Introduction and Hypothesis. The role of inflammation is widely recognized in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease. Research on animal models had shown the potential benefits of targeting specific inflammatory pathways. However, studies on human subjects are limited with small number of patients and no head-to-head comparisons. Methods. We conducted a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials that studied the effects of anti-inflammatory medications on cardiovascular outcomes of coronary artery disease patients. We searched the electronic database until March 2020 for relevant studies. Results. Nineteen trials examining the efficacy of eight anti-inflammatory medications (pexelizumab, anakinra, colchicine, darapladib, …

Crossbred Angus cow–calf pairs (n = 28 pairs) at the Central Grasslands Research Extension Center (Streeter, North Dakota) were used to evaluate an electronic feeder to monitor individual mineral intake and feeding behavior and their relationship with growth performance and liver mineral concentrations. Cows and calves were fitted with radio frequency identification ear tags that allowed access to an electronic feeder (SmartFeed system; C-Lock Inc., Rapid City, South Dakota) and were provided ad libitum minerals (Purina Wind and Rain Storm, Land O’Lakes, Inc., Arden Hills, MN). Mineral intake, number of visits, and duration at the feeder were recorded over …
Servant Leadership As Organizational Mindfulness, Cia Kozak
Servant Leadership As Organizational Mindfulness, Cia Kozak
Mindfulness Studies Theses
Abstract
Servant leadership exemplifies mindfulness precepts in a systems environment. Robert K. Greenleaf’s (1970/2008) servant leadership movement launched with his seminal essay, The Servant as Leader, in which he revealed an affinity with the philosophy of mindfulness. There is a commonality of language and behaviors that servant leadership shares with mindfulness principles. In addition, servant leadership’s aspiration for holistic member wellbeing reflects mindfulness teachings. The servant leadership hierarchical model upends traditional organization constructs, demonstrating a mindfulness view of community whereby the leader serves all rather than all serving the leader. This echoes Buddhist monastic communities in which power is …

Artistic Expressions Of Vegan Women With Disturbed Eating Behavior And Body Image Distress, Lee Ann Thill
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
This research explores the experience of women who are vegan, and have disturbed eating behaviors (DEB) and body image distress (BID). Four participants completed a series of three art-making sessions. Participants were invited to visually explore their experience as a vegan woman with DEB/BID. They made a mixed media collage with an emphasis on layering in each session. They engaged in discussion about their process, and the final art piece’s meaning. Between sessions, researcher response art pieces were created for each participant piece, with accompanying journal reflections to engage with the ideas they explored. All participant sessions were video and …
Efficacy Of Expressive Therapy In Treating Combat-Related Ptsd – A Critical Review Of Literature, Lauren Pratt
Efficacy Of Expressive Therapy In Treating Combat-Related Ptsd – A Critical Review Of Literature, Lauren Pratt
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Recent advances in battlefield triage have curtailed combat-related deaths, simultaneously increasing the rate of combat-related trauma, and thereby emphasizing the need for access to efficacious treatment of PTSD in returning veterans. Veterans who may have sustained life-ending injuries from concussive elements such as explosions are instead surviving with PTSD and its debilitating effects. Recent studies suggest that traditional methods of treatment such as medication and talk therapy, while useful, are incomplete tactics when it comes to treating non-verbal trauma. The burgeoning field of expressive therapies (expressive art therapy, dance, drama, art, music, writing, etc.) offers a new approach that is …

Barley is an important cereal crop worldwide because of its use in the brewing and distilling industry. However, adequate supplies of quality malting barley are threatened by global climate change due to drought in some regions and excess precipitation in others, which facilitates epidemics caused by fungal pathogens. The disease net form net blotch caused by the necrotrophic fungal pathogen Pyrenophora teres f. teres (Ptt) has emerged as a global threat to barley production and diverse populations of Ptt have shown a capacity to overcome deployed genetic resistances. The barley line CI5791 exhibits remarkably effective resistance to diverse Ptt isolates …

