Radio Carbon - Hybrid Documentary Process, Robert Stokes Dec 2021

Radio Carbon - Hybrid Documentary Process, Robert Stokes

Theses

Radio Carbon is a documentary made using a methodology for creating conscious digital video projects with a process privileging respect for crew, subject, and environment over the needs of a commercial, or market driven product. The guidelines imposed by this method are fluid, and project-specific in terms of their exact interpretation for each film. This project is meant to demonstrate a production style that allows for work to be made by the participants without a dominating creative force at every stage of production. This is made possible through the introduction of chance operations at several key points along the production …

Ahr Activation And T-Cell Expression In Eyfp Mice, Claire M. Hamilton Dec 2021

Ahr Activation And T-Cell Expression In Eyfp Mice, Claire M. Hamilton

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The objective of this study was to determine what blood cell types express the B lymphocyte-induced maturation protein-1 (BLIMP-1) gene. Such findings would be instrumental in research regarding the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) which is important in immune responses. The experimental model was a transgenic mouse that expresses the enhanced yellow fluorescent protein (eYFP) under the control of the BLIMP-1 promoter. Testing was carried out in two parts; (1) testing mice for eYFP presence and (2) testing mice for phenotypic cell markers. Cell samples were tested via flow cytometry. During phase one of testing it was found that positive mice …

Background: Aspergillus species cause aflatoxin contamination in groundnut kernels, being a health threat in agricultural products and leading to commodity rejection by domestic and international markets. Presence of Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus colonizing groundnut in eastern Ethiopia, as well as presence of aflatoxins have been reported, though in this region, no genetic studies have been done of these species in relation to their aflatoxin production. Results: In this study, 145 Aspergillus isolates obtained from groundnut kernels in eastern Ethiopia were genetically fingerprinted using 23 Insertion/Deletion (InDel) markers within the aflatoxin-biosynthesis gene cluster (ABC), identifying 133 ABC genotypes. Eighty-four isolates …

Spatiotemporal Pattern Detection With Neuromorphic Circuits, Robert C. Ivans Dec 2021

Spatiotemporal Pattern Detection With Neuromorphic Circuits, Robert C. Ivans

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, neuromorphic circuits are used to implement spiking neural networks in order to detect spatiotemporal patterns. Unsupervised training and detection-by-design techniques were used to attain the appropriate connectomes and perform pattern detection.

Unsupervised training was performed by feeding random digital spikes with a repeating embedded spatiotemporal pattern to a spiking neural network composed of leaky integrate-and-fire neurons and memristor-R(t) element circuits which implement spike-timing-dependent plasticity learning rules.

Detection-by-design was achieved using neuromporphic circuits and digital logic gates. When detection-by-design was achieved using both neuromorphic circuits and digital logic gates, a network was created of spatiotemporal pattern detector circuits, …

Developing Strategy For A Successful Antioxidant, Anticancer Activity Via An Improved Method Prepared To Porous Silicon Nanoparticles, Kareem Jawad, Butheina Hasson Dec 2021

Developing Strategy For A Successful Antioxidant, Anticancer Activity Via An Improved Method Prepared To Porous Silicon Nanoparticles, Kareem Jawad, Butheina Hasson

Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology

Porous silicon nanoparticles, or PSNPs, are one of the most common NPS with distinct characteristics. PSNPs were created using an enhanced approach known as the electrochemical etching process. The nanoparticles were treated with a post-laser to obtain the nanoparticles, which were subsequently analyzed using (SEM), (UV-Vis), and (XRD). The size refers to porous silicon with a nanostructure. Because of the differences in interaction between the HF electrolyzed and silicon and crystal structure, PS (100) offers better NP properties than directional silicon (111). PSNPs' antioxidant activity was measured using the DPPH test, while cytotoxicity was measured using the MTT assay on …

Obesity is primarily a consequence of consuming calories beyond energetic requirements, but underpinning drivers have not been fully defined. 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) neurons in the dorsal Raphe nucleus (5-HTDRN) regulate different types of feeding behavior, such as eating to cope with hunger or for pleasure. Here, we observed that activation of 5-HTDRN to hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (5-HTDRN → ARH) projections inhibits food intake driven by hunger via actions at ARH 5-HT2C and 5-HT1B receptors, whereas activation of 5-HTDRN to ventral tegmental area (5-HTDRN → VTA) projections inhibits non-hunger-driven feeding via actions at 5-HT2C receptors. Further, hunger-driven feeding gradually activates ARH-projecting 5-HTDRN …

