Relative And Absolute: States Of Consciousness And Turiya, Jenna Mcdonald
Journal of Conscious Evolution
This paper aims to explore the phenomena of dreaming, waking, sleeping and the witness-consciousness that is exists in and through all three states. It draws from current and past literature about consciousness, helping to build a framework for both psychological and spiritual development. It correlates the pause between the inhale and exhale to the self-evident junction between dreaming, sleep and waking states.
Nondual Writing: A Perspective On Who Owns Ideas, And A Way To Write With Greater Ease, Andrew Erdman
Nondual Writing: A Perspective On Who Owns Ideas, And A Way To Write With Greater Ease, Andrew Erdman
Journal of Conscious Evolution
The act of writing can cause great anxiety, stoking flames of perfectionism and fears of criticism, narcissistic injury, or indifference. While Buddhist teachings provide liberation from such egoic loneliness, it is not often recognized that postmodern and post-structural thought may also put the “author” and their “writing” in a less-individualized context—one in which a written work is understood to be in fact an ongoing process taking shape in interactions among writer, reader, critic, fan, and the world of literature at large. Keeping such a model in mind can help return joy to the act of writing as it poses the …
Doing Gender And Reshaping The Self: The Rehabilitation Narratives Of Tbi Survivors, Paola Tine
Doing Gender And Reshaping The Self: The Rehabilitation Narratives Of Tbi Survivors, Paola Tine
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
This article provides a review of selected studies conducted in recent years on the relationship between gender identity and recovery following traumatic brain injury (TBI) with the goal of determining whether gender constructions play a role in the lived experience of TBI survivors. The studies reviewed show that psychosocial issues resulting from perceived difficulties in doing gender can be a burden to successful recovery and that addressing these constructions can have a positive influence on long-term results. Consequently, the author argues that gender should be considered a critical element in the aetiology and management of psychosocial issues following the injury …

The Marginalization Of Social Studies In Missouri: An Analysis Of Elementary Instructional Time And High School Standardized Assessment Scores, Stephanie Lovette
The Marginalization Of Social Studies In Missouri: An Analysis Of Elementary Instructional Time And High School Standardized Assessment Scores, Stephanie Lovette
Dissertations
Social studies education plays a vital role in an evolving American society. Through social studies, students are equipped with skills to become active and informed citizens in a democracy (National Council for Social Studies, 2017a). With the implementation of the No Child Left (NCLB) Act in 2001, educational reforms have increasingly emphasized student performance in mathematics, communication arts, and science (Libresco, 2015). As a result, instructional time has been drastically shifted to these subjects (Heafner & Fitchett, 2015). This mixed-methods study was conducted to explore the impact of NCLB and subsequent federal education policies on the marginalization of social studies …
Unacceptable Agency Part I Of The Problem Of An Unloving World, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer
Unacceptable Agency Part I Of The Problem Of An Unloving World, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer
Faculty Scholarship
The Earth System Governance Project is the largest scholarly body in the world devoted to articulating governance of the Earth’s systems. It recently published a “Harvesting Initiative” looking back on the first iteration of its Scientific Plan. This paper contributes to the decolonial and constructive critique of the theory of agency in that Initiative and argues that it displays “fragmentary coloniality” especially around problematic authority relations in governance. By turning to work on “worlding,” the paper argues for radicalizing questions of authority, leading us to focus not on agency but on moral relationships—work for a sequel to this paper.
Cats And Wildlife: An Animal Welfare Perspective., John Hadidian
Cats And Wildlife: An Animal Welfare Perspective., John Hadidian
Management - General
While there is no question that outdoors cats have an impact on wildlife, the extent and significance of this impact is the subject of considerable debate. The controversy surrounding outdoor cats can be traced back at least a century, with contemporary claims of threats to global biodiversity bringing animal welfare and conservation interests directly into opposition, largely over the means of managing conflicts. The irony in this is that cat defenders and cat detractors generally agree that it is in the best interests of cats that they should be shielded from the vagaries of outdoor life. While there are practical …

