Philosophical Foundations Of African Women's Indigenous Knowledge For Food Security: Towards Narrative Feminist Pedagogy, Humphrey Jeremiah Ojwang, Wanjiku Mukabi Kabira, Penninah Amolo Ogada
FDLA Journal
This paper explores the pedagogical value of African Women’s Indigenous Knowledge or Food Security. The approach is narratological and takes into account oral testimonies and life-stories of women farmers in Homa Bay County, Kenya. The paper proposes African feminist epistemology as a viable approach in the pedagogy of food security and agricultural extension in rural Kenya. This is a paradigm shift which incorporates women farmers’ indigenous knowledge in formal agricultural education and extension programmes. The paradigm shift to African feminist epistemology is a response to a pedagogical anomaly where women’s indigenous knowledge has been relegated to the sidelines, with hegemonic …

Dietary Power And Self-Determination Among Female Farmers In Burkina Faso: A Proposal For A Food Consumption Agency Metric, Zoe Tkaczyk
Geography Honors Projects
While food security is traditionally defined with four pillars, there are increasing calls for an additional two (agency and sustainability) so that we may more comprehensively conceptualize all dimensions of food security. However, the challenge is that it is difficult to effectively measure agency, a person’s control over their food system. Measuring women’s agency is especially critical in Africa South of the Sahara where women play prominent roles in farming and food preparation. This honors thesis explores the feasibility of creating a metric to measure agency within food systems and gender relations using data related to food security and dietary …

The Route Of Juan Pardo's Explorations In The Interior Southeast, 1566-1568, Chester B. Depratter
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1566-1568 Captain Juan Pardo led two expeditions through the length of what is now South Carolina, through western North Carolina, and into eastern Tennessee. Both expeditions departed from Santa Elena, a Spanish outpost which Pedro Menéndez de Avilés had established on Parris Island, near present-day Beaufort, South Carolina, and which was then part of la Florida. The route which Pardo and his men followed is important both to anthropologists and historians because it sheds light on the Indians who lived along the route, and also because the northern part of Pardo’s route closely parallels a portion of the route …

The Agrarians From The Perspective Of Fifty Years: An Essay Review, Willard B. Gatewood, Jr.
The Agrarians From The Perspective Of Fifty Years: An Essay Review, Willard B. Gatewood, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the fall of 1930 Harper and Brothers, an old and prestigious northern publishing house, brought out a collection of essays by “twelve Southerners,” entitled I’ll Take My Stand: The South and the Agrarian Tradition. Described at the time as a Southern or Southern Agrarian manifesto, the collection came into existence, according to one of the contributors, as “a sort of happening”— “a coalescence of circumstances and people and conditions” unlikely to reoccur. The contributors, known as the Agrarians, were for the most part natives of the rural, small-town areas of the westernmost South, and most at some point had …
