Modeling Residence Time Distribution Of Chromatographic Perfusion Resin For Large Biopharmaceutical Molecules: A Computational Fluid Dynamic Study, Kevin Vehar Dec 2020

Modeling Residence Time Distribution Of Chromatographic Perfusion Resin For Large Biopharmaceutical Molecules: A Computational Fluid Dynamic Study, Kevin Vehar

KGI Theses and Dissertations

The need for production processes of large biotherapeutic particles, such as virus-based particles and extracellular vesicles, has risen due to increased demand in the development of vaccinations, gene therapies, and cancer treatments. Liquid chromatography plays a significant role in the purification process and is routinely used with therapeutic protein production. However, performance with larger macromolecules is often inconsistent, and parameter estimation for process development can be extremely time- and resource-intensive. This thesis aimed to utilize advances in computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling to generate a first-principle model of the chromatographic process while minimizing model parameter estimation's physical resource demand. Specifically, …

Designing And Teaching Adaptive+Active Learning Effectively, Peter Van Leusen, James Cunningham, Dale P. Johnson

Current Issues in Emerging eLearning

To fulfill the promise of providing all learners with access to education, institutions of higher education are exploring personalized learning for individuals with different skills, abilities, and interests. These universities have turned to an instructional model that combines adaptive courseware and learner-centered instruction. This is often referred to as active learning. Despite growth in adaptive courseware and generous support through national organizations, successful implementation of adaptive systems is mixed (SRI Education, 2016). This article highlights the need for a systems approach and illustrates this approach through design and pedagogy decisions that have contributed to the success of adaptive learning at …

We must ensure that trials are scientifically, politically, and socially robust, publicly accountable, and widely transparent.

Gene drive organisms (GDOs), whose genomes have been genetically engineered to spread a desired allele through a population, have the potential to transform the way societies address a wide range of daunting public health and environmental challenges. The development, testing, and release of GDOs, however, are complex and often controversial. A key challenge is to clarify the appropriate roles of developers and others actively engaged in work with GDOs in decision-making processes, and, in particular, how to establish partnerships with relevant authorities and other …

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Second Victim Syndrome (SVS) describes the phenomenon in which a caregiver experiences a traumatic psychological and emotional response to an adverse patient event or medical error. Using quantitative survey analysis, we aim to better understand the personal factors that affect SVS development and recovery.

Methods: Caregivers at a small urban academic medical center who had experienced an adverse patient event in the past six months were invited to take part in this institution-wide, voluntary, quantitative, cross-sectional study. Three surveys were administered; the Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory (HRLSI) was used as a surrogate to measure stressful life events. The …

Reciprocal Empathy: Reversing Antipathy Towards Immigrants In Emotion And Votes, Amanda Gach Dec 2020

Reciprocal Empathy: Reversing Antipathy Towards Immigrants In Emotion And Votes, Amanda Gach

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The topic of immigration politics has gained traction in recent years as surges of immigrants are introduced to new homes—often with a long road of integration into the host country ahead. As a result, debates emerged on how to effectively “humanize” members of these outgroups – which include immigrants and refugees alike—while also being able to forge lasting cooperation between these ethnic groups allowing for peaceful integration. Previous attempts to achieve this goal have used various forms of visual and sensory media to generate empathy towards these outgroup members. These approaches have proven to be ineffective when not met with …

Pharmaceutical drugs targeting dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) may increase the risk of fatty liver disease and other metabolic disorders. To identify potential novel CVD drug targets without these adverse effects, we perform genome-wide analyses of participants in the HUNT Study in Norway (n = 69,479) to search for protein-altering variants with beneficial impact on quantitative blood traits related to cardiovascular disease, but without detrimental impact on liver function. We identify 76 (11 previously unreported) presumed causal protein-altering variants associated with one or more CVD- or liver-related blood traits. Nine of the variants are predicted to result in loss-of-function of …

The Application Of Bromelain Enzyme On Pig Skin To Be Used As Surgery Training Model, Theddeus O.H Prasetyono, Christopher R. Andrian, Elisabet L.A Kinanthi, Siti R.K Putri

The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery

Introduction. Postmortem changes in pigskin made it difficult to be manipulated as a model for advanced technique in surgery training. The use of bromelain enzyme on these pigskins could be an alternative way to obtain the ideal surgery training model.

Method. Thirty-five pigskin-blocks (10×15cm) was divided evenly into seven groups consisted of six groups of different bromelain enzyme treatment (4g/20min, 4g/40min, 8g/20min, 8g/40min, 12g/20min, 12g/40min) and one group of control. Then five chief-plastic-surgery-residents blindly assessed and scored each pigskin and compared its likeliness to the back of human skin. The scores were then analyzed with an interrater reliability …

Despite the fact that acute appendicitis is one of the most common surgical emergencies worldwide, delays in establishing a diagnosis still occur. We report a case of acute appendicitis with an atypical presentation based on the patient’s clinical and laboratory findings. A 25-year-old male was brought with pain in his right lower quadrant. Pain migration, fever, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, or dysuria were denied. Laboratory results were within normal limits. USG examination was not able to visualize the appendix. An abdominal CT-Scan showed a sign of acute appendicitis. The patient was planned for appendectomy. It is important to not immediately rule …
