Honors Theses and Capstones

Background: Rapid fluid resuscitation is essential to the management of pediatric shock, but there are many barriers to published guideline adherence. Limited evidence describing emergency department (ED) nurse’s knowledge and attitudes of fluid resuscitation exists. This study described pediatric ED nurse’s knowledge and attitudes of fluid resuscitation.

Methods: This single-site descriptive study used survey methodology. A 23-question survey was distributed to nurses in the ED at Boston Children’s Hospital. The survey measured nurse’s knowledge, attitudes, and perceived barriers to fluid resuscitation.

Results: Findings suggested gaps found between actual and perceived knowledge consistent with prior evidence. There was a 50.9% response …

The Perceptions Of Four Novice Occupational Therapists' Preparedness And Ability To Perform Occupation-Based Practice In Pediatric Practice, Laurie Knis-Matthews, Meagan Koch, Alivia Nufrio, Melissa Neustein Gorman, Feby Zaki, Katheryne H. Wall Jan 2021

The Perceptions Of Four Novice Occupational Therapists' Preparedness And Ability To Perform Occupation-Based Practice In Pediatric Practice, Laurie Knis-Matthews, Meagan Koch, Alivia Nufrio, Melissa Neustein Gorman, Feby Zaki, Katheryne H. Wall

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Although occupation-based practice (OBP) is considered best practice within the occupational therapy profession, practitioners continue to have a difficult time actively implementing OBP into treatment. The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) standards necessitate the implementation of OBP. Within the literature, there are gaps in the research investigating novice therapists’ perceptions of incorporating OBP in practice, especially in the United States. Since children and youth is a rapidly growing area of practice, this study focused on investigating how novice therapists are implementing OBP in pediatric settings. This qualitative study therefore investigated the perceptions of four novice pediatric occupational therapists’ …

Improving Communication Skills With Pediatric Sexual Assault Victims, Alexis Camille Hatfield Jan 2021

Improving Communication Skills With Pediatric Sexual Assault Victims, Alexis Camille Hatfield

Master of Science in Nursing Scholarly Project

Pediatric sexual assault is a widespread problem. The exact prevalence is unknown since pediatric sexual assault is often unreported. Pediatric sexual assault occurs at every ethnic, social, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic level. This population often presents to the emergency department where a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) may not be readily available. It is crucial to have effective communication skills for the trauma-informed care these patients should receive. The patient, intervention, comparison, outcome, and time (PICOT) question for this scholarly project proposal is: For the pediatric emergency department nurses at an urban university pediatric emergency department, who often care for …

Importance: Hospitalized children are at increased risk of influenza-related complications, yet influenza vaccine coverage remains low among this group. Evidence-based strategies about vaccination of vulnerable children during all health care visits are especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective: To design and evaluate a clinical decision support (CDS) strategy to increase the proportion of eligible hospitalized children who receive a seasonal influenza vaccine prior to inpatient discharge.

Design, Setting, and Participants: This quality improvement study was conducted among children eligible for the seasonal influenza vaccine who were hospitalized in a tertiary pediatric health system providing care to more than half …

Reach Out And Read Awareness And Utilization At The Community Health Centers Of Burlington, Catrina Hood, Jacob Shaw M.D.

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

The Reach Out and Read (ROR) program is an evidence-based model of literacy promotion used to deliver anticipatory literacy guidance and books to parents and caregivers of children, ages 6 months through 5 years, at well child visits with Primary Care Providers (PCP's). The objective of this project was to assess provider familiarity with and utilization of ROR at the Community Health Centers of Burlington (CHCB) via anonymous survey.

Pediatric To Adult Health Care Transition: A Quality Improvement Project For Primary Care, Nicole B. Jones

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Background: With advances in pediatric care, the number of patients surviving into adulthood with chronic conditions has drastically increased, intensifying the complexity of the process of transition from pediatric to adult centered health care. Despite expert recommendations, established evidence reveals that overall transition outcomes in patients remain suboptimal.

Purpose: The aim this of this project was to provide pediatric primary care providers (PCPs) with current evidence and professional practice recommendations in regard to systematic approaches for the transition of care to the adult setting.

Methods: This quality improvement (QI) project included the development of a provider toolkit based …

The Effects Of Postpartum Depression On Children's Social Development, Delaney Besse, Margaret Williams, Danielle Spencer, Brooke Walters

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The increased incidence of postpartum depression has had significant effects on children’s social development. The purpose of this systematic review is to bring attention to the growing problem in such a vulnerable population. In addition, it was designed to shed light on the lack of research in this area of healthcare. The methods used to conduct the study include various peer reviewed, scholarly and evidenced based articles from databases such as Academic Search Complete, PsycNet, and Pubmed. Each article has been critically evaluated based on the following guidelines: a population group of children under the age of four, specifically maternal …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Pediatric patients, especially those with rare diseases, represent a population that has a high tendency towards offlabel drug use (OLDU) and needs a more careful practice of pharmacotherapy than in adults. We aimed to investigate biotechnological drug use in children with rare diseases requiring OLDU. Materials and methods: This retrospective study examined all single-diagnosed OLDU applications (n = 5792) for 4992 children (

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Aldosterone is a mineralocorticoid that secreted from adrenal glands and a known factor to increase magnesium excretion by direct and indirect effects on renal tubular cells. Although the frequency of hypomagnesemia was found to be approximately 5% in adult studies, there is no study in the literature investigating the frequency of hypomagnesemia in children by using fludrocortisone, which has a mineralocorticoid activity. Materials and methods: A multi-center retrospective study was conducted, including children who were under fludrocortisone treatment for primary adrenal insufficiency and applied to participant pediatric endocrinology outpatient clinics. Results: Forty-three patients (58.1% male, 41.9% prepubertal) included in …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Pediatric kidney transplantation (PKT) anesthesia brings some different challenges than adult kidney transplantation (KT) anesthesia and there are still no studies analyzing the role of experience on PKT outcomes. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the anesthesia learning curve in pediatric kidney transplants performed in our institution and the effect of increasing experience on renal transplantation-related data. Materials and methods: Patients age ≤ 18 years who underwent KT were included in the study, while patients age >18 years were excluded. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to the date of transplant, as the first 10 patients in …

Implications Of Day-To-Day Oulsatility Index Change And Corticosteroid Use In Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury, Jeremy D. Jordan

All ETDs from UAB

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a disruption of the normal function and structure of the brain after a direct or indirect injury. In children, TBI continues to be a significant cause of mortality resulting in the death of over 20 children per day in the United States (Reuter-Rice et al., 2015). Additionally, children who survive TBI have increased rates developmental delay, physical disabilities, neurologic impairment, and mental health disorders (Barlow et al., 2005). A TBI occurs in two phases. The primary injury is the physical insult to the brain that occurs at the time of the injury. The secondary …
