Examination Of Shamans As Cultural Leaders In The Hmong American Communities, Phoua Y. Vang
Examination Of Shamans As Cultural Leaders In The Hmong American Communities, Phoua Y. Vang
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Leadership in the world today is under crisis because many individuals serving as positional leaders lack effective leadership capacities. Many organizations choose leaders based on individuals’ academic performance and personality traits; however, those same organizations often experience failures due to the ineffective leadership skills of key personnel charged with managing the organizations (Helsel et al., 2020). The purpose of this study was to investigate Hmong Shamans’ leadership using a qualitative phenomenological research methodology. A semi-structured interview format was used to collect data from eight Hmong Shamans in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Participants were asked to discuss the qualities and behaviors that …
Qbd Approach For Development Of Ivermectin-Loaded Gastro Retentive Sustained Release Tablets As Mass Drug Administration For Malaria Transmission Control, Zhangjie Xi
Theses and Dissertations
Malaria is a life-threatening disease with a high prevalence worldwide. Mass drug administration (MDA) of ivermectin have been shown to prevent the transmission of malaria. The objective of this investigation is to develop ivermectin-loaded gastro retentive sustained release tablets (GRSRTs), which have the potential to avoid not only frequent administration of MDA but also fluctuation of ivermectin in systemic circulation. Based on the outcomes from screening various materials to be the suitable matrix forming polymer and bio-adhesive polymer mixture of GRSRTs, HPMC K100M, Carbopol 934p and sodium alginate:chitosan (1:1) were selected as formulation variables. Eight formulations of ivermectin-loaded GRSRTs were …
Double-Coated Biodegradable Poly (Butyl Cyanoacrylate) Nanoparticulate Delivery Systems For Brain Targeting Of Doxorubicin Via Oral Administration, Neeraj Kaushal
Theses and Dissertations
Primary brain cancer cells grow within the brain or cancer cells can metastasis from different site of the body into brain. The major hurdle in the treatment of brain cancer is the presence of blood-brain barrier (BBB). Additionally, acquired multidrug-resistant (MDR) impedes the success of long-term chemotherapy. Therefore, the objective of this investigation is to evaluate the brain targeting potential of orally administered poly(butyl cyanoacrylate) nanoparticulate delivery systems (PBCA-NPDS), double-coated with Tween 80 and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 20000 for brain delivery of doxorubicin, that does not cross the BBB by itself. And, evaluate the MDR reversal potential of PBCA-NPDS. Doxorubicin-loaded …
Up-Regulation Of Fibroblast Growth Factor (Fgf) 21 Via Ap-1 Activation Attenuates Cisplatin-Induced Hepatotoxicity, Yue Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Fibroblast growth factor (Fgf in rodents and FGF in human) 21 plays important roles in the maintenance of sugar, lipid and energy homeostasis. Fgf/FGF21 can be up-regulated via activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), glucocorticoid receptor (GR), and activating transcription factor (ATF) 4. Recent studies also demonstrated that Fgf/FGF21 plays cytoprotective roles against chemical-induced toxicities, such as of dioxins, acetaminophen, and alcohols. Cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum, CDDP) is a widely used chemotherapeutic drug. However, numerous adverse effects have been noted during CDDP therapy, which largely limit its clinical applications. This study was designed to determine the regulation of …

Ficción Y Cientificismo: Opendoor Y Paraísos De Iosi Havilio Y La Comemadre De Roque Larraquy” [Fiction And Scientism: Iosi Havilio’S Opendoor And Paraísos And Roque Larraquy’S La Comemadre], Martín L. Gaspar

Handwashing And Beyond: An Autoethnographic Account Of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder And Stigma Management, Nicholas J. Johnson
Handwashing And Beyond: An Autoethnographic Account Of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder And Stigma Management, Nicholas J. Johnson
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a stigmatized condition that affects the communicative process. Using Meisenbach’s theory of stigma management communication (SMC), this project demonstrates coping strategies for stigma related to OCD. Research is self-reported in autoethnographic form, where narratives are analyzed in Rambo’s layered account format. There are two results of note: SMC is a suitable framework for understanding OCD stigma, and SMC’s accepting strategies are more effective at managing OCD stigma when the behavior being stigmatized is readily associated with OCD. Furthermore, this thesis suggests autoethnography is an effective medium for showcasing OCD stigma, and also suggests more research on …

Expansion Microscopy To Visualize Cell-Cycle Events In The Abbreviated Cell Cycle In Caenorhabditis Elegans (Roundworm) Germline Stem Cells, Taylor Campbell
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The abbreviated cell cycle is a poorly understood form of the cell cycle essential for genome stability in stem cells. To visualize cell-cycle events in the abbreviated cell cycle, we optimized a protocol for expansion microscopy in stem cells of the reproductive system of the model organism C. elegans. Optimizations included development of new mounting techniques and modifications to DNA staining methods. These optimizations produced brighter samples that were easier to find and focus on at the microscope. These optimizations, combined with future labeling of DNA replication, will expand our understanding of how cells with an abbreviated cell cycle maintain …

Fathering And Masculinity In Children’S Animated Films: An Analysis Of Top Grossing Lifetime Films Released 1989-2017, Kasyera Kowalczyk
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Understanding gender norms, including norms surrounding parenthood, is one tool acquired during socialization. Film provides an efficient pathway for observational learning to occur in children, especially as they spend more of their time consuming media. Given the importance of the media’s role in socializing children and continued research on how children use media to construct their own ideas, it is necessary to analyze messages regarding fatherhood and masculinity that are portrayed to children to better understand how they may use these messages when constructing their own beliefs. To address this gap, this project analyzed a sample of the top lifetime-grossing …