The Transgressive Rhetoric Of Standup Comedy In China, Dan Chen, Gengsong Gao
The Transgressive Rhetoric Of Standup Comedy In China, Dan Chen, Gengsong Gao
Political Science Faculty Publications
Public discourse under authoritarian rule is not monolithic. Yet how popular rhetoric engages with the hegemonic rhetoric in the same discursive space remains understudied. This article examines the rhetoric of a standup comedy show in China, streamed online and widely popular among Chinese millennials, to understand how alternative views on social issues can coexist with the hegemonic rhetoric. Using critical discourse analysis, it argues that some standup comedy performances transgress the hegemonic rhetoric of positive energy without outright subversion. Comedians use subversive affirmation, self-deprecation, ambiguity, absurd fantasy, and irony to present alternative viewpoints on social issues of broad interest, such …

Elements and influences under consideration include costuming, dance vocabulary, musical instruments and traditions, gender-based stylistic differences, spheres of performance, audience member and participant demographics, and notions of authenticity in embodiment and presentation. An abridged history of the Roman is also presented, including public policies that influence the rights and lifestyle of Turkish Roman, as such factors have influenced their sense of social belonging as well as their dance and musical expressions. Romani people have experienced marginalization wherever …
Apple Production Potential In Interior Alaska Within A State Of Amplified Climatic Change, Justin Hogrefe
Apple Production Potential In Interior Alaska Within A State Of Amplified Climatic Change, Justin Hogrefe
Natural Resources
Successful apple (Malus Domestica) tree and fruit growing have been ongoing in Alaska for over 100 years. At the outset, crabapples were the only varieties produced, but as agriculturalists, orchardists, and farmers began to experiment with grafting coldhardy rootstock with scions, new cultivars began to emerge, with varying degrees of success, throughout the state. In addition to experimental cultivars, the climate began to change, with an overall warming trend emerging. Together these variables could be the winning combination to large-scale apple orchards being started in the state of Alaska. More fruit production in the state would strengthen both the small …
Human Paleoecology From The Late Glacial To Early Holocene, Tangle Lakes, Alaska, Audra J. Darcy
Human Paleoecology From The Late Glacial To Early Holocene, Tangle Lakes, Alaska, Audra J. Darcy
Anthropology
This study examines paleoenvironmental change from the Late Glacial to the Early Holocene in the Tangle Lakes region of interior Alaska to explore changes in resource distribution and impacts on prehistoric hunter-gatherer subsistence patterns in upland settings (>500 masl). In interior Alaska, prehistoric hunter-gatherer subsistence economies were organized around the procurement of large herbivores (bison, caribou, elk, and moose), which were primarily regulated by habitat availability. Changes in habitat availability altered the distribution of key faunal resources, necessitating shifts in land-use strategies. The palaeoecological record from Glacier Gap helps contextualize resource distribution within dynamic landscapes by identifying changes in …

Contributors To Reduced Life Expectancy Among Native Americans In The Four Corners States, Olusola A. Omisakin, Hyojun Park, Max T. Roberts, Eric N. Reither
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Student Research
To assess trends in life expectancy and the contribution of specific causes of death to Native American-White longevity gaps in the Four Corners states, we used death records from the National Center for Health Statistics and population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau from 1999–2017 to generate period life tables and decompose racial gaps in life expectancy. Native American-White life expectancy gaps narrowed between 2001 and 2012 but widened thereafter, reaching 4.92 years among males and 2.06 years among females in 2015. The life expectancy disadvantage among Native American males was primarily attributable to motor vehicle accidents (0.96 years), liver …

The Histories Of Hivs : The Emergence Of The Multiple Viruses That Caused The Aids Epidemics, William H. Schneider
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
This new collection of essays on HIV viruses spans disciplines to topple popular narratives about the origins of the AIDS pandemic and the impact of the disease on public health policy.
With a death toll in the tens of millions, the AIDS pandemic was one of the worst medical disasters of the past century. The disease was identified in 1981, at the height of miraculous postwar medical achievements, including effective antibiotics, breakthrough advances in heart surgery and transplantations, and cheap, safe vaccines—smallpox had been eradicated just a few years earlier. Arriving as they did during this era of confidence in …

