Carbon Fixation Trends In Eleven Of The World’S Largest Lakes: 2003–2018, Michael Sayers, Karl Bosse, Gary L. Fahnenstiel, Robert Shuchman

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Large freshwater lakes provide immense value to the surrounding populations, yet there is limited understanding of how these lakes will respond to climate change and other factors. This study uses satellite remote sensing to estimate annual, lake-wide primary production in 11 of the world’s largest lakes from 2003–2018. These lakes include the five Laurentian Great Lakes, the three African Great Lakes, Lake Baikal, and Great Bear and Great Slave Lakes. Mean annual production in these lakes ranged from under 200 mgC/m2/day to over 1100 mgC/m2/day, and the lakes were placed into one of three distinct groups …

Assessing Perceptions Of Group Work Using Team-Based Learning, Lauren Ferry, Phillip J. Wong, Kathryn Hogan Dec 2020

Assessing Perceptions Of Group Work Using Team-Based Learning, Lauren Ferry, Phillip J. Wong, Kathryn Hogan

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

Group work is frequently incorporated into courses; however, student perceptions of their experiences and the benefits of group work might differ based on the structure of course. In this study, we examined student perceptions of group work in a team-based learning (TBL) course. Undergraduate students completed pre- and post-surveys on their team work experiences over a semester. Students had lower agreement with the statement “working in groups usually ends up with one person doing all of the work” and higher agreement with “working in a group makes me feel as though I am part of a learning community” at post-test. …

Diamond Line Undergraduate Literary Magazine

In following up the premier issue of The Diamond Line, the fall 2020 editorial staff had big shoes to fill. We took on the challenge of creating something that would uphold the framework of Issue 1 while simultaneously branching out from its margins.

Like the editors before us, we had a vision, but ours took a new form — bright, warm colors. Sunset colors. Moons. Playful lines. Isolation and introspection. A stroll through an art gallery. A coming-of-age story bound between two groovy orange bookends. While Issue 2 does not have an overarching theme, we chose the cover art, “Pandemic …

An Accelerated Peer-To-Peer (P2p) Communication Method Facilitated By Reusing Existing P2p Paths For Low-Power And Lossy Networks, Huimin She, Harbor Dong, Wenjia Wu, Nan Yi

Defensive Publications Series

The Wireless Smart Utility Networks (Wi-SUN) alliance promotes interoperable wireless standards-based solutions for Internet of Things (IoT) deployments, such as distributed automation (DA). For some applications, such as smart utility or smart city applications, it is desirable to provide optimized peer-to-peer (P2P) routing. However, for P2P traffic within a Destination Oriented Directed Acyclic Graph (DODAG), packets either have to be routed through a root in a non-storing mode or through a common ancestor in a storing mode. Techniques herein provide for locally reusing and distributing projected directed advertisement object (P-DAO) tracks. For example, when a node receives a P-DAO track …

Better News About Math: A Research Agenda, Jay Barchas-Lichtenstein, John Voiklis, Laura Santhanam, Nsikan Akpan, Shivani Ishwar, Bennett Attaway, Patti Parson, John Fraser

Numeracy

Numeracy is not a luxury: numbers constantly factor into our daily lives. Yet adults in the United States have lower numeracy than adults in most other developed nations. While formal statistical training is effective, few adults receive it – and schools are a major contributor to the inequity we see among U.S. adults. That leaves news well-poised as a source of informal learning, given that news is a domain where adults regularly encounter quantitative content. Our transdisciplinary team of journalists and social scientists propose a research agenda for thinking about math and the news. We engage here in a dialogue …

Optimum Location Of Last-Mined Stope With The Influence Of Backfilling, Huawei Xu, Derek B. Apel Dec 2020

Optimum Location Of Last-Mined Stope With The Influence Of Backfilling, Huawei Xu, Derek B. Apel

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Many mines in Canada have adopted sublevel stoping method or one of its variations, such as blasthole stoping (BHS) and sublevel longhole retreat (SLR), for the extraction of steeply dipping orebodies. Stope, as the basic excavated element, plays a significant role in the whole process of mining activity. In the mining method of BHS, crossing cuts are excavated at tops and bottoms in each stope for drilling blast holes and transportation of mined out orebodies. Crossing cuts failure may result in prolonged production interruption, fatality, and equipment loss. After the completion of orebodies excavation from the sublevel open stope, the …

