Swartbooi And Another V Speaker Of The National Assembly (Sa 38-2021) [2021] Nasc (4 August 2021), Dunia P. Zongwe

SAIPAR Case Review

In Swartbooi, the Supreme Court of Namibia failed to give flesh, blood and bones to a theory that could unify the cases that dealt with the separation of powers in Namibia. Though few lawyers would disagree with the outcome of its judgment, the Court nonetheless achieved this outcome by retreating into its legalistic shell.

At the same time, the Swaartbooi case completed a triangle that plotted all the possible relationships between the three organs of state in Namibia. After Ex parte in re: the Constitutional Relationship Between the Attorney-General and the Attorney-General (hereinafter referred to as ‘AG and PG’) addressed …

Bioart Towards A New Concept Of Identity, Heba Elaziz Elsarraff

Journal of Art, Design and Music

The speed made by science and technology in recent times, especially in biotechnology and genomics, has urged a lot of specialists in several areas, including the sectors of culture and science as well as artists, to respond to those changes. Which brought a significant cultural change changed our traditional understanding of civilization and our coping with it under the scientific and cultural amalgamation, in turn, resulted in changing the concept of art and its philosophy and aesthetics. Accordingly, a need for an artistic formulation has become urgent that could express the impact of technology on restoring the formulation of ideas …

The Loss Of Profit: The Use Of Maasai Culture For The Gain Of Louis Vuitton & Valentino, Caitlin Jeffrey

Theses

This thesis focuses on how western fashion designers, Louis Vuitton and Valentino took elements from the Maasai tribe to develop profitable collections. This thesis looks at historical instances of appropriation by western designers as a catalyst for modern designers to appropriate marginalized and indigenous cultures in the 21st century. The aim of this thesis was to look at the issue of cultural appropriation inside the fashion industry with a lens from postcolonial indigenous methods and give examples of how western designers can avoid appropriation by utilizing specific guidelines based on appreciation and inspiration.

Exchange Rate Pass-Through Into Japanese Import Prices: Evidence At Both Bilateral And Product Levels, Channary Khun, Sokchea Lim, Hem Basnet Nov 2021

Exchange Rate Pass-Through Into Japanese Import Prices: Evidence At Both Bilateral And Product Levels, Channary Khun, Sokchea Lim, Hem Basnet

American Business Review

This study investigates the degree of the exchange rate pass-through to Japanese bilateral import prices at the product level for major Japan's trading partners (US, EU, and Asian NIEs) for a period (1998:1-2010:12) dubbed as Japan's lost decade and marked by a gradual the exchange rate appreciation against the US dollar. By considering both country and product dimensions in a unified framework, this study makes one of the first attempts to analyze the responsiveness of Japanese import prices to exchange rate movement. The empirical analysis suggests a declining exchange rate pass-through to Japanese import prices at the bilateral level in …

Tattoo Recognition Technology Is Gaining Acceptance As A Crime-Solving Technique, Samuel D. Hodge, Jr., John Meehan Nov 2021

Tattoo Recognition Technology Is Gaining Acceptance As A Crime-Solving Technique, Samuel D. Hodge, Jr., John Meehan

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Tattoos offer a wealth of information gleaned through a simple visual examination. This visualization can help police evaluate the tattoo’s location, design, colors, and any other physical characteristics to identify the person captured on video surveillance. Tattoos are also helpful in identifying a corpse where more traditional tools such as facial features or fingerprints are unsuitable. Conventional databases, such as fingerprints, facial images, DNA profiles, and dental records, are of limited use if the victim or culprit does not have a profile on record. A person’s tattoos, however, are frequently recognized by many people, whether a family member, acquaintance, co-worker, …

Establishment Of Host–Algal Endosymbioses: Genetic Response To Symbiont Versus Prey In A Sponge Host, Sara Geraghty, Vasiliki Koutsouveli, Chelsea Hall, Lillian Chang, Oriol Sacristan-Soriano, Malcolm Hill, Ana Riesgo, April Hill

