A Conceptual Model Evaluation Framework For Adaptive Governance And Adaptive Management In Large-Scale Restoration Programs, Chadwin Smith
A Conceptual Model Evaluation Framework For Adaptive Governance And Adaptive Management In Large-Scale Restoration Programs, Chadwin Smith
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Adaptive management (AM) has become a kind of plastic phrase applied as a formulaic panacea for most major species recovery and ecosystem restoration efforts now underway across the United States. AM emerged as an application of the scientific method to resource management, closely tying management to science learning through experimental actions. The phrase “learning by doing” best captures the premise behind developing an experimental management approach that could be applied on the larger scale of a river system or ecosystem. In nearly five decades of application, however, examples of successful AM implementation at large scales are few and conflict remains …
Imagining The Internal Reproductive Environment: Function And Evolution Of The Drosophila Melanogaster Female Reproductive Tract, Caitlin Elizabeth Mcdonough-Goldstein
Imagining The Internal Reproductive Environment: Function And Evolution Of The Drosophila Melanogaster Female Reproductive Tract, Caitlin Elizabeth Mcdonough-Goldstein
Dissertations - ALL
Sexual reproduction involves complex coordination, and potentially competition, among the reproductive cells, fluids, and structures of all individuals involved. For internally fertilizing species, these interactions occur within the body of one sex, predominantly the female, or ovary-associated, reproductive tract. Thus, characterizing the dynamics of the female reproductive tract is critical to understanding the interactions that mediate reproductive success. Although there has been increasing movement toward revealing the active role of the female reproductive tract in shaping and influencing reproductive outcomes, our knowledge of this environment remains limited as a result of both historical biases and technical constraints. My dissertation advances …
Florida’S Red Tide: The Hidden Costs Of Land Development In The Everglades, Catherine Joan Outman
Florida’S Red Tide: The Hidden Costs Of Land Development In The Everglades, Catherine Joan Outman
Student Theses 2015-Present
How does human development of land affect the surrounding ecosystems? This paper explores the development of the Everglades throughout the 1900s, which turned much of this wetland into farmland. Rerouting and restructuring of the Everglades’ remaining waterways has caused fertilizer-rich water from the farms to be dumped into the ocean. This fertilizer pollution has caused aggressive outbreaks of red tide, a toxic algal bloom which depletes the ocean’s oxygen and kills aquatic ecosystems, off the coast of Southwest Florida. Chapter one presents quantitative data about land development in the Everglades, focusing mainly on the amount of wetland before the 1900s …

Although acculturative stress (AS) studies have been conducted for five decades, we still know little about it. Moreover, we do not have a specific framework for international student population. The purpose of this paper is to explore how to use theories and research methods in different contexts and develop a framework. We systematically review articles related to this field, particularly 92 studies published until 2020. There are common variables in AS, comprising social, cultural, psychological, communicative, and demographic factors which managers and decision makers should properly understand and administer in organizations. This article also confirms a link between AS and …

Sustainable Energy System: Case Study Of Solar Water Pumps, Vibhu Sharma
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Graduate Student Publications
In rural areas of countries, agricultural lands require reliable and cost-effective water supply systems. This study evaluates the viability of replacing diesel pumps with solar-powered water pumps (PVPs) in rural Ohio, focusing on borehole depths <100m. The analysis shows that PVPs are a cost-effective alternative to diesel pumps, with a discounted payback period of 7 years for 3 HP solar water pumps. Using life cycle costing and financial modeling in Microsoft Excel, the costs and benefits of PVPs and diesel pumps are compared, demonstrating the economic and environmental benefits of solar water pumping systems.

The health and economic impacts of infectious disease pandemics are catastrophic as most recently manifested by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The emerging infections that lead to substantive epidemics or pandemics are typically zoonoses that cross species boundaries at vulnerable points of animal-human interface. The sharing of space between wildlife and humans, and their domesticated animals, has dramatically increased in recent decades and is a key driver of pathogen spillover. Increasing animal-human interface has also occurred in concert with both increasing globalisation and failing health systems, resulting in a trifecta with dire implications for human and animal health. Nevertheless, to date …
Automatic Pain Assessment Through Facial Expressions, Ilham Seladji
Automatic Pain Assessment Through Facial Expressions, Ilham Seladji
Theses
Pain is a strong symptom of diseases. Being an involuntary unpleasant feeling, it can be considered as a reliable indicator of health issues. Pain has always been expressed verbally, but in some cases, traditional patient self-reporting is not efficient. On one side, there are patients who have neurological disorders and cannot express themselves accurately, as well as patients who suddenly lose consciousness due to an abrupt faintness. On another side, medical staff working in crowded hospitals need to focus on emergencies and would opt for the automation of the task of looking after hospitalized patients during their entire stay, in …

