Many theories exist attempting to explain the allure of horror films to the human psyche. None can fully explain this fascination to the horror genre. However, there are clear visual techniques used routinely in these films to produce fear in audiences. This thesis explores the application of those cinematic techniques used in horror cinema for well over a century into a virtual reality (VR) experience, The Invasion. Using a wide range of examples from classic horror films, The Invasion endeavors to show how the lessons learned from the study of horror cinema’s use of color theory, light, shadow, and sound …

Effect Of G-Csf Gene Therapy In A Microglia Model Of Stroke, Saldarriaga Esteban Velasquez Jan 2021

Effect Of G-Csf Gene Therapy In A Microglia Model Of Stroke, Saldarriaga Esteban Velasquez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Cerebrovascular events (stroke) are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Ischemic stroke accounts for ~85% of all strokes and is caused by the blockade of blood flow to a certain area of the brain, resulting in oxygen and nutrient deprivation and ultimately cell death. Cerebral ischemia induces a strong neuroinflammatory response that contributes to tissue damage and is driven by changes in the gene expression profile and phenotype of brain cells including neurons, astrocytes, and microglia. Microglia are the resident immune and phagocytic cells of the central nervous system. They rapidly respond to ischemia by migrating to the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The sunray venus (SRV) clam (Macrocallista nimbosa), is an alternative shellfish aquaculture species to hard clams (Mercenaria mercenaria) for Florida. Production of high-quality hatchery seed is dependent on diet. This study was initiated to determine an optimal live microalgae diet and test the efficacy of commercially available microalgae concentrates as partial or complete replacements for live algae. Benefits were seen with multiple algal species combinations. Both clam species achieved highest growth and survival when fed a multi-species quad-algal live diet, although hard clams performed well when fed I. galbana and C. gracilis or I. galbana and P. lutheri. Neither species …

Effects Of Anthropogenic Noise On Cognition And Growth In The Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia Guttata), Charlie Daria

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Urban noise is common in anthropogenic environments and impacts behavior and health in wildlife. Noise has been shown to negatively affect cognitive processes such as attention and memory in animals. Cognition is tightly linked with the survival of an organism and so urban noise can potentially hinder cognitive processes and the subsequent survival of the organism. I split my thesis into two experiments: (1) I tested if urban noise impacts avian cognitive performance by testing adult zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), a songbird, on several cognition tasks in the presence or absence of urban noise playback. I found that urban noise …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Florida Pompano Trachinotus carolinus are molluscivorous, greater than 70% of their natural diet consists of hard-shelled gastropods and bivalves. A specialized feeding mechanism (pharyngeal jaw) forms a crushing surface used to grind prey. In aquaculture, extruded pellets are fed and this feeding apparatus results in pellets fracturing and loss of fragments through their gill rakers. The effect of pellet form (hard vs. soft) and size on fractured pellet waste (FPW) and production characteristics of Pompano reared in recirculating aquaculture systems was addressed. No difference in FPW between the standard pellet size and smaller pellet size treatments. However, a difference in …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Research suggests spending time outdoors and with natural materials can benefit all young children across different areas of development. However, children with developmental disabilities often have fewer opportunities to engage with nature as a result of the limited understanding and negative views about nature expressed by their caregivers and educators. This study examined the effects of a professional development training package on the knowledge, perception, and application of nature-based teaching strategies of early childhood educators who teach young children with developmental disabilities. It also explored how teachers’ implementation of nature-based activities support children’s developmental outcomes. Results showed the professional development …

Effects Of Serotonin Modulation On Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase Deficient Drosophila Melanogaster, Ali Hamadeh Jan 2021

Effects Of Serotonin Modulation On Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase Deficient Drosophila Melanogaster, Ali Hamadeh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Methionine sulfoxide reductase (MSR) is an important antioxidant to help mitigate oxidative stress that contributes to age-associated neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease. In MSR deficient Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies), larvae show a developmental delay like that seen when wild-type larvae are reared on nutrient deficit culture medium. These investigators further showed that serotonin levels were depressed in these nutrient deficient larvae. The overarching aim of this study was to better understand the role of serotonin in MSR regulated physiology. Supplementing food with serotonin partially rescued the slower mouth hook movements (MHM) observed in the MSR-deficient flies. …

