Metabolic Responses To Prolonged Fasting In A Naturally Obese Marine Mammal, Jane Khudyakov
Metabolic Responses To Prolonged Fasting In A Naturally Obese Marine Mammal, Jane Khudyakov
Faculty Showcase
Many animals undergo fasting in order to survive during periods of severe weather, food scarcity, migration, or reproduction. While most animals decrease their metabolism while fasting, northern elephant seals fast for several months while undergoing energy-intensive activities such as molting and reproduction. Seals fuel their energy needs with large fat stores that they accumulate while foraging at sea, resembling human patients with diabetes and obesity (insulin sensitivity, high levels of glucose and fat) while fasting. While some of the hormone signals involved in fasting have been identified, the molecular mechanisms that regulate healthy metabolic adaptations to fasting in seals are …

Sabbaticals Are About Space...Sometimes Vector Space, Anthony Dutoi
Faculty Showcase
A sabbatical is supposed to be about having the space to do the research you would usually not be able to get to. My plan was to wander around in 2D spaces, selling my ideas to other groups, connecting my projects with theirs, and connecting myself with their grad students (for both short- and long-term gain). Well, my physical space became limited to that of a spare bedroom, but it was quiet. And, fortunately, I am a theorist.
I spent my pre-tenure years investing heavily in specific way of re-writing the equations that dictate how electrons behave, which should be …

A Case Study On Self-Sustainable Villages Of India, Anushka Umesh Sawarkar Miss
Journal of Environmental Sustainability
This case study is written with the purpose of understanding the main causes that led to the development of the mentioned five villages, under the guidance of Padma Bhushan Hon. Shree Anna Saheb Hazare and Padma Shree Hon. Popatrao Pawar. Earlier, these villages suffered from low agriculture output, water deficit leading to low economic output. However today, by adapting the five principles outlined in the study, they were able amplify their economic power sustainably for the whole community. Although the principles are not new, their successful implementation through ingenious techniques and leadership by overcoming usual hurdles and hindrances is what …
Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Aeration During Washing To Dislodge Microorganisms From Cucumbers And Bell Peppers, Julysa Benitez
Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Aeration During Washing To Dislodge Microorganisms From Cucumbers And Bell Peppers, Julysa Benitez
LSU Master's Theses
Microorganisms may attach firmly to produce matrices and could affect the efficacy of disinfectants. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of aeration to reduce microbial risk during washing and sanitizing of fresh produce. Bell peppers and cucumbers were spot inoculated with Listeria innocua, E. coli O157:H7, and Salmonella; after drying in the biosafety cabinet for 1h, these were washed with water or sanitized with 100 ppm of chlorine for 3 min with or without aeration. Bell pepper and cucumber samples were placed in sterile bags with PBS after treatment. Bell peppers were processed in the stomacher …

Intake And Qualitative Aspects Of Guinea Grass Grazed By Sheep Over Three Different Seasons, Willem A. Van Niekerk
Intake And Qualitative Aspects Of Guinea Grass Grazed By Sheep Over Three Different Seasons, Willem A. Van Niekerk
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of this study was to determine the influence of season on intake by sheep as well as certain selected qualitative characteristics of Panicum maximum (cv Gatton) (Guinea grass) at the mature growing stage. The lower DM content of the spring and summer grass (41.6 and 40.2%) did not hamper DOMI (48.1 and 26.7 W0.75/d), respectively. The N concentration of the spring and summer grass was well within the limit required for optimal rumen microbial production (1.8 - 2.0%). The high cell wall components of the winter grass resulted most probably in a significant lower IVDOM value …

Determination Of N-Alkanes At Different Stratum Heights In A Pasture Of Panicum Maximum Cv. Mombaça, T. C. M. Genro, L. R. L. De S. Thiago, Ê. R. Prates, M. Herrero, V. Sabatel
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The aim of this experiment was to determine n-alkane levels in the stem + leaf sheath and leaf blade components of a pasture of Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça, harvested in 20 cm stratified layers. This pasture was under rotational grazing for intensive beef production throughout the year. The grazing system was based on the use of 16 paddocks with a 2-day grazing period followed by a 30-day resting period. Profiles of n-alkanes were determined in samples harvested in three separate periods: in the middle of the dry season (August 97; PERIOD 1), at the beginning of the wet season (November …

