Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects
This portfolio demonstrates exploration of technical communication through the research lenses of the automotive industry and the beauty industry, as well as through direct experience with both technical editing and technical writing. It exemplifies how technical communication contributes to the everyday lives of people worldwide, and how it can constantly be improved moving forward in everyday situations. With two research essays and two practical projects, this portfolio demonstrates the current climate of technical communication: a balance between academics and practitioners. In a time when technical communication is still new, there is much exploration to be done, and this collection of …

The worldwide energy crisis and environmental deterioration are probably humanity’s greatest challenges. Thermoelectricity, which allows for the mutual conversion between thermal and electrical energy, has become a promising technology to alleviate this challenge. Increasingly more research focuses on how to fabricate and apply thermoelectric materials for harvesting energy and regulating the indoor thermal environment. However, only a few studies have focused on cementitious materials with thermoelectric potential. Thermoelectric cement is a composite material in which particular additives can enhance the thermoelectric performance of ordinary cement. By potentially replacing traditional construction materials with thermoelectric cement in building applications, electricity could be …

To get accurate information returned from location-based services (e.g., LBS info on nearby restaurants, retail outlets, points-of-interest, etc.), the underlying map (spatial data) must be up-to-date. However, the built environment (e.g., roads, buildings, bike paths, etc.) can change quickly over time, either through planned developments or as the result of natural/manmade disasters. The problem is that keeping online crowdsourced maps like Open Street Map (OSM) updated is still very much a manual process. As such, it can take considerable time to sync the online maps used by LBS with up-to-date spatial data in "real-time".

Background and objectives Sitagliptin, a dipeptidylpeptidase-4 inhibitor, is commonlyprescribed to patientswith type 2 diabetes. As this drug is primarily eliminated by the kidney, a reduced dose is recommended for patients with CKD. Some evidence suggests that sitagliptin is associated with a higher risk of congestive heart failure, particularly at higher doses.Wecompare the 1-year risk of death or hospitalizationwith congestive heart failure in patients with CKD newly prescribed sitagliptin at <50 versus ≤50 mg/d. Design, setting, participants, & measurements This population-based cohort study included older adults (>66 years) with type 2 diabetes and an eGFR<45 ml/min per 1.73 m2 (but not receiving dialysis) who were newly prescribed sitagliptin between 2010 and 2017 in Ontario, Canada. We used inverse probability of treatment weighting on the basis of propensity scores to balance baseline characteristics. The primary composite outcome was death or hospitalization with congestive heart failure. Secondary outcomes included hospitalization with pancreatitis or hypoglycemia, all-cause hospitalization, and glycemic control. Weighted hazard ratios were obtained using Cox proportional hazards regression, and 95%confidence intervalswere obtained using bootstrap variance estimators. Results Of 9215 patients, 6518 started sitagliptin at >50 mg/d, and 2697 started sitagliptin at ≤50 mg/d. The 1-year risk of death or hospitalization with congestive heart failure did not …45>50>

Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support Attendance Interventions For Schools, Bailey Biggerstaff
Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support Attendance Interventions For Schools, Bailey Biggerstaff
Counselor Education Capstones
School attendance is a serious problem all schools face. Students who miss even just a few days of school each month are less likely to read proficiently, fail classes, or drop out of high school (Attendance Works, 2018b). Luckily, educators and other educational stakeholders can help to reduce the rates of absenteeism. It is essential to first identify the source of the problem, or why a child is missing school. Stakeholders should then implement interventions for absenteeism using a multi-tier system of support (MTSS). This literature review defines truancy and chronic absenteeism, identifies barriers which cause students to miss school, …

Optimization Of Electron Beam-Deposited Silver Nanoparticles On Zinc Oxide For Maximally Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Andrew L. Cook, Christopher P. Haycook, Andrea K. Locke, Richard R. Mu, Todd D. Giorgio
TIGER Institute Faculty Research
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy enables robust, rapid analysis on highly dilute samples. To be useful, the technique needs sensing substrates that will enhance intrinsically weak Raman signals of trace analytes. In particular, three-dimensional substrates such as zinc oxide nanowires decorated with electron-beam deposited silver nanoparticles are easily fabricated and serve the dual need of structural stability and detection sensitivity. However, little has been done to optimize electron beam-deposited silver nanoparticles for maximal surface enhancement in the unique dielectric environment of the zinc oxide substrate. Herein, fabrication and anneal parameters of electron beam-deposited silver nanoparticles were examined for the purpose of …
