A Case Study: School Professionals’ Perspectives On Students Exiting Middle School Entering An Achievement High School, Joy Davis Lee Dec 2020

A Case Study: School Professionals’ Perspectives On Students Exiting Middle School Entering An Achievement High School, Joy Davis Lee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Each year approximately 1.3 million students dropout of high school and an estimated 40% of minority students do not graduate on time (Roybal, Thornton, & Usinger, 2014). In high school, 22% of students repeat 9th-grade classes because students fail to make a smooth transition. This gives the 9th-grade the highest enrollment rate and the highest dropout rate (McCallumore & Sparapani, 2010). In an effort to increase high school graduation rates, the Peabody County Public School District created Achievement schools, an initiative to recruit highly effective administrators, teachers and staff members to support students with the highest academic and nonacademic needs. …

Housing Prefabrication And Resource Optimization, Megan Scherpereel Dec 2020

Housing Prefabrication And Resource Optimization, Megan Scherpereel

Honors Theses

Enclosure during construction is often time-consuming, expensive, and at the mercy of the weather. By introducing methods for manufacturing prefabricated enclosure components such as wall panels and roof sections, the impact of the three major variables is reduced. Designs for trusses, roof sections, wall sections, and foundations were developed and selected using civil engineering principles; and manufacturing and logistical processes were optimized using engineering and project management skill sets. These multi-disciplinary efforts were combined to create an accessible and versatile set of designs and instructions that can improve the effectiveness of both a skilled and non-skilled volunteer workforce. By creating …

Primal-Dual 2-Approximation Algorithm For The Monotonic Multiple Depot Heterogeneous Traveling Salesman Problem, S. Rathinam, R. Ravi, J. Bae, K. Sundar Dec 2020

Primal-Dual 2-Approximation Algorithm For The Monotonic Multiple Depot Heterogeneous Traveling Salesman Problem, S. Rathinam, R. Ravi, J. Bae, K. Sundar

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

We study a Multiple Depot Heterogeneous Traveling Salesman Problem (MDHTSP) where the cost of the traveling between any two targets depends on the type of the vehicle. The travel costs are assumed to be symmetric, satisfy the triangle inequality, and are monotonic, i.e., the travel costs between any two targets monotonically increases with the index of the vehicles. Exploiting the monotonic structure of the travel costs, we present a 2-approximation algorithm based on the primal-dual method.

Quantitative Description Of The Pastoral Economy Of Western Tuvan Nomads, Paul L. Hooper Dec 2020

Quantitative Description Of The Pastoral Economy Of Western Tuvan Nomads, Paul L. Hooper

ESI Publications

Nomadic pastoralism persists at a substantial scale in Tuva and neighboring regions of Inner Asia. Tuvan pastoral lifeways reflect adaptations to both local environments and current economic realities. Much of our quantitative understanding of the economics of Tuvan nomads is derived from data collected in the first half of the 20th century. Accordingly, this paper provides an updated picture of the inner workings of nomadic households using data collected in Barun-Khemchik and Bai-Taiga provinces in 2013–2015. It analyzes herd composition and size, and compares the frequency of different animals kept today with values recorded in Tuva in 1916 and 1931. …

Clinical Prediction Of Coronavirus Disease-2019: How Accurate Can One Be?, Gabriel Aisenberg, Kevin O Hwang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background Some models based on clinical information have been reported to predict which patients have Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia but have failed so far to yield reliable results. We aimed to determine if physicians were able to accurately predict which patients, as described in clinical vignettes, had, or did not have this infection using their clinical acumen and epidemiological data. Methods Of 1177 patients under investigation for COVID-19 admitted, we selected 20 and presented them in a vignette form. We surveyed physicians from different levels of training (

Dysphoria Ballet: A Morning Routine, Andrew Sonntag Dec 2020

Dysphoria Ballet: A Morning Routine, Andrew Sonntag

Theses

Dysphoria Ballet is a short, stop-motion film that portrays the internal morning routine of a particular trans woman. It is based on a series of interviews with a woman early in transition, and is what I consider to be a deconstruction, compression, and expressionist interpretation of these interviews. It was made with her enthusiastic support and approval. In this way, it might be considered a kind of animated documentary, but it is deconstructed to the point of ultimately being shown as a kind of “experimental-narrative” dance film. It is motivated by an exploration and validation of using performative expression as …

Estimation Of Mean Velocity In Mountainous Streams And The Effect Of Slope And Froude Number., M. Attia Dec 2020

Estimation Of Mean Velocity In Mountainous Streams And The Effect Of Slope And Froude Number., M. Attia

Mansoura Engineering Journal

It is necessary to estimate the mean velocity and thus the corresponding discharge in the ungauged mountainous streams, but the flow resistance equations available for this purpose require further testing and development for mountainous streams. Such streams are characterized by coarse bed materials, steep slopes and small water depths. For these conditions, boulders, cobbles and gravels protrude well into or completely through the flow, and the bed roughness is very large. In the present attempt, equations of Darcy - Weisbach friction factor were developed already to address this problem from which the mean velocity can be predicted. Data of different …

Mixed Messages: Reading Contemporary U.S. Literature Of Biracial Girlhood, Candice Nicole Hale Dec 2020

Mixed Messages: Reading Contemporary U.S. Literature Of Biracial Girlhood, Candice Nicole Hale

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The tragic mulatta character is no longer an accurate representation of biracial female characters in literature. This dissertation considers the vast history of the tragic mulatto genre and its tragic and mired representations of biracial women and how they are often portrayed in literature. Within a historical, legal, and political analysis, I highlight the ways perceptions, attitudes, and representations about biracial individuals have changed, so those same shifts should change in the literature. Because of the bourgeoning field of Critical Mixed Race Studies (CMRS), both scholars and authors are recasting and rewriting the narratives and discourses of mixed-race in the …

Theoretical Study For One Row Of Piles Used As A Breakwater., E. Heikal, T. Salem, A. Koraim

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The performance of the pile breakwater consisted of one row of vertical circular or square piles was investigated theoretically using the Eigenfunction expansion method. The transmission and the reflection coefficients were calculated for different wave and structure parameters. The validity of the theoretical model was examined by comparing the results with the theoretical and the experimental results from different studies. It was concluded that; the proposed theoretical model could be used efficiently to predict the performance of the pile breakwaters consisting of one row.

