Marine Science

Hydrogen chloride (HCl) is the most abundant (more than 95 %) among inorganic chlorine compounds Cly in the upper stratosphere. The HCl molecule is observed to obtain long-term quantitative estimations of the total budget of the stratospheric chlorine compounds. In this study, we provided HCl vertical profiles at altitudes of 16 100 km using the Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb-Emission Sounder (SMILES) from space. The HCl vertical profile from the upper troposphere to the lower thermosphere is reported for the first time from SMILES observations; the data quality is quantified by comparison with other measurements and via theoretical error analysis. We used …

Effect Of Bed Roughness On Hydraulic Jump Characteristics., M. Attia Dec 2020

Effect Of Bed Roughness On Hydraulic Jump Characteristics., M. Attia

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Hydraulic jump characteristics were measured over various types of artificially roughened test beds in a horizontal flume 5 cm bed width and smooth vertical side walls. Roughness was created using 8.7 mm high cylindrical pins of 6 mm diameter. The patterns of roughness were staggered or parallel and also using strip and spotted roughness test bed, which provided the range of bed friction from 0.042 to 0.16 5. It was observed that the bed roughness reduces the sequent depth and length of hydraulic jump; the observed reductions were related to the Froude number and the bed roughness.

Hiv/Aids Training: A Study Of Stigma Reduction, Elisabeth A. Owen

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Disease (AIDS) are complex chronic conditions requiring an equally complex approach to successful treatment. HIV/AIDS affects diagnosed individuals in multiple areas of life, as such, a biopsychosocial approach to treatment is important. Multidisciplinary teams engaging medical, psychology, and social works professionals provide effective support for patients to participate in their care. The intricacy of the disease process in concert with the complexity of treatment require both patients and treatment providers to be fully engaged in care. The patient-provider relationship is of paramount importance to successful outcomes. There are many barriers to successful treatment, …

Publications and Research

Many studies examine the correlation between the use of resources such as water, energy and land, and the production of food. These nexus studies focus predominantly on large scale systems, often considering the social dimensions only in terms of access to resources and participation in the decision- making process, rather than individual attitudes and behaviours with respect to resource use. Such a concept of the nexus is relevant to urban agriculture (UA), but it requires customisation to the particular characteristics of growing food in cities, which is practiced mainly at a small scale and produces not only food but also …

From Community Policing To Political Police In Nicaragua, Lucia Dammert, Mary Fran T. Malone Dec 2020

From Community Policing To Political Police In Nicaragua, Lucia Dammert, Mary Fran T. Malone

Faculty Publications

In a region plagued by high rates of violent crime and repressive policing practices, Nicaragua has earned a reputation as exceptional. Despite poverty, inequality, and a historical legacy of political violence and repression, Nicaragua has defied regional trends. It has registered low rates of violent crime while deploying policing practices that emphasized prevention over repression. April 2018 marked an end to this exceptionalism. Police attacked anti-government protestors, and launched a sustained campaign against dissidents that continues to the present day. While the Nicaraguan police had long cultivated a reputation as community-oriented and non-repressive, they appeared to quickly change into a …

Industry 4.0 In The Retail Sector: Sustainability Of Food Retail With A Focus On Food Insecurity In Dayton, Oh, Katrina Alexis Coleman

Honors Theses

In recent years, large scale agricultural and food processing industries have experienced a great worldwide digital transformation. The advent of Industry 4.0, which has become popular in Europe, has helped many industries optimize their operations. Relatively new is the idea that food processing industries and other stakeholders in the food distribution supply chain cannot only optimize their processes but also, track and provide timely customer service. This has technical and managerial challenges that might limit the potential benefits of industry 4.0 in the efficient distribution of fresh food produce. For example, food retailers have to meet the increasing customer desire …

Designing And Implementing A Peer-To-Peer Led Behavioral And Energy Reduction Program For Low-Income Neighborhoods, Jenn Hoody Dec 2020

Designing And Implementing A Peer-To-Peer Led Behavioral And Energy Reduction Program For Low-Income Neighborhoods, Jenn Hoody

Honors Theses

Reduction in energy consumption from fossil fuels is a necessary step toward combating climate change as more and more studies are revealing the catastrophic outcomes if the current trends do not change. Residential programs generally managed by energy utilities promoting energy cost savings and reduced consumption are being enacted to decrease the greenhouse emissions. However, thus far, little to no measures have been taken to extend the reach of such programs to low-income communities. Reducing household energy consumption would be particularly beneficial for these communities as it would lower utility bills for low-income households who spend a substantially greater portion …

Upper Extremity Motion Assessments In Virtual Reality Environments, Lanna Nicole Klausing Dec 2020

