Black Urban Ecologies And Structural Extermination, Etienne C. Toussaint
Black Urban Ecologies And Structural Extermination, Etienne C. Toussaint
Faculty Publications
Residents of low-income, metropolitan communities across the United States frequently live in “food apartheid” neighborhoods—areas with limited access to nutrient-rich and fresh food. Local government law scholars, poverty law scholars, and political theorists have long argued that structural racism embedded in America’s political economy influences the uneven development of such Black urban ecologies. Accordingly, food justice scholars have called for local governments to develop urban agricultural markets that combat racism in global corporatized food systems by localizing food development. These demands have only amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has ravaged Black communities where residents suffer from preexisting health conditions …

The concept of invasion is useful across a broad range of contexts, spanning from the fine scale landscape of cancer tumors up to the broader landscape of ecosystems. Invasion biology provides extraordinary opportunities for studying the mechanistic basis of contemporary evolution at the molecular level. Although the field of invasion genetics was established in ecology and evolution more than 50 years ago, there is still a limited understanding of how genomic level processes translate into invasive phenotypes across different taxa in response to complex environmental conditions. This is largely because the study of most invasive species is limited by information …

Deep Learning For Supervised Classification Of Temporal Data In Ecology, César Capinha, Ana Ceia-Hasse, Andrew M. Kramer, Christiaan Meijer
Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
Temporal data is ubiquitous in ecology and ecologists often face the challenge of accurately differentiating these data into predefined classes, such as biological entities or ecological states. The usual approach consists of transforming the time series into user-defined features and then using these features as predictors in conventional statistical or machine learning models. Here we suggest the use of deep learning models as an alternative to this approach. Recent deep learning techniques can perform the classification directly from the time series, eliminating subjective and resource-consuming data transformation steps, and potentially improving classification results. We describe some of the deep learning …

Much research effort has been invested in understanding ecological impacts of invasive alien species (IAS) across ecosystems and taxonomic groups, but empirical studies about economic effects lack synthesis. Using a comprehensive global database, we determine patterns and trends in economic costs of aquatic IAS by examining: (i) the distribution of these costs across taxa, geographic regions and cost types; (ii) the temporal dynamics of global costs; and (iii) knowledge gaps, especially compared to terrestrial IAS. Based on the costs recorded from the existing literature, the global cost of aquatic IAS conservatively summed to US$345 …

Visualizing Barrier Dysfunction Using Clarity, Rachel Robbe
Visualizing Barrier Dysfunction Using Clarity, Rachel Robbe
Lewis Honors College Thesis Collection
Epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease are two prevalent neurological disorders. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a factor in why there are no long-term treatments for these diseases. The transporters in the neurovascular unit (NVU), which makes up the BBB, are highly specialized, so most drugs cannot pass the barrier to treat these diseases. It is unknown why drug uptake in the BBB varies in a diseased and wild-type brain, but one theory is that there are spatial differences in the NVU. One method for examining the NVU is the CLARITY tissue clearing technique which is unique in its capability to clear …
Effects Of Sleep Fragmentation On The Progression Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Lindsay Beechem
Effects Of Sleep Fragmentation On The Progression Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Lindsay Beechem
Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, neuronal death, and profound cognitive impairment. Previous studies have indicated that increased Aβ and alterations in the daily sleep-wake cycle are early risk factors and possible predictors of AD. Acute sleep deprivation decreases Aβ clearance, and increased Aβ levels stimulate neuroinflammation and accelerate loss of neurons and synapses. Likewise, it has been shown that there are higher rates of sleep disorders in AD patients. However, limited studies have investigated whether sleep fragmentation accelerates the progression of AD pathology. This partial review will discuss experiments …