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Optimizing enteral nutrition for premature infants may help mitigate extrauterine growth restriction and adverse chronic health outcomes. Previously, we showed in neonatal pigs born at term that lean growth is enhanced by intermittent bolus compared with continuous feeding. The objective was to determine if prematurity impacts how body composition, muscle protein synthesis, and myonuclear accretion respond to feeding modality. Following preterm delivery, pigs were fed equivalent amounts of formula delivered either as intermittent boluses (INT; n = 30) or continuously (CONT; n = 14) for 21 days. Body composition was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and muscle growth was …

Copyright’S Techno-Pessimist Creep, Xiyin Tang

Fordham Law Review

Government investigations and public scrutiny of Big Tech are at an all-time high. While current legal scholarship and government focus have centered overwhelmingly on whether and how antitrust law and § 230 of the Communications Decency Act can be revised to address platform dominance, scant attention has been paid to another, almost unseen attempt to regulate Big Tech: copyright law. The recent adoption in Europe of Article 17 of the Copyright Directive, which holds internet platforms liable for user-generated creative content unless they obtain costly content licenses, is the most direct example of such regulation—and may serve as precedent for …

“Community Guidelines”: The Legal Implications Of Workplace Conditions For Internet Content Moderators, Anna Drootin Dec 2021

“Community Guidelines”: The Legal Implications Of Workplace Conditions For Internet Content Moderators, Anna Drootin

Fordham Law Review

Content moderation is the internet’s not-so-secret, dirty little secret. Content moderators are working around the world, and around the clock, to scrub the internet of horrific content. Most moderators work for low pay and with little or no health care benefits. The content they are exposed to leaves them vulnerable to a number of different mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder. Their work is often hidden from users and is de-emphasized by the technology industry. This Note explores potential solutions to the labor and employment issues inherent in content moderation work and suggests that there could be a path …

Broadcast Authenticated Encryption With Keyword Search, Xueqiao Liu, Kai He, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo, Joseph Tonien, Qiong Huang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The emergence of public-key encryption with keyword search (PEKS) has provided an elegant approach to enable keyword search over encrypted content. Due to its high computational complexity proportional to the number of intended receivers, the trivial way of deploying PEKS for data sharing with multiple receivers is impractical, which motivates the development of a new PEKS framework for broadcast mode. However, existing works suffer from either the vulnerability to keyword guessing attacks (KGA) or high computation and communication complexity. In this work, a new primitive for keyword search in broadcast mode, named broadcast authenticated encryption with keyword search (BAEKS), is …

Video Snapshot: Single Image Motion Expansion Via Invertible Motion Embedding, Qianshu Zhu, Chu Han, Guoqiang Han, Tien-Tsin Wong, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unlike images, finding the desired video content in a large pool of videos is not easy due to the time cost of loading and watching. Most video streaming and sharing services provide the video preview function for a better browsing experience. In this paper, we aim to generate a video preview from a single image. To this end, we propose two cascaded networks, the motion embedding network and the motion expansion network. The motion embedding network aims to embed the spatio-temporal information into an embedded image, called video snapshot. On the other end, the motion expansion network is proposed to …

Assessment Of The Skeletonization And Motion Monitoring System For The Security Efficiency Of The United States Airports, Haoruo Fu

Theses and Dissertations

The screening processes at airports, including passengers and baggage, have changed dramatically in the past twenty years. The goal of the X-ray scanning is to enhance airport screening by preventing passengers from carrying weapons and contraband. X-ray is more effective compared to traditional pat-down. The X-ray shoots beams through passengers and their baggage, which provides an inner view to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners. Issues and concerns of the use of X-ray have also been raised, as some passengers complained about possible health issues due to the body exposure of radioactive waves; other experts pointed out possible human factor …

