Adam, Eve, The Book Of Moses, And The Temple: The Story Of Receiving Christ’S Atonement, Bruce C. Hafen, Marie K. Hafen Jan 2021

Adam, Eve, The Book Of Moses, And The Temple: The Story Of Receiving Christ’S Atonement, Bruce C. Hafen, Marie K. Hafen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The authors begin by the highlighting the importance of Book of Moses research that has discovered plausible findings for its historicity, rendering it at least reasonable to give the benefit of the doubt to sacred premises — even if, ultimately, the choice of premises is just that, a choice. Emphasizing the relevance of the Book of Moses to the temple, they note that the Book of Moses is not only an ancient temple text, but also the ideal scriptural context for a modern temple preparation course. Going further, the authors address an important question raised by some who have asked: …

The Good God Hermeneutic: A Reconsideration Of Religious Vocabulary, Garrett R. Maxwell Jan 2021

The Good God Hermeneutic: A Reconsideration Of Religious Vocabulary, Garrett R. Maxwell

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Fiona and Terryl Givens once again deliver a book worthy of the comparatively wide readership they have gained within Latter- day Saint circles. Their orderly treatment of individual gospel concepts in this book can rightly be seen as a distillation and unification of their previous work, boldly attempting to awaken us from our ignorance of the sheer novelty and vitality contained in the Restoration vision of God and humanity. They convincingly argue that the historically wrought semantic baggage that comes with the most basic religious vocabulary we use must be consciously jettisoned to fully appreciate and articulate the meaning of …

Vox Populi And Vox Dei: Allusive Explorations Of Biblical And Book Of Mormon Politeias, Alan Goff Jan 2021

Vox Populi And Vox Dei: Allusive Explorations Of Biblical And Book Of Mormon Politeias, Alan Goff

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

David Gore’s book The Voice of the People: Political Rhetoric in the Book of Mormon is a welcome reading of Book of Mormon passages which engage in conversation with the biblical politeia — those parts of the Hebrew Bible that explore the constituent parts of the Israelite governance under judges and kings. Gore asserts that the Book of Mormon politeia in Mosiah is in allusive dialogue not just with the Bible but also the Jaredite experience of kingship in Ether. This allusive (intertextual) feature is present not just in the Book of Mormon but any text (Dead Sea Scrolls, New …

Ancient Sacred Vestments: Scriptural Symbols And Meanings, Donald W. Parry Jan 2021

Ancient Sacred Vestments: Scriptural Symbols And Meanings, Donald W. Parry

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In this essay Parry starts with the symbology of ritual vestments, and then discusses in detail how the ancient clothing worn in Old Testament temples are part of the rituals and religious gestures that are conducted by those who occupy the path that leads from the profane to the sacred. The profane is removed, one is ritually washed, anointed, invested with special clothing, offers sacrifices, is ordained (hands are filled), and offers incense at the altar, before entering the veil. Putting on clothes, in a Christian context, is often seen as symbol of putting on Christ, as witnessed by the …

Tamid: Zacharias And The Second Temple, Lisle G. Brown Jan 2021

Tamid: Zacharias And The Second Temple, Lisle G. Brown

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This essay follows Zacharias’ biography from entering the priesthood till the day the angel Gabriel appeared to him in Herod’s temple. After recounting the procedures to become a priest, Brown focuses on the day when Zacharias prepared to bring one of the two central standing offerings. He points out that likely, a priest would only have a once in a lifetime chance to partake in the core of this ceremony, entering the Holy Room and burning incense on the Inner Altar. Brown paints a very visual picture of this day, immersing us in the ritual of the time, a ritual …

Addressing Food Insecurity In Egypt: Towards Sustaining Food Access For All/ الأمن الغذائي في مصر نحو استدامة وصول الغذاء للجميع, Alaa Mazloum, Abdelrahman Rizk, Norhan Muhab, Zainab Asal

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

This policy paper sheds light on the current challenges that Egypt faces to ensure food access for all. In attempts to underscore the root causes of food insecurity in Egypt, this paper looks at the country’s geographical and agricultural national policies, food pricing, household expenditures on food as well as the challenges imposed on the country by climate change. These factors directly challenge the country’s ability to achieve food security for all by 2050. Although the Government of Egypt (GoE) launched pro-poor policies that aim at reducing the economic burden on vulnerable groups, the government needs to explore other feasible …

A Space Of One’S Own: Houselot Size Among The Ancient Maya, Timothy Hare Jan 2021