Upper Extremity Motion Assessments In Virtual Reality Environments, Lanna Nicole Klausing

Traditional upper extremity rehabilitation techniques often utilize tedious and repetitive reaching motions. Fully immersive virtual reality (VR), involving a VR headset, is a technology with the potential to have non-gaming uses and applications, specifically as an upper extremity rehabilitation tool. This study was designed with the long-term goal of evaluating immersive VR as an upper extremity rehabilitation tool. The purpose of this research is to quantify different movement deficits that may arise due to MS or Parkinson’s, and to understand how the motions of patients with MS or Parkinson’s may differ from healthy controls. This thesis documents the first step …

Effect Of Airfoil-Preserved Undulations On Wing Performance And Wingtip Vortex, Faith A. Loughnane Dec 2020

Effect Of Airfoil-Preserved Undulations On Wing Performance And Wingtip Vortex, Faith A. Loughnane

Honors Theses

The effect of undulation placement (leading edge, trailing edge, leading and trailing edge) on the wing performance and the wingtip vortex was investigated. Experiments were performed at the University of Dayton Low Speed Wind Tunnel (UD-LSWT) on undulated wings where the NACA 0012 airfoil cross-section is preserved along the wingspan. Sensitivity studies were done on the undulation wavelength along the span (λ/c 0.31, 0.21 and 0.15) and undulation placement (leading edge, trailing edge, and both leading and trailing edge). The leading edge undulations delayed stall until higher angles of attack, however, the maximum aerodynamic efficiency was reduced. The trailing edge …

The Tolerance Of Shewanella Woodyi For Electric Potentials And Heavy Metals As Biofilms, Christopher Thomas Mortensen

Honors Theses

Shewanella woodyi is a bioluminescent marine organism that is known to be metal tolerant and modulate the intensity of its luminescence with electrochemical potential. The viability of S. woodyi as a bioreporter for the toxic heavy metal zinc, copper, and silver was analyzed. Biofilms of S. woodyi was grown on marine broth agar plates and then exposed to various concentrations of each metal ion to evaluate biofilm response to the metal ions that were generated from an operating short circuited electrode containing either Zn, Cu, or Ag metal. The ability of the bacteria to tolerate the heavy metals and continue …

Multi-Modal Data Analysis And Fusion For Classification In 2d/3d Sensing, Jonathan P. Schierl Dec 2020

Multi-Modal Data Analysis And Fusion For Classification In 2d/3d Sensing, Jonathan P. Schierl

Honors Theses

This research would develop a method of more accurately detecting objects using machine learning. There is plenty of current research and algorithms to tackle this problem. Our approach would use a dataset gathered with 2-Dimensional Infrared Imagery as well as 3-Dimensional LiDAR Data. We would develop a deep learning network with the ability to “learn” using both of these datasets. This proposed fusion network will perform better than either of the individual networks.

Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Custodial Grandparents’ Psychological Distress In Covid-19, Yanfeng Xu Ph.D., Merav Jedwab, Qi Wu, Sue Levkoff, Ling Xu

Faculty and Staff Publications

The fear and anxiety of COVID-19 and its related policy measures have increased individuals’ psychological distress. The objective of this study was to examine relationships between material hardship, parenting stress, social support, and resilience and custodial grandparents’ psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic and further investigate the moderating role of kinship license status. A cross-sectional survey was administered to collect data from custodial grandparents (N = 362) in the United States. T-tests, chi-square tests, and logistic regression models were conducted using STATA 15.0. Results indicated that material hardship (OR = 1.77, p < 0.001) was associated with higher odds of psychological distress, whereas custodial grandparents’ resilience (OR = 0.08, p < 0.001) and social support (OR = 0.39, p < 0.001) were associated with lower odds of experiencing psychological distress. Increased parenting stress in COVID-19 was not significantly associated with psychological distress. Kinship license status moderated the relationships between social support (OR = 0.23, p < 0.05), resilience (OR = 5.06, p < 0.05) and psychological distress. To address custodial grandparents’ psychological distress, more allocated emergency funds and tailored financial services should be provided to meet material needs, and interventions with a focus on resilience and social support are particularly needed. Although licensed custodial grandparents were more likely to experience psychological distress due to their pre-existing vulnerability than unlicensed counterparts, parallel services should be provided to all kinship caregivers.

