Background: Characterization of allergic responses to cockroach (CR), a common aeroallergen associated with asthma, has focused mainly on IgE reactivity, but little is known about T cell responses, particularly in children. We conducted a functional evaluation of CR allergen-specific T cell reactivity in a cohort of CR allergic children with asthma.
Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were obtained from 71 children, with mild-to-moderate asthma who were enrolled in a CR immunotherapy (IT) clinical trial, prior to treatment initiation. PBMC were stimulated with peptide pools derived from 11 CR allergens, and CD4+ T cell responses assessed by intracellular cytokine staining. …

Preparation And In Vitro/In Vivo Evaluation Of Orally Disintegrating/Modified-Release Praziquantel Tablets, Xuemei Wen, Zhaoyou Deng, Yangfeng Xu, Guoqing Yan
Faculty and Student Publications
This study was designed to develop orally disintegrating/sustained-release praziquantel (PZQ) tablets using the hot-melt extrusion (HME) technique and direct compression, and subse-quently evaluate their release in in vitro and in vivo pharmacokinetics. For the extrusion process, hypromellose acetate succinate (HPMCAS)-LG was the carrier of pure PZQ, with a standard screw configuration used at an extrusion temperature of 140◦ C and a screw rotation speed of 100 rpm. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were performed to characterize the extru-date. Orally disintegrating/sustained-release praziquantel tablets (PZQ ODSRTs) were prepared by direct compression …

Faith-Based Social Entrepreneurial Orientation: A Case Study Of Evangelicals, Richard Clark
Faith-Based Social Entrepreneurial Orientation: A Case Study Of Evangelicals, Richard Clark
Business as Mission Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this study is the experiences of eight individual evangelical social entrepreneurs within their congregations. What type of legitimacy do they seek and/or receive for? Do they sense any pressure to conform/motivations to act relative to their congregation’s values/identity? Do these relationships encourage or discourage their entrepreneurial orientation/intensity and in what ways?
The primary research question is “how does embeddedness in an evangelical faith community affect the experiences and expression of social entrepreneurial orientation and intensity for evangelical faith-based social entrepreneurs, if at all?”
The study identifies three types of congregations in terms of their relationship to the …

The Black Towns, Norman L. Crockett
The Black Towns, Norman L. Crockett
Kansas Open Books
From Appomattox to World War I, Black Americans continued their quest for a secure position in the American system. The problem was how to be both black and American—how to find acceptance, or even toleration, in a society in which the boundaries of normative behavior, the values, and the very definition of what it meant to be an American were determined and enforced by whites. A few black leaders proposed self-segregation inside the United States within the protective confines of an all-Black community as one possible solution. The Black-town idea reached its peak in the fifty years after the Civil …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
Somatic variants in TET2 and DNMT3A are founding mutations in hematological malignancies that affect the epigenetic regulation of DNA methylation. Mutations in both genes often co-occur with activating mutations in genes encoding oncogenic tyrosine kinases such as FLT3ITD, BCR-ABL1, JAK2V617F , and MPLW515L , or with mutations affecting related signaling pathways such as NRASG12D and CALRdel52 . Here, we show that TET2 and DNMT3A mutations exert divergent roles in regulating DNA repair activities in leukemia cells expressing these oncogenes. Malignant TET2-deficient cells displayed downregulation of BRCA1 and LIG4, resulting in reduced activity of BRCA1/2-mediated homologous recombination (HR) and DNA-PK-mediated non-homologous …
Orthorexia: When Healthy Eating Becomes Problematic, Courtney R. Retzlaff
Orthorexia: When Healthy Eating Becomes Problematic, Courtney R. Retzlaff
Counselor Education Capstones
Counselors must help clients differentiate between healthy eating and disordered eating. Thus, this review of the literature examines when healthy eating becomes dangerous, and in some cases, life threatening by comparing a condition known as orthorexia to identified mental health disorders. Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is defined as, “a pathological obsession with proper nutrition that is characterized by a restrictive diet, ritualized patterns of eating, and rigid avoidance of foods believed to be unhealthy or impure” (Koven & Abry, 2015, p.385). Orthorexia is not included in the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as a disorder. Even so, …

Gender And Criminal Justice Responses To Terrorism In The United States, Summer Jackson, Jeff Gruenewald, Katie Ratcliff
Research Projects
This brief summarizes findings from a recent study published in Crime & Delinquency titled "Gender and Criminal Justice Responses to Terrorism in the United States" (available at: https://doi.org/10.1177/00111287211047535 ). Using data from the American Terrorism Study (ATS), this study examine show gender varies across federal terrorism cases, how gender shapes federal terrorism case outcomes, and how combinations of relevant case attributes uniquely impact court outcomes for males and females.
Data include a sample of 2,147 defendants in terrorism-related cases across several types of legal measures: charge type, number of charges, whether or not the prosecutor references terrorism (e.g., relying on …

Bells For Bikes: Reducing Multi-User Conflict On Boise Trails, Kyle R. Davis
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
This Capstone Project is an effort to improve social perceptions toward mountain bikers and reduce multi user conflict through a social bridge building initiative which will donate bells to the local mountain bikers in Boise Idaho. It began with outreach to stakeholders to identify shared values and create a shared vision for how to approach these problems using donated bells. A fundraiser was started which could be advertised through social media by the stakeholders. In the spring of 2022 bells will be distributed directly to mountain bikers encountered on the trails by the Ridge to Rivers Rangers. The method of …
Integrative Solutions To A Common Problem, Jacob Steele
Integrative Solutions To A Common Problem, Jacob Steele
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
This project was about eliminating a potentially dangerous and costly problem in my neighborhood. Rodent infestation had destroyed my yard as well those of two close neighbors. Holes and tunnels were hazards to us and our animals, while also damaging our sprinkler systems and being aesthetically displeasing. The project utilized new research and traditional methods to provide an ethical preventative and eradicative method of rodent removal. The stakeholders’ attitudes regarding their property, safety, and pest itself, were all considered to come up with the best solution possible for our situation. No rodent was caught but mitigation of any future problems, …
