Reaching Out: A Publication Trend Analysis Of Scholarly Articles Discussing Graphic Novels And Reluctant Or Struggling Readers, Mary Kirkham Aug 2021

Reaching Out: A Publication Trend Analysis Of Scholarly Articles Discussing Graphic Novels And Reluctant Or Struggling Readers, Mary Kirkham

SLIS Connecting

Graphic novels combine short text and pictures to tell a story or convey information while still engaging the reader visually. This is a potentially useful tool for reaching out to struggling and reluctant readers. Struggling readers have difficulty reading and understanding what it is they are reading. Pictures allow for more context clues than just text alone, allowing for the potential for greater success in comprehension for struggling readers. Reluctant readers, on the other hand, may have more of a distaste for reading. In some cases, they are capable of understanding what they read, but they do not enjoy the …

Crossing The Threshold: An Analysis Of The Hero's Journey, Megan C. Hulings Aug 2021

Crossing The Threshold: An Analysis Of The Hero's Journey, Megan C. Hulings

Theses - ALL

The Hero's Journey is well-known amongst storytellers the world over as a useful structure to create compelling characters and engaging plots, though many see its use as derivative and uninspired. After its explosion in popularity in the 1970s, audiences have come to expect stories to hit every step of the Hero's Journey beat-for-beat.

This thesis will explore the history of the Hero's Journey, from its conception to its modern interpretation. It will examine the individual parts that can elevate this simple structure into a complex narrative. By navigating the works of both Christopher Vogler and John Yorke, this thesis will …

Contesting Erasure: The Museu Da Maré And The Right To The City In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Pamela Katia Sertzen Aug 2021

Contesting Erasure: The Museu Da Maré And The Right To The City In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Pamela Katia Sertzen

Dissertations - ALL

Rapid growth in cities of the Global South has precipitated urban inequalities, particularly the urban and social exclusion of low-income city residents. Right to the city scholars have investigated claims to urban space but have not fully considered the role of museums and the politics of memory as central to the debate about contesting erasure in low-income areas. While Latin American memory studies scholars have analyzed traumatic events such as dictatorships and civil wars in the region and memorialization practices that evolved post-trauma, they have not yet taken into account contested favela memories and their role in the right to …

Culture And Practice Within The Construction Industry In Kenya And Its Contribution To Income Inequality, Zachary Obwora Osolo

Theses - ALL

This research focuses on providing findings on the level of income disparity among construction workers in Kenya. The research has placed much of its emphasis on laborers working within the Nairobi metropolitan area and its surrounding areas, which have the largest groups of people representing construction workers in Kenya. It galvanizes mathematical principles to calculate income disparity gaps that result from economic policies and business practices in Kenya. This research seeks to contribute to the body of knowledge that can be used to establish a minimum wage for the construction worker in Kenya, by demonstrating how awareness of the existence …

Uncertainty And Reputation Effects In Credence Goods Markets, Eric Schniter, J. Dustin Tracy, Vojtěch Zíka Aug 2021

Uncertainty And Reputation Effects In Credence Goods Markets, Eric Schniter, J. Dustin Tracy, Vojtěch Zíka

ESI Working Papers

Credence-goods experiments have focused on stylized settings in which experts can perfectly identify the buyer’s best option and that option works without fail. However, in nature, credence goods involve uncertainties that complicate assessing the quality of service and advice. We introduce two sources of uncertainty. The first is diagnostic uncertainty; experts receive a noisy signal of buyer type so might make an ‘honest’ mistake when advising what is in buyers’ best interests. The second is service uncertainty; the services available to the buyers do not always work. Both sources of uncertainty make detection of expert dishonesty more difficult, so are …

Creating A Culture Change: Sector Trainings For Dementia Friendly Communities For East Central Illinois Area Agency On Aging, Genesis Marie Buendia Aug 2021

Creating A Culture Change: Sector Trainings For Dementia Friendly Communities For East Central Illinois Area Agency On Aging, Genesis Marie Buendia

