Phagocytes Produce Prostaglandin E2 In Response To Cytosolic Listeria Monocytogenes, Courtney E. Mcdougal, Zachary T. Morrow, Tighe Christopher, Seonyoung Kim, Drake Carter, David M. Stevenson, Daniel Amador-Noguez, Mark J. Miller, John-Demian Sauer

Open Access Publications

Listeria monocytogenes is an intracellular bacterium that elicits robust CD8+ T-cell responses. Despite the ongoing development of L. monocytogenes-based platforms as cancer vaccines, our understanding of how L. monocytogenes drives robust CD8+ T-cell responses remains incomplete. One overarching hypothesis is that activation of cytosolic innate pathways is critical for immunity, as strains of L. monocytogenes that are unable to access the cytosol fail to elicit robust CD8+ T-cell responses and in fact inhibit optimal T-cell priming. Counterintuitively, however, activation of known cytosolic pathways, such as the inflammasome and type I IFN, lead to impaired immunity. Conversely, production of prostaglandin E2 …

Efficacy Study Of Selected Maize (Zea Mays L.) Genotypes Against The Asian Corn Borer, Ostrinia Furnacalis (Guenée), Yoryncita Marfori, Merdelyn Caasi-Lit, Tonette Laude

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Laboratory and screen house studies were conducted to assess the efficacy of selected twenty-six maize varieties against Asian corn borer (ACB), Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée). Hierarchical tree based on resistance parameters clearly revealed that the twenty-six maize varieties are best classified into three groups, viz. resistant, intermediate, and susceptible. In laboratory test, the varieties RCS2, RCS4, RCS5, 'IPB Var13', Bt2, Bt3, and Bt4 were consistently identified as highly resistant. Further examinations in stalk feeding assay showed that the resistant varieties had sharp decline in larval survival (LS) on the 2nd to the 5th day of larval feeding in …

Optimization Of Ethanol Production From Enzymatically Saccharified Biomass Of Acid-Pretreated Rice Straw, Muzammal Mateen Azhar, Qurban Ali, Arif Malik, Elham Khalili, Muhammad Arshad Javed, Shinawar Waseem Ali, Muhammad Saleem Haidar Sep 2021

Optimization Of Ethanol Production From Enzymatically Saccharified Biomass Of Acid-Pretreated Rice Straw, Muzammal Mateen Azhar, Qurban Ali, Arif Malik, Elham Khalili, Muhammad Arshad Javed, Shinawar Waseem Ali, Muhammad Saleem Haidar

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

The substrate of rice (Oryza sativa) straw employed in this study was procured from local market and stored in polyethene bags until needed. The study was conducted to find out the effects of process optimization of ethanol production from enzymatically saccharified biomass of acid-pretreated rice straw. The results indicated that acid pretreatment has reduced lignin content about 50%. Resultantly, pretreatment raised cellulose contents up to 52% making it suitable for enzymatic saccharification. Optimization of saccharification illustrated that parameters such as biomass, enzyme concentration, temperature, incubation time and agitation indeed affected the action of cellulase on pretreated biomass releasing …

An Evaluation Of The Hargreaves-Samani Method For Estimating Evapotranspiration Under Semi-Arid Conditions, Yusuf Aydin Sep 2021

An Evaluation Of The Hargreaves-Samani Method For Estimating Evapotranspiration Under Semi-Arid Conditions, Yusuf Aydin

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

It is suggested by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to use the FAO56-Penman-Monteith (FAO56-PM) model as the standard model in reference crop water consumption studies. However, the climate parameters required by the standard model cannot be fully and reliably obtained in under developed or developing countries. Hence, the Hargreaves-Samani (HS) equation is used as an alternative to the FAO56-PM model since it can be used for calculations with less climate data. In this study, ETo-PM and ETo-HS values calculated at 8 provinces in Southeastern Turkey using the IAM-ETo software were evaluated and …

Liberty And Health, Frank Griffin Sep 2021

Liberty And Health, Frank Griffin

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review

Liberty is the essence of human nature and is necessary for optimal health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the government placed unprecedented restrictions on personal liberty in the name of public health, confining millions of Americans to their homes, forcing hundreds of thousands of businesses and parks to close, shuttering abortion clinics, heavily regulating churches, monitoring gatherings in private homes, restricting interstate travel, and shifting disease burdens onto protected populations. Personal liberty is sustenance for individual health. Medical principles of patient autonomy, patient privacy, and social justice are closely related to legal concepts of personal liberty, the liberty of constitutional privacy, …

Neurodegenerative disease (ND) is a growing health burden worldwide, but its causes and treatments remain elusive. Although most cases of ND are sporadic, rare familial cases have been attributed to single genes, which can be investigated in animal models. We have generated a new mutation in the calcium-independent phospholipase A2 (iPLA2) VIA gene CG6718, the Drosophila melanogaster ortholog of human PLA2G6/PARK14, mutations in which cause a suite of NDs collectively called PLA2G6-associated neurodegeneration (PLAN). Our mutants display age-related loss of climbing ability, a symptom of neurodegeneration in flies. Although phospholipase activity commonly is presumed to underlie iPLA2VIA function, locomotor decline …