Arion 33: A Prospective Mission To Near-Earth Asteroids, Alita Regi Dec 2021

Arion 33: A Prospective Mission To Near-Earth Asteroids, Alita Regi

Theses and Dissertations

Near-Earth asteroids will become primary targets for space industrialization in the future as humanity becomes a multi-planetary species. But before such missions, it is necessary to survey these asteroids for their intrinsic scientific value. Exploring asteroids via orbiter missions can help us understand the asteroid's surface composition while providing us a cost and power model required for future missions. Therefore, it is beneficial to study asteroids to pave the way for future mining operations or more comprehensive scientific explorations. Hence, in this thesis, the target asteroids 2011 UW158 and 65803 Didymos are selected as case studies for the hypothetical mission …

Synthesis, Isolation And Structural Elucidation Of Cage-Shaped Aluminum And Gallium Phosphorous Aryloxide Complexes As Highly Reactive Lewis Acids And Carboxyboranes As Carbon Monoxide Releasing Molecules (Corms), Hussam Wannas Shinawa Alhamza

Theses and Dissertations

Group 13 Lewis acids have gained a lot of interest in over the years due to their reactivity, potency, and applications in the field of catalysis. Generally, there is a direct relationship between the catalytic activity of the organometallic Lewis acid and its acidity. However, this gives rise to a bigger challenge which is related to the stability of the catalyst. Our preliminary results from working on the catalytic reduction of CO2 have shown catalytic deactivation after one or two cycles. Utilizing bulkier substituents such as monodentate phenolates have shown promising increased stability and reactivity. The structural optimization (i.e., open-shape …

3d Printed Bioglass Incorporated Collagen Matrices For Musculoskeletal Tissue Engineering, Nilabh Sunil Kajave Dec 2021

3d Printed Bioglass Incorporated Collagen Matrices For Musculoskeletal Tissue Engineering, Nilabh Sunil Kajave

Theses and Dissertations

Musculoskeletal injuries are a major cause of disability affecting millions of people around the world and resulting in a significant economic burden of over $14 billion. Surgical intervention using autografts and allografts is the current gold standard used in the clinic for the repair and regeneration of musculoskeletal injuries, but these treatment options are associated with major limitations such as donor-site morbidity, need for multiple surgeries, immune-related complications, and risk for disease transmission. Over the past three decades, the development and application of tissue engineering strategies for restoration and reconstruction of damaged or diseased musculoskeletal tissues have gained considerable momentum …

A Machine Learning-Based Approach To Predict And Optimize The Performance Of Zero Energy Building (Zeb): A Case Study For Florida, Benjamin Kubwimana Dec 2021

A Machine Learning-Based Approach To Predict And Optimize The Performance Of Zero Energy Building (Zeb): A Case Study For Florida, Benjamin Kubwimana

Theses and Dissertations

Machine learning is currently one of the most searched fields aiming to solve real-life problems. Building simulation software tools help engineers estimate building energy behaviors before the actual construction, allowing implementation of more energy efficient choices in building design and construction. Current building energy simulation software tools are mostly physics-based and still lack the benefit obtained with machine learningbased modeling, which offers fast and less computationally expensive techniques to build energy models and efficiently perform design optimization. This thesis presents a machine learning-based approach for building energy modeling and optimizing design parameters to minimize building’s energy consumption. The study is …

Changes In The Abundance And Distribution Of Benthic Mollusks In Polluted Sediments Of A Shallow Subtropical Estuary, Rachael Holtsberg Stark Dec 2021

Changes In The Abundance And Distribution Of Benthic Mollusks In Polluted Sediments Of A Shallow Subtropical Estuary, Rachael Holtsberg Stark

Theses and Dissertations

The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) has been degraded by decades of eutrophication, and has accumulated an abundance of fine-grained, organic-rich sediments (muck). To quantify the impacts of organic sediments and environmental dredging, benthic mollusks were chosen to serve as bioindicators of environmental change, sediment health, and water quality. Data on species richness, biodiversity, and abundances was collected alongside sediment and water quality data before, during and after dredging. Organic sediment content was found to have an inverse logarithmic relationship benthic mollusk biodiversity, species richness, and abundance. Sediments low in percent organic content (0.7% to 6.1%) were located near the adjacent …

Variations In Otolith-Zinc Concentrations Of Brown Surgeonfish (Acanthurus Nigrofuscus) Between Marine Protected Areas And Fished Reefs, Matthew Austin Nichols