“Help Is The Sunny Side Of Control”: The Medical Model Of Gambling And Social Context Evidence In Canadian Personal Bankruptcy Law, Anna J. Lund Dec 2020

“Help Is The Sunny Side Of Control”: The Medical Model Of Gambling And Social Context Evidence In Canadian Personal Bankruptcy Law, Anna J. Lund

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

At the start of the twentieth century, people who gambled excessively were viewed as morally deviant. Now, they are viewed as suffering from a medical disorder. Legal actors incorporate this medical approach to gamblers into how they apply the law. This shift from a moral to a medical model reorients actors from punishing gamblers to helping them, and thus can be characterized as a positive, humane development. Yet the medical model has drawbacks too. The medical model can be used to justify paternalistic and potentially harmful interventions in the lives of individuals, and it obscures the social context in which …

Paradises Lost? The Constitutional Politics Of “Indian” Enfranchisement In Canada, 1857–1900, Coel Kirkby Dec 2020

Paradises Lost? The Constitutional Politics Of “Indian” Enfranchisement In Canada, 1857–1900, Coel Kirkby

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Enfranchisement was the legal process for an individual or community to end their legal status as “Indians” under the Indian Act. The Canadian government hoped it would break up bands before assimilating them into settler society. This article aims to excavate the untold story of this attempt to extinguish special “Indian” status in the nineteenth century. It first traces enfranchisement as part of a Victorian discourse of civilization and as a specific Canadian legal process for the assimilation of “Indian” subjects. It then uses new archival sources to tell the untold story of the politics of enfranchisement over the second …

Family Status Discrimination: Caregiving And The Prima Facie Case, Melanie Vipond, Benjamin Oliphant Dec 2020

Family Status Discrimination: Caregiving And The Prima Facie Case, Melanie Vipond, Benjamin Oliphant

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The growing number of dual-income families with young children and ageing parents has led to a corresponding increase in the number of accommodation requests relating to childcare and eldercare. Determining whether an employer’s denial of such a request constitutes prima facie discrimination on the basis of family status has bedeviled adjudicators, resulting in various “tests” being enunciated across Canada. While some scholars and adjudicators have suggested that these “tests” are inconsistent with the test set out by the Supreme Court of Canada in Moore v. British Columbia and place a uniquely high burden on claimants to establish prima facie discrimination, …

Industry Of Anonymity: Inside The Business Of Cybercrime, By Jonathan Lusthaus, Robert Van De Mark

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

In Industry of Anonymity: Inside the Business of Cybercrime, Jonathan Lusthaus attempts to demystify the increasingly sophisticated business of cybercrime and examine how it has matured into a large, profit-driven industry. Through interviews with hundreds of subjects involved in the cybercrime industry in varying capacities, Lusthaus has sought to draw a map that, by showing how seemingly disparate elements in the industry relate to one another, can better explain how the cybercrime industry functions. In particular, Lusthaus strives to produce a better understanding of the people behind cybercrime and the contexts in which they operate. By doing so, the book …

Judicial Influence On The Duty To Consult And Accommodate, Andrew Green Dec 2020

Judicial Influence On The Duty To Consult And Accommodate, Andrew Green

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The duty to consult and accommodate has increasingly become front and centre in a wide range of resource and development projects and the related litigation. The Supreme Court of Canada has stated that it seeks to foster negotiation and limit litigation through its approach to the duty. This article examines, from a theoretical perspective, whether the Court is furthering this objective. It builds on a simple model of How the legislature and courts interact in the administrative law context and discusses how the relationship changes with the addition of Indigenous peoples seeking enforcing the government’s constitutional duty to consult and …

Humans As A Service: The Promise And Perils Of Work In The Gig Economy, By Jeremias Prassl, Ara Dungca Dec 2020

Humans As A Service: The Promise And Perils Of Work In The Gig Economy, By Jeremias Prassl, Ara Dungca

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The gig economy is “the collection of markets that match providers to consumers on a gig basis in support of on-demand commerce.” Some of the most recognizable examples in Canada are Lyft and Uber. In a September 2017 report by the Bank of Montreal on the gig economy, it was estimated that 2.18 million Canadians were categorized as temporary workers, which include people who take on term, contract, or temporary employment, such as freelancers. This report defines a gig as “any job, especially one of short or uncertain duration.” A recent Ontario Court of Appeal Case, Heller v Uber Technologies …

Emotions And Decisions In The Real World: What Can We Learn From Quasi-Field Experiments?, Syon Bhanot, D. Chang, J. L. Cunningham, M. Ranson

Economics Faculty Works

Researchers in the social sciences have increasingly studied how emotions influence decision-making. We argue that research on emotions arising naturally in real-world environments is critical for the generalizability of insights in this domain, and therefore to the development of this field. Given this, we argue for the increased use of the “quasi-field experiment” methodology, in which participants make decisions or complete tasks after as-if-random real-world events determine their emotional state. We begin by providing the first critical review of this emerging literature, which shows that real-world events provide emotional shocks that are at least as strong as what can ethically …