Lehi And Nephi As Trained Manassite Scribes, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
This paper brings contemporary ANE scholarship in several fields together to construct an updated starting point for interpretation of the teachings of the Book of Mormon. It assembles findings from studies of ancient scribal culture, historical linguistics and epigraphy, Hebrew rhetoric, and the history and archaeology of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Levant, together with the traditions of ancient Israel to construct a contextualized perspective for understanding Lehi, Nephi, and their scribal training as they would have been understood by their contemporaries. Lehi and Nephi are shown to be the beneficiaries of the most advanced scribal training available in 7th century …
The Mccarrick Report As A Step In Reconciliation And Reform, Amirah Orozco
The Mccarrick Report As A Step In Reconciliation And Reform, Amirah Orozco
New Horizons
In his latest encyclical, Fratelli Tutti, Francis puts forth an understanding of conflict that helps us to frame The McCarrick Report in the larger ecclesiological themes of Francis’s pontificate. While many looked on and saw irreparable damage and risk to the reputation of the Church and its credibility, Francis saw the conflict as an opportunity for real reform. In the encyclical published only one month after the report, Francis writes that “pain and conflict transform us” (FT 226). This theology of conflict, available most succinctly in Chapter 7 of the document, is starkly contrasted to a fear of conflict. Instead, …

The Environmentalist Movement In The World And Environmental Studies In The Marketing Literature, Bilge Nur Öztürk
The Environmentalist Movement In The World And Environmental Studies In The Marketing Literature, Bilge Nur Öztürk
Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets
Problems such as environmental pollution, the depletion of the ozone layer, the melting of glaciers due to global warming, the decline in clean resources and the extinction of some species have prompted people to consider the idea of a more sustainable world. In this process, humanity is going through a mental transformation and gaining some awareness. As emphasized in this study, all crises (accidents, fi res, outbreaks, etc.) experienced worldwide have been the driving forces for environmental transformations. Environmentalist movements emerging from this orientation have also found their place in the world of science and therefore in the marketing literature. …

Thunderstorms Producing Sferic-Geolocated Gamma-Ray Flashes Detected By Tetra-Ii, Deirdre Smith, Jill Trepanier, Samer T. Alnussirat, Michael L. Cherry, Marc D. Legault, Donald J. Pleshinger
Faculty Publications
The terrestrial gamma-ray flash (TGF) and Energetic Thunderstorm Rooftop Array (TETRA-II) detected 22 X-ray/gamma-ray flash events associated with lightning between October 2015 and March 2019 across three ground-based detector locations in subtropical and tropical climates in Louisiana, Puerto Rico, and Panama. Each detector array consists of a set of bismuth germanate scintillators that record X-ray and gamma-ray bursts over the energy range 50 keV–6 MeV (million electron volts). TETRA-II events have characteristics similar to both X-ray bursts associated with lightning leaders and TGFs: sub-millisecond duration, photons up to MeV energies, and association with nearby lightning (typically within 3 km). Attempting To Resist Ontological Occupation When Designing For Scale In Healthcare, Josina Vink, Felicia Nilsson, Thiago Freitas, Shivani Prakash
Attempting To Resist Ontological Occupation When Designing For Scale In Healthcare, Josina Vink, Felicia Nilsson, Thiago Freitas, Shivani Prakash
Nordes Conference Series
Scholars have recently called out how design is complicit in ontological occupation, where one reality makes other realities non-existent. The perpetuation of ontological occupation is a particular risk when designing for scale in healthcare, as Western healthcare is a recognized carrier of modern universalist practices that threaten local ways of caring. In this research, we draw from science and technology studies and anthropology to inform a research through design study positioned within a collective effort to scaleup decentralized care models in Norway. We analyse five attempts at resisting ontological occupation through design and, by doing so, contribute with lessons for …
Counter-Framing Design: Politics Of The 'New Normal', Sharon Prendeville, Pandora Syperek
Counter-Framing Design: Politics Of The 'New Normal', Sharon Prendeville, Pandora Syperek
Nordes Conference Series
In this paper, we introduce the concept of counterframes in relation to discourses of sustainability, and elaborate on it in correspondence with participatory design practices. We present our analysis through the lens of the ‘new normal’ in the wake of the pandemic, to demonstrate and unpack the complex and conflictual nature of emergent frames and counter-frame debates, evident within the field of sustainability. The paper draws on participatory activities and interviews with social movements and grassroots organisations. We present initial reflections on the ways in which design can productively engage with and address counter-frames, as they both fill in and …