Routing Protocol For Ad Hoc Wireless Networks Based On Cdma., Fayez Zaki, Nagy Hassan Dec 2020

Routing Protocol For Ad Hoc Wireless Networks Based On Cdma., Fayez Zaki, Nagy Hassan

Mansoura Engineering Journal

A Mobile ad hoc network is a collection of wireless nodes, all of which may be mobile, laptop, personal digital assistants that dynamically create a network without using any infrastructure. Each host participating in the network acts both as a host and as a router. As mobile hosts are no longer just end systems; cach nodes must be able to function as a router is wcl) as to rclay packets generated by other nodes. As the nodes move in and out with respect to each other, the resulting changing topology must somehow be able to communicate to all other nodes …

Freshly Compressed Fiber Reinforced Concrete., A. Al-Tuhami, M. Seleem Dec 2020

Freshly Compressed Fiber Reinforced Concrete., A. Al-Tuhami, M. Seleem

Mansoura Engineering Journal

One of the most famous problems in concrete Technology is reducing the water cement ratio (w/c) to obtain high strength concrete. An innovative method 10 do so is to compress the freshly caste concrete under pressure using special Trains. The method remarkably reduces the water-cement ratio through expelling the excess water from the mix. In addition, compressing the freshly cast concrete resulting in packing the concrete particles together which reduces the voids and increase the interlocking between aggregates. Consequently, the resulting concrete from this process has higher compressive strength, lower water-cement ratio. In addition, the uses of natural fiber add …

Total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) using a mixture of propofol and remifentanil in the same syringe has become an accepted technique in Pediatric Anesthesia. A survey by a group of respected UK anesthetists demonstrated a low incidence of serious complications, related to the pharmacology and dose of the drugs. However, a current guideline for the safe use of TIVA recommends against this practice. Pharmaceutical concerns include the physical stability of the emulsion when remifentanil is mixed with propofol; changes in drug concentration over time; nonuniform mixing of propofol and remifentanil; the risk of bacterial contamination; and the potential for drug administration …

Tolkien And The Age Of Forgery: Improving Antiquarian Practices In Arda, Will Sherwood Dec 2020

Tolkien And The Age Of Forgery: Improving Antiquarian Practices In Arda, Will Sherwood

Journal of Tolkien Research

This article situates J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium as a literary descendent of the antiquarian projects from the 'Age of Forgery' in the 1760s. It argues that Tolkien's motivation to create a national mythology echoed those of James Macpherson and Thomas Chatterton. Drawing on previously unpublished folios from Tolkien's undergraduate notebooks, it showcases his familiarity with the two forgers, their feigned literary heritages, and British antiquarian practices in the eighteenth century. It further argues that Tolkien improved on Macpherson's and Chatterton's antiquarian methodologies by marrying the oral tradition with the written word in The Book of Lost Tales, The Hobbit, and The …

New Research On A Case Of Linear Discontinuous Ground Deformation (Ldgd), Andrzej Kowalski, Bartosz Apanowicz, Piotr Polanin

Journal of Sustainable Mining

LSDS is defined as surface fissures, steps as well as structures formed by them in the form of stairs (several steps), thresholds, ditches, and flexure. The paper presents a case study of formed LSDS – the origin, and possible methods to assess its occurrence on the basis of the research carried out in the Central Mining Institute. The authors showed that the presence of LSDS leads not only to the horizontal deformation but also contributes to the formation of vertical curvatures of terrain that cause fissures in the near-surface layer of the rock mass in the areas with a thick …

Experiential learning is one way of creating deep understanding of subject matter, as well as developing a passion for the field. I have been engaged in leading extended field experiences with students for almost 20 years to ‘immerse’ students in the natural world. In March 2020, Dr. Krumins and I led a group of graduate and undergraduate students to Ecuador to explore and learn about the incredible wildlife and the enduring legacy of revolutionary ideas that this region has generated. Our time in the Galapagos, while short, spanned centuries of scientific thought and millions of years of geologic history. The …

Fault Diagnosability Of Regular Graphs, Mei-Mei Gu, Rong-Xia Hao, Eddie Cheng Dec 2020

Fault Diagnosability Of Regular Graphs, Mei-Mei Gu, Rong-Xia Hao, Eddie Cheng

Theory & Applications of Graphs

An interconnection network's diagnosability is an important measure of its self-diagnostic capability. In 2012, Peng et al. proposed a measure for fault diagnosis of the network, namely, the h-good-neighbor conditional diagnosability, which requires that every fault-free node has at least h fault-free neighbors. There are two well-known diagnostic models, PMC model and MM* model. The h-good-neighbor diagnosability under the PMC (resp. MM*) model of a graph G, denoted by thPMC(G) (resp. thMM*(G)), is the maximum value of t such that G is h-good-neighbor t-diagnosable under the PMC (resp. MM*) …