An Exploration Of Sleep Fragmentation And Sleep Enhancement In Mice, Frannie Salisbury
Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that is can be defined by amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and neuronal death. AD patients have characteristically fragmented sleep, with frequent nighttime awakenings and daytime naps. Decreased clearance of Aβ from disrupted sleep may be a contributing factor in the progression of AD. This study investigated how sleep fragmentation effected the progression of AD in 3xTgAD mice. Results showed that sleep fragmented mice had significantly more Aβ build-up in the hippocampus and thus greater progression of AD when compared to control mice. Improving sleep may be one way to reduce the …
Animating Plastics: Shinto And Environmentalism In Sayaka Ganz’S Reclaimed Creations, Erin Inouye
Animating Plastics: Shinto And Environmentalism In Sayaka Ganz’S Reclaimed Creations, Erin Inouye
Oswald Research and Creativity Competition
Sculpture artist Sayaka Ganz uses found plastic objects to create intricate recreations of nature. From the pair of horses in Emergence II to the monumental whale Nanami, Ganz’s work breathes new life into discarded plastic materials that would otherwise lay dormant in landfills and trash cans. Ganz herself attributes her attraction to working with alternative sculptural materials to the emphasis on Shinto animist beliefs engrained in her throughout her upbringing.
This presentation will explore the ways in which Sayaka Ganz’s Reclaimed Creations series demonstrate Aike P. Rots’s theory of the Shinto Environmentalist Paradigm which asserts that the “animistic” beliefs …
Characterization Of Cd45+ Primary Fibroblasts In Interstitial Lung Disease, Charles Ford Reese Iii
Characterization Of Cd45+ Primary Fibroblasts In Interstitial Lung Disease, Charles Ford Reese Iii
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The role of cells of the hematopoietic lineage in fibrosis associated with interstitial lung disease (ILD) is controversial; whether monocytes solely differentiate into macrophages that activate resident fibroblasts, or if they can also differentiate into fibrocytes (CD45+/Col I+ cells) that then differentiate into fibroblasts has been debated. By using systemic bleomycin to induce fibrosis in a bone marrow transplant and transgenic mouse models, as well as using human lung tissue from a patient with scleroderma-associated ILD, we studied the contribution of the hematopoietic lineage to the fibroblast population using flow cytometry and single cell RNA sequencing. Further, our studies revealed …
Peak Trailing Limb Angle And Propulsion Symmetry In Individuals With Below Knee Amputation, Aaron E. Embry
Peak Trailing Limb Angle And Propulsion Symmetry In Individuals With Below Knee Amputation, Aaron E. Embry
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Background: Individuals with lower extremity amputation often present with kinematic and kinetic gait asymmetries and often have difficulty achieving symmetrical walking using their prescribed prosthesis. To understand the impact of limb loss on gait measures, studies often compare individuals with lower limb amputation to healthy control participants or compare the amputated limb to the uninvolved limb while completing a specified task like steady state walking. Commonly implemented treatments for individuals with lower limb amputation are based upon the assumption that equal use of both legs (symmetry) while completing bipedal tasks (e.g., walking) would be beneficial, matching the behavior seen in …

A Small Molecule Screen To Identify A Potential Treatment For Mtdps3, Connor Jade Jocelyn Graham
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Mitochondrial DNA Depletion Syndrome 3 (MTDPS3) is the most common mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) depletion syndrome. MTDPS3 is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by a mutation in the deoxyguanosine kinase (DGUOK) gene in which a reduction in mtDNA nucleotides results in decreased levels of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). The DGUOK phenotypes vary; however, liver dysfunction tends to be consistent for all pediatric patients. Liver transplants can be beneficial; however, it’s only a palliative treatment at best, and the affected population rarely reaches adulthood. This thesis describes a high-throughput drug screen to identify a potential therapy for MTDPS3. MTDPS3 mutant hepatocytes derived from …
The Roles Of Gsk3 And Reelin In The Modulation Of Behavioral Phenotypes Related To Bipolar Disorder: Implications For The Etiology And Treatment Of Neuropsychiatric Disorders, Angel Sherpa
Pitzer Senior Theses
Deficiency of Reelin, an extracellular glycoprotein, and overactivity of GSK3, a kinase downstream of Reelin, in the brain have been associated with bipolar disorder (BD). Overexpression of Reelin inhibits GSK3 activity by phosphorylation. However, it is unclear if the inhibition of GSK3 in the forebrain is a crucial element of Reelin signaling modulating bipolar-like behaviors. To fill this gap in our understanding, my first experiment proposes to examine if Reelin-deficient mice with reduced activity of GSK3 exhibit BD-like behaviors. If inhibition of GSK3 is indeed a crucial element of Reelin signaling modulating BD-like behaviors, then Reelin-deficient mice with decreased activity …
Obesity And The Hippocampus: How Diet-Induced Insulin Resistance Contributes To Memory Impairment, Luke S. Watson
Obesity And The Hippocampus: How Diet-Induced Insulin Resistance Contributes To Memory Impairment, Luke S. Watson
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Over 93 million Americans are obese, a condition which also increases the risk for developing neurocognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Insulin is critically important for maintaining homeostasis in the central nervous system, but in order to play this role it has to be transported in from the periphery. Interestingly, peripheral hyperinsulinemia is linked to reduced central nervous system insulin. The overarching hypothesis of this dissertation is that chronic hyperinsulinemia reduces hippocampal insulin transport, thereby dysregulating insulin receptor signaling proteins and leading to memory impairment. In order to test this hypothesis, we assessed the high-fat diet mouse model in two …