Effects Of Water Flow On A Wetland Macroinvertebrate Community, Chris Hansen Jan 2021

Effects Of Water Flow On A Wetland Macroinvertebrate Community, Chris Hansen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Macroinvertebrates make up a large fraction of secondary production in wetlands and are strongly influenced by hydrologic alterations. However, little is known of the effect flow has on macroinvertebrate production and community composition in wetlands. Reintroducing measurable water velocities (1-5 cm/s) to the oligotrophic (phosphoruslimited) Everglades has the potential to affect macroinvertebrate production and community structure by increasing the supply of phosphorus (P) to periphyton, changing basal food quality, and physically altering the habitat. In Chapter 2, I investigated the potential effects of flow-mediated nutrient-loading on the growth rate of herbivorous grazers, apple snails (Pomacea maculata), by growing periphyton on …

Evidence For The Independent Evolution Of Visual Perception During Seafinding By Hatchling Leatherback Sea Turtles (Dermochelys Coriacea), Samantha E. Trail Jan 2021

Evidence For The Independent Evolution Of Visual Perception During Seafinding By Hatchling Leatherback Sea Turtles (Dermochelys Coriacea), Samantha E. Trail

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Hatchling marine turtles exhibit a positive phototaxis by crawling toward the lowest and brightest horizon when they emerge from nests on the beach at night, which should lead them to the ocean (“seafinding”). Previous research with cheloniid (loggerhead and green turtle) hatchlings demonstrated that the perceptual spectral sensitivities are well below the light available on the beach regardless of lunar phase. The goal of this research was to determine the perceptual spectral sensitivities of leatherback hatchlings, the most distantly related of all extant sea turtle species. This study revealed that, like cheloniids, leatherbacks are most sensitive to shorter wavelengths (< 500 nm). However, leatherbacks were 10 – 100x less sensitive than cheloniids at all tested wavelengths. This difference in sensitivity corresponds with increased crawl duration and circling behavior under new moon conditions when light levels are lowest and the difference in radiance between the landward and seaward direction is small.

Formation, Evolution, And Breakdown Of Invariant Tori In Dissipative Systems: From Visualization To Computer Assisted Proofs, Emmanuel Fleurantin Jan 2021

Formation, Evolution, And Breakdown Of Invariant Tori In Dissipative Systems: From Visualization To Computer Assisted Proofs, Emmanuel Fleurantin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The goal of this work is to study smooth invariant sets using high order approximation schemes. Whenever possible, existence of invariant sets are established using computer-assisted proofs. This provides a new set of tools for mathematically rigorous analysis of the invariant objects. The dissertation focuses on application of these tools to a family of three dimensional dissipative vector fields, derived from the normal form of a cusp-Hopf bifurcation. The vector field displays a Neimark-Sacker bifurcation giving rise to an attracting invariant torus. We examine the torus via parameter continuation from its appearance to its breakdown, scrutinizing its dynamics between these …

G-Csf Gene Therapy For Brain Diseases And/Or Sickle Cell Anemia, Stefan Basilio Jan 2021

G-Csf Gene Therapy For Brain Diseases And/Or Sickle Cell Anemia, Stefan Basilio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Ischemic stroke is defined as a blockage or reduced flow of blood to select areas of brain tissue due to either plaque formation or buildup of blood clots in the small blood vessels. A characteristic of sickle cell anemic patients is the potential for them to experience a similar type of blockage due to the sticky nature of the sickled red blood cells as well as defective oxygen delivery to the brain. Because of this similarity, sickle cell anemia may represent a good animal research model for therapeutic intervention based on stroke models. In recent studies, Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor (GCSF), …

Gcsf Gene Therapy For Parkinson’S Disease, Zachary Lee Jan 2021

Gcsf Gene Therapy For Parkinson’S Disease, Zachary Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The kynurenine pathway plays a critical role in regulating immunological homeostasis in the brain. Evidence supporting the hypothesis that kynurenine pathway dysfunction may exacerbate progression of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s is growing. First, we investigate the effects of Interferon-γ, Lipopolysaccharide, and Interleukin-4 on several key kynurenine pathway metabolites using high performance liquid chromatography. We found that Interferon-γ had significant effects on the extracellular concentration of kynurenine metabolites in astrocytes, microglia, and macrophage. GCSF gene therapy is previously demonstrated to exert neuroprotective effects on models of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. Seven days after receiving GCSF gene therapy, A53T Parkinson’s mice were …

