Women are increasingly becoming an integral part of the rural economy. Feminization and empowerment in agriculture is taking place while outmigration of males in the rural Bangladesh is visible due to higher off farm income. The objective of this study is to determine the current state of the ICT-based agricultural knowledge transfer of female farmers in Bangladesh involved in agricultural operations. Data were collected through survey method using structured questionnaire from 140 female farmers involved in public ICT service centers of Bangladesh. The questionnaire was administrated face-to-face and collected data were analysed with SPSS version 23.0. The result from the …
Diagnosing A Princess: How Portrayals Of Mental Illness In Disney Princesses May Influence Children, Hannah Tanner
Diagnosing A Princess: How Portrayals Of Mental Illness In Disney Princesses May Influence Children, Hannah Tanner
Honors Theses
Disney Princess movies tend to be one of the most popular movie series for children. Not only are they popular movies, but children often believe that the characters are people, and may model their own behaviors after them. Children learn through mimicking or witnessing behaviors of others, and this effect can be greater if the child feels an attachment to that person. Viewing mental illness may lead children to develop mental illness behaviors themselves. This literature analysis aims to identify abnormal behaviors portrayed by Disney Princesses and identify whether or not the behaviors meet criteria for the Princess to be …

A Morphological And Histological Investigation Of Imperfect Lungfish Fin Regeneration, Vivien Bothe, Igor Schneider, Nadia B. Fröbisch
Faculty Publications
Regeneration, the replacement of body parts in a living animal, has excited scientists for centuries and our knowledge of vertebrate appendage regeneration has increased significantly over the past decades. While the ability of amniotes to regenerate body parts is very limited, members of other vertebrate clades have been shown to have rather high regenerative capacities. Among tetrapods (four-limbed vertebrates), only salamanders show unparalleled capacities of epimorphic tissue regeneration including replacement of organ and body parts in an apparently perfect fashion. The closest living relatives of Tetrapoda, the lungfish, show regenerative abilities that are comparable to those of salamanders and recent …
The Significance Of Continuing Education On The Intention Of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses To Report Child Maltreatment, Adaorah N. U. Azotam
The Significance Of Continuing Education On The Intention Of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses To Report Child Maltreatment, Adaorah N. U. Azotam
Dissertations
The Centers for Disease Control have recognized child maltreatment as a national epidemic that calls for healthcare providers to focus on early identification and prevention of violence against children. Even though society has this expectation for healthcare professionals, research has shown that there is still a pervasive phenomenon of underreporting this societal ill. Current nursing research identifies education as a significant factor in determining the decision to report child maltreatment in the mandatory reporter role. Based on this conclusion, the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) served as the research framework to understand the pertinent facilitating components of intended reporting behaviors …

Use Of Attractant And Repellent Semiochemicals To Manage Stable Fly (Stomoxys Calcitrans (L.)) Populations On Pastured Cattle Using A Push–Pull Strategy, Alexander Thomas Lehmann
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Stable flies (Diptera: Muscidae) are major economic pests of pastured cattle. Their feeding activity causes billions of dollars of damage to the cattle industry. This project investigated the management of stable flies on pastured cattle using a novel Push-Pull treatment in field trials. The repellent Push treatment, a hydrogenated coconut oil containing approximately 70% of C8, C10, and C12 fatty acids in a starch-pectin water formulation, was applied to the animals weekly. The Pull component was a stable fly trap augmented with an attractant (m-cresol). Permethrin and untreated controls were used as comparisons. Both permethrin and Push-Pull treatments reduced stable …
Separation Beyond Walls: A Discussion Of The Practical And Theoretical Implications Of Prevention Through Deterrence, Kristina Lynch
Separation Beyond Walls: A Discussion Of The Practical And Theoretical Implications Of Prevention Through Deterrence, Kristina Lynch
Undergraduate Theses
This thesis investigates the alternative policing strategy known as Prevention Through Deterrence affecting undocumented migrants at the United States Southern Border. By forcing migrants into the Sonoran Desert, they are subject to countless dangers along their immigration attempt, and in many cases death, as a means to eliminate these “unwanted figures” from the public eye. The policies that comprise Prevention Through Deterrence have been in effect since the 1990’s, but the prevention of certain people from effectively immigrating to the United States has been occurring for just about the entire history of our country. The fact that it is still …

Semantically Meaningful Sentence Embeddings, Rojina Deuja
Semantically Meaningful Sentence Embeddings, Rojina Deuja
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Text embedding is an approach used in Natural Language Processing (NLP) to represent words, phrases, sentences, and documents. It is the process of obtaining numeric representations of text to feed into machine learning models as vectors (arrays of numbers). One of the biggest challenges in text embedding is representing longer text segments like sentences. These representations should capture the meaning of the segment and the semantic relationship between its constituents. Such representations are known as semantically meaningful embeddings. In this thesis, we seek to improve upon the quality of sentence embeddings that capture semantic information.
The current state-of-the-art models are …
Positive Charter Rights: When Can We Open The “Door?”, Michael Da Silva
Positive Charter Rights: When Can We Open The “Door?”, Michael Da Silva
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Whether the Supreme Court of Canada can and should recognize so-called “positive” rights (viz., rights that require the performance of certain actions, possibly including the provision of goods, by the government) under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms remains contentious. Binding Supreme Court precedent states that there are no positive Charter rights—at least under sections 7, 12, and 15, under which demands for positive action are most controversially raised—but positive aspects of Charter rights could be recognized in the future. Yet the circumstances under which such recognition would be appropriate remain opaque. This work suggests that the law of …