All Faculty Scholarship

The freshwater sponge Ephydatia muelleri and its Chlorella-like algal partner is an emerging model for studying animal: algal endosymbiosis. The sponge host is a tractable laboratory organism, and the symbiotic algae are easily cultured. We took advantage of these traits to interrogate questions about mechanisms that govern the establishment of durable intracellular partnerships between hosts and symbionts in facultative symbioses. We modified a classical experimental approach to discern the phagocytotic mechanisms that might be co-opted to permit persistent infections, and identified genes differentially expressed in sponges early in the establishment of endosymbiosis. We exposed algal-free E. muelleri to live native …

The Role Of The Filifactor Alocis Hypothetical Protein Fa519 In Oxidative Stress Resistance, Ezinne Rebecca Aja Nov 2021

The Role Of The Filifactor Alocis Hypothetical Protein Fa519 In Oxidative Stress Resistance, Ezinne Rebecca Aja

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Filifactor alocis, a fastidious, Gram-positive, obligate anaerobic bacterium, is a newly appreciated member of the periodontal community, which is now proposed to be a diagnostic indicator of periodontal disease. Its pathogenic characteristics are highlighted by its ability to survive in the oxidative-stress rich environment of the periodontal pocket and to significantly alter the microbial community dynamics by forming biofilms and interacting with several oral bacteria. Currently, there is incomplete information on the pathogenic mechanism(s) and a possible dynamic functional role of F. alocis in the dysbiotic microbial community. Because the stress response of this bacterium to the oxidative environment …

Spotted Salamander Egg Masses Exhibit A Unique Internal Microbiome In Relation To Their Environment, Elizabeth Leonard Nov 2021

Spotted Salamander Egg Masses Exhibit A Unique Internal Microbiome In Relation To Their Environment, Elizabeth Leonard

Senior Honors Theses

Microbial studies have led to various ecological and medicinal discoveries. Amphibian eggs, like those of Ambystoma maculatum, exhibit natural resistance to bacterial invasion that may be microbiome related. The purpose of this research was to sequence the external and internal microbiome of A. maculatum egg masses and compare with the environmental microbiome. It was hypothesized that the external and internal microbiome would bear more similarity to each other than the water. A significant difference was observed between the microbiome of the inside surface of the egg mass and the water but not the outside surface of the egg and …

A Preliminary Abundance Estimate Of An Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser Oxyrinchus Oxyrinchus) Contingent Within An Open Riverine System, Austin J. Flanigan, Noah G. Perlut, James A. Sulikowski Nov 2021

A Preliminary Abundance Estimate Of An Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser Oxyrinchus Oxyrinchus) Contingent Within An Open Riverine System, Austin J. Flanigan, Noah G. Perlut, James A. Sulikowski

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Abundance estimates are essential for fisheries management, but estimating the abundance of open populations with low recapture rates has historically been unreliable. However, by using mark-recapture data modulated with survivability parameters obtained from analysis of acoustic telemetry data, more accurate abundance estimates can be made for species that exhibit these characteristics. One such species is the Atlantic sturgeon, for which abundance estimates were designated a research priority following precipitous population declines throughout the 20th century. We addressed this research need in the Saco River Estuary (SRE), a system where the Atlantic sturgeon has been extensively studied using mark-recapture and acoustic …

Emirati Women Illustrators On Instagram: An Exploratory Study, Sarah Laura Nesti Willard, Urwa Tariq

CoHSS Faculty Work

Instagram has become a popular social media platform for visual expression: many Emirati youth are drawn to the platform because it is one of the most widespread social networks, allowing them to share information, pictures and personal stories. This research study will analyze a collection of illustrations posted on Instagram by a selected group of female Emirati artists by relating these posts to their social context. It employs a qualitative approach involving personal interviews to identify points of view related to the existing visual material created by these ‘avant-garde’ illustrators. The results show that a new trend of illustration stemming …