The Effect Of Organizational Climate On Faculty Burnout At State And Private Universities: A Comparative Analysis, Sait Revda Dinibutun, Cemil Kuzey, Muhammet Sait Dinc Dec 2020

The Effect Of Organizational Climate On Faculty Burnout At State And Private Universities: A Comparative Analysis, Sait Revda Dinibutun, Cemil Kuzey, Muhammet Sait Dinc

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Organizational climate, that is, the atmosphere surrounding an organization, unites features with individual, organizational, and environmental characteristics that affect the behaviors of individuals within the organization. Burnout is accepted as a syndrome that often occurs in people who work together with others. Faculty members in universities are potential burnout candidates due to their relationships with many students, employees, and administrators. To reduce burnout of the faculty members, it is crucial to maintain a healthy organizational climate. It is also projected that discrepancies in organizational climate can manifest differently between public and private universities. So, the purpose of this study is …

Exploring Relationships Between Arts Administrators In Appalachian Kentucky And Tennessee And Their State Arts Agencies: A Qualitative Narrative Inquiry, Elise L. Kieffer Phd

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

This dissertation explores the relationship of arts administrators in isolated Appalachian communities in Kentucky and Tennessee with their respective representative state arts agencies. Using the narrative inquiry methodology, I participated in interviews with both groups of arts administrators and interpreted those findings through a conceptual framework from the field of healthcare (Feldman-Stewart & Brundage, 2008). This framework recognizes the breakdown of communication that sometimes occurs when one party (the doctor, or in this case, the state arts agency) holds the expertise and position of power, and the other party (the patient, or in my case, the small arts organization) lacks …

Faculty Research 2020

Histopathological images are a rich but incompletely explored data type for studying cancer. Manual inspection is time consuming, making it challenging to use for image data mining. Here we show that convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can be systematically applied across cancer types, enabling comparisons to reveal shared spatial behaviors. We develop CNN architectures to analyze 27,815 hematoxylin and eosin scanned images from The Cancer Genome Atlas for tumor/normal, cancer subtype, and mutation classification. Our CNNs are able to classify TCGA pathologist-annotated tumor/normal status of whole slide images (WSIs) in 19 cancer types with consistently high AUCs (0.995 ± 0.008), as …

Effect Of Flour Type On Sourdough Starters, Irene (Sooah) Park, Kenith Taukolo '23

Methods in Scientific Inquiry

After deciding on world hunger as our topic for our Methods in Scientific Inquiry (MSI) project, we decided to conduct an experiment about sourdough starters. In particular, we were asking how the type of flour (ie, whole wheat and all-purpose) may affect the rise of sourdough starters. The differences in height in the different types of sourdough starters using whole wheat and all-purpose flour were identified. We used paired t-tests for deciding if the heights of the starters grew overtime and a two-sample t-test to find if the mean change in height was statistically significant between the different types of …

Unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) offer innovative capabilities for providing new perspectives on the atmosphere, and therefore atmospheric scientists are rapidly expanding their use, particularly for studying the planetary boundary layer. In support of this expansion, from 14 to 20 July 2018 the International Society for Atmospheric Research using Remotely piloted Aircraft (ISARRA) hosted a community flight week, dubbed the Lower Atmospheric Profiling Studies at Elevation – a Remotely-piloted Aircraft Team Experiment (LAPSE-RATE; de Boer et al., 2020a). This field campaign spanned a 1-week deployment to Colorado's San Luis Valley, involving over 100 students, scientists, engineers, pilots, and outreach coordinators. These …

An Online Resource To Promote Well-Being Among College Students With Social Anxiety Disorder, Valerie Maxine Sanderson, Steven M. Gerardi, Jerilyn Callen

Fall 2020 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Transitioning from high school to college can be a challenge for many students, especially those with social anxiety disorder (SAD). SAD can negatively impact a student’s ability to effectively participate in school. Occupational therapy intervention could be useful to students with SAD but many do not seek out treatment due to fear of stigmatization or discrimination. Not seeking services may place students with SAD at risk of developing unhealthy coping strategies (e.g., avoidant behaviors, alcohol use). The availability of an online resource to support participation in school, without the need to disclose their condition, could be helpful to students with …

Reducing Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries Through Measure-Vention, Rachel Wyatt

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts

The Braden scale may be outdated in the critical care setting to prevent hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs). Applying evidence from the literature on Braden subscales and using “Measure-vention” for quality improvement, a quality improvement project using Braden subscales implemented in a 30-bed ICU reduced HAPIs by 63.5 percent.