Intracommunity Usage Of "Nigga" In Spoken African American Language: A Corpus Study, Alexis Ciara Davis Jan 2021

Intracommunity Usage Of "Nigga" In Spoken African American Language: A Corpus Study, Alexis Ciara Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The aim of this thesis is to investigate how nigga is used between speakers of African American Language (AAL). Nigga has few detailed analyses that examine its intracommunity usage, especially regarding non-negative uses of the word. It is the center of much controversy within African American communities, particularly due to the generational divide on its racist potency, and horrific historical ties. Therefore, I ask whether in-group speakers use nigga in different contexts to convey meanings that are also neutral or positive in sentiment, and whether factors such as gender and age affect these sentiments. This thesis is a partial replication …

Interactions Of Large Benthopelagic Mesopredators With Shellfish Enhancement Activities In Florida Coastal Waters, Brianna Violet Cahill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Shellfish aquaculture “grow-out” sites for Northern Quahog (Mercenaria mercenaria) clams have substantially higher densities than the surrounding ambient environment and thus can attract local molluscivores to these areas. I used acoustic telemetry to examine potential interactions of two highly mobile ray species (cownose ray, whitespotted eagle ray) with two clam grow-out sites in the Indian River Lagoon near Sebastian, FL, where clammers have reported damaged grow-out gear. Visitation patterns of telemetered rays to these sites were compared to other reference sites in the region and modeled using local environmental data. While both species spent greater time elsewhere, I found many …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Methionine-γ-lyase (MGL) is a pyridoxal-5′-phosphate (PLP) dependent enzyme found in bacteria and protozoa that catalyzes a variety of reactions, including the γ-elimination of L-methionine (L-Met). Besides its physiological roles in organisms, MGL is also a therapeutic target for pathogenic diseases and cancer. Since MGL’s catalytic mechanism remains uncertain, a new spectrophotometric assay was validated for measuring the kinetics of MGL catalyzed reactions. Kinetic data and density functional theory (DFT) data for the γ-elimination reaction of L-Met and several other substrate analogues by MGL from P. gingivalis is reported. A direct correlation between experimental kcat values and DFT-calculated activation energies of …

Monitoring Wading Bird Colonies Using Acoustic Sampling And Regional Shifts In Wading Bird Nest Abundances In A Pulsed Wetland System, Rachel C. Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Wetland loss and degradation have led to the development of restoration programs worldwide, many of which monitor wading bird populations as indicators of wetland quality. Therefore, efficient, standardized monitoring is integral to restoration progress. I tested the use of passive acoustic monitoring to estimate nest abundances and provisioning rates in wading bird colonies and examined regional nesting dynamics in the Florida Everglades, where a long monitoring record enables analysis of nesting patterns relative to hydrologic changes. I found that call rates can serve as indices of colony nest abundances and begging call rate and timing are indicative of provisioning events. …

Confirmation Of New Crapemyrtle Bark Scale (Acanthococcus Lagerstroemiae) Hosts (Spiraea And Callicarpa) Through Dna Barcoding, Allen Szalanski

Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Crapemyrtle bark scale (CMBS; Acanthococcus lagerstroemiae Kuwana) is an invasive insect that was first discovered in the United States in 2004. The polyphagous feeding habit of CMBS has allowed it to infest a wide range of plant species beyond its primary host, Lagerstroemia. Using molecular approaches, we studied the genetic relationships between CMBS specimens and their hosts from different geographic locations. Naturally occurring CMBS infestations were confirmed on American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana L.), a native plant species in the United States, and spirea (Spiraea L.). The new infestation of CMBS found on Spiraea raises the alarm that other economically important …

Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acarina: Ixodidae), is the most abundant tick species found in Arkansas and is involved in the trans-mission of pathogens of medical and veterinary importance. When not feeding, most non-nidicolous tick species shelter in the soil and leaf litter where they may be exposed to and potentially infected with entomopathogenic fungi that reside naturally in the soil. Entomopathogenic fungi in the genus Metarhizium Sorokīn (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) have shown promise as biological control agents of ticks. Here, the first study to isolate and identify Arkansas-derived isolates of Metarhizium from A. americanum ticks is presented. We …
