"Because It Is Wrong": An Essay On The Immorality And Illegality Of The Online Service Contracts Of Google And Facebook, Preston M. Torbert

Journal of Law, Technology, & the Internet

This essay argues that the behavioral-advertising business model under which an internet platform, such as Google or Facebook, provides free services in exchange for the user’s personal data is immoral and illegal. It is immoral because it relies on addiction, surveillance, and manipulation of the user to deplete the user’s autonomy. The contract between the company and the user is immoral. It can also be plausibly argued that the contract is illegal under California law because it is contrary to good morals, is unconscionable, and is against public policy. As society becomes more aware of these moral and legal defects, …

Change In The Behaviors And Spatial Use Of Canada Lynx (Lynx Canadensis) Over Time At John Ball Zoo, Hailee Cederquist

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Felines are popular attractions at zoos across the country, even more so when young animals are involved. As such caretakers strive to ensure that their animal’s needs are met, and individuals display healthy behaviors and activity levels in comparison to their wild counterparts (Mcphee & Carlstead, 2010). However, cats, being wide-ranging carnivores, are known to be prone to stereotypical behaviors which can be detrimental to an animal’s health (Clubb & Mason, 2003). At John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids, Michigan, we observed the behaviors and spatial use of 3 Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) during the summer of 2020; an adult …

Trace-Amine Associated Receptor 1 And Vulnerability To Methamphetamine Use Disorders, Derek Tonello Jan 2021

Trace-Amine Associated Receptor 1 And Vulnerability To Methamphetamine Use Disorders, Derek Tonello

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Vulnerability to methamphetamine (MA) use is related to the genetics that mediate the aversive and rewarding effects of MA. According to the most recent research, a gene known as the trace-amine associated receptor 1 (TAAR1) seems to play protective role, meaning animals that have a functional version of the gene have very low voluntary MA intake. Our research worked with mice that have a non-functional version of the TAAR1 gene and mice that have the functional version of the gene TAAR1+/+ knocked in via the CRISPR-Cas9 method. We pharmacologically manipulated the gene and were able to show that TAAR1 receptor …