A Space Of One’S Own: Houselot Size Among The Ancient Maya, Timothy Hare

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This paper uses new data from lidar mapping to explore variation in the size of ancient Maya houselots. The amount of space available to households has important implications for subsistence, craft activities, social relations, and more. Comparisons of houselot data from three large cities (Coba, Mayapan, and Chunchucmil) and one rural area (southwestern Quintana Roo) show significant differences in houselot size across the four case studies. Site size has no effect when comparing across case studies although patterns of variation do emerge within the case studies. Of the major factors explored–wealth, household size, distance from site core, availability of open …

Mosquitoes Of Wisconsin: The Biology, Life History, Identification And Control, Timothy Wucherer Jan 2021

Mosquitoes Of Wisconsin: The Biology, Life History, Identification And Control, Timothy Wucherer

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

In the past 60 years, weather in Wisconsin has generally been getting warmer, and in many areas of the state, wetter (Moran et al., 2015). Long-term analysis of Wisconsin’s climate has indicated an increase in average annual precipitation, longer growing seasons, and an increase in average temperatures (Moran et al., 2015). Increases in temperatures and rain have been directly correlated with increases in vector-borne diseases such as pathogens carried by mosquitoes (Moran et al., 2015). With this, Wisconsin communities should prepare for possible increases in mosquito activity and the health and veterinary concerns that come with direct exposure to certain …

"Playing The Game": A Case Study Of Latinx Leaders In An Agricultural Youth Organization, Graciela Barajas Jan 2021

"Playing The Game": A Case Study Of Latinx Leaders In An Agricultural Youth Organization, Graciela Barajas

Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development

Latinx members of the FFA Organization are disproportionately underrepresented in leadership positions. When they do get elected to leadership offices, they oftentimes have to accept behaviors that erase their cultural identity. This study aims to find what aspects of their identity they feel they have to give up in order to be seen as a potential state or national FFA candidate. Findings include the participation of the state-officer game, joining cliques that fit the white mold, and overall, assimilation on an individual and group scale. Recommendations include systemic change for state and national FFA staff, agricultural education, and the agricultural …

Toward A Supernatural Biblical Hermeneutic, Alberto I. Bonilla-Giovanetti Jan 2021

Toward A Supernatural Biblical Hermeneutic, Alberto I. Bonilla-Giovanetti

The Asbury Journal

Many people who live and learn in the west, including Christian laity and scholars, inadvertently accept a materialistic cosmology in which the material world is all that exists, with the exception of God. This perspective is contrary to how the majority of ancient and modern people view the world. This essay seeks to analyze how this materialistic worldview is seen in biblical studies, and then proposes that biblical scholars should presuppose a supernatural worldview as a key aspect of their hermeneutics.

Monad1: Internet Archival Software, Hunter Mundy Jan 2021

Monad1: Internet Archival Software, Hunter Mundy

Theses & ETDs

Internet archival is the work of recording Internet data for posterity. Nothing lasts forever on the Internet and without archival, valuable cultural and historical websites may disappear. Tools to preserve Internet data exist but suffer from flaws that preclude them from being the universal solution to data loss. In order to address these flaws, I developed a software tool that would allow the average Internet user to archive websites they find important in a quick and easy to understand manner. The prototype tool is at a stage where it saves a website’s HTML and with continued development, can archive all …

Dance For The Soul: An Ai Choreographer, Amelia Maddox Jan 2021

Dance For The Soul: An Ai Choreographer, Amelia Maddox

Theses & ETDs

Dance is the art of translating meaning and emotion into symbolic sequential movement. This thesis aims to model such creativity in the form of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) choreographer; given a word, the AI generates sequences of movement that capture the “feel” or emotion of the word. The AI has two main components: sentiment analysis of the word and translating the inferred sentiment into body movement, the latter of which is further broken down into a classification model and a generation model. The backbone of the word analysis is handled by a pre-trained model from a third party. The classification …

Growth Patterns And The Effect Of Ph On The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) Vibrissae, Isabella Mcdonnell Jan 2021

Growth Patterns And The Effect Of Ph On The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) Vibrissae, Isabella Mcdonnell

Theses & ETDs

Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) possess highly sensitive vibrissae across the surface of their body. These structures enable manatees to detect water flow and the changes in water flow that may result from the presence of nearby objects such as other manatees. This project examined vibrissae growth rate and possible effects a changing environment may have on these structures. We monitored 40 vibrissae follicles on two captive Florida manatees over ten weeks and experimentally manipulated pH levels in tanks that contained trimmed vibrissae. To understand growth, vibrissae length at each follicle was measured periodically and mean growth rate was found …