A Simple Method For Estimating Alfalfa Fiber Content In The Field, Reuben M. Sulc, K. A. Albrecht, V. N. Owens
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Predictive equations for alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) quality (PEAQ) based on length of the longest stem and maturity stage of the most mature stem in a sample were developed and validated for estimating neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) concentrations in alfalfa. The objective of this research was to validate PEAQ with a simplified maturity scale when estimating fiber content. Alfalfa samples varying in height and maturity were collected throughout the growing season from fields across six states in USA. Observed NDF and ADF values (determined via wet chemistry) were regressed on estimated values. The estimated …
Professional Caring In Affective Services; The Ambivalence Of Emotional Nurture In Practice, Niall Hanlon
Professional Caring In Affective Services; The Ambivalence Of Emotional Nurture In Practice, Niall Hanlon
Articles
Emotional nurturance is a fundamental feature of all forms of professional caring. As well as delivering expert social, health, education, practical or personal services, good caregivers possess an other-centred disposition, are emotionally intelligent and relationally skilled, and morally caring. Despite this, the value, role, and status of emotional nurturance in professional care is ambivalent. Drawing on feminist care theory, Hochchild’s emotional labour theory, and Bourdieusian social reproduction theory, as well as diverse empirical studies, this paper identifies how emotion is marginalised and misrecognised and calls for the reappraisal of emotion in professional care work in ways that appreciate tensions, contradictions, …

Going Up Inflame: Reviewing The Underexplored Role Of Inflammatory Programming In Stress-Induced Intrauterine Growth Restricted Livestock, Zena M. Hicks, Dustin T. Yates
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The impact of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) on health in humans is well-recognized. It is the second leading cause of perinatal mortality worldwide, and it is associated with deficits in metabolism and muscle growth that increase lifelong risk for hypertension, obesity, hyperlipidemia, and type 2 diabetes. Comparatively, the barrier that IUGR imposes on livestock production is less recognized by the industry. Meat animals born with low birthweight due to IUGR are beset with greater early death loss, inefficient growth, and reduced carcass merit. These animals exhibit poor feed-to-gain ratios, less lean mass, and greater fat deposition, which increase production costs …

Men are more likely to develop cancer than women. In fact, male predominance is one of the most consistent cancer epidemiology findings. Additionally, men have a poorer prognosis and an increased risk of secondary malignancies compared to women. These differences have been investigated in order to better understand cancer and to better treat both men and women. In this review, we discuss factors that may cause this gender difference, focusing on urothelial bladder cancer (UBC) pathogenesis. We consider physiological factors that may cause higher male cancer rates, including differences in X chromosome gene expression. We discuss how androgens may promote …
Investigating Values In Discourse: Ideals And Social Plans, Luke Edward Hanst
Investigating Values In Discourse: Ideals And Social Plans, Luke Edward Hanst
Dissertations and Theses
Social scientists argue that values enable group coordination. I explore two theories of values before turning to evidence provided by Amanda Gorman's inaugural poem, "The Hill We Climb." First, the paradigm of Shalom Schwartz describes values as transsituational goals which enable groups to coordinate action and evaluate the world. I argue the Schwartz paradigm zooms out from values into categories while I need a means to zoom in to understand values in discourse. I turn to the Pragmatic Prospection paradigm to elaborate the cognitive ontology of goals and to understand the function of language. I argue that values are shared …

Alkaloid toxicities negatively impact livestock health and production. To assess alkaloid occurrences, adsorbent technologies may offer effective means to their extraction and isolation from a complex feed matrix. In this study, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were synthesized and evaluated for their specificity of binding to various ergot alkaloids. Co-polymers of styrene and hydroxyethyl methacrylate were synthesized in the absence or presence of an ergotamine (ETA) template, yielding non-imprinted polymer (NIP) and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), respectively. The influence of parameters such as pH, temperature, and initial concentration on the adsorption of ergot alkaloids was evaluated along with their application as …

As in many parts of the world, the management of environmental science research in Antarctica relies on cost-benefit analysis of negative environmental impact versus positive scientific gain. Several studies have examined the environmental impact of Antarctic field camps, but very little work looks at how the placement of these camps influences scientific research. In this study, we integrate bibliometrics, geospatial analysis, and historical research to understand the relationship between field camp placement and scientific production in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of East Antarctica. Our analysis of the scientific corpus from 1907–2016 shows that, on average, research sites have become less …