Student Research – Stevenson Center

Regarding dementia, the public usually does not have a clear understanding of what it is and what it entails. People use it interchangeably with Alzheimer’s, which is not the same; and people fear it as it is part of the aging process, which is understandable but not true. Both of these misconceptions and more can be countered by implementing a dementia-friendly community (DFC). DFCs are cities that bring together different sectors (banks, hospitals, libraries, etc.) to create a cohesive network of resources, with their employees trained to interact with and bring awareness to persons with dementia (PWDs). During my practicum …

Perceptions Of Race And Ancestry In Teaching, Research, And Public Engagement In Biological Anthropology, Donovan M. Adams, Marin A. Pilloud Aug 2021

Perceptions Of Race And Ancestry In Teaching, Research, And Public Engagement In Biological Anthropology, Donovan M. Adams, Marin A. Pilloud

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The concept of race has a complex history in the field of biological anthropology. Despite increased recognition of the racist origins of the discipline, there remains little agreement about what the concept means, how it is used, or how it is discussed. The present study presents the results of a survey of biological anthropologists to investigate the relationship of biological anthropology/ists with race and ancestry. The survey focuses on the areas of research, public engagement, and teaching as related to these concepts. Results indicate that a large majority of biological anthropologists argue for the separation of race (as a social …

Juvenile Body Mass Estimation From The Femur Using Postmortem Computed Tomography Data, Laure Spake, Julia Meyers, Hugo F.V. Cardoso Aug 2021

Juvenile Body Mass Estimation From The Femur Using Postmortem Computed Tomography Data, Laure Spake, Julia Meyers, Hugo F.V. Cardoso

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Skeletal estimation methods to reconstruct the juvenile biological profile are largely limited to those estimating age, and to a lesser extent, sex. While body mass is not generally estimated as part of the biological profile in forensic investigations, this is a logical candidate for inclusion in the forensic biological profile, as it has long been of interest in paleoanthropology and several methods to estimate juvenile body mass currently exist. To explore the performance of body mass estimation for juveniles, we test the accuracy and precision of previously published panel regression formulae using two femoral measurements: the breadth of the distal …

Prior Probabilities And The Age Threshold Problem: First And Second Molar Development, Lyle W. Konigsberg, Susan R. Frankenberg, Valerie Sgheiza, Helen M. Liversidge

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Dental development has been used to assess whether an individual may be below or above an age that serves as a legal threshold. In this paper we use development of the first and second mandibular molars from a large sample of individuals (N=2,666) to examine the age threshold for minimum age of criminal responsibility. We apply a bivariate ordered probit model to dental scores following the Moorrees et al. (1963) system with the addition of a crypt absent/crypt present stage. We then use a ten-fold cross-validation within each of the sexes to show that the bivariate models produce unbiased estimates …

Navigating Identity: The Intersection Of Social And Biological Identity From The Wwii Battle Of Tarawa, Rebecca J. Taylor, Briana T. New, Caryn E. Tegtmeyer Aug 2021

Navigating Identity: The Intersection Of Social And Biological Identity From The Wwii Battle Of Tarawa, Rebecca J. Taylor, Briana T. New, Caryn E. Tegtmeyer

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The 1943 Battle of Tarawa resulted in the loss of approximately 1000 U.S. service members on or around Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll, Republic of Kiribati. Nearly half the casualties were accounted for following the battle. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) has worked to identify the remaining ~510 unaccounted-for service members, with successful identification of ~160 service members to date. Demographic data pulled from historical documentation of the U.S. losses indicate a relatively homogeneous population (99% White, 81% between the ages of 17 to 23 years, and only two individuals documented with a religious preference other than Protestant or Catholic). …

A New Theoretical Approach To Ancestry Estimation As Applied To Human Crania, Michael W. Kenyhercz Aug 2021

A New Theoretical Approach To Ancestry Estimation As Applied To Human Crania, Michael W. Kenyhercz

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Since Frank Livingstone proposed the idea that there are no races, only clines, in 1962, little has changed in the way that anthropologists study and, ultimately, estimate ancestry. The way in which we talk about the study of human variation may have changed--shifting away from “racial” labels and towards those of supposed ancestral origins--but the methods with which we label and analyze groups, however termed, has remained the same. In this paper, I suggest a new theoretical approach to ancestry estimation that does not rely on group labels using Howells Craniometric dataset as an example. In the suggested workflow, the …