The Crux Of Conservation: Debating Ecotourism During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Ky Miller Jan 2021

The Crux Of Conservation: Debating Ecotourism During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Ky Miller

Theses & ETDs

Like many communities and conservation organizations around the world, Monteverde, Costa Rica is struggling to strike a balance between the risks and rewards of using ecotourism as a financial resource for conservation and sustainable development, which has often suffered from a mismatch between ecotourism’s vision and practice. In this thesis, I assess how communities and conservation organizations economically dependent on ecotourism engage in debates regarding its value as a biodiversity conservation strategy and livelihood basis during the COVID-19 pandemic. I also examine how COVID-19 has affected conservation organizations’ protected area management strategies and engagement with nearby communities. By drawing on …

Evaluation Of Potential Antimicrobial Properties Of Herbal Medicines Compared To Antibiotics On Human Gut Microbes, Raian (Ryan) Counsman Jan 2021

Evaluation Of Potential Antimicrobial Properties Of Herbal Medicines Compared To Antibiotics On Human Gut Microbes, Raian (Ryan) Counsman

Theses & ETDs

This thesis evaluated the effect of modern antibiotics and traditional herbal medicines on bacteria isolated from the human gut. Antibiotics are medicines that are used on humans or animals to kill or slow down the growth of bacteria (Davies, 2017). Due to improper antibiotic usage, antibiotic resistance, the acquired ability of bacteria to avoid the antimicrobial effects of antibiotics, is becoming more prevalent (Davies, 2017). Resistance prevents antibiotics from clearing infections, creating dangerous bacteria such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, abbreviated as MRSA (Sakoulas, 2004). Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are problematic in our modern-day world (Sakoulas, 2004). When antibiotics are used incorrectly, more …

Your Turn To Role: Queer Worldbuilding In Dungeons And Dragons, Grant H.C. Brewer Jan 2021

Your Turn To Role: Queer Worldbuilding In Dungeons And Dragons, Grant H.C. Brewer

Theses & ETDs

As it now stands, Dungeons and Dragons is one of the most widely-known tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs). The game has flourished especially over the past seven years with the publication of the fifth edition, particularly among those who are LGBTQ+. In this thesis, I investigate Dungeons and Dragons’ possibility for transformation because of the ability of the Dungeon Master (DM) and the players to rewrite the story and reimagine our world, referred to as “queer worldbuilding”. I ask “How does Dungeons and Dragons support queer worldbuilding?” Drawing on theories of queer performance, I define queer worldbuilding as the processes and …

The Underwater Vocal Repertoire Of The North American River Otter (Lontra Canadensis), Victoria Dina Jan 2021

The Underwater Vocal Repertoire Of The North American River Otter (Lontra Canadensis), Victoria Dina

Theses & ETDs

As growing anthropogenic noise pollution influences aquatic species' behavior and survival, it is crucial to identify what specific marine ecology aspects are affected by human activity. One keystone species of great interest is the otter, specifically the North American river otter whose ecological role is evident in the watersheds they call home. This study provides the first quantitative assessment of the underwater vocalizations of North American river otters, Lontra Canadensis (Schreber 1777), and examines the behavioral contexts within which these vocalizations are produced. Three captive North American river otters' vocal behavior was captured using a hydrophone in conjunction with a …

A Past Informing Present: An Autoethnographic Examination Of Identity Development, Alexandra Goldberg Jan 2021

A Past Informing Present: An Autoethnographic Examination Of Identity Development, Alexandra Goldberg

Theses & ETDs

Autoethnography is an emerging method of qualitative inquiry within the social sciences. Born out of ethnography and a call for increased reflexivity in research, autoethnography incorporates the researcher as a member of the community being studied. Using autoethnographic, ethnographic, oral history, and narrative research methods, I revisit moments from my past, using an individual perspective, and attempt to situate them within broader contexts. Participant interviews, presented as dialogue, are used to provide a wider lens to my own interpretations of past events. My analysis combines my positions as researcher and participant, to consider the role of family structure, class, and …

Poikilos, Polish, The Perception Of Color, And Polychromy In Ancient Greek Sculpture, Brittany Braasch Jan 2021

Poikilos, Polish, The Perception Of Color, And Polychromy In Ancient Greek Sculpture, Brittany Braasch