The purpose of this study was to produce rendering animal carcass residue char (RACR-C) by pyrolyzing the solid residues of low-recyclable rendered pig carcasses and to evaluate their cadmium (Cd) adsorption characteristics and mechanisms. As the pyrolysis temperature increased, the inorganic content of RACR-C increased, while the carbon content decreased. In particular, the surface structure and chemistry of RACR-Cs prepared at different pyrolysis temperatures were well described by SEM-EDS, XRD, XRF, TGA, and FTIR. The Cd adsorption characteristics of RACR-C were in good agreement with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order models, and the Cd adsorption capacities of RACR-Cs prepared at …
The Hermeneutic Interpretation And Understanding Of Meaning As The Precondition Of Phenomenological Cognition, And The Translational Transformation Of Reality, Simon Glynn
Al-Kīmiyā
Language is a system of signifiers, and of the concepts signified by them; concepts which, as de Saussure has shown, are delineated by the relations between the semiotic signs which constitute language. Thus, understood as a system of concepts, then as Wittgenstein, Quine and Derrida et al. recognized, language delineates the thoughts and understanding which it constitutes. Moreover, insofar as Hermeneutic Phenomenologists such as Heidegger recognized, and as cognitive psychologists such as Ames, and the Gestaltists, have demonstrated, our concepts mediate even our most basic perceptions, then language mediates, and thus delineates, our very experiences of the world also.

Use of digital communication technologies (DCT) shows promise for enhancing outcomes and efficiencies in asthma care management. However, little is known about the impact of DCT interventions on healthcare personnel requirements and costs, thus making it difficult for providers and health systems to understand the value of these interventions. This study evaluated the differences in healthcare personnel requirements and costs between usual asthma care (UC) and a DCT intervention (Breathewell) aimed at maintaining guidelines-based asthma care while reducing health care staffing requirements. We used data from a pragmatic, randomized controlled trial conducted in a large integrated health system involving 14,978 …
Genetic Transformation In Cryptococcus Species, Ping Wang
Genetic Transformation In Cryptococcus Species, Ping Wang
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
Genetic transformation plays an imperative role in our understanding of the biology in unicellular yeasts and filamentous fungi, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Aspergillus nidulans, Cryphonectria parasitica, and Magnaporthe oryzae. It also helps to understand the virulence and drug resistance mechanisms of the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus that causes cryptococcosis in health and immunocompromised individuals. Since the first attempt at DNA transformation in this fungus by Edman in 1992, various methods and techniques have been developed to introduce DNA into this organism and improve the efficiency of homology-mediated gene disruption. There have been many excellent summaries or reviews covering the subject. Here …

Division of Internal Medicine Faculty Papers & Presentations
Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers are one of the most common malignancies worldwide, with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are major components of the tumor microenvironment (TME). MDSCs facilitate the transformation of premalignant cells and play roles in tumor growth and metastasis. Moreover, in patients with GI malignancies, MDSCs can lead to the suppression of T cells and natural killer cells. Accordingly, a better understanding of the role and mechanism of action of MDSCs in the TME will aid in the development of novel immune-targeted therapies.

Objective: Patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) pose considerable management challenges for patients, their families, and providers. Both the vagus nerve stimulator (VNS) and the ketogenic diet (KD) have been shown to be safe and effective in treating DRE. Nevertheless, information is lacking regarding treatment with combination of both modalities. This study reports the efficacy and tolerability of combining VNS and KD in a pediatric cohort with intractable epilepsy.
Methods: This is a retrospective review of 33 patients (0-17 years) with DRE treated with VNS and KD at a single pediatric level IV epilepsy center. We compared seizure reduction rates for …

High-Density Lipoproteins And Serum Amyloid A (Saa), Nancy R. Webb
Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Serum amyloid A (SAA) is a highly sensitive acute phase reactant that has been linked to a number of chronic inflammatory diseases. During a systemic inflammatory response, liver-derived SAA is primarily found on high-density lipoprotein (HDL). The purpose of this review is to discuss recent literature addressing the pathophysiological functions of SAA and the significance of its association with HDL.
RECENT FINDINGS: Studies in gene-targeted mice establish that SAA contributes to atherosclerosis and some metastatic cancers. Accumulating evidence indicates that the lipidation state of SAA profoundly affects its bioactivities, with lipid-poor, but not HDL-associated, SAA capable of …