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
This study examines how U.S. refugee policy changes from 2014 to 2018 affected the emotional well-being of nonprofit service providers. Elements identified by participants as emotionally significant were funding cuts, the “bans”, the unpredictable nature of policy change, and most impactful, negative political rhetoric. Emotional wellbeing was negatively affected and included an increase in stress, anger, sadness, despair, depression, helplessness, frustration, and caution. Negative impacts were also felt with regard to professional identities and to relationships with family, friends, and strangers. Importantly, impact on emotional wellbeing differed by level of organization at which the participant worked and by organizational characteristics.

In support of economic development practitioners’ efforts to devise strategies that can align with both industrial clustering and industrial diversification, this report provides a wide range of relevant measures and metrics. In addition to standard regional analysis tools like coefficients of specialization, location quotients, and growth rates, we introduce two fundamentally new measures for understanding the nature of regional clusters. These measures focus on the industries that anchor the clusters and characterize their strength and regional dominance. The former measures the share of the anchor industry’s direct and indirect requirements that could be satisfied by regional industries, and the latter …

An Economic Analysis Of Appalachian Power Industry Ecosystems County-Level Pie Supply Chain Analysis, Randall Jackson, Péter Járosi
Power Industry Ecosystem
This report describes an effort to provide for the Appalachian Region a clearer picture of the implications for the Power Industry Ecosystem (PIE) of power generating technology transitions and the geographical variations in PIE impacts. We develop and implement three measures that reveal meaningful characteristics of the PIE at the county level in terms of industry and place-based PIE dependence, changes in PIE-dependent employment, and susceptibility to impacts from a continued energy sector transition. We then use these three measures—Dependence, Impact, and Risk—to form a typology that we apply to identify and focus on counties in three identifiable categories: Hardship …
Negative Regulatory Factors In Tombusvirus Replication: Known Proteins, Novel Roles, Paulina Alatriste González
Negative Regulatory Factors In Tombusvirus Replication: Known Proteins, Novel Roles, Paulina Alatriste González
Theses and Dissertations--Plant Pathology
Although host cells are a rather rich source for co-opted host factors, lipids and metabolites, positive stranded RNA viruses vastly rewire cellular pathways and remodel cellular membranes to support viral replication. To accomplish such major changes, these viruses depend on the availability of different host factors and the ability to readily assemble viral replication organelles (VROs). Genome-wide screens and proteomics approaches with Tomato Bushy Stunt Virus (TBSV) in a yeast model host indicated that tombusviruses rely on the cellular cytoskeleton to reorganize the cellular environment of their hosts. Using temperature-sensitive (ts) mutants of beta and gamma-tubulin proteins and pharmacological inhibitors, …

New Insights On The Role Of The Mesenchymal-Hematopoietic Stem Cell Axis In Autologous And Allogeneic Hematopoiesis., Tatiana D. Zorina
College of Health Professions Faculty Papers
Cytoreductive protocols are integral both as conditioning regimens for bone marrow (BM) transplantation and as part of therapies for malignancies, but their associated comorbidities represent a long-standing clinical problem. In particular, they cause myeloablation that debilitates the physiological role of mesenchymal stem and precursor cells (MSPCs) in sustaining hematopoiesis. This review addresses the damaging impact of cytoreductive regimens on MSPCs. In addition, it discusses prospects for alleviating the resulting iatrogenic comorbidities. New insights into the structural and functional dynamics of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) niches reveal the existence of "empty" niches and the ability of the donor-derived healthy HSCs to …

Summary with Implications
Two-year study evaluated the effects of monensin on protein type, either rumen degradable or rumen undegradable, with yearling steers grazing smooth bromegrass pastures. Steers were supplemented soybean meal (rumen degradable protein) or nonenzymatically browned soybean meal (rumen undegradable protein) at isonitrogenous levels to dried distillers grains plus solubles provided at 0.50% BW. Likewise, steers were provided either zero or 200 mg/hd/d of monensin for a total of six treatments with a 2 × 3 (no protein, RDP, or RUP) factorial design. There was no interaction of monensin by protein type. Providing monensin to grazing yearlings did not …