Comparison Of Transcriptional Profiles Of Treponema Pallidum During Experimental Infection Of Rabbits And In Vitro Culture: Highly Similar, Yet Different, Bridget D De Lay, Todd A Cameron, Nicholas R De Lay, Steven J Norris, Diane G Edmondson

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Treponema pallidum ssp. pallidum, the causative agent of syphilis, can now be cultured continuously in vitro utilizing a tissue culture system, and the multiplication rates are similar to those obtained in experimental infection of rabbits. In this study, the RNA transcript profiles of the T. pallidum Nichols during in vitro culture and rabbit infection were compared to examine whether gene expression patterns differed in these two environments. To this end, RNA preparations were converted to cDNA and subjected to RNA-seq using high throughput Illumina sequencing; reverse transcriptase quantitative PCR was also performed on selected genes for validation of results. The …

In Praise Of Nonconformity, Lindsay, Ira K. Sep 2021

In Praise Of Nonconformity, Lindsay, Ira K.

Santa Clara Law Review

Exemption of existing structures and land uses from new zoning regulations is a long-standing part of zoning practice but is often regarded as an unfortunate political concession that entrenches an irrational distinction between present uses and future use. This Article provides an unapologetic defense of statutory protection for these nonconforming existing uses. Existing use protection represents a principled position that balances the interests of property owners and the interests of the public. Far from being an unsavoury political compromise, protection of existing uses is a crucial component of modern land use regulation that balances the needs of landowners for legal …

The Structural And Functional Role Of Photosensing In Rgs-Lov Proteins, Zaynab Jaber Sep 2021

The Structural And Functional Role Of Photosensing In Rgs-Lov Proteins, Zaynab Jaber

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Light provides organisms with energy and spatiotemporal information. To survive and adapt, organisms have developed the ability to sense light to drive biochemical effects that underlie vision, entrainment of circadian rhythm, stress response, virulence, and many other important molecularly driven responses. Blue-light sensing Light-Oxygen-Voltage (LOV) domains are ubiquitous across multiple kingdoms of life and modulate various physiological events via diverse effector domains. Using a small molecule flavin chromophore, the LOV domain undergoes light-dependent structural changes leading to activation or repression of these catalytic and non-catalytic effectors. In silico analyses of high-throughput genomic sequencing data has led to the marked expansion …

Artificial Night Light And Anthropogenic Noise Interact To Influence Bird Abundance Over A Continental Scale, Ashley A. Wilson, Mark A. Ditmer, Jesse R. Barber, Neil H. Carter, Eliot T. Miller, Luke P. Tyrell, Clinton D. Francis Sep 2021

Artificial Night Light And Anthropogenic Noise Interact To Influence Bird Abundance Over A Continental Scale, Ashley A. Wilson, Mark A. Ditmer, Jesse R. Barber, Neil H. Carter, Eliot T. Miller, Luke P. Tyrell, Clinton D. Francis

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The extent of artificial night light and anthropogenic noise (i.e., “light” and “noise”) impacts is global and has the capacity to threaten species across diverse ecosystems. Existing research involving impacts of light or noise has primarily focused on noise or light alone and single species; however, these stimuli often co-occur and little is known about how co-exposure influences wildlife and if and why species may vary in their responses. Here, we had three aims: (1) to investigate species-specific responses to light, noise, and the interaction between the two using a spatially explicit approach to model changes in abundance of 140 …

Nopal En La Frente: Racial Passing And The Hidden Indigeneity Of The Los Altos Region Of Jalisco, 1720-1950, Brandon Manuel Márquez

History

When people look at Los Altos de Jalisco, they typically think of this area as representing a pocket of European ancestry in a mestizaje state. Yet this ignores one huge aspect of this region: its indigenous history. Throughout the last three hundred years, the Los Altos region of Jalisco has allowed for the racial passing of many different families. This is all the more significant because many of its citizens have what many believe to be European features- mainly being light hair, light skin, and colored eyes. Because of these perceived European features, many of the Alteños believe that they …

The Conservation And Technical Study Of An Early 20th Century Opera Coat, Heather Hodge Sep 2021

The Conservation And Technical Study Of An Early 20th Century Opera Coat, Heather Hodge

Art Conservation Master's Projects

A ca. 1925 opera coat, made by Tegler, Inc. in Buffalo, New York, was the focus of a three pronged study: a structural conservation treatment, a technical study, and research into turn of the 20th century dressmaking shops. Characterization of the many components on the coat was performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, high performance liquid chromatography, multi-modal imaging, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Understanding the chemical and physical properties of various components on the coat aided in determining the treatment methodology as well as providing valuable historical context. Background research briefly discusses the coat’s prior owner, the dressmaking …