Background: Biological functions of biomolecules rely on the cellular compartments where they are located in cells. Importantly, RNAs are assigned in specific locations of a cell, enabling the cell to implement diverse biochemical processes in the way of concurrency. However, lots of existing RNA subcellular localization classifiers only solve the problem of single-label classification. It is of great practical significance to expand RNA subcellular localization into multi-label classification problem.
Results: In this study, we extract multi-label classification datasets about RNA-associated subcellular localizations on various types of RNAs, and then construct subcellular localization datasets on four RNA categories. In order to …

Modularity Of Feedback For State-Dependent Guidance Of Navigation In Mouse Visual Cortex, Andrew M. Meier
Modularity Of Feedback For State-Dependent Guidance Of Navigation In Mouse Visual Cortex, Andrew M. Meier
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Navigating through unpredictable environments requires an efficiently organized sensory system capable of adapting to behavioral demands. In the mammalian visual system, two adaptations which have arisen to meet these demands are parallel processing and top-down feedback of internally generated expectations and contextual information for adjusting responses to match the needs of the current behavioral task. Mouse visual cortex exhibits the latter of these organizing principles, like other mammals, in the form of a molecular layer (Layer 1) which receives feedback to contextually adapt sensory responses from the outside world. The first of these organizing principles, parallel processing streams, generally takes …
Measuring And Manipulating Tension-Dependent Behavior Of Mechanosensitive Ion Channels, Angela M. Schlegel
Measuring And Manipulating Tension-Dependent Behavior Of Mechanosensitive Ion Channels, Angela M. Schlegel
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Mechanical forces play critical roles throughout the lives of all organisms and, as such, diverse arrays of mechanotransduction systems have evolved to detect and initiate responses to force. Many mechanotransduction systems consist of mechanosensitive (MS) ion channels, membrane pores that open in response to sufficient mechanical force. My dissertation focuses on both the study and application of force-dependent conformational changes of MS channels. I tested whether charged pore-lining residues R326 and D327 of the Arabidopsis thaliana mitochondrial MS channel MSL1 function in inward rectification or gating kinetics. Mutating these residues showed no effect on MSL1 rectification; however, these residues are …

