Firms, Jobs, And Gender Disparities In Top Incomes: Evidence From Brazil, Felipe Benguria
Firms, Jobs, And Gender Disparities In Top Incomes: Evidence From Brazil, Felipe Benguria
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper studies the gender disparities among top incomes in Brazil during the period 1994-2013 using administrative data on the universe of formal-sector job spells and detailed information on educational attainment, employers, and occupations performed. Over these two decades, differences in pay and participation between genders have narrowed, yet the process has been slow and women are still severely underrepresented, especially within the very top percentiles of the earnings distribution. The following findings highlight the role of firms and occupations in explaining these patterns. At the start of the period, women in the top percentile of the distribution owe a …
Mechanisms By Which Mnte-2-Pyp Suppresses Prostate Cancer Cell Growth, Yuxiang Zhu
Mechanisms By Which Mnte-2-Pyp Suppresses Prostate Cancer Cell Growth, Yuxiang Zhu
Theses & Dissertations
Prostate cancer patients are often treated with radiotherapy. MnTE-2-PyP, is a superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimic and a known radioprotector of normal tissues. Our recent work demonstrates that MnTE-2-PyP also inhibits prostate cancer progression with radiotherapy; however, the mechanisms remain unclear. In this thesis, we identified that MnTE-2-PyP-induced intracellular H2O2 levels are critical in inhibiting growth of prostate cancer cells. We found that MnTE-2-PyP induced protein oxidations in PC3 cells and one major group of oxidized protein targets were involved in energy metabolism. The oxidative phosphorylation rates were significantly enhanced in both PC3 and LNCaP cells with MnTE-2-PyP treatment, but mitochondrial …

Comparison Of Cardiac Muscle Between Male And Female Rats With Exercise And Aging: Analyzing Vitals, Gdnf Expression, Ngf Expression, Rna Expression, Sympathetic Innervation, Parasympathetic Innervation, And Sensory Innervation, Katelyn Kurrie
Honors Theses
The direction of my research-based thesis answers the question of how exercise affects the cardiovascular system with aging in male and female rats. My study would highlight the important differences of the cardiovascular system of both sexes which could lead to sex-specific insight on the cardiovascular disease epidemic which prevails as the most common cause of death in the United States. The studies completed will test the hypothesis: neurotrophic factor will be higher in females than males due to the higher presence of estrogen in females. The trophic factor is predicted to increase in both males and females with regular …

School of Biomedical Sciences
Poultry is a major source of protein in sub-Saharan Africa and many other lower-income regions. Newcastle disease virus (NCDV) comprises a significant threat toward poultry production. While NCDV vaccines are routinely used in developed countries, those used in sub-Saharan Africa are mostly imported and are not specific to locally circulating strains. Indeed, the lack of rapid, field-based NCDV detection and the absence of cost-effective production methods for pure, strain-specific vaccines hampers efficient poultry production throughout these regions. This remains a major problem for both subsistence and commercial farming. The aim for this study was firstly, to develop a field-based isothermal PCR …
The Influence Of Weather On The Spatial Behavior Of Visitors Within Utah National Parks, Emily Wilkins, Jordan Smith
The Influence Of Weather On The Spatial Behavior Of Visitors Within Utah National Parks, Emily Wilkins, Jordan Smith
All Current Publications
Social media has been increasingly used to understand visitor use in parks and protected areas (Wilkins, Wood, & Smith, 2020). When people post photos on social media, these photos often contain information on the location, time, and date the photo was taken; all of this information is stored as metadata. Using geotagged images from Flickr, we explored how summer visitors to Utah’s national parks may vary their locations within the park based on the daily weather. We specifically looked at the elevations visitors went to within the parks, as well as their distances from roads, waterbodies, parking areas, and buildings.

Pharmaceutical drugs targeting dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) may increase the risk of fatty liver disease and other metabolic disorders. To identify potential novel CVD drug targets without these adverse effects, we perform genome-wide analyses of participants in the HUNT Study in Norway (n = 69,479) to search for protein-altering variants with beneficial impact on quantitative blood traits related to cardiovascular disease, but without detrimental impact on liver function. We identify 76 (11 previously unreported) presumed causal protein-altering variants associated with one or more CVD- or liver-related blood traits. Nine of the variants are predicted to result in loss-of-function of …

Influence Of Some Climatic Elements On Radon Concentration In Saeva Dupka Cave, Bulgaria, Peter Nojarov, Petar Stefanov, Karel Turek
International Journal of Speleology
This study reveals the influence of some climatic elements on radon concentration in Saeva Dupka Cave, Bulgaria. The research is based mainly on statistical methods. Radon concentration in the cave is determined by two main mechanisms. The first one is through penetration of radon from soil and rocks around the cave (present all year round, but has leading role during the warm half of the year). The second one is through thermodynamic exchange of air between inside of the cave and outside atmosphere (cold half of the year). Climatic factors that affect radon concentration in the cave are temperatures (air, …

Low-power and Lossy Network (LLN) environments may comprise, possibly among other things, different personal area networks (PANs) resulting in, for example, node communication challenges across or between PANs. To address these types of challenges, techniques are presented herein that support a novel secure group management method to self-solve the inter-PAN problem that is both low-cost and customer-friendly. Aspects of the techniques presented herein encompass establishing a secure node-to-node (N2N) communication link between involved inter-PAN nodes, automatically looking for the relay neighbors between different PANs (as the inter-PAN node can help with forwarding the local the Routing Protocol for LLN (RPL) …

Method And System For Facilitating Enhanced Security In Connected Environments For Iot Devices, Harish Murali
Defensive Publications Series
The present disclosure relates to a method and a system for facilitating enhanced security in connected environments for IoT devices. The system comprises a SOAP sender and a SOAP receiver. Here, the SOAP sender and the SOAP receiver utilize truncated TCP packets in corresponding transport layers of IoT protocol stack, instead of using conventional UDP packet and conventional TCP packet. Due to use of modified TCP packet in the transport layer, security is enhanced as compared to use of UDP packet for CoAP implementation at application layer of the IoT protocol stack. Further, due to truncation of the conventional TCP …