In our research we discuss the sustainability and efficiency advantages that come from switching from diesel to electrical trucks and the use of the automated container stacking system in the context of a port operation as an integral part of the economy that contributes to the progress of any city. The main objective is to explore the methods that can be applied to ensure the success of these initiatives, cost barriers, pre-requisites and challenges that go with this decision. In this research our findings demonstrate that switching to electrical trucks instead of diesel significantly reduces the level of emissions, lowers …
Malware Classification With Gaussian Mixture Model-Hidden Markov Models, Jing Zhao
Malware Classification With Gaussian Mixture Model-Hidden Markov Models, Jing Zhao
Master's Projects
Discrete hidden Markov models (HMM) are often applied to the malware detection and classification problems. However, the continuous analog of discrete HMMs, that is, Gaussian mixture model-HMMs (GMM-HMM), are rarely considered in the field of cybersecurity. In this study, we apply GMM-HMMs to the malware classification problem and we compare our results to those obtained using discrete HMMs. As features, we consider opcode sequences and entropy-based sequences. For our opcode features, GMM-HMMs produce results that are comparable to those obtained using discrete HMMs, whereas for our entropy-based features, GMM-HMMs generally improve on the classification results that we can attain with …
Perioperative Advanced Directives, Derek Washer
Perioperative Advanced Directives, Derek Washer
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Technology and surgical techniques continue to improve, resulting in more clients with advanced directives presenting to the operative suite for surgery or procedures requiring anesthesia. Anesthesia providers are in a critical position to discuss with the surgical patient or surrogate any alteration or reconsideration to their advanced directive. Unfortunately, patients and anesthesia provider discussions at a North Texas hospital were limited due to a knowledge deficit, an outdated hospital policy rescinding all directives perioperatively, and an inadequate consenting mechanism. The perioperative advanced directives project involved updating the hospital policy to current national guidelines and developing a “DNR Under Anesthesia” consenting …

Improving The Maximum Power Point Tracking Efficiency Of Photovoltaic Arrays Via Machine Learning And Deep Learning, Sumedha Inamdar
Improving The Maximum Power Point Tracking Efficiency Of Photovoltaic Arrays Via Machine Learning And Deep Learning, Sumedha Inamdar
Master of Science in Computer Science Theses
Under partial shading conditions, photovoltaic (PV) modules in a solar array experience varying irradiance. A Global Maximum (GM) and multiple Local Maximums (LMs) can originate on the Power-Voltage (P-V) curve under nonuniform irradiance conditions. There are many maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms developed to detect the true maximum power point (MPP) of a PV array. However, in the real-world environment, limited samples of power-voltage (P-V) data might be available to quickly and accurately predict the position of the global maximum point. Since the change of environmental conditions are dynamic, limited time is available to locate the global peak. Machine …

The Electronic Properties Of Ni(Pnn) Pincer Complexes Modulate Activity In Catalytic Hydrodehalogenation Reactions, Denan Wang, James R. Gardinier
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Three chloronickel(II) complexes of PNN‐ pincer ligands with pyrazolyl and diphenylphosphino donors appended to different arms of diarylamido anchors were prepared and fully characterized. The three derivatives (1‐OMe, 1‐Me, 1‐CF3) differ only by the identity of the para‐aryl substituent on the pyrazolyl arm with 1‐OMe being 310 mV easier to oxidize than 1‐CF3. All three complexes are competent catalysts for hydrodehalogenation reactions of 1‐bromooctane and a variety of aryl halides in dimethylacetamide using NaBH4 as both base and hydride source. Comparative studies using diverse substrates showed that catalytic activity correlates with electron donor properties; …

Using Drawings In Qualitative Interviews: An Introduction To The Practice, Alexios Brailas
The Qualitative Report
Drawings are employed by qualitative researchers in many creative ways, and in many different contexts, and a variety of different terms are used to describe similar techniques. I present here a concise description of two basic approaches to integrating participants’ produced drawings into verbal qualitative research interviews, along with characteristic cases of empirical research demonstrating how these approaches have been applied. I also provide a list of best practices and I discuss ethical issues. It is common for qualitative researchers to mix techniques in order to creatively address real-world research challenges. The proposed categorization, augmented by the list of best …
Credit Cards, Credit Utilization, And Consumption, Scott Fulford, Scott Schuh
Credit Cards, Credit Utilization, And Consumption, Scott Fulford, Scott Schuh
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Credit bureau data show remarkably stable consumer utilization of unsecured debt over the business cycle, life cycle, and individually quarter-to-quarter, despite massive variation in available credit. To explain these new findings, we propose a life-cycle consumption model with heterogeneous preferences, endogenous payment choice, and the option to revolve debt for consumption smoothing. Using diary data to identify payment use, the estimated model matches consumption and credit use at every frequency and suggests that around half the population has an endogenously high marginal propensity to consume. The results suggest understanding credit availability and heterogeneous use may lead to richer counter-cyclical policies.

Revisiting The History Of The De Doctrina Christiana Authorship Debate And Its Ramifications For Milton Scholarship: A Response To Falcone And Kerr, David V. Urban
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This essay details the history of the De Doctrina Christiana authorship controversy, suggesting that the debate’s conclusion in favor of Miltonic provenance was declared prematurely. It considers Falcone’s and Kerr’s recent essays in light of the larger controversy and proposes that one consequence of the larger debate should be the liberty for scholars to analyze Milton’s theological presentations in his poetry apart from the specter of DDC.

Forfaiting By Waiver As An Alternative To Project Financing For The Realization Of Public-Private Partnership Projects In Poland, Maria Schulders
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
Despite growing social infrastructure investment needs, public-private partnership (hereinafter: PPP) is not developing in accordance to expectations in Poland. Only 25% of initiated proceedings conclude in the realization of a contract – a significantly lower rate as compared to other European nations. While there are many potential explanations for the poor development of PPP in Poland, this article showcases the inefficiencies in the project financing model, as well as analyzes the applicability of forfaiting by waiver for Polish PPP projects. It outlines the necessary conditions as well as potential benefits to PPP development should the forfaiting by waiver model be …