No. 49: Urban Food System Governance And Food Security In Namibia, Jonathan Crush, Ndeyapo Nickanor, Lawrence Kazembe
Hungry Cities Partnership
Namibia’s transition to an urban society is occurring extremely rapidly and with it has come a transformation of urban food systems, changes in diets and food consumption patterns, increased undernutrition and overnutrition, and the rapid growth of non-communicable diseases. This paper examines the policy response of the Namibian government to the nutrition transition and double burden of malnutrition with particular reference to urban centres and populations. The national government assumes responsibility for all food security and health-related programming, while local government’s mandate is largely confined to non-food related management issues such as housing, transport and sanitation. The paper shows that …

Cyber-Security, Privacy, And The Covid-19 Attenuation?, Vincent J. Samar
Journal of Legislation
Large-scale data brokers collect massive amounts of highly personal consumer information to be sold to whoever will pay their price, even at the expense of sacrificing individual privacy and autonomy in the process. In this Article, I will show how a proper understanding and justification for a right to privacy, in context to both protecting private acts and safeguarding information and states of affairs for the performance of such acts, provides a necessary background framework for imposing legal restrictions on such collections. This problem, which has already gained some attention in literature, now becomes even more worrisome, as government itself …

Regulating The Political Wild West: State Efforts To Disclose Sources Of Online Political Advertising, Victoria Smith Ekstrand, Ashley Fox
Journal of Legislation
The problem of disinformation in online political advertising is growing, with ongoing and potential threats to campaigns coming from both within and outside the United States. Most scholarship in this area has focused on either disclosures and disclaimers under the proposed Honest Ads Act or other fixes aimed at a gridlocked Federal Election Commission (“FEC”). With federal reform at a standstill, states have jumped into the void. Between the 2016 presidential election and early 2020, eight states passed legislation to expressly regulate online political advertising for state candidates and ballot measures, including Maryland, whose state law was declared unconstitutional as …
Vast Prairies And Trackless Wilds Of Snow: A Good Test Of Sincerity, Daniel C. Peterson
Vast Prairies And Trackless Wilds Of Snow: A Good Test Of Sincerity, Daniel C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Embarking roughly six months after the organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the 1830–1831 “mission to the Lamanites” faced challenges that we pampered moderns can scarcely imagine. Oliver Cowdery, Peter Whitmer Jr., Parley P. Pratt, Ziba Peterson, and, eventually, Frederick G. Williams demonstrated beyond reasonable dispute the depth of their commitment to the Restoration and to the promises extended by the Book of Mormon to the surviving children of Lehi. Given that Cowdery and Whitmer were witnesses of the golden plates, this demonstration of their genuine belief seems significant.

Background/aim: We aimed to investigate the topical application of mitomycin-C (MMC) after the conventional tracheostomy in a rabbit model. Materials and methods: Twenty-four male New Zealand White rabbits were randomly divided among 3 equal groups (n: 8). Tracheostomies were performed on 16 subjects. Group 1 which served as a control for all tracheal measurements. After tracheostomy, we applied sterile saline (group 2) or MMC at 0.8 mg/mL (group 3) around the tracheotomy site for 5 min. At the 3rd week after surgery, all tracheas were subjected to morphometric and histopathological examinations, including tracheal lumen diameter (LD), number of capillary vessels …

Epigenetic Histone Acetylation And Bdnf Dysregulation In The Hippocampus Of Rats Exposed To Repeated, Low-Dose Diisopropylfluorophosphate, Laxmikant Deshpande
Neurology Publications
Aims: Deployment-related exposures to organophosphate (OP) compounds are implicated for Gulf War Illness (GWI) development in First GW veterans. However, reasons for the persistence of GWI are not fully understood. Epigenetic modifications to chromatin are regulatory mechanisms that can adaptively or maladaptively respond to external stimuli. These include DNA methylation and histone acetylation. DNA methylation changes have been reported in GWI but the role of histone acetylation in GWI has been less explored, despite its importance as an epigenetic mechanism for neurological disorders.
Main methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to OP diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DFP, 0.5 mg/kg s.c., 5-d) and …

Chelcey Dunham, VCU Interior Design MFA 2023, selected A Looking Glass for the 2021 Colonialism And The Americas, Object Analysis Project.
Around 1720, mahogany was imported to England and began to supersede walnut as the wood of choice for fancy furniture. The North East colonies were a good stopping point along the shipping route from Jamaica, Cuba, and Honduras. Of course, some of the mahogany remained in the North East, and that is most likely how Mr. Elliott got his supply of Mahogany for his many-looking glasses. It was most likely designed to fit on a wall between two windows, …

The problem of rote-based learning in mathematics is well documented. Mobile technology can provide a potential solution; especially when application (app) design is based on sound pedagogical principles and gamification elements. However; an inventory of available mobile apps for mathematics reveals that many of the available apps are guided by a behaviorist perspective that favors repetition over meaningful learning. This paper reports on the design of mobile mathematics apps that harness gamification techniques to promote higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) even in basic elementary school concepts such as number comparison; and addition and subtraction. The integration of these apps in the …