Theses & ETDs

The history of polychromy reveals that most sculptures from ancient Greece and Rome were originally extensively painted. Research has mainly focused on the function and selection of pigments as well as the location of the color on ancient marble statues. Many questions still remain concerning the aesthetics of the prepared surfaces of polychrome sculpture. Our understanding of the aesthetic and optical qualities of Greek and Roman marble sculpture is still in its infancy. However, with the development of modern technologies allowing for advanced technical examinations, it is now quite possible to discern such optical qualities. There also remains evidence of …

Experimentalism And The Vietnam War: The Gnostic Poetry Of Nathaniel Mackey, Robert Duncan, And Their Peers, Jake Lough Jan 2021

Experimentalism And The Vietnam War: The Gnostic Poetry Of Nathaniel Mackey, Robert Duncan, And Their Peers, Jake Lough

Theses & ETDs

This is an investigation of the Robert Duncan and Nathaniel Mackey’s poetry, understanding their work as a part of the gnostic tradition of poetry. Through close reading of poetry and prose, it looks at the ways that their poetry seeks to go beyond the limitations of language and convey things to the reader that other mediums cannot. The process of reading and understanding these author’s work is something like a process of initiation, and that process helps to immerse the reader into their writing. This thesis looks at Robert Duncan in light of his reaction to the Vietnam War, and …

The Historical Considerations, Social Benefits, And Environmental Impacts Of Green Spaces In Shanghai, Hailey Mcgleam Jan 2021

The Historical Considerations, Social Benefits, And Environmental Impacts Of Green Spaces In Shanghai, Hailey Mcgleam

Theses & ETDs

Despite many studies on air pollution in Shanghai, little research has been done with the role that green spaces hold in providing both social and air pollution mitigating ecosystem services. In this paper, not only do I explore these ecosystem services, I also contextualize the economic, historical, political, and cultural factors that have created the environmental crisis in China and the air pollution problem in Shanghai. Using data analysis from AQI monitoring stations near green spaces and comparing it to the average AQI for each district, I am able to demonstrate in Shanghai’s Pudong, Chongming, and Fengxian Districts, areas near …

The Role Of Symbiodiniaceae On The Development Of Cassiopea Xamachana Under A Climate Change Scenario, Marjorie Netwal Jan 2021

The Role Of Symbiodiniaceae On The Development Of Cassiopea Xamachana Under A Climate Change Scenario, Marjorie Netwal

Theses & ETDs

There is an expanding body of knowledge surrounding the cnidarian-algae symbiosis which seeks to explore the intricacies of this relationship and deepen the understanding of the role algal thermotolerance plays in the success and longevity of the relationship. The adaptive bleaching hypothesis informs this line of research in that the it proposes that the ability of a host cnidarian to uptake a more thermotolerant species of algae than what it might naturally be in symbiosis with would afford the host more resistance to heat stress in the event of increasing seawater temperatures. In this study, Cassiopea xamachana polyps were used …

The Relation Of Mindful Parenting And Executive Functioning In Preschool-Aged Children, Sabrina Hyvarinen Jan 2021

The Relation Of Mindful Parenting And Executive Functioning In Preschool-Aged Children, Sabrina Hyvarinen

Theses & ETDs

The main goal of the study was to investigate the possible relationship between mindful parenting and children's executive functioning. It was hypothesized that mindful parenting would be negatively associated with children’s rate of reported executive dysfunction. It was also hypothesized that boys would exhibit greater executive dysfunction than girls, and that 4-year-olds would exhibit greater executive dysfunction than 5-year-olds. Parents of children of the age 4-5 years were invited to participate in an online survey, and reported on their mindful parenting behaviors via the Interpersonal Mindfulness in Parenting scale (IEM-P), and their children’s executive dysfunction via the Childhood Executive Functioning …

Otherwise Than Phenomenology: Emmanuel Levinas On Performative Language, Time, And Henri Bergson, Evan Thompson Jan 2021

Otherwise Than Phenomenology: Emmanuel Levinas On Performative Language, Time, And Henri Bergson, Evan Thompson

Theses & ETDs

Contemporary philosophical research has, following Gilles Deleuze, turned toward the work of Henri Bergson with the intent of challenging phenomenology and its lingering influence. While Bergsonism has been put to anti-phenomenological use since Deleuze’s 1988 study, Bergsonism, one figure stands out for his ambiguous situation vis-à-vis the opposition between Bergsonism and phenomenology. Eight years prior to the publication of Bergsonism, Emmanuel Levinas wrote, “[i]t is important to underline the importance of Bergsonism for the entire problematic of contemporary philosophy; it is… the priority of duration over permanence—there is access to novelty, an access independent of the ontology of the Same”. …