Abstract
The materials presented in this book were developed for an advanced-level content-based Russian language course at Portland State University entitled “Russian Literature of the Twentieth Century: The 1920s.” Literature of this period is a major part of the Russian canon, but is notoriously difficult for learners of Russian to read in the original, due both to its stylistic complexity and the relative obscurity of its historical, political, …
Raising Animals To Die For Profit: How Corporate America Is Changing Human Animal Relationships In Rural America, Sabrina Brakke
Raising Animals To Die For Profit: How Corporate America Is Changing Human Animal Relationships In Rural America, Sabrina Brakke
SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research
Corporate ownership of livestock operations for meat and animal by-products has had a dramatic effect on human-animal relationships in rural areas of the United States. This evolution mandates mass production of livestock in large concentrated animal feed organizations (CAFO’s). In contrast, animal breeding for sport, such as hunting which also produces food, has not generated the same adverse effect on these relationships. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with two rural Iowa women, one raising livestock to be sold for meat and by-products; the other raising livestock to be hunted. Ferdinand Tonnies’ social groupings, gesellschaft and gemeinschaft, were used as theoretical …
Neural Coding And Organization Principles In The Drosophila Olfactory System, Haoyang Rong
Neural Coding And Organization Principles In The Drosophila Olfactory System, Haoyang Rong
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Sensory systems receive and process external stimuli to allow an organism to perceive and react to the environment. How is sensory information subsequently represented, transformed, and interpreted in the neural system? In this dissertation, I have investigated this fundamental question using the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) olfactory system.Chemical cues are transduced into neural signals in the insect antenna by the olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs). The ORNs send their axons to the antennal lobe (AL), with each ORN type innervating a specific neuropil (glomerulus), where they synapse onto excitatory and inhibitory projection neurons (ePNs and iPNs). The ePNs project their axons …
Focused Ultrasound-Mediated Drug Delivery To The Brainstem, Dezhuang Ye
Focused Ultrasound-Mediated Drug Delivery To The Brainstem, Dezhuang Ye
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Brainstem gliomas are tumors that occur in the brainstem, the brain region that connects the brain to the spinal cord and controls vital body functions. The critical anatomic location of the brainstem precludes surgical intervention and limits the use of invasive therapeutic techniques. Moreover, the frequently intact blood-brain barrier (BBB) of most brainstem gliomas prevents therapeutic agents from reaching the diseased site. The currently available techniques for brain drug delivery are either invasive (e.g., convection-enhanced delivery) or lack targeting to the diseased site (e.g., intranasal brain drug delivery). Novel techniques that can noninvasively overcome the BBB are critically needed for …
Sustainable Bioproduction By Rhodopseudomonas Palustris Tie-1 Through Metabolic Engineering, Wei Bai
Sustainable Bioproduction By Rhodopseudomonas Palustris Tie-1 Through Metabolic Engineering, Wei Bai
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The heavy reliance of the petroleum industry for raw material and the rising atmospheric CO2 caused by this reliance have driven the research and development of sustainable alternatives. Microbial production of chemicals, such as fuel and plastic, has been viewed as a feasible method. The wide selection of substrates by microbes enables them to produce chemicals using naturally abundant material or industrial waste, such as CO2, making the production sustainable. Compared to the model organisms such as Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, many non-model organisms have a broader selection for carbon, electron, and nitrogen sources, making them great candidates for sustainable …
Mapping Transcription Factor Networks And Elucidating Their Biological Determinants, Yiming Kang
Mapping Transcription Factor Networks And Elucidating Their Biological Determinants, Yiming Kang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
A central goal in systems biology is to accurately map the transcription factor (TF) network of a cell. Such a network map is a key component for many downstream applications, from developmental biology to transcriptome engineering, and from disease modeling to drug discovery. Building a reliable network map requires a wide range of data sources including TF binding locations and gene expression data after direct TF perturbations. However, we are facing two roadblocks. First, rich resources are available only for a few well-studied systems and cannot be easily replicated for new organisms or cell types. Second, when TF binding and …
Differentiating Human Embryonic Stem Cells In Micropatterns To Study Cell Fate Specification And Morphogenetic Events During Gastrulation, Kyaw Thu Minn
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
During mammalian embryogenesis, the first major lineage segregation occurs when embryonic epiblast, and extraembryonic trophectoderm and hypoblast arise in the blastocyst. In the next fundamental and conserved phase of animal embryogenesis known as gastrulation, extraembryonic cells provide signals to epiblast to instruct embryonic patterning, and epiblast gives rise to germ layers ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm, that will establish all embryonic tissues. Proper specification and morphogenesis of germ layers during gastrulation is vital for correct embryonic development. Due to ethical and legal restrictions limiting human embryo studies, human gastrulation is poorly understood. Our knowledge of human gastrulation has largely been derived …
Discovery And Characterization Of Circular And Chimeric Rnas In Complex Diseases, Xiaoxin Liu
Discovery And Characterization Of Circular And Chimeric Rnas In Complex Diseases, Xiaoxin Liu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Non-co-linear RNAs, including circular and chimeric RNAs, have been investigated in a broad range of cellular processes and various diseases. The current biogenesis models of circular and chimeric RNAs depend on RNA splicing mechanisms. We hypothesized that some of the non-co-linear RNAs are products of an alternative mechanism other than RNA splicing. To test this hypothesis, we developed a method, which is independent of genome annotations and splicing signals, to identify Circular and Chimeric RNAs of All Types (C2AT or CAT for simplicity) by analyzing the RNA species profiled by whole genome RNA sequencing. Statistical analysis and experimental validation revealed …
Nanoscale Enhancement Of Photosensitized Radionuclide Stimulated Therapy, Daniel Douglas Lane
Nanoscale Enhancement Of Photosensitized Radionuclide Stimulated Therapy, Daniel Douglas Lane
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) provides efficient tumor killing through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the optical excitation of a photosensitizer (PS). Furthermore, this mechanism is highly immune stimulating, providing systemic tumor immunity with a reduction in metastasis. However, these materials had previously been limited by their dependence upon external light sources, allowing treatment of only laser-accessible malignancy. With the recent development of photosensitized radiation stimulated therapy (PRaST) this depth dependence is broken through co-localization of radionuclides and semiconducting photosensitizers. This dissertation focuses on the enhancement of titanium dioxide (TiO2) based PRaST agents through understanding of TiO2 material parameters …
