathematical modelling that enables members of distinct cultural groups to perceive a different reality in relation to the nature of mathematical knowledge. It also provides insights into many diverse forms of mathematics developed locally. Thus, ethnomodelling is defined as the study of mathematical phenomena that adds cultural components to the modelling process. The development of this connection is conducted through three cultural approaches: local, global, and glocal, which are used in the conduction of ethnomodelling investigations that aim to work against colonialism in order to value and respect sociocultural diversity …

Exploring Generational Difference Of Acculturation, Ethnic Identity And Racial Identity In Liberian Immigrants And Their Children Living In The United States, Breezie J. Gibson
Dissertations
Prior literature on immigrants has focused on the impact of acculturation for groups such as Asians and Hispanic or Latinx immigrants (Orjiako & So, 2014; Sall, 2019). Compared to these two groups, the literature on Black immigrants’ experience of acculturation is scarce. In addition to the minimum visibility of Black immigrants in the acculturation literature, there is also limited knowledge relating to differences in the ethnic identity and racial identity of Black immigrants because these immigrants are often grouped monolithically with minimum attention to their diverse countries of origin. Understanding the influence of acculturation, ethnicity, and race is important because …
Twenty Years Of Land Use And The Impact Of Nitrate, E. Coli And Chlorophyll For Two Lakes In North Central Texas, Alicia Lee
Biology Theses - Archive
Clean and safe drinking water is a human right. Global, federal, and state agencies that monitor the source and quality of drinking water are limited in power and oversight. Historically, human groups have replaced wetland habitat with cropland, disregarding the abundance of resources. To mediate the loss, human constructed artificial wetlands aid in cleaning natural water ways. In chapter one, four floating wetland structures were installed on Lake Arlington and historical water quality data from 2001-2018 was analyzed. Historical data included six variables: Chlorophyll α, Dissolved Oxygen, Temperature, Specific Conductivity and Turbidity. The Mann Kendall Seasonality Trend test found that …

Personnel Relationships In The Workplace, Ali S. Cetinkaya, Shafiq Habibi, Umut Yavuz
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
Contemporary organizations become more dynamic and complicated. Resources like building, machinery, culture, and people form the organization foundations. Human capital, as a core factor, directly or indirectly affects organizational outcomes. Some scholars have recently touched on relationships and some aspects of workplace relationships in the organization. But, detailed studies are required to focus on workplace relationships typology, domains of workplace relationships, the process of nurturing and maintaining relationships, and the effects of workplace relationships on organizational outcomes. In order to address the mentioned gap, a literature review method was employed to trace the typology of workplace relationships, in the organization. …

Examining Health Inequity In Ancient Egypt, Samantha Rose Gonzalez
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This thesis explores the history of medicine in ancient Egypt between the Middle and New Kingdoms, and offers a case study highlighting the use of religion and magic in healing and analyzing health inequity. I am interested in medical practices, treatments, diagnosis methods, and access to healthcare in the ancient world. I seek to bridge the gaps and help unify the knowledge surrounding ancient Egyptian medical practices and contribute to the studies in the history of medicine. I explore types of diseases that commonly affected the ancient Egyptians and how they integrated religion and magic into their understanding and treatment …

Making Their Voices Heard- The Nahua Fight To Secure Agency 1575-1820, Micaela Wiehe
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This thesis examines the evolution of the Spanish colonial legal system from 1525-1820 and analyzes the way that the indigenous Nahua people influenced, manipulated, and commanded a powerful conversation with their distant King through interactions with and within the law. By analyzing the extant Spanish colonial legal documents including court records, indigenous codices, land titles, and more, this thesis will attempt to support the theory that the indigenous people in New Spain maneuvered within the many facets of the Spanish legal system to establish themselves as powerful legal actors regaining a significant portion of the freedom taken from them during …

Publications and Research
The purpose of this application, under Articles 23.9.3 and 81.1 of the Code, is to conserve the usage of the species-group name Simopithecus oswaldi Andrews, 1916 by giving it precedence over its senior subjective synonym Cynocephalus atlanticus Thomas, 1884. Theropithecus is a common to dominant member of the extinct primate community across Africa after 4 million years ago (Jablonski & Frost, 2010) and often co-occurred with extinct humans (Hominini); fossils are also known rarely across Eurasia (Roberts et al., 2014). Most fossil samples are currently included in Theropithecus oswaldi (Andrews, 1916), which is often divided into chrono-geographic subspecies. Cynocephalus atlanticus …
Do Academic Characteristics Predict Chinese Private University Students’ Success In English Language Testing?, Feijun Yu
Education (PhD) Dissertations
Conventional language learning theory, which holds that learning outcomes are solely associated with learners’ competencies, has begun to be disputed in the dynamic learning environment. This study used English learners’ academic characteristics from the 2014 cohort in a private university in Shanghai, China, to explore the relationship between language learners’ academic characteristics and their learning outcomes in a national standardized English examination. Via the collection of extant data, 3,580 cases were included for logistic and multiple regression analysis. Results showed factors associated with English learning are the NCEE English score, the number of tests taken by students, provincial origin, gender, …

The Black Church And Guns: Assessing The Links Between Religion And Race In The United States, Ladarius Beck
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
This study examines differences in the likelihood of gun ownership among Blacks and Whites across various religious affiliations. It focuses on historically Black Christian traditions that often go unaccounted for in the existing literature on gun ownership among Christians. Data from the 1972—2018 General Social Surveys is analyzed using logistic regression models. Findings suggest that unlike the patterns of gun ownership associated with White denominations (evangelicals owning the largest share of guns), Black Christian gun ownership is heavily represented by mainline denominations. To date, scholars have maintained that evangelicalism emphasizes gun ownership while overlooking the role that gun ownership plays …
Leadership Aspirations Of Preservice Teachers In Louisiana: Does Certification Pathway Matter?, Anthony Thorn Lacaze
Leadership Aspirations Of Preservice Teachers In Louisiana: Does Certification Pathway Matter?, Anthony Thorn Lacaze
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine dispositions of teacher candidates, explore differences in leadership aspirations between traditional and alternative certification groups, and develop an unbiased predictive model for identifying future education leaders. Literature suggests that dispositions can be assessed, taught, and developed, but little is known about the link between the dispositions of teacher candidates and aspirations to seek leadership positions. Fourteen dispositions were identified through a Delphi method to correlate with educational leadership standards. They were then combined through factor analysis to develop four leadership constructs: collaborative, professional, inclusive, and modernistic.
This study found that an existing …
The Baran Ratio, Investment, And British Economic Growth And Development, Thomas E. Lambert
The Baran Ratio, Investment, And British Economic Growth And Development, Thomas E. Lambert
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Investment in capital, new technology, and agricultural techniques has not been considered an endeavor worthwhile in a medieval economy because of a lack of strong property rights and no incentive on the part of lords and barons to lend money to or grant rights to peasant farmers. Therefore, the medieval economy and standards of living at that time often have been characterized as non-dynamic and static due to insufficient investment in innovative techniques and technology. Paul Baran’s concept of the economic surplus is applied to investment patterns during the late medieval, mercantile, and early capitalist stages of economic growth in …

2020 was a good year for conspiracy theory. From COVID denialism to QAnon, the usual cast of conspiracy influencers was joined by mommy bloggers, yoga teachers, and social media opportunists to spread disinformation and sow doubt in the American psyche across the vast network of the internet. While the news media and popular entertainment often portrays the conspiracy theorist as a paranoid quack, the reality is far more conventional. We are all conspiracy theorists, in one way or another. Each of us arrive at a conspiracy theory with unique worldviews which include our political and spiritual belief systems. We are …