The Analysis And Conservation Treatment Of A Hand Carved Lectern, Elena Mars Sep 2021

The Analysis And Conservation Treatment Of A Hand Carved Lectern, Elena Mars

Art Conservation Master's Projects

Treating gilded furniture is a complex endeavor requiring an understanding of manufacturing techniques and current methodologies. The giltwood lectern had structural damage from a termite infestation as well as cracks and losses throughout the gilding and gesso. It had undergone a past restorations that replaced the apron, the bottom of the back panel, and the front of the proper right panel. The lectern was analyzed with different imaging technologies including radiography, UVA visible fluorescence, and reflective UVA. Other analysis were done with Xray fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform spectroscopy. Analysis revealed fabrication methods of the lectern and methods of past …

Viability Of A Florida Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma Coerulescens) Population In North-Central Florida, Dustin E. Brewer, Ralph Risch Sep 2021

Viability Of A Florida Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma Coerulescens) Population In North-Central Florida, Dustin E. Brewer, Ralph Risch

Florida Field Naturalist

Exceedingly limited breeding range, dispersal ability, and habitat connectivity tend to characterize species as at risk of extinction. A species endemic to Florida, the Florida Scrub-jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens; scrub-jay), exemplifies these characteristics, which have contributed to its alarming, roughly 90% population decline since the 1800s. To help stop or reverse this ongoing decline, land managers should communicate scrub-jay population trends to facilitate conversations about the effectiveness of respective management regimes within and between metapopulations and to identify regions in particular need of conservation focus. We report scrub-jay population survey data at Seminole State Forest (SSF) in north-central Florida between 2008 …

Evaluating Livestock Farmers Knowledge, Beliefs, And Management Of Arboviral Diseases In Kenya: A Multivariate Fractional Probit Approach, Paul Nyamweya Nyangau, Jonathan Makau Nzuma, Patrick Irungu, Menale Kassie

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Globally, arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus) infections continue to pose substantial threats to public health and economic development, especially in developing countries. In Kenya, although arboviral diseases (ADs) are largely endemic, little is known about the factors influencing livestock farmers’ knowledge, beliefs, and management (KBM) of the three major ADs: Rift Valley fever (RVF), dengue fever and chikungunya fever. This study evaluates the drivers of livestock farmers’ KBM of ADs from a sample of 629 respondents selected using a three-stage sampling procedure in Kenya’s three hotspot counties of Baringo, Kwale, and Kilifi. A multivariate fractional probit model was used to assess the …

The Slit-Binding Ig1 Domain Is Required For Multiple Axon Guidance Activities Of Drosophila Robo2, Lafreda J. Howard, Marie C. Reichert, Timonthy A. Evans Sep 2021

The Slit-Binding Ig1 Domain Is Required For Multiple Axon Guidance Activities Of Drosophila Robo2, Lafreda J. Howard, Marie C. Reichert, Timonthy A. Evans

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Drosophila Robo2 is a member of the evolutionarily conserved Roundabout (Robo) family of axon guidance receptors. Robo receptors signal midline repulsion in response to Slit ligands, which bind to the N-terminal Ig1 domain in most family members. In the Drosophila embryonic ventral nerve cord, Robo1 and Robo2 signal Slit-dependent midline repulsion, while Robo2 also regulates the medial-lateral position of longitudinal axon pathways and acts non-autonomously to promote midline crossing of commissural axons. While Robo2 signals midline repulsion in response to Slit, it is less clear whether Robo2's other activities are also Slit-dependent. To determine which of Robo2's axon guidance roles …

Verification And Validation Of Radiation Protection Factors From Monte Carlo Simulations, William J. Erwin Sep 2021

Verification And Validation Of Radiation Protection Factors From Monte Carlo Simulations, William J. Erwin

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation describes the verification and validation of methods for producing radiation protection factors (RPFs) using experiments and Monte Carlo N-Particle 6 (MCNP6) simulations. RPF validation of a steel enclosure using a plutonium-beryllium source produced a validated RPF with statistically significant agreement between neutron MCNP6 models and experiments and a gamma protection factor (GPF) with statistically significant agreement to the measured GPF. Efforts to validate more complex enclosures using the Fast Burst Reactor (FBR) yielded the first-ever direct measurements of this reactor’s prompt gamma emission spectrum and revealed irreconcilable differences between the FBR facility-provided source spectrum and spectrometer measurements, resulting …

Development Of A Pavement Evaluation Tool Using Aerial Imagery And Deep Learning, Yuhan Jiang, Sisi Han, Yong Bai

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper presents the research results of using Google Earth imagery for visual condition surveying of highway pavement in the United States. A screenshot tool is developed to automatically track the highway for collecting end-to-end images and Global Position System (GPS). A highway segmentation tool based on a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) is developed to segment the collected highway images into the predefined object categories, where the cracks are identified and labeled in each small patch of the overlapping assembled label-image prediction. Then, the longitudinal cracks and transverse cracks are detected using the x-gradient and y-gradient from the Sobel …