Co-Citizen Design Labs In Resilience Making, Stephanie Carleklev, Wendy Fountain
Nordes Conference Series
In this paper we share our resilience making approach for a first year design program in which we work intentionally with scale – through the subject matters of resilience, and through our learning design. We respond to the provocation of matters of scale in design to progress our design research in two ways. The first contributes to discussion of design education's remit from within ecological and existential crises, relative to expanding (design) knowledge. We then give focus to the co-citizen design lab that students conduct to illustrate how the inter-scalar relations we explore manifest through students' design action. Here we …
Value, Design, Scale: Towards A Territories And Temporalities Approach, Guy Julier, Elise Hodson
Value, Design, Scale: Towards A Territories And Temporalities Approach, Guy Julier, Elise Hodson
Nordes Conference Series
This paper presents a preliminary exploration of some of the challenges in locating and articulating value in design, such that values beyond econometrically measured ones are considered more effectively. We take value in design – in its fullest extent – to be multiple, unstable, emergent and contingent. As such, it presents numerous forms beyond financial ones that are often difficult to articulate, let alone recognise. For design, giving closer attention to the territories and temporalities of value may help in this quest. Here, rather than taking ‘bounded’ frameworks for value measurement, we propose moving with and through the design project, …
Thinking With/In The Wardrobe, Anna-Mamusu Sesay
Thinking With/In The Wardrobe, Anna-Mamusu Sesay
Nordes Conference Series
In this paper I discuss different scale-making practices related to the wardrobe. I will firstly discuss how locating a potential for more sustainable clothing futures within the wardrobe can be understood as a re-scaling project, shifting attention away from industry defined macro scales towards the micro scale where people’s engagements with their clothes are located. Based on a short vignette from my own fieldwork with five first-time mothers and their babies’ wardrobes I will then present the heuristic device thinking with/in the wardrobe, which I developed to think through different scales of abstraction found and applied to my empirical material. …

Appropriating A Dbr Model For A ‘Research Through Codesign’ Project On Play In Schools - To Frame Participation, Hanne Hede Jørgensen, Helle Marie Skovbjerg, Mette Agger Eriksen
Nordes Conference Series
On the basis of an ongoing research project on designing play in schools, the aim of this paper is to explore how a fruitful combination of designbased research (DBR) and research-through-design (RtD) can enrich both research strategies. Through a number of examples of codesign processes with pedagogues, the paper explores how it is possible practically to communicate, reflect and frame participation inside, outside and beyond research through a codesign project. By exploring ways of participation within situated pedagogical practices and ongoing experiments, the paper unfolds ways for researcher and stakeholders to exchange and challenge worldviews and everyday practices. The main …
Distributed Thinking Through Making: Towards A Relational Ontology In Practice-Led Design Research, Luis Vega
Distributed Thinking Through Making: Towards A Relational Ontology In Practice-Led Design Research, Luis Vega
Nordes Conference Series
Practice-led design research is a celebrated but debated field of inquiry. Although it offers appropriate tools to advance design knowledge through and within making, its scope remains limited to the scale of individual practice. Such a limitation hinders the possibility to account for particular design instances in relation to more general contexts. To address this issue, the paper at hand presents an exploratory literature review discussing why practice-led design research may benefit from adopting a relational ontology—i.e., a stance wherein to be is to relate. The review identifies two streams of relational thinking that exhibit potential overlaps with practice-led design …