The Evolution Of Blood Flow Restricted Exercise, Eduardo D. S. Freitas, Murat Karabulut, Michael G. Bemben
Health & Human Performance Faculty Publications
The use of blood flow restricted (BFR) exercise has become an accepted alternative approach to improve skeletal muscle mass and function and improve cardiovascular function in individuals that are not able to or do not wish to use traditional exercise protocols that rely on heavy loads and high training volumes. BFR exercise involves the reduction of blood flow to working skeletal muscle by applying a flexible cuff to the most proximal portions of a person's arms or legs that results in decreased arterial flow to the exercising muscle and occluded venous return back to the central circulation. Safety concerns, especially …

Neutron Activation Analysis Of Heavy Elements In The Environment, Le Van La, Vishwas Joshi
Neutron Activation Analysis Of Heavy Elements In The Environment, Le Van La, Vishwas Joshi
Publications and Research
The main focus of the research is: application of neutron activation analysis (NAA) to determine concentration and distribution of heavy metals in environmental samples. Due to human activity and industrialization, heavy metal pollutants have been accumulating in the environment. The heavy metal elements (such as: mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), thallium (Tl), and lead (Pb)) tend to be toxic and their presence in the environment is problematic for plant, animal, and human health. The Neutron activation analysis (NAA) is one of nuclear techniques that has many useful applications such as bio-monitoring, biological analysis, environmental research and materials …
Video Game To Movie Adaptations: The Role Of Narratives, Owen Amaral
Video Game To Movie Adaptations: The Role Of Narratives, Owen Amaral
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
With the increased presence of video games in the cultural zeitgeist, film producers in both Hollywood and the Japanese market are continuing to create adaptations of games into films. Hollywood, however, has struggled to create critically and commercially successful adaptations, while the Japanese market was able to find a formula that works far sooner. By examining the narrative techniques utilized in film adaptations and their respective source materials, a number of important factors come to light in determining the success of an adaptation. Managing scope, evaluating genre, and determining target markets all play a key role in the success of …

Lookism: An Examination Of Inequality In Appearance Within Diversity Practices, Hynndie Ozirus, Alyssa Dana Adomaitis
Publications and Research
During the formation of the United States, much of unification has centered on power and the privileged. This history is often painful to speak on in the communities with people of color. Rhodes (2010) discussed cultural injustices of being unattractive in a society appearance- obsessed with potential for “looks” to influence hiring practices, such as better career options and higher pay. The purpose of this was to investigate the issue of how lookism is defined and studied in the media especially in regards to people of color. The review of literature examines the relationship between income, education, as well as …

Use Of Internet Of Things (Iot) Applications In Modern Library Activities And Services, Jignesh Makwana
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Change is the law of the world and it can take a step towards development, be it in person, institution, or in thing. If the library is known as an institution that serves the community i.e. the university of the people then the library also needs to change over time. The most important inventions of the present time are computers and computer technology, if we talk about this technology in the context of libraries, a new age of computing technology that many people refer to as the Internet of Things (IoT). The present study was conducted with the main objectives …

The 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase-like (OGDHL) protein is a rate-limiting enzyme in the Krebs cycle that plays a pivotal role in mitochondrial metabolism. OGDHL expression is restricted mainly to the brain in humans. Here, we report nine individuals from eight unrelated families carrying bi-allelic variants in OGDHL with a range of neurological and neurodevelopmental phenotypes including epilepsy, hearing loss, visual impairment, gait ataxia, microcephaly, and hypoplastic corpus callosum. The variants include three homozygous missense variants (p.Pro852Ala, p.Arg244Trp, and p.Arg299Gly), three compound heterozygous single-nucleotide variants (p.Arg673Gln/p.Val488Val, p.Phe734Ser/p.Ala327Val, and p.Trp220Cys/p.Asp491Val), one homozygous frameshift variant (p.Cys553Leufs∗16), and one homozygous stop-gain variant (p.Arg440Ter). Fermentation And Cell Wall Degradation In Guineagrass And Italian Ryegrass Silages, Mitsuhiro Niimi, O. Kawamura
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Guineagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) was ensiled at the room temperature and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) was ensiled at the room temperature and at 30 under the laboratory conditions. As a result, the acetic acid silage was made from Guineagrass and the lactic acid silages were made from Italian ryegrass. The loss of cell wall components during ensiling was the most in hemicellulose followed by NDF, but those of cellulose and AD-lignin were slight. In the hemicellulosic monosaccharides, the loss of hexose (galactose and glucose) was relatively high and that of pentose (arabinose and xylose) was relatively low …