Theses and Dissertations

As human populations continue to increase, the growing reliance on exploited fish stocks has furthered patterns of declining body size and biomass worldwide. To mitigate these impacts, fisheries managers have implemented a variety of conservation strategies, including marine protected areas (MPA), as these serve as a refuge for fish, resulting in increases in numerous health metrics (fish density, biomass, body-size, and species diversity). By using fish otolith samples previously concluded to have physiological and morphometric differences between MPA and fished reef (FR) fish, this thesis explores the potential of using microchemical analysis of zinc (Zn) to reveal impacts MPAs might …

Factors That Influence The Extent To Which Cities On Florida’S Atlantic Coast Are Preparing For Climate Change: A Multiple Regression Analysis And Learning Opportunities For Policymakers, Sheila Ann Young Dec 2021

Factors That Influence The Extent To Which Cities On Florida’S Atlantic Coast Are Preparing For Climate Change: A Multiple Regression Analysis And Learning Opportunities For Policymakers, Sheila Ann Young

Theses and Dissertations

This study involved a survey (Appendix A) to leaders of 158 cities inside the counties that border the Atlantic coast of Florida. The impetus behind this study was to identify how policymakers were obtaining, understanding, and sharing information about climate change in order to help inform the policymaking process about adaptation. We cannot only train students at the secondary and university levels about climate change and expect policies to change right away. Those students, for the most part, will not be in policymaking leadership positions for years or decades. What is needed now are strategies to address the climate change …

Evolutionary Algorithms For Function Model Synthesis, Amaninder Singh Gill Dec 2021

Evolutionary Algorithms For Function Model Synthesis, Amaninder Singh Gill

Theses and Dissertations

Function modelling plays an essential role in the systematic design process. Designers are trained in the academia trained on function models, yet the acceptance of function models in the industry remains sparse. A possible reason is that there is a lack of computational support for synthesizing function models. The research presented in this dissertation aims to fill that gap. A conceptual proof of function model synthesis using a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is initially presented. Thereafter a priori rules to evaluate function model have been developed. These rules do not rely on a designer conveying designer intent to the algorithm, which …

A Virtuous Woman, Who Can Find?, Ashley Banker Dec 2021

A Virtuous Woman, Who Can Find?, Ashley Banker

Senior Honors Theses

The contemporary theatre world lacks prominent, virtuous female roles, which are needed to inspire both the actors who play them and the audience members who witness them to emulate their virtuous characteristics. Virtuous characters encourage society to strive for excellence, as well as provide excellent role models for the next generation of young women. From a Christian perspective, a virtuous female role strives to exemplify the traits in Proverbs 31: trustworthy, kind, industrious, selfless, strong, honorable, and God-fearing. The critically-acclaimed plays The Humans and Good People feature prominent female characters who do not exhibit these virtues. Although each play contains …

The Concentration Camp As Site Of Refuge: The Rise Of The Refugee Camp And The Great War In The Middle East, Michelle Tusan

History Faculty Research

The refugee camp today has been naturalized as a product of failed international idealism and political expediency that serves as a timeless reminder of the plight of displaced peoples. This article explores the refugee camp’s origins as a product of a late Victorian imperial and military legacy and the contingencies of World War I. The use of the concentration camp as a tool to provide refuge and control displaced populations began during the war as a humanitarian measure. Part of a larger world of camps that interned civilians, prisoners of war, and refugees during World War I, the refugee camp …

Cervantes Y El Derecho: Préstamos Recíprocos, Susan K. Byrne Dec 2021

Cervantes Y El Derecho: Préstamos Recíprocos, Susan K. Byrne

Department of World Languages Faculty Research

There is a well-recognised close relationship between creative and juridical writings. At times, authors of creative texts adapt juridical elements in the form of minor details, or broad thematic bases, so as to create convincing fictional realities. Alternatively, they use the same aspects to comment on socio-juridical problems in an ambiguous or ironic fashion. This study focuses on the history of these processes and, specifically, on certain key examples in the works of Miguel de Cervantes, seen in relation to multiple legal documents, including a late sixteenth-century manuscript that details punishments for erotic crimes.
